Sigh: Obama bows to Chinese leader

posted at 8:58 pm on April 12, 2010 by Allahpundit

Drudge has it red-fonted, which means it’s officially outrageous outrage time. I don’t know if I’ve gotten used to him doing this or if it’s a small relief to see him not go quite as perpendicular as he did for the Japanese emperor, but my heart-ache isn’t as pronounced as it was in the past. I’m curious, actually: What does one have to do to merit a show of deference from The One? Is it a debt thing? That would certainly explain the bows to China and Japan, but what about the one to the Saudi king? Maybe it’s an age thing, as the Saudi and Japanese rulers are both elderly — but then what about Hu, who’s only 67? Is it more subjective, where sometimes the mood strikes for no rhyme or reason? What’s the policy here, champ?

If you want to work your outrage muscle, I recommend this Foreign Policy piece in lieu of the Hu photo. Quote:

“In connection with the OSCE, the presidents had a very lengthy discussion of issues of democracy and human rights,” NSC senior director Mike McFaul said on a conference call with reporters Sunday. “Both presidents agreed that you don’t ever reach democracy; you always have to work at it. And in particular, President Obama reminded his Kazakh counterpart that we, too, are working to improve our democracy.”

The Wall Street Journal’s Jonathan Weisman asked McFaul to clarify.

“You seemed to be suggesting there was some equivalence between their issues of democracy and the United States’ issues, when you said that President Obama assured him that we, too, are working on our democracy,” Weisman said. “Is there equivalence between the problems that President Nazarbayev is confronting and the state of democracy in the United States?”

“Absolutely not … There was no equivalence meant whatsoever,” McFaul said. “[Obama's] taken, I think, rather historic steps to improve our own democracy since coming to office here in the United States.”

Follow the link for details on what “democracy” means in Kazakhstan. Why The One feels compelled to remind foreign leaders of our imperfections, I don’t know; presumably he thinks Nazarbayev will be more receptive to human rights criticism from America if we don’t come off as being high-handed. Or maybe there was something he wanted from Nazarbayev and thought a little humility might help him get it. If so, mission accomplished.

Exit question: What “historic steps” has he taken to improve democracy since he’s been in office?

Update: More dividends from the humble approach: China suddenly sounds open to joining Iran sanctions. Maybe if we can get Obama to bow to Ahmadinejad, they’ll take their reactors offline.

Blowback

He is definitely not one of us.

Our President running around the world bowing to countries everywhere. This is so sickening. The guy is a freaking moron. I never in all my days expected to see something like this. Not even the Clintons bowed to other leaders. Obama is like some kind of spectacle to the world.

Has any other President needed such iconography?

Maybe they were so regular that nobody noticed?

Obama has a logo for everything. As though nothing can stand on it’s own without jazzing it up. Everything is hype. Nothing is real.

It is slight of hand. Look at the pretty artwork, ignore the man trying to sell your future.

It is clear that those jumbo ears that Obama sports are merely decorative.

Couple that with the knowledge that he truly does not care what the opinion of anyone else may be.

It is all about him.

We don’t bow to other leaders, especially the ones who have us financially but the short and curlies. You act “as if.” President Obama is in line with the Post Vietnam Left. We’re not an exceptional country. This line of thinking will be our undoing. We will become a fat version of Belgium. Don’t you see what’s happening? Empires die and ours is in the ER. If you think that’s a good thing than take a p*ss all over meaningful moments like this because it speaks VOLUMES.

We don’t bow to the Chinese.

What a great ad – juxtapose all of the bows to dictators with his obvious hatred for the vast majority of Americans.

Then they need to do an analysis of who Obama doesn’t bow to, what their age is, and if bowing is at all appropriate.

Let’s get this figured out. The pictures are out there.

Only in “American” (sigh)?

In case it never crossed your mind, when one is a HEAD OF STATE it does tend to show weakness because the very act of bowing is a physical display of SUBSERVIENCE.

