Bombshell: It wasn’t a cigarette that that Qatari diplomat was smoking on the plane
posted at 5:45 pm on April 9, 2010 by Allahpundit
An instant classic via Mediaite. Can we now safely conclude that al-Madadi wasn’t aiding and abetting that jailed AQ operative he was traveling to see? That’s not to suggest that drugs and jihad are mutually exclusive, of course; on the contrary, they’re the very lifeblood of the Taliban. But being mistaken for a terrorist after doing a hit of weed in an airplane bathroom? That sounds like a lost scene from “Harold & Kumar,” not “Obsession.”
Exit question: Does Shep really not know what a “one-hitter” is? Let’s poll it!

Blowback

BTW, back in the day, we called that gadget a “sneak-a-toke”.
The actual smoking device in the better ones were painted to look like a filter-tip cigarette.

Well, at least we now know how “Qatari Diplomat” lost all his IQ points….

Okay, what’s a one-hitter?
PattyJ on April 9, 2010 at 8:06 PM
Hmmm…
I didn’t know, but I guessed right and I’m not really “prohibitionist”.
Does that mean I’m only stupid within the confines of the solar system?

Oh wait! He was smoking weed? Then he must be an innocent babe in the woods, right?
Another Libertarian dilemma.

What’s a one-hitter? Well, back home, they called em’ bats; as in a baseball bat. They are about 2″ long. The ones I am somewhat familiar with are brass. They come with a “dug-out”. A dug-out is a wooden box that contains contraband “weed”. You pack the contraband in the barrel of the bat and smoke it like a cig. Then you cough up lung.
That is what probably gave him away.

He’s still a complete d-bag, but this makes me like him just a little bit. Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!
You go, idiotic stoner!

He couldn’t be arrested. “Diplomatic Immunity” but “Persona-non-gratia” gets him thrown out of the country, never to return, just fine.
You hearing me there Hillary and State? Or do we have to get louder?

So, from the standpoint of society, smoking is harmful only if it causes you to do harm to yourself or to others.
For example, if you spend money on smoking which would normally go for almsgiving, you do harm to others. If your behavior is modified by the smoke so that you behave badly to others, you do harm.
There are other verses in the Koran which instruct you not to do harm to yourself, and not to kill yourself. Certainly those come into play as well in making a determination.
All of these verses depend on your own self-examination, or, as us Catholics would put it, an informed conscience. If you believe that what you are doing has ill effects after achieving an informed conscience, God will hold you to account. If you believe that what you are doing has no ill effects after achieving an informed conscience, you will not be held to account for it. In other words, sins, either of commission or of omission, are borne of intent.
Islam has that in common with Christianity and Judaism. Sadly, Islam gives its practitioners an out — at the Pearly Gates, according to at least one hadith, each Muslim will be handed a Christian or a Jew to be thrown into hellfire as a key to their entering heaven, no matter that sins as high as a mountain be upon them. Hence, the bad consequences of sin can be mitigated as long as there are at least as many Christians and Jews as there are Muslims.

Could be a new muslim tactic to make us think they’re harmless on planes so we let our guard down, then one day-the bong turns out to be a bomb.

The Wiki link for the “one-hitter” reminds me of how I used to store my biz cards in a very similar container when I worked for Circuit City.
Sold a computer to a guy and pulled my biz card case out and set it on the register in front of me. He happened to be an off duty cop and reached for his badge and was going to arrest me, thinking I had just made the blunder of blunders.
/cool story bro

So, it took him like 20 minutes to spark up a onie?
I’m suspicious.
notropis on April 10, 2010 at 1:29 AM
….hmmmm. So if you set your underwear on fire on an airliner and smoke is going all over the other passengers…..wait…if you blow yourself up and smoke goes everywhere and there are other people around…..

We called it a one hitter, or a pinch hitter. I was at Wrigley Field back in 89, sitting first row behind the cubs relief bench, with a few friends on a sunny aft. Having about 7 of those big beers in me, i pulled out the bat, fired it up, and my buddy tried tograb it as I lit it. It flew out of my hand/mouth and under the bullpen bench, making a tingy ting ting sound. I tapped then cubs relief pitcher Pat Perry on the back and said hey Pat, could you get that for me. He bends down, picks it up, and says, “hey, is this your brass nail?” and hands it back to me. : ) That was totally awesome. The good ole days.

Whenever I read the phrase “diplomatic immunity,” I am compelled to repeat it to myself in a South African accent a la Lethal Weapon 2. Does that happen to anyone else? Just me?
An Objectivist on April 10, 2010 at 7:47 PM
I’m surprised no mention of this yet: Did anyone check to see if this happened on flight 420?
