Video: “Reaganism with … a Jersey edge”
posted at 4:50 pm on April 13, 2010 by Allahpundit
When he and Bob McDonnell knocked The One for a loop last year on election night, I never expected Christie to emerge as the conservative rock star of the two. Not only did McDonnell have the southern cred, but his victory seemed to matter more. Yeah, granted, Christie’s state is more solidly Democratic, but you could chalk up his upset to Corzine simply being a terrible incumbent. McDonnell’s win portended something more significant, namely, returning Virginia to the red column, which in turn portended all sorts of hopeful things for purplish states this November. Fast-forward six months and what’s happened? McDonnell’s needlessly kneecapped himself with a a culture-war bludgeon while Christie’s become the darling of righty bloggers by drawing a Reaganesque line in the sand on spending. How Reaganesque? William McGurn:
What makes the battle interesting is the way Mr. Christie is throwing the old chestnuts back at his critics.
Here are a few examples, culled from his budget address, public meetings and radio appearances:
The children will be the ones to suffer from your education cuts. “The real question is, who’s for the kids, and who’s for their raises? This isn’t about the kids. Let’s dispense with that portion of the argument. Don’t let them tell you that ever again while they are reaching into your pockets.”…
Budget cuts are unfair. “The special interests have already begun to scream their favorite word—which, coincidentally, is my 9-year-old son’s favorite word when we are making him do something he knows is right but does not want to do—’unfair.’ . . . One state retiree, 49 years old, paid, over the course of his entire career, a total of $124,000 towards his retirement pension and health benefits. What will we pay him? $3.3 million in pension payments over his life, and nearly $500,000 for health care benefits—a total of $3.8 million on a $120,000 investment. Is that fair?”…
Isn’t your talk of ‘stopping the tax madness’ just another ‘Read My Lips’ promise? “[Mine is] much better than ‘Read my lips.’ I’m sorry, it’s just much better. Much stronger. . . . It’s gonna be how my governorship will rise or fall. I’m not signing a tax increase.”
If these clips from FNC are any indication, he’s dead serious about that last part. Prepare yourselves for red meat, my friends. Exit question: How long before this guy’s on the national radar screen? He’s the antithesis of a glamour politician and, needless to say, his austerity agenda is kryptonite to the left, so media coverage outside the Fox universe will be sparse.

He’s exactly who every member of the GOP needs to emulate. I think with the rise of the Tea Party movement, there are signs that many Americans are ready to hear the painful truth from our representatives. And some of us are even willing to do our patriotic duty and pay higher taxes. But in return we ask for honesty, transparency, and accountability. 3 things we are definitely NOT getting from the leaders in Washington right now.

He was on Squawk Box this morning (CNBC) and Joe Kernan tried to get him to hint he was interested in running for President, but he would not bite. He’s totally focused on New Jersey right now, as he should be. When 2012 rolls around he’ll either have a wildly enthususiastic home base of voters pushing him forward (because his record is one of delivering on the great promises he’s making), or he won’t have a chance against the Won. As a resident of New Jersey I would dearly love it if he succeeds, because his message is perfect for the country as a whole.

Reaganesque to the nth degree if the teachers strike and lose their jobs.
fourdeucer on April 13, 2010 at 4:58 PM
I’ll respond to Allah, as someone who LIVES in VA: don’t get too swayed by Washington Post op-eds. This isn’t some fatal blow to McDonnell or his political career. The “Confederate History Month” thing was dopey, but the only people outrageously outraged about it are the NoVa liberals who hate the guy anyway.

It’s simply amazing how out of the ashes of the Obama – Dem 2008 victory so many quality conservatives have surfaced. If Christie is able to pull New Jersey out of its welfare mire, he can’t help but be someone to consider for the presidency in 2012.

Keep fighting, Chris.
The teachers will pull out all the stops.
They’ll hold meetings, and have their kids come forward and talk about “not getting into college” without more money and funding from Trenton.
They will trot out falsified sob stories, and do everything they can to destroy any reform. Teachers and their unions, overall, are the rot of America.
Here, we spend TWO THIRDS of our property taxes on education, and we have the second highest rate if my mind suits me.

