SRLC: Pence speech
posted at 3:53 pm on April 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
So far today, the SRLC has featured at least two barnburner speeches. Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) delivered one of the most enthusiastically-received speeches today, and our friend The Right Scoop captured it all. Pence sounded a clarion call to fight the radical Democratic agenda and challenged the party not to shrink from the challenge. The mood here at the SLRC is almost entirely focused on 2010, not 2012, which given the analyses of it earlier in the week, is a bit surprising. But Pence does nothing here to harm his chances if he decides to make a run for higher office:
The second barnburner speech was given by Herman Cain, which I hope to have later.

Pence was very inspiring today. Great speech!

Really loved the Pence speech. I read that one reporter called him “a standing O” machine
bestwins on April 10, 2010 at 4:03 PM
That’s the attitude we need to keep til November!!
abobo on April 10, 2010 at 4:03 PM
glad pence decided to stay in the house for now….we need his leadership there!
cmsinaz on April 10, 2010 at 4:03 PM
Woot!
Lemme get my tinfoil hat!
Lehosh on April 10, 2010 at 4:03 PM
I can’t think of anything that Ron Paul could say that would interest me.
Pence, on the other hand, is terrific!
Jenfidel on April 10, 2010 at 4:04 PM
God, I hope he sticks to economic sh!t and lays off the nazi comparisons.
abobo on April 10, 2010 at 4:06 PM
Ron Paul wins.
Spathi on April 10, 2010 at 4:07 PM
Thnx, I was afraid I would miss it, probably.
thomasaur on April 10, 2010 at 4:07 PM
What the?
thomasaur on April 10, 2010 at 4:07 PM
Have they announced that we win the straw poll yet?
The Dean on April 10, 2010 at 4:08 PM
Pence 2012!!!
lavell12 on April 10, 2010 at 4:12 PM
No, but I heard he’s neck and neck with Romney, with both sides trying to buy votes.
BPD on April 10, 2010 at 4:25 PM
Wish I could have gone just to see the Ron Paul speech in person. Lots of great points made there and it’s worth watching for sure.
The Dean on April 10, 2010 at 4:27 PM
Excellent speech…!
… I can see why the MSM will not cover a word.
Seven Percent Solution on April 10, 2010 at 4:27 PM
Paul is never worth watching!
He’s a loon and a crank and has been a crummy Congressman to boot!
Jenfidel on April 10, 2010 at 4:34 PM
Who’s Ron Pwnd?
Lockstein13 on April 10, 2010 at 4:38 PM
Great speech to the base.
Republicans really need to watch the pro-life rhetoric if they want to win in November. It’s their Achilles’ heel.
Jaynie59 on April 10, 2010 at 4:42 PM
Over 80% of the people who actually live in his district disagree. Where do you live, Massachusetts?
The Dean on April 10, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Just curious…
… but which one of you brings the lotion?
Seven Percent Solution on April 10, 2010 at 4:44 PM
TX, but a district with a much saner electorate and Congressman.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate when it comes to falling for a good demagogue like Paul.
Jenfidel on April 10, 2010 at 4:47 PM
I wish I could take credit for this idea, but someone recently said that Ron Paul is so valuable, we ought to seal him in a time capsule and bury him away, in case of future need.
Works for me.
Russ on April 10, 2010 at 4:49 PM
Ron Paul….Ron Paul…Peter Paul’s brother, right? They have something to do with nuts if I remember correctly.
Patrick S on April 10, 2010 at 4:49 PM
Ron Paul bought a block of 800 tickets for his supporters. Mitt did the same. I would imagine that Paul and Mitt will do very well in the straw poll. In fact going into the vote Ron Paul and Mitt are the likely winners. If they get anything but first and second place it will be seen as a big defeat.
this is why Mitt stayed away to not be seen as a likely winner and be embarssed again like in CPAC when he lost.
I would be happy with a Palin third place finish or higher here.
since she did not buy a major block of tiockets are her support will be true grassroots.

Christian, Conservative, Republican, in that order.
Great speech. I couldn’t help but envision Ronald Reagan standing off to the side, smiling and clapping. Gipper inspired. Gipper approved.
Extrafishy on April 10, 2010 at 5:12 PM
Are the palinistas spinning a straw poll defeat?….Didn’t Romney skip this waste of time, how could he compete against Our Lady of the Perpetual Whining?
Falz on April 10, 2010 at 5:21 PM
When the Republicans take over the house, don’t ya think that Pence will be voted in as Speaker rather than Boehner?
texasconserv on April 10, 2010 at 5:24 PM
His org is there giving out his book in exchange for votes.
BPD on April 10, 2010 at 5:24 PM
Romney will do anything to win.
texasconserv on April 10, 2010 at 5:36 PM
Glad they are focusing on 2010 because if we don’t win, and win big – 2012 might be too late to save the country.
As for the straw poll – who the heck cares.
gophergirl on April 10, 2010 at 6:18 PM
No offense to any Ron Paul supporters, but I don’t see him as presidential or electable.
Pence, on the other hand, looks and sounds presidential and is electable. Great speech.
Ricohoc on April 10, 2010 at 6:36 PM
Pence seems bland, and too homsepun, and makes way too many sports references. I turned off the video after 5 or 6 minutes.
On the bright side, his speech patterns reminded me of George W. Bush. He should build on that.
Emperor Norton on April 10, 2010 at 6:44 PM
He is always on something that’s for sure.
William Amos on April 10, 2010 at 6:45 PM
Listening to Pence’s speech it got me thinking about the 2012 election. Obama got elected with the American public largely knowing nothing about him and the media hiding or spinning everything they could for him and the goodwill of the American people excited about electing their first black President. I don’t like those facts but they’re true.
Obama, regardless of the economy, will have record and he will be required to answer and explain past statements to how he ended up governing. Even if he chooses to sidestep answering them, that’s answer to the American public. They will vote on the entirety of his record AND how he portrays it. Arrogance isn’t an admirable quality.
Sultry Beauty on April 10, 2010 at 6:47 PM
Romney defeats Paul by 1 vote.
I’d feel better with the John Birch Society counting the votes! ha
Spathi on April 10, 2010 at 6:52 PM
We most definetly need to win in 2010. Then we can move on to 2012. That was a great speech.

