The obligatory “Scott Brown ‘snubs’ Boston tea party rally” post
posted at 5:42 pm on April 12, 2010 by Allahpundit
Wasn’t the Boston Herald Scotty B’s single biggest media booster during the campaign for Kennedy’s seat? I seem to recall 80-point headlines screaming “HE DID IT!” and “YES HE DID!” The reason I ask is because today’s story about him skipping this week’s tea party rally back home is their second attempt in three weeks to frame him as some sort of colossal disappointment who’s betrayed the people who voted him in. Remember this dopey hit piece right after the O-Care vote quoting one GOP analyst, one tea party member, and a bunch of Democrats demanding to know, “WHERE IS HE NOW?” Pssst, Herald: He was in the Senate, voting no on reconciliation, just like he promised. How is it his fault that the Democrats found a way to nuke the filibuster and essentially nullify his vote?
That was the old scandal. The new scandal: He’ll be in D.C., in the Senate, on Wednesday instead of hugging it out with tea partiers in Boston. How will they cope with this knife in the back?
Tea Party members said they don’t feel slighted.
“It’s not about paying favors back,” said Mark Williams, chairman of the Tea Party Express, which organized the rally and invited Brown.
“I’d happily forgo (having him) if he’s truly doing the job of the people.
“He has half a century of Kennedy damage to compensate for, after all.”
Barbara Klain, head of the Greater Lowell Tea Party, said Brown also turned down an invite to speak at their April 15 rally in downtown Lowell.
“He said he was going to be in Washington,” Klain said. “He needs to be doing his job.”
He’ll be home on Saturday for the GOP state convention, which tea partiers are also attending. The only evidence of “controversy” in the Herald story is Larry Sabato observing that Brown surely could get away from the Senate to go to the rally but doesn’t want to be seen clinking glasses with Sarahcuda in a deep blue state with reelection two years away. Which is certainly true — and which, as Sabato admits, tea partiers are surely aware of. A more fairminded story would have recognized that as the real angle, not the “snub”: When push comes to shove, tea partiers are a lot savvier about electoral realities than the media caricature of them suggests. (See, e.g., Nevada, where tea party leaders put out an ad slamming the self-styled “tea party” candidate in the race to keep conservatives unified behind the Republican nominee.) In fact, for all the heat Brown’s getting — or rather, not getting — for failing to appear with Palin, I hasten to remind you that Rubio hasn’t tripped over himself trying to get her to come his purplish state of Florida. Via the Shark Tank, here’s Sarahcuda addressing him over the weekend and asking if she can help. Given the state of the race at the moment, I’m thinking the answer is no. Exit question for Massachusetts readers: I’m unfamiliar with the newspaper politics up there, so is there some reason the Herald’s now trying to drive a wedge between Brown and voters? Aren’t they a right-leaning paper?

not a bad move, remember this is Mass.
lavell12 on April 12, 2010 at 5:46 PM
Geez, leave the guy alone. Let him do what he’s gotta do to keep his seat. On the other hand, I wouldn’t doubt that there are many tea party supporters in Mass, they just don’t feel it’s safe to say so.
darwin on April 12, 2010 at 5:48 PM
Stirring the pot, even while empty, is still stirring the pot.
The media must be bored. They can’t go after Barry, so they try to gin up this crap between Brown/Teaparty/Palin/Rubio?
Palin isn’t he pope. They don’t need to kiss her ring.
portlandon on April 12, 2010 at 5:49 PM
This is a non story, and I don’t know what’s going on with the Herald. I worry more about the Hotair commenters who seem to be very clueless. Many were slamming him in the Headline thread, and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why.
This guy is a republican with a 60% approval in MA. That is unheard of. If you read what the press here writes about the tea party and how they write about him, you see why he is being very tactful. They are waiting for an opportunity to get him, and if he goes to this event, he is done.
Very wise choice in my opinion.
Chudi on April 12, 2010 at 5:50 PM
This is a non-issue. Scott Brown would get crushed with a ten ton sledge hammer if he tried to clinch a repub nomination in Texas. But Mass? He’s the best we’re gonna get. And anyone who ever thought he was going to be anything other than a McCain/Grahmnesty RINO was fooling themsleves.
Kataklysmic on April 12, 2010 at 5:50 PM
This is a big nothing burger. To keep the seat in Republican hands, Brown can’t embrace the Tea Party. He got the seat because Coakley was a dud. To keep it, he must be seen as a moderate.
NoNails on April 12, 2010 at 5:50 PM
I don’t really see this as a snub. The day Brown publicly smears the Tea Party or at least buys into the media-driven narrative that they’re racist and violent is when he’ll get into trouble. Right now, he remains beloved by the Tea Party and conservatives simply for what he pulled off in January.
As for Rubio, he doesn’t need Palin’s help given the latest poll numbers. I think there’s a mutual respect between the two, but he’s in the same situation as Bob McDonnell was last fall in Virginia. When you’re all but a shoo-in come November, why rock the boat?
Doughboy on April 12, 2010 at 5:51 PM
Rubio has already said he would love to have her endorsement.
Your snark that he doesn’t welcome her support is wrong – - – yet, again.

