Video: Unprompted Huffington attack on Giuliani fails epically

posted at 6:22 pm on April 6, 2010 by Allahpundit

Late afternoon comedy via the ‘Busters from this a.m.’s “Morning Joe.” Rudy was on to talk about his Rubio endorsement, Arianna was on to talk about god knows what, but once she found herself in the presence of a prominent Republican, she found her purpose and went to work. The interesting thing about this is trying to figure out whether she really wanted to attack because Giuliani’s endorsement bothers her that much or whether years of being a nutroots icon simply left her feeling obliged. The HuffPo faithful would, let’s face it, be crestfallen if she declined an opportunity to speak Trooth to wingnut Power. So here we go with the kitchen sink approach, starting with Giuliani’s association with Bernie Kerik, downshifting into his lame presidential campaign, and then grasping at his — gasp — support for waterboarding, which fully 58 percent of voters supported in the case of Abdulmutallab just three months ago. What she’s trying to do, essentially, is make the case that he’s somehow not fit for mainstream American politics — which is the left’s view of all prominent Republicans, of course — but … she just can’t pull it off. And darned if Scarborough doesn’t remind her of it every step of the way.

Not the first time she’s humiliated herself in attacking Giuliani on MSNBC, incidentally.

What a shock…she’s a troll IRL. She must think she’s on her crap blog and bloviating in a pea brain echo chamber.

I will give her credit, though. She figured out she could make serious and easy money off the Left with even her enormous lack of talent or wit.

Announcer asks,
“Wanna get away?”

jgapinoy on April 6, 2010 at 8:05 PM

JeffinOrlando has nary a clue.

For those that want to know what this was all about-

Scarby has been tacking more right as the Tea Party has grown because, whether we at HA like it or not, he’s been very vocal about a lot of the Tea Party core issues for much longer than the standard GOP guard, like Newt or Rove. He sees an opportunity to regain a standing he lost and possibly an audience in the process.

Rudy is one of the only big names of the Right who’s still willing to come on MO’Joe regularly. The HuffPo crowd does not like this or his current tack in the least and he knows it, because he’s heard it for months on end.

So Arianna goes on, finds out Rudy is booked and decides it’s her chance to drive a wedge between Scarby and Rudy, by hoping Rudy thinks he was set up. Scarby knows the angle and pounces on Huffy. Why? Because the left haven’t done F for his or MSNBC’s ratings. If Scarby doesn’t back Rudy, he has no prayer of getting any Right names on, and he’s done.

BUT – if he cracks Huffy and gets kudos from sites like HA…some here might just tune in the next time he has a Right-leaning guest on. And if it doesn’t happen, he’s positioned himself in a decent spot once MSNBC is swept into the ash heap. CNN will be all over him, but so will network morning shows – and maybe even Fox.

Not that an embarrassing takedown of a horse’s patoot like Arianna Huffington is anything to write home about, but . . . Rudi should think about sending her a thank you note for presenting him with the opportunity!

Anyone who has ever witnessed even a few public displays of political debating skill by Rudi Giuliani — including all the way back to when he first ran for Mayor of New York — should have the good sense a). not to get personal with him, or b). not to fling any other sort of cheap shots his way, as she did.

Back in the day, he not only had to debate his political opponents, but also had to take on and “debate” every member of the press covering his campaigns, which he did with exceptional skill, and in an almost maddeningly cheerful manner. It always disarms his opponents, and they are usually left sounding a lot like like a broken record — as she does here — desperately trying over and over to make her point stick.

To this day I still recall, with considerable admiration, Giuliani taking interviewers to the hoop, such as he did to the humorless Gabe Pressman (who at the time was with Metromedia). Rudi was so skilled at it that there were times when you suspected that whoever was in an exchange with him was secretly working on his behalf by serving up the opportunity for him to talk circles around them.

Of course, in this case, Morning Joe contributed heavily to the takedown as well. Arianna was left looking like a penny waiting for change.

