Obama to Palin: What do you know about nukes anyway? Update: Video added

posted at 9:19 pm on April 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

Wish I could give you a video clip but ABC’s being stingy until tomorrow. For now, we’ll have to make do with the Reuters transcript of his interview with Stephanopoulos:

Palin, the former vice presidential candidate, has not been shy about criticizing Obama’s policies and this week weighed in on his revamped nuclear strategy, saying it was like a child in a playground who says ‘punch me in the face, I’m not going to retaliate.’

“I really have no response to that. The last I checked, Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on nuclear issues,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News…

“What I would say to [Republican critics] is, is that if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff are comfortable with it, I’m probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin.”

Are they comfortable with it, though? One of the unanswered questions about the new protocol promising no nuclear response (in most cases) to a biological or chemical attack is how much of it reflects — or rather, doesn’t reflect — Gates’s thinking. From a speech Gates delivered on October 30, 2008, just a few days before the election:

There is no way to ignore efforts by rogue states such as North Korea and Iran to develop and deploy nuclear weapons, or Russian or Chinese strategic modernization programs. As long as other states have or seek nuclear weapons – and potentially can threaten us, our allies, and friends – then we must have a deterrent capacity that makes it clear that challenging the United States in the nuclear arena – or with other weapons of mass destruction – could result in an overwhelming, catastrophic response…

Our nuclear arsenal also helps deter enemies from using chemical and biological weapons. In the first Gulf War, we made it very clear that if Saddam used chemical or biological weapons, then the United States would keep all options on the table. We later learned that this veiled threat had the intended deterrent effect as Iraq considered its options.

While some may not see a real nuclear threat to the United States today, we should be mindful that our friends and allies perceive different levels of risk within their respective regions. Here, our arsenal plays an irreplaceable role in reducing proliferation.

Maybe Gates has since changed his mind, but I’m not sure why he would have; the likelier explanation for the shift is that he’s simply going along with the policy of the new commander-in-chief.

Here’s the video of Palin’s comments on Hannity to which The One is reacting. You may remember that this topic also came up at her VP debate with Biden. You’ll find that video here.

Update: Here’s the clip. Skip ahead to 1:30.

Someone needs to read some history.

First of all, wikipedia??? You are aware that that is not a reputable reference? And secondly–did you even bother to read the whole article, or just the first paragraph….

lovingmyUSA on April 9, 2010 at 12:11 PM

She does have a working knowledge of strategic nukes and U.S. defense policy from being governor of AK, which is America’s front line of defense.

Jenfidel on April 9, 2010 at 11:01 AM

Of course she does, dear. And, Governor Deval Patrick has a working knowledge of NORAD tracking capabilities and ICBM delivery platforms by virtue of Cape Cod being the closest American soil to Western Europe.

Alden Pyle on April 9, 2010 at 11:09 AM

Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.

Paln, as governor of Alaska, was briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism.

She was the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counterterrorism plans. Palin was privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country’s defense because of Alska’s proximity to Russia.”

Do the math–Palin 700 days of military intelligence vs Obambi’s 420 (14 X 30) days….

At some point soon, Robert Gates is going to have to resign, facing up to the fact that there is so much he can do to keep a left wing Administration from pursuing naive and dangerous policies.

Phil Byler on April 9, 2010 at 12:35 PM

Bullsh*t.
Neither President Reagan nor Bush 43 would have anything to do with anything like this!

Jenfidel on April 9, 2010 at 9:33 AM

Reagan’s SOS and those in his administration who negotiated START I say otherwise. You’re an idiot.

Is the Pee Wee Herman Defense a derivative of the Peter Pan Policy on National Security?

DIVIDE AND DESTROY…………….NOT HOPE AND CHANGE

THAT is the message of this Administration and the GodBahma in charge of it.

Palin / Beck / the bankers / the automakers / the doctors / the energy industry / Wall Street / Republicans / Hospitals / School choicers

The Demonization continues the faces just change.

DIVIDE AND DESTROY……….once you look at like that everything makes sense with this Administration.

PappyD61 on April 9, 2010 at 12:42 PM

This should be fun. These little snide comments by Obama never work to his advantage.

If he really didn’t think Sarah Palin’s criticism was legitimate why did he respond?

What part of the article do you take issue with? Do you not believe that Reagan started talks with Russia over START? It was a good treaty, you should be proud of what Reagan started. Obama is extending the path and the continuation of START is something that the Gipper would have been proud of as well.

Sarah Palin is light-years ahead of you Mr ‘President’ in terms of knowledge of nuclear weapons.

Mmmmm… Lets see, a Junior Senator vs Governor of Alaska. Which is going to know more about nuclear defense.

What an idiot.

It’s actually Fox News guest host / reality TV show host vs POTUS, but Obama never said or even implied he knew more about nuclear weapons than she did. He implied his advisors (secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff) do. And he’s right, that’s a huge part of their job.

jonknee on April 9, 2010 at 1:39 PM

Well the trian has left the station. there is no one else on the scene. You go to war with the army you got.

Um, no it hasn’t.

Last time I checked, Sarah Palin wasn’t the leader of anything. There are lots of great Republican candidates that have incredible potentinal to drop kick Obama in the next election.

This whole notion that Palin is the savior of Conservatism is utter horse shit.

Judging from this idiotic treaty, his advisors must be the Pepboys, Manny, Moe, and Jack. And that was way classy of a sitting President to offer The Pee Wee Herman Defenseagainst Palin regarding his actions.

What? According to whom?

