Hmmmm: SEIU chief Andy Stern resigns
posted at 10:25 pm on April 12, 2010 by Allahpundit
Says Patrick Ruffini, “How does the most powerful man in Democratic Washington leave, just like that? Something’s fishy…” Indeed.
The President of an SEIU local based in Seattle, Diane Sosne, broke the news to her staffers at 11:35 this morning, local time.
“Last night I received confirmation that Andy Stern is resigning as President of SEIU. He has not yet made a public announcement; we will share the details as we become aware of them,” Sosne wrote in an email obtained by POLITICO.
Sosne offered no explanation for the move.
Sosne isn’t seen as a Stern loyalist or a central union player, but she’s a respected former nurse who sits on the international’s board as president of SEIU Local 1199NW, which represents nurses. She and her assistant didn’t respond to questions about the email. Stern’s spokeswoman also didn’t immediately respond to a question about the email.
The boss emeritus was kind enough to put a long excerpt from her book’s chapter on Stern online, so read that as background. When Ruffini calls him the most powerful man in Democratic Washington, he’s not kidding: Not only did Stern log more visits to the White House last year than anyone else but, as Ben Smith reminds us, he championed Craig Becker’s NLRB appointment and was himself appointed to Obama’s new deficit commission (which shows you how productive that’ll be in cutting costs). I assume there’s a scandal brewing and that he simply jumped before he was pushed, but I’m trying to talk myself into believing that this has something to do with the Supreme Court vacancy. I know that’s insane — The One, by all accounts, is looking for a nominee who won’t spark partisan outrage and Stern is the antithesis of that — but the prospect of a Borkian confirmation carnival in the Senate is simply too glorious to let go of the thought just yet. Even by the standards of Democratic presidents The One is a union crony par excellence, so maybe he’d give this a moment’s thought. And remember, on the day Stevens resigned, I argued that this might be his last, best chance to put a hard leftist on the Court. So how about it, huh? I want to believe. Except … I don’t. Alas, it’s just too insane. Bummer.
HuffPo has confirmed Politico’s scoop and claims that Stern was “tired of the daily grind,” which, for a guy quitting at the apex of his political power, is about as convincing as the ol’ “I want to spend more time with my family” standby. Exit question: If Stern does get nominated to the Court, can we call this guy to testify?

ACORN his right arm was cut off. It doesn’t appear to be growing back very fast. His debt is also problematic. They increased a lot of debt to install the chicago Regime. Now they have less funding channeled from ACORN and money lent to ACORN will never be repaid.
I suspect the AW pair may have taken him out Hanna and O’Keefe

We really have to start getting some more traction on this administration. They are simply too corrupt for too long for it to go hidden.
I sure hope Breitbart has something up his sleeve. Something coercive, blackmailing and explosive. I’m sure I’ll be disappointed though.

Does he even have a law degree? You’re giving me chest pains for nothing…
John_Locke on April 12, 2010 at 10:36 PM
Beck has been teasing about stuff on Stern, but Stern doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who’d just slink away. However, this quick and somewhat quiet middle-of-the-night escape is similar to both Van Jones and Anita Dunn. So maybe Beck or Breitbart or someone else does in fact have something on him. If he ends up in Podesta’s think tank, we’ll know there’s a controversy brewing. That think tank is kind of like the “base” for radical leftists in our nation’s game of tag.

He doesn’t have to resign … “now” … to be appointed to the SCOTUS. So I don’t think this has anything to do with the SCOTUS.
Stern has had a long agonizing climb to the position of mega-power he now occupies – it’s doubtful that, after all that work – he’d resign this soon after getting into the big chair.
We are seven months from a major election – and I assume SEIU will be playing a big part in that – it’s really hard for me to believe he’s leaving now, when you’d think he’d wait until AFTER the election.
He’s either jumping ship because he thinks a bloodbath is coming in November and he wants to go out on a high note or …
There is some kind of internal strife within SEIU or …
There’s a scandal.
I think there is a scandal.

Stern will head up Obama’s domestic policing force that will be as powerful as the military except they will operate in the borders of the USA.
They will ensure that voter turnout for B. Hussein Ogabe stays at 99% with 99% voting for Ogabe.

Seriously…can you even imagine how much $$ this ba$tard has bilked out of the ‘working man’ that he’s supposed to be representing over the years??? If I dint know any better, I’d almost think that unions exist for the sake of…the unions.
It’s not like you can pin the utter and absolute failure of things like GM, the Postal Service, the Airlines, our educational system, or the Federal Government on unions.
God Bless Legalized Extortion…..

there was some fight between SEIU hospital workers and union thuggeries that came out the other day. I wonder if that’s a symptom of a worsening crisis in utopia.
ted c on April 12, 2010 at 10:48 PM
It’s terrifying that things have been so bad that I totally forgot about that guy. I would love to see him try to argue with Scalia.
John_Locke on April 12, 2010 at 10:49 PM
I just had a second thought about the SCOTUS possibility.
And I’m thinking … “God, please! Oh Please!”
Were Obama to attempt to appoint this man to the supreme court – there would be a bloodletting. Virtually every “Glen Beck / Sean Hannity” type statement would be proven in the eyes of even the most detached independent voter.
The GOP would have a LICENSE to filibuster this guy and the hearings would be brutal on this man – who is not used to the grilling he’d receive there.
Oh please, please, please … let this happen! It might even be better than a scandal – and I’ll tell you, it’s one or the other.

are they runnin’ out of kneecappers down at the union shop and stern knows how to swing the stick jus’ right?
ted c on April 12, 2010 at 10:49 PM
Run this thought through the gray matter:
Solis to SCOTUS, Stern to Labor.
And I agree that this will be “that guys” last chance to push the Court to the left, unless Ginsberg retires. If that happens, my guess is the SCOTUS will be short 1 Justice until after Jan 2013.
I’ve asked this before but have forgotten: Can POTUS make a recess appointment to SCOTUS?

Something “enhelpful” for the SEIU is in the offing and he’s blowin’ the coop before things get too hot. It’s not SCOTUS…….even this habitually bowing, socialist, un-American POTUS isn’t that deranged. Yet. Maybe some semi-obscure gubbermint posting that can be sort of explained away with some time to go before the naming.

If there was any labor union that organized crime would try to infiltrate, it would be SEIU. They go after the money and power. Could the Justice Department be conducting a RICO investigation? If so, I don’t think BHO would dare interfere. He’s already getting a little heat for stopping the Black Panther voter intimidation case.
The Teamsters Union Pension Fund was used to build most of Las Vegas in the 1950s. SEIU takes in a lot of money.
