Bad news for Reid: Tea Party candidate fades in Nevada
posted at 1:36 pm on April 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The entry of Scott Ashjian as the “Tea Party” candidate in Nevada’s Senate race had conservatives worried about a possible split vote and a Harry Reid win in November. Some believe that Reid and his Democratic allies would have helped promote Ashjian, who initially got some support for his stated link to the activists. If Reid hoped to maintain that, though, the latest polling news from the Las Vegas Review-Journal should have him crashing back to Earth:
Sue Lowden has established herself as the far-ahead GOP front-runner in Nevada’s U.S. Senate race and the Republican most likely to beat Sen. Harry Reid, even with a Tea Party candidate on the Nov. 2 general election ballot, according to a new poll commissioned by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Six weeks before early primary voting starts, Lowden’s closest GOP rival, Danny Tarkanian, has failed to catch fire with Republican voters in the past few months, the survey found. Meantime, Sharron Angle lost some conservative support, putting her out of the running along with two other long-shot contenders, investment banker John Chachas and Las Vegas Assemblyman Chad Christensen. …
In a general election matchup with three named candidates — including Scott Ashjian, who has filed under the Tea Party of Nevada banner — the new April poll showed:
■ Lowden would win with 46 percent of the vote compared with 38 percent for Reid, 5 percent for Ashjian and 11 percent undecided.
■ Tarkanian and Reid would end in a dead heat with 39 percent of the vote each, while Ashjian would pick up 11 percent of the vote and with another 11 percent undecided.
So much for the third-party ploy. Ashjian got a lot of bad press over the last couple of weeks after allegations of check-kiting surfaced. The state dropped the charges and vacated an arrest warrant, but only after Ashjian ponied up almost $6,000 in restitution. The Tea Party groups in the state have been especially active in labeling Ashjian’s candidacy yet another fraud, which has raised his visibility but almost eliminated his support.
Reid’s not getting any more popular, either. Despite his rosy prediction that passing ObamaCare would bolster his support in Nevada, he has reached a new low in disapproval at 56%. The only glimmer of hope yet for Reid is that his strongest Republican challenger at this stage in the race, Sue Lowden, can’t get to 50% yet. In order to beat her, though, he’d have to win over all of the undecideds and most of the supporters of Ashjian’s Tea Party coalition, and do it with 56% disapproving of his performance.
Well, that’s not the only glimmer of hope. Reid reportedly has a $25 million war chest for this election, and won’t face any challenge in the primary. He can do a lot of damage with that kind of cash, but what he really needs is to change the opinion of Nevadans about him — and so far, they’re only changing in the wrong direction for his chance to go back for another term. Writing bad paper, whether checks or legislation, is a feature, not a bug, for congress critters.

One would think that check kiting is a euphemism for “government experience”.

I don’t think we have a chance of getting Pelosi out of office but if we can get this tool out of office then that would be pretty epic.

You didn’t see the propaganda reels the Dems made last week of a smiling, laid back, family man, Reid? Personable, accessible, doing things for the little guy the boxer who now fights for you.
They’ll keep it up for the next 6 months and they only need 5% of the votes to get it close enough to a tie and then they’ll recount/recount/recount until they get the vote they want.
Skywise on April 12, 2010 at 1:43 PM
If Arizonans are dumb enough to reelect Reid, as dumb as Minnesotans were to elect Franken, then what can you say?
Looters are taking over the nation and voting for other looters, the remainder of the population is going to have to figure out how to isolate themselves somewhere and ride out the coming storm.
Bishop on April 12, 2010 at 1:47 PM
Let that be a lesson to the Dems and the media(I know, I’m being redundant). They’re desperately trying to push the narrative that the GOP is split, but it ain’t gonna happen. If there’s one thing that can unite conservatives and the Republican establishment, it’s wiping out the Dems this fall.

Well if they can ship enough of the Laughlin casino workers who live in Bullhead City across the river to the polls SEIU may be able to save this thing yet.
thomasaur on April 12, 2010 at 1:58 PM
I have seen Lowden on Greta at least twice. She seems to be pretty quick on her feet, and looks amazing to be a grandmother! The $25 million in the Dingy Harry war chest will be irrelevant IF Lowden can verbally, in a crystal clear fashion, define why the Nevada citizenry MUST NOT send Dingy back to D.C. It is all about communication these days, and not necessarily about the money. Scott Brown spent quite a bit less than Martha.
freeus on April 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Watch for an increase in voter registration in border towns like Laughlin and Wendover. The SEIU may be able to gin up enough new voters from AZ and UT to carry the day.

I still can’t believe these crooks (Reid, Pelosi, and 0bama) don’t have higher disapproval ratings than the polls are showing.
If you aren’t outraged, you must not be paying attention. Too many Americans still aren’t paying attention.

Throw the bum out!
I don’t even think 25 million bucks could win over the people of Nevada. Reid comes across as an ideologue a few bricks short of a load, yet he thinks he knows what is best and to hell with his constituents.