Boston Herald story is a non-starter, except to the libtards and posters at Huff-n-Puff. (Eww, just writing about them makes me want to take a shower in bleach).
GrannyDee on April 12, 2010 at 6:00 PM
Actually, he said that Rubio isn’t rushing to get Palin down to Florida, and that’s still true.
As to Brown, most people knew what they were getting when they voted for him. That’s why I never minded Mitt’s flip flop, considering where he used to be governor.

“When push comes to shove, tea partiers are a lot savvier about electoral realities than the media caricature of them suggests.”
Which makes them so feared by the media and the Left…

Brown still somewhere between Jim Demint and Lindsey Graham
tmitsss on April 12, 2010 at 6:03 PM
Non-starter. According to Politico (hardly right wing) he was never going to go in the first place.
The Boston Herald’s been wrong before. As I said in the Headlines thread, this article reads more like an opinion piece than a news story.

I agree that it is understandable and predictable. Scott is just being what he is, a northeastern republican. But, it also why a northeastern republican will never become the presidential nominee of the republican party. This is not a knock at Scott. It just is what it is. Though I would really like to see it change.
For Rubio, I bet he and Sarah do get together before the November election, and it will be huge.

Rubio had to back out of our 4/15/10 Rally. No big deal for us, and no hard feelings at all.

Scott Brown can’t be all bad. Just a few minutes ago, he sent me a request to donate $50 to his re-election campaign in exchange for an autographed baseball, $150 for an autographed baseball bat, and $180 for the bat and ball combined.
I like it! I think I want a bat and a ball. (Note, however, that there was no mention of teapots or teacups in this solicitation.)

The Herald is crazy like a fox. The blew the lefty dog whistle and they came howling. They at 682 comments, chock full o’ moonbaty red herrings.
On a more personal note: I know a celebrity.
I met her Saturday while we were out collecting signatures for a Republican candidate (1 of 3) for our district.
fluffy on April 12, 2010 at 6:24 PM
Folks, let’s get him elected for a real six year term before we start lambasting him. This is libtard Massachusetts we are talking about. Unfortunately tea party members in neighboring Taxachusetts haven New Hampshire can’t vote for him. Sarah Palin is not that popular in Massachusetts and it only take a few points to get the vote to swing in Democratic favor there.
Mr. Joe on April 12, 2010 at 6:25 PM
If I’m not mistaken Palin never officially endorsed Brown. I think they’re both being smart and choosing to be Repubs but not close friends.
Deanna on April 12, 2010 at 6:31 PM
Oh, for the love of God…
Scott was just on Howie Carr’s radio show. He just now got back from Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc., hadn’t heard of the Tea Party in Boston until yesterday. He has Senate business to contend with on Wednesday and will be back in town for the weekend.
Leave the guy alone. He’s doing fine.
turfmann on April 12, 2010 at 6:32 PM
To borrow a lefty phrase if the people lead the leaders will follow. Mass Tea Party you need to convince your friends, neighbors, and coworkers that government as you have known it for the past 70+ years IS THE PROBLEM not the solution.
When you do that then the politicians will seek your vote. Until then at best they will give you promises at election time.