This is why you need a governor to run for president, they’re managers, not members of the world’s most exclusive club.
And it’s the prosecutor in him making his case.
That’s the (extra large) model that we should be watching in picking the next leader from the right. A staunch, unrelenting fiscal conservative is the prescription that this sick country desperately needs.
ontherocks on April 13, 2010 at 5:36 PM
Governor Christie shows how a work horse is actually far more exciting and thrilling than a show horse. He is a rock star.
As a Virginia resident, I was very bummed to see Gov. McDonnell stumble into the mire, but he still did balance a $4 billion deficit without raising taxes. Not shabby.

This guy isn’t screwing around. He’s putting his reputation as a politician totally on the line. And in the pair of (priceless!) videos, he is making his case with conviction and clarity.
As to any future in the national spotlight, Christie comes across as more like Bobby Jindal than some other governor of our acquaintance, in that he’s not leaving till the job is done.
“At the end of the day,” this is the kind of man who will eventually succeed at the national level.

The NoVa Liberals hammered him over privatizing the ABC stores also. The WaPo just hates on VA Republicans, period. Look what they tried to do to him with the college thesis. It’s just what they do. Like someone said earlier, the NoVa Libs are the only one’s outragously outraged by the Confederate History Month thing. The WaPo is a pretty big microphone for such an insignificant VA population.

Somebody better clue them in, PDQ. As Gov. Christie rightfully points out, those incredibly generous benefits are insanely out of whack with what taxpayers can actually afford. Something’s got to give, and the newer teachers are the ones who’re going to be giving it.

Christie is the closest thing we have to Churchill. The right man for the times.
Paul-Cincy on April 13, 2010 at 5:56 PM
Patriotic duty and pay higher taxes? Joe Biden, is that you?
NO. We are taxed enough, it is spending and waste that is the problem, not the tax rate. If anything we need tax reform where a flat tax is instituted and the corporate tax rate is cut and the Capital Gains is not raised to encourage investment. If this sort of tax reform happens we will see higher tax revenue and greater job creation. How do I know this? Because history proves it to be true.
Daemonocracy on April 13, 2010 at 5:56 PM
What I like about Christie is his willingness to stay firm on his convictions and not get squishy, even in the face of opposition–the kind with pseudo death jokes. Is he a 2012 contender? Let him fix Jersey first. He needs more than 2 years to do that.
conservative pilgrim on April 13, 2010 at 5:57 PM
While it be great to have Christie in the National scene, he is much more needed in New Jersey right now, which indirectly, will help out the rest of the U.S. by being one less state on a taxpayer funded, bailout (or at least in less need of one)
Razgriez on April 13, 2010 at 6:02 PM
When Christie’s finished fixing New Jersey maybe he could come out here to Kalifornia for a term or two.
pugwriter on April 13, 2010 at 6:06 PM
With all the talk of the left’s Cloward-Piven plan to break the system with a flood of entitlements, wouldn’t it be great if Christie could break the NJ education system by turning off the spigot.
Rebuilding that mess would be real progress without the taint of the progressives.

Yeah! Go Christie. Thin may be in, but phat is where it’s at! Like AP said, who knew?
AP’s right on another point too, IMO. Bob McDonnell goofed big time with his Confederate History Month restoration. He should have seen the blowback coming and handled this with ‘nuance’ if at all, and I’m a Southerner and proud to be. Adios Presidential aspirations. Love ya Bob, but we’ve been pariah’s in the eyes of most American’s for…..150 years? Still, Bob showed how to get elected currently by running a Reaganesque campaign thus underscroring the lack of ‘need’ for the McCain Moderate approach.
JimP on April 13, 2010 at 6:24 PM
To borrow a phrase…this is the first time, in my adult life, that I’m proud to say I’m from NJ.
Even though this puts me in bad grace with 75% of my family who are teachers/administrators.
Sorry, but it’s time to share the pain and join the real world. I have many friends back there that are paying $12k-$15k in real estate taxes on an average 3/4 br home. It’s been out of control for too long.
GO CHRIS!!
AZ_Mike on April 13, 2010 at 6:25 PM
That was me. This Confederacy thing isn’t the end of McDonnell, far from it. Isn’t Warner up for re-election in 2014? McDonnell would be a good early choice to take him on.