Does Sarah Palin hold information that the secretary of defence isn’t aware of? This is the same bullshit nonsense that the libtards pulled when Bush was in office.

Is Obama a douchebag of epic poroptions? Yes. Does he make America look weak? Yes. Does Sarah Palin have an abundance of ‘knowledge’ on nuclear weapons and proliferation – more so than WH advisors and defence departments?

Fuck no.

There are sooooooooo many things to hate Obama for. So many. This just isn’t one of them.

You-Eh-Vee on April 9, 2010 at 1:49 PM

Extrafishy on April 9, 2010 at 2:13 PM

If, as you say, nuclear proliferation is the “greatest threat” to US security, then does it make sense to do away with our deterient?

You may think these points are repetitive, but you keep raising questions that require the same response. And most Palin supporters are too naive to understand that the policy has legitimate strategic thinking behind it (other than a plan to help Cuba invade the US). If you wanted to understand why Kissinger, Schultz, or Lugar support the nuke treaty, you could look that information up yourself.

Nuclear proliferation around the globe will eventually enable al Qaeda to steal or buy a weapon from a corrupt military leader or government official. The more countries with weapons, the more difficult it becomes to police this grave threat.

al Qaeda doesn’t care about the US deterrent. It will turn a large American city into ashes as soon as the opportunity arises.

joedoe on April 9, 2010 at 7:28 PM

I love how the left doesn’t even think Palin is qualified to criticize the President. Having been a governor, a vice presidential candidate and now a possible adversary for the one in 2012 does not qualify her from making commentary on his performance, but Keith “Bathtub Boy” Olbermann is complete qualified to comment on anything.

Dan Pet on April 9, 2010 at 8:20 PM

Sarah doesn’t hate him. Though she doesn’t like him one bit and realizes he is trying to make things as they ought to have been back in the schoolyard rather than be any kind of president, Sarah actually loves him. It’s an experience of love he’s never had: she tells him the truth, shows him exactly who he is, and would be the first to give him a big hug and help him if he repented.

Sarah Palin is Barack Obama’s/Barry Sotero’s/Whomever he is today’s salvation (and he probably no longer knows who he is). She’s God’s gift to him and he hates it. Absolutely hates it. He hates it so much it makes him squirm.

Give in, little boy. Just give in. Admit that you’re lost. Stop spending every night in terror that you’ll be found out. She’s already exposed you. And she (or someone else) will keep on doing it as long as necessary.

mooseburger on April 9, 2010 at 9:09 PM

From BBC via Jihad Watch:

Iran’s president has unveiled new “third-generation” centrifuges that its nuclear chief says can enrich uranium much faster than current technology.
The centrifuges would have separation power six times that of the first generation, Ali Akbar Salehi said in a speech marking National Nuclear Day.

Uranium enrichment is the central concern of Western nations negotiating with Iran over its nuclear programme.

The new technology could shorten the time it takes to build a nuclear bomb.

It’s a great time to downscale our arsenal.

We only used the bomb on Japan to end the war and save almost 1 million American soldiers from being killed or wounded during a full scale invasion.

The idea is to change the rules of the game by saying that any ambition to obtain or use a nuclear card is unacceptable and immoral.

We’re already doing this by our NPT and active endorsement of the IAEA.

Jenfidel on April 9, 2010 at 9:52 AM

It needs to added that far fewer Japanese died as a result of the 2 A-bombs dropped including radiation poisoning, than would have been killed by the US led invasion of the Japanese home islands.

With the defense the Japanese had planned, Admiral Bill Halsey’s quote may have been entirely to accurate.

“When this war is over, the Japanese language will be spoken only in hell” — Admiral Bill Halsey

Slowburn on April 9, 2010 at 11:30 PM

Hell, Obama doesn’t even know who his daddy is much less about nukes.

AReadyRepub on April 9, 2010 at 11:34 PM

The issue over who we would use nucs on and who we wouldn’t use nucs on is a red herring. The most dangerous part of this new policy is planned obsolescence of the weapons, which will lead us to evenually having NONE. Obama is not going to allow any new weps to be designed. The weapons we have now are all of 1970′s technology and have been modified to the point they can no longer be modified, tested or even modeled. Maintenance is becoming more and more expensive and there are only so many spare parts to go around. Obama is indeed telling the world to go ahead and punch us in the face. We’ll either respond with weapons of dubious reliability or not respond at all.

Another point that is glossed over: The weps in Europe. Note the wording: The US will maintain “the capability” of delivering B61 weapons. The policy doesn’t say from WHERE though. When the NPT Review meets next month and finds the US and NATO in violation of the NPT (even if the resolution is vetoed by the US, which I doubt Obama will), Obama will have his excuse to kill another 200 or so weapons, leaving NATO, specifically the newer Eastern European members, high and dry.

rotorhead on April 10, 2010 at 12:54 AM

She intentionally criticized him to get under his skin and to generate a response from him.

I’d say she accomplished her goal and more. Right now, the President of the most powerful nation ever to exist on this planet is engaged in defensive rhetoric with a cable news pundit. He not only looks weak, he is weak. Do you think the leaders of Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea aren’t taking notice?

He’s an embarrassment on the world stage.

jdflorida on April 10, 2010 at 7:46 AM

If the president wants to ask “what do you know about nuclear weapons” maybe he would the same question of himself. Did Obama ever make a nuclear device? Can you tell me any thing this man has ever made? This man has contributed nothing to the U.S. or to society as a whole. What has he done to help Americans? And yet Obama has the grapes to ask Palin such a question?

Palin has more executive experience than McCain, Biden and Obama put together.