Another happy post by Allah – 2 people rejecting Palin. /s
katiejane on April 12, 2010 at 6:39 PM
Yes, I pointed this out the last time Allah was trumpeting the absence of a Rubio-Palin rally as some kind of significant point about Rubio being nervous having her down there. He said it himself.
He isn’t really in need of any help against Crist. He is straight up nuking the guy. Now when the general election comes around, I fully expect to see a massive Rubio event featuring Palin, maybe a string of them.
If Rubio was worried that Palin would mess things up for him in the “purple” state of Florida, why did he go on the record with a Miami lefty newspaper and say that?
Doesn’t make any sense.
Brian1972 on April 12, 2010 at 6:39 PM
The Boston Herald may endorse Republicans, but they never pass up a moment to post negative information about them. The Herald is more centrist/moderate in the vein of John McCain.
SED on April 12, 2010 at 6:40 PM
Anyone who thinks he “let down” the tea partiers, does not understand the Tea Party.
They knew who he was…and they knew who he was replacing even better.
No Tea Partier really ever believed he was a born again conservative.

Nice diss on Palin, Allah. So predictable. I guess you missed it when it was reported that Rubio said he had great respect for Palin and would be very happy to get her support. Now he is distancing himself from her too, I bet???

Brown’s better than McCain, Graham, Snowe, and Collins.
He did show up at CPAC.
And he doesn’t denounce the Tea Party — he’s friendly, but at a distance.
That’s as good as you’re going to get from someone who wants to be re-elected in MA.

Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 7:16 PM
Brown is playing it smart. He doesn’t want some nut bag showing up with a Nazi uniform to the Tea Party and that’s what ends up on the 6 o-clock news.
RadioFreeUSA on April 12, 2010 at 7:21 PM
I was furious with Brown for voting for that “Jobs” Bill and cozying up to Reid in the process, but this is such a non-controversy. The man has a job to do in Washington and as a young Senator replacing a liberal Icon, he needs to be there as much as possible to make his presence felt. Unlike Obama, he knows when the campaign has ended and the job has started.
Daemonocracy on April 12, 2010 at 7:22 PM
I think this is closer to the real explanation, although I wouldn’t call it “smart,” just pu$$y.
He may have believed the Leftists attack smears that “tea baggers” are racist wing nuts and he’s too new and lacking statesman-like confidence to show up at a rally where he’s afraid he might be made to look like a fool or worse.
I think this has very little to do with Sarah Palin.
Jenfidel on April 12, 2010 at 7:31 PM
The Herald is right-leaning and as such, it run by business people who’s first goal is to make money. Politics takes a back seat to economics.
Scott Brown sells papers. The Herald has long known what you know AP, pissing people off by attacking anybody or anything love in the Commonwealth (especially unjustifiably) is even better than praising them for the bottom line.
They do it in spades in their sports section going so far as to publish lies and having to print a front page apology to the Patriots and owner Bob Kraft.

When Sarah wins by a Reagan Landslide I hope she makes Brown pay big for that photo of him and her on stage. that he could have got for free on wed.

Jenfidel on April 12, 2010 at 8:26 PM
Can we stop calling them tea partiers and just call them Republicans? If they really are “savvy” about electoral realities, and willing to accept moderate Republican candidates that disagree with them on many issues just to gain seats and consolidate power, I don’t see how they’re any different. Giving yourselves a new nickname is cool and all, but you’re not fooling anyone. You’re not a “movement”. You’re just a bunch of spineless Republicans, and when you start winning elections again you’ll start compromising on your values again. In fact, you already have.
crr6 on April 12, 2010 at 8:28 PM
No, because they aren’t all Republicans: there are many people at the Tea Parties that are Democrats and Indies.
And there will be more as time goes on.
Flesh out that argument, please.
I am aware of no compromises on values…
Jenfidel on April 12, 2010 at 8:35 PM
No. There aren’t.
No, there won’t be.
You guys largely supported Scott Brown even though he disagrees with you in something like 50-60% of the issues. You’ll support more like him this November if it means picking up some seats. You don’t give a cr*p about values, you want political power back. Which is fine, but just be open about it.