Mirimichi on April 10, 2010 at 7:03 PM
Paul is flat out, straight up TOO OLD. We could not win with Johnny Mac, what makes you think that we would win with someone OLDER? In addition to which he neither looks nor sounds Presidential – his voice has a whiny cadance that is highly aggravating. Make him Secretary of the Treasury, and I would be happy, President of the United States, no thank you. Oh, and I forgot to mention the tin foil hat he keeps within easy reach – so would all the people who worship this man like a god PLEASE find someone electable to support.
Govgirl on April 10, 2010 at 7:08 PM
Hmmm Romney won in the South? I find that really hard to believe. In fact he didn’t even show up! And all the news story headlines… I haven’t read any, say he is dogged by the Mass. healthcare thing.
Romney won in the South? Our South? I mean of America? Did pigs fly today?
petunia on April 10, 2010 at 7:11 PM
Oh, also want to note – the FOCUS needs to be on 2010, not 2012 because we might not make it that far if we do not win big THIS year. I for one amd taking Pence’s call to arms (sneakers, clipboards, and telephones) literally – I have already been helping out a great candidate in VA-02, would love it if some of you would check out his page and see if you can help. I am not sure if I am allowed to post this here, but I will take a chance. Look up Scott Taylor, fomer Navy SEAL at http://www.scotttaylorforcongress.com – he is running to go up against Glenn Nye (D) and it is a pretty crowded primary field with a well financed RINO who donated to Obama in the lead.
Govgirl on April 10, 2010 at 7:15 PM
Well done, Rep. Pence. Keep banging on that drum of fiscal responsibility. Get out in front of the cameras more to explain how every American prospers when our government is limited and our leaders are ethical.
onlineanalyst on April 10, 2010 at 7:15 PM
Pence is right. Win with conservatism. Focus on 2010. Keep our eyes on the prize. We do not want a country where an ObaMao “leadership” values “managing decline.” We believe in the greater promise of liberty and growth, which will allow us all to pursue our happiness. Those ideals of our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution do promote justice for all.

OH, GREAT AND POWERFUL EMPEROR!!! Pray, leave us simple, “homespun” folk to our backward, ignorant ways. We can not bear to stand in your mighty aura of enlightenment and intellect! Free us from your terrible glory and return to your loyal subjects in the Land of the Trolls!! (or Huffington Post….whichever)
blueknight99 on April 10, 2010 at 7:58 PM
Pence is looking awfully Presidential.
There was a comment on his facebook page to this effect…
“Pence makes sense in 2012″
I agree with that sentiment.
knob on April 10, 2010 at 8:50 PM
Do some people actually think Ron Paul could be President? Never, ever going to happen…
D2Boston on April 10, 2010 at 9:00 PM
Not good enough.
What are the Republicans going to do to end the pre-existing conditions nightmare? Like it or not that needs to be addressed.
What are Republicans going to do to ensure that the Goldman Sach’s of the world can no longer rape the middle class?
What will they offer in insuring that the crooks on Wall Street and in Congress end the circle jerk on Capital Hill?
Nothing about the revolving door of lobbyists in Congress; nothing about a plan to take on the environmental groups and their abuse of the court system to tie up our ability to drill, mine and produce clean coal, nukes and natural gas..
There is NO SUBSTANCE in most of the Republican agenda…
rickyricardo on April 10, 2010 at 9:12 PM
…..oh yeah….how bout promising us to take on the public employee unions, teachers unions….ending tax payer funding of ACORN!!!
Where’s the beef Pence?!!
rickyricardo on April 10, 2010 at 9:13 PM
hey Pence!!!
Fannie? Freddie?
rickyricardo on April 10, 2010 at 9:17 PM
Wow. I am impressed by Mr. Mike Pence. America needs to get to know this guy. It sure has been refreshing to hear so many real adult speakers during the SRLC. I’m so weary from the constant childish babble of the Democrats. Thanks for posting all of these great moments.
redwhiteblue on April 10, 2010 at 9:36 PM
Here is Herman Cain’s speech.
If Obama ever debated this guy, he’d wet his pants and run off the stage in tears. :-D
http://is.gd/bnHzJ AWESOME!
SalHansen on April 10, 2010 at 10:10 PM
The Pence speech sounded like a Republican Convention speech to me. I said to my wife….that’s what a President should sound like. He has impressed me right down to the ground. If he runs in 2012, I’m all in….
TheRook on April 11, 2010 at 12:27 AM
x2
I was going to type something similar. This was a test for a presidential run in the future. He was testing the waters and to him I say, “jump in, the water is fine.”
Great speech. The man gets it. I dare say he even read and comprehends the Constitution too. Limited govt, stand up for our friends, stand up against our enemies…. we need more like him.
Yakko77 on April 11, 2010 at 10:40 AM
Run Mike Run, I have been watching him since the Tea Party in DC, his speech there was awesome too. He is a decent, honorable man. I will hit the ground and campaign for him in a heart beat. I agree he gets it.