Christie might want to have a chat with Ahnuld… The teacher’s union here in CA went to war with him when he tried to stop the madness here… A new commercial everday featuring kids who’s future the evil gov was destroying! All his ballot measures went down in flames and shortly thereafter Ahnuld turned Liberal Dem… must have figured if he couldn’t beat them he would join them….CA is about an hour from going bankrupt…
CCRWM on April 13, 2010 at 6:46 PM
The guy is squishy on social issues, though I can’t tell if it’s from a pragmatic, we are NJ after all, or person experience, but if he’s NJ’s version of Rudy Giuliani, I’m all for it. We need someone to really buckle down and make the painful cuts necessary to reduce state spending. I have clients of mine that are currently paying over $20k in property taxes up in Warren, NJ. How many people can realistically afford to pay 25% in federal taxes, 10% in state taxes, 7% in NJ sales taxes, 20k in property taxes and still send their kids to school, run their own businesses, or do anything else other than hightail it out of this state.
I know I’m currently looking to relocate due to the insane cost of living and the liberal indoctrination people my age have. But in the meantime, I’m glad I voted for Christie for governor.

Vyce, I think you could be correct as far as the Senate is concerned but don’t forget that George Allen lost to Webb for a lesser offense and the other leftist enclaves in the state like “The People’s Republic of Charlottesville”.
Jim Webb is living proof that it’s ALL about party ID, not what the pol has said. Webb not only wrote several books in which he gratuitously used the ‘N’ word over and over and over, but he gave a speech in 1990 or 1991 in which he very articulately defended the Confederacy. Yet none of this mattered to the MSM or the left. Webb the VA version of Sen Robert Byrd of WVA: ie- we/Dems don’t really object to the Confederacy, use the ‘N’ word etc. We just use it to bludgeon Republicans/conservatives.
JimP on April 13, 2010 at 7:07 PM
Most of New Jersey is very nice if you stay away from Turnpike, 1/9, etc. I say this as a Texan who lived there on two different occasions and loved it. The only problem with the state is the liberal voters. Have they learned?
chris999 on April 13, 2010 at 7:09 PM
I’ve been hearing some people are concerned that we don’t have anyone to run in 2012 to defeat 0bama. Think of it as a baseball game. We have our starting pitchers and they are out there. Palin, Romney, Huckabee, Paul, etc. But, we do have a deep bullpen. No one knows yet who the coach is going to put in to close the game. We have the closers that can throw 90+ mph fast balls and have control. Guys like Christie, King from Iowa, Herman Cain, Jim Demint, Ryan, etc. When the closers come in, they will be throwing those fast, high inside pitches and will be backing the dems off.
Mirimichi on April 13, 2010 at 7:11 PM

other than going to the tea party rallies on Thursday or patiently explaining to the ill-informed about what a bad financial situation our state is in, there isn’t too much we can do. He’s our state’s leader, so he’s going to have to lead. We just need to make sure that when there are awful lies told about him and the cuts he’s making, any of the state union commercials for example, we tell people why those commercials are false.

My sister is a teacher here in Jersey. She is peed at Christie for some of the stuff he’s doing, but she also agrees (in a whisper) that much of his belt tightening agenda needs to be done.
-
Her main complaint is that many older teachers, her included, and don’t tell her that I called her older… please… were promised things that the state is now looking for ways to renege on. Also, some districts years ago gave up one thing in negotiations in order to gain another. When the cuts come through, some of those districts teachers will be behind the 8 ball because of those choices. Some will lose, and some others will have gained.
-
My sister is an awesome lady and I know that she cares about the kids she teaches. Her classes are special needs kids, mostly behavioral and family dysfunction issues. Her pay check is good, but not excessive from what I know.
-
That all said, there are too many schools with low ratings, and top heavy administrations. I’m also sure that some teachers could do better. She, as a teachers admits that… and has for years told me that too much emphasis is put on building mega-palace like schools. Her and my brother-in-law paid to send their 2 kids to private high schools because the public Taj Mahal that was built in their district had a brewing gang problem, and low achievement standards.
-
Just to be clear, her husband was (until he retired) a very well paid mucky at a national company, so no her teachers salary didn’t afford the private school tuitions.
-
Bottom line is, Christie is doing great things… and even many teachers know it I’m sure (even if only in a whisper).
-