crr6 on April 12, 2010 at 8:39 PM
You, my friend are utterly clueless. Poll after Poll shows the Tea party growing while the dem and GOP parties shrinking. They also show that 4 in 10 of the Tea party is made of dems and/or ind what were known as Reagan democrates in the 80′s.
As far as politcal power back. The first order of business is to defang the government over reach. ATM that means getting enough votes to bring gridlock to DC. After that its about installing the correct congressman/sebnators/president to rollback the government overreach overreach that goes against our values.
it is very hard to promote your vaules without politcal power as the socialist/marxists discovered in the 60′s 70′s and 80′s.
Like you soiclaists we want power to install our vaules not for the power itself. however after seeing how you all use power over the last 14 months it seems clear you all like power for the power itself since you all couldn’t even get a public option in healthcare.
unseen on April 12, 2010 at 8:52 PM
crr6 is either clueless as always or lying again.
Tea Party demographics as reported by the Los Angeles Times, hardly a conservative bastion:”…28% independent, 17% Democrat and only 57% Republican.”
Oh, and here’s the Gallup Poll, also not in the tank for conservatives:
Republican 49%
Independent 43%
Democrat 8%
crr6 loses again.
Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:02 PM
Wow, so 8% Democrats? Incredible.
LOL.
crr6 on April 12, 2010 at 9:05 PM
And “Independent” does not mean “centrist”. I’d be willing to bet a majority or near-majority of HA posters are registered independents, and this is one of the most wingnutty blogs on the net.
crr6 on April 12, 2010 at 9:06 PM
8% according to Gallup, 17% (more than double) at the LA Times. Not zero, which is what you said. That’s because you lie habitually.
I think that number will go up, not down. You disagree. I think I’m right and you’re wrong as usual.
Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:08 PM

massrighty on April 12, 2010 at 9:15 PM
No, there aren’t [you = LIE]
You called Jen a liar — you’re the liar, and I proved it. I don’t see why anyone anywhere should ever take anything you say seriously again.
If you try to weasel out of it by saying you meant “not many”, I’ve got you there, too. A “conservative” figure of 8% Democrats out of (let’s arbitrarily say – and yes, this is a wild guess, I don’t pretend otherwise) 1,000,000 Tea Partiers is 800,000 people — a pretty good-sized city.
Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:20 PM
Dang it! Typo! 8% is 80,000. Don’t bother making fun of it — it was an honest typo.
Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:21 PM
It’s a pretty easy process, really. I take a look at posts by commenters here, then I take a look at empirical reality. Then I measure the gap between the two.

Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:24 PM

As you know, I never said there are zero Democrats at tea party rallies. Your statement is objectively false. You’re a liar.
crr6 on April 12, 2010 at 9:27 PM
That’s why I made the comparison with the population of a state capital, sweetie-pie. So you could get the big picture. Yes, I made a typo. Big deal. You’re still a liar, and that’s the only reason you’re calling me one — it’s called PROJECTION and you lib-liars do that all the time. Doesn’t work on us any more, honeybun.
Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:27 PM
I’m delighted that we have even 8% Democrats on board. And as I said above, that number will grow, not shrink. Face it, honey, your side always lies, and your lies will not carry the day.
Mary in LA on April 12, 2010 at 9:30 PM
By what method of measurement?
You seem to be using the “because I say so” scale, so beloved of weak minded adults and small children.
massrighty on April 12, 2010 at 9:31 PM
Even if I took your bs numbers at face value, you’re assuming that all 8% actually go to tea party rallies. And even if they did, as a percentage of the total, 8% can certainly be characterized as “not many”.
Now, as for your statement, you asserted that I said there are zero Democratic tea partiers. That’s a lie, plain and simple. Objectively false. Are you going to own up and apologize or will you slither away?
crr6 on April 12, 2010 at 9:32 PM
Well, now! It would be my turn to make fun of your typo — except that that’s something that only stupid and immature people would do, so I won’t sink to your level.

You are correct, you did not say there were zero Democrats. I jumped the gun. There, now I have more integrity than you.