If Harry Reid loses in his reelection bid in Nevada, he has a standing offer from NAMA (National Association of Morticians of America) to be their chairman, as a reward for helping to pass ObamaCare, or so I have been told.

I’m a Nevadan and I have seen no ads so far. Ought to be an interesting few months ahead. It will either be popcorn-worthy or a yawn-fest. It may get to the point where I have to record all the shows I watch just so that I can fast forward through the commercials. On the other hand, maybe the commercials will be better than my shows.

Bishop, not all of us Minnesotans were dumb enough to vote for Franken.
There were 17,000 more votes counted than there were voters.
A great number of conservative voters were extremely disapointed with the R(ino) candidate and didn’t vote for either.
Note to the RNC, running Rino’s didn’t win last time out.
Note to voters beat the Rino’s in the PRIMARY!

There are no conservatives in Nevada. Never! My feelings – as usual – I will slaughter them all. Conservatives are not even within 100 miles of Nevada. They are not in any place. They hold no place in Nevada. This is an illusion they are trying to sell to the others, an illusion. As we speak the conservatives are committing suicide by the hundreds on the border of Nevada. Be assured, my Senate seat in Nevada is safe, protected. By God, I think my winning in anything less than a landslide is rather very unlikely. Talk of me losing my Senate seat is merely a prattle. The fact is that as soon as my few opponents reach the Nevada border, we will besiege them and slaughter them with eggs. Wherever they go they will find themselves encircled by millions of my adoring supporters. Just look carefully, I only want you to look carefully. Do not repeat the lies of liars. Do not become like them. Once again, I blame Ed Morrissey before he ascertains what takes place. Please, make sure of what you say and do not play such a role.

I’m trying to buy stock in a frim making “aircraft style” reclining sleeper chairs for overnight waits in doctor’s offices. The aircraft design element is so as to cram as many warm bodies into the waiting rooms as possible.
The latest I have heard is that the Dems are pinning their hopes on exactly the items Reid is grasping. Big war chest, lots of past gratitude for pork and a love for the free healthcare.
Dang. I was hoping for a panic and a flood of money to the population in cash handouts.
A lib told me that the Dems hate the prospect of inflation at this time since everyone on the right has been buying all the gold and hard assets.

Obama is like a political bug zapper. People are drawn to him and inevitably find the life of their political careers sucked dry. Yet they cannot stop themselves. They just keep being drawn by the cruel light of hopey changey.
MrX on April 12, 2010 at 2:51 PM
There goes your bank shot, Harry.
Kissmygrits on April 12, 2010 at 3:03 PM
That is an old poll.
Latest Rasmussen has these numbers:
Lowden 54 to 39 over Reid
Sharron Angle 51 to 40 over Reid
Danny Tarkanian 49 to 42 over Tarkanian
Most polls heavily weight toward Las Vegas by strict population of 2/3, but which supplies only 52% of the primary votes.
Interesting that among all GOP county straw polls:
Bill Parson – Nye county
Mark Amodei – Carson county (Mark has withdrawn, and Angle came in second, just 2% back)
Sharron Angle – WON ALL THE REST, including Clark county – (Las Vegas)
Neither Lowden nor Tarkanian have won a single GOP county straw poll – the activists who actual, vote in the primary.

Ron Paul is good but misses the point wit “Corporatist”
If I were Reid, I would advocate a payment of about six month’s benefits to all Social Security and similar recipients with another six months coming in October.
Then I would jack the SS and other rates through the roof but allow an offset based on a 100% amortization against salaries paid to new people in new jobs over the next year
or two.
Then just leave the poor American public stuck with a new, 25% or so, tax burden.
Unlike Porkulus, there is not enough gravy for Democrat insiders but you can’t have everything. So ‘corporatist’ is not telling the whole story.

Lowden has to denounce Ashjian as a phony Tea Party candidate, and be willing to speak before the Tea Partiers herself. Once this is done, the Ashjian voters will probably switch to Lowden, and Reid will be toast.
Right now, the Nevada polls are basically “anyone but Reid”, not because of what the Republicans have done, but because what Reid did–force ObamaCare through a reluctant Senate by buying votes in Nebraska, Louisiana, and Connecticut, and oppose the “surge” strategy in Iraq, which proved to be successful.
Lowden’s strategy is simple–show what Reid did, and tell Nevadans what she would do differently. Reid can’t deny his record, which looks really lousy right now!

Thanks for doing my proofreading!! Send the bill to Danny.
Just to recap:
Lowden 54 to 39 over Reid
Sharron Angle 51 to 40 over Reid
Danny Tarkanian 49 to 42 over Reid
I have been Sharron’s volunteer pilot for her campaign – it’s a BIG state!!
Amazing woman!! Only candidate to actually stand up and fight for the constitution – see Angle v. Guinn at SCOTUS, when she stood up against all 3 branches of NV state government who ignored their own state constitution in violation of Article IV, Section 4: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government”, i.e. a constitutionally-limited democracy. Really fascinating case!!
Read the story here (In Defense of the Constitution).

Of course, they have to take the blame for Janet Napolitano, so…