Therefore, when Zero, acting as the representative of us 300-plus million folks bows (ergo shows subservience) then he is, by his position, showing WE are subservient to Hu (the representative of those BILLION-plus communists).

Now, as we all realize (sadly, I know) that we don’t live on the moon Pandora after the big, mean army men were kicked off by the noble smurf basketball players and and we can’t have a giant love-in with our pony tails and resolve our problems with some sparkling flowers and tree sex then I guess we should maybe…oh I don’t know…NOT show such weakness? You know, since bigger guys tend to pummel littler guys unless they stand up to them. If Zero can’t stand up to Hu LITERALLY, then how the hell would he be able to stand up to him behind the red phone?

And I like steak, too.

blueknight99 on April 12, 2010 at 11:11 PM

I harken back to the day of Ronaldus Magnus’ glorious inauguration. Furiously switching from the US Capitol to a foreign news desk in Germany, the TV networks were simultaneously broadcasting the festivities in DC and the up-to-minute status of the US hostages in Iran…who were being released at that exact time.

Why? Because the Head Dufus in Charge in Iran knew, without a doubt, that if there was a single US hostage in Iran at any point in the Reagon Administration, things would get really uncomfortable in Tehran. “President Reagan…how many bombs do you plan to drop in Iran?” “All of them.”

Its not so much that I’m worried about whats going on here. Its much more fun to think about whats going to happen when Uncle Sam stands back up and wants to know who was kicking him while he was down.

I am not a racist on April 13, 2010 at 12:03 AM

“What does one have to do to merit a show of deference from The One? Is it a debt thing?”

It’s a simple formula. It’s actually the standard internalized Ivy League view, a self conscious and yet secretly condsescending deference to “the other” — it’s why Pakistan is pronounced “Pok-ee-ston” according to the local patois, I imagine, but Obama wouldn’t be caught dead calling Worcester “Wusta”. (Remember in the 80s how Nicaragua was suddenly “Neegharagua” to the bien pensants but Montreal was oddly not Mohnrayall”) Here’s the formula: be 1) Non-western or 2) a “person-of-color” or 3) an indigenous person from a former Western colony or 4) some combination of the preceding and you are worthy of respect.

China? Easy. East. Bow. Saudi Arabia? Middle East. Certainly not Western. Muslim, with whom we want to make peace, and all those petro-dollars. Layup. Bow. Brazil? A little tougher. Well, people of color, creoles, indigenous people formerly oppressed by European colonialists. Socialists with big dreams like “Brasilia” for organizing people. On balance, merits a bow. France? Western. No bow, and blow off the prime minister when he wants to do dinner. England? White and Western. Double-fault. No bow and give crappy gifts and return their iconic statues and other valuables in an agitated fashion like a couple breaking up. Israel? Uhhh. Middle-eastern. Uhh. Kind of dark skinned. Uhh. Oppressed by Europeans. Tough call. Screw it. They’re jooooos and they oppress the browner and more disadvantaged and more third-worldy Palestinians and their religion is responsible for the West in the first place and they are successful beyond their station. No bow. Think of Obama as wearing a bracelet with “WWHZD” embroidered upon it. “WWHZD” standing for “What Would Howard Zinn Do?”, of course. Yes, it is really all that simple.

I went the schools that Obama went to, basically, and they tried to beat this crap into me. It didn’t take, but I learned enough to mimic them Invasion of the Body Snatchers style so that I could answer a hypothetical when-to-bow-and-when-not-to-bow question in my sleep.

Obama considers himself the Jesus who has come to atone for Western colonial sins. No, really, that’s how he sees himself. That’s why he bows. He is apologizing to the downtrodden of the world for the all the oppression that the West has visited upon him. The message is “I am sorry the people I represent have been so repulsive in the past, but I assure I am different and I will demonstrate this by licking your boots.” Bowing is simply the cross he has to bear for all our sakes to atone for how awful we have all been.