The BEST part, imo, was Arianna bringing up waterboarding and then when Joe points out how even in Massachusetts there’s a high approval for its use she asks what that has to do with anything.

I also was impressed with Joe’s comments on Kerik doing a good job and how he’d never have been investigated (He was not defending him—big diff) had Rudy not run in the primary.

Hadn’t seen Arianna in a long time. My, has she turned ugly, from the inside out. That blonde fixture next to Joe, what was her purpose? Yes, I know who she is…but for this segment, no one would have missed her if she’d disappeared.

Rudi’s laugh was infectious. Joe was better than he normally is. The black guy is as delusional as one can be. Ariana is beyond rationale and why anyone considers her an “intellectual” is incredulous. She’s a marxist/socialist elitist snob, living high from her ex-billionaire’s money.

Note to self – anything Huffington, continue to avoid.

Schadenfreude on April 6, 2010 at 9:34 PM

You know, I’m reading Karl Rove’s book right now (it’s excellent, btw) and I just got to the chapter on 9/11. Frankly, I find it laughable that Ariana Huffington wants to challenge the credibility of Rudy.

I will never forget the courage and leadership that Guliani showed the world during 9/11. He stood tall that day with a greatness that few men or women will ever match.

Huffington’s attacks on him are bogus and ridiculous. They’re even more ridiculous when you look at Guliani’s resume and then compare it to hers.

Lead on, Rudy.

MikeknaJ on April 6, 2010 at 9:34 PM

Gotta love how the host mentioned that if she is going to bring up Rudy’s run for the Presidency then he can bring up her run for CA Governor! That was delicious.

ajacksonian on April 6, 2010 at 9:38 PM

You have to admire Rudy’s restraint….

But I do believe he was really thinking ‘Is Rudy Giuliani gonna have to choke a $itch??’

BigWyo on April 6, 2010 at 9:42 PM

Dang! If only AP would back & defend ALL prominent Republicans like he does Rudy. I feel a bit of man-love whenever he posts about him.

But Arianna has some nerve. Before her marriage failed she and her ex- tried to buy an election in California. She has no room to stand in judgement of her peers! Conservatives saw right through them and she’s resented us ever since. Her husband being gay, in the end was merely icing on that anger cake.

I was so disappointed when he lost in Florida. Then I got mad because he didn’t fight harder. I couldn’t figure it out. Maybe he was too distracted by his recent divorce and his new marriage.
I still think he’d make a great president.

And Arianna; Nice try. I gotta hand it to you for not backing down in the face of reality.
But that voice. It’s not the accent that bothers me, it’s the fact that it’a a monotone, evenly-cadenced industrial whine that drowns out all other frequencies. She’s the only one you can hear because of her pitch. It’s too bad, because even if I agreed with her, I still couldn’t stand to listen to her.

Arianna thinks she’s so smart about politics, and never hesitates to tell us what ‘We Americans’ should think.

She ought to run for president…

But, wait a sec, She was opposed to changing the ‘Natural Born Citizen’ clause for the Governator. (I agree with her on this ONE instance.)

She embodies the lefty troll mentality perfectly.

It was nice to see Rudy destroy her in just a few sentences, and to see Scarborough actually stand up to her in the Mayor’s defense as well. (It was nothing as decimating as the “I seem to remember you running for Governor of California” comment, but nice nonetheless.)

DrW on April 7, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Interesting! I didn’t know that.

I think that this is a good clip to show one’s leftist friends. It may get through to them better than most things would.

One thing in her defense, and a lesson to liberals everywhere: if you’re going to be a fool, at least try to look your best.

So Arriane didn’t vet her gay husband except his money. Rudy’s closing argument is to arrianne. He fat mouth discussed everything but Rubio which of course was the topic.

Arrianne is just another line girl. Every year 2-3 times, she has to hustle another 20 30 million to keep her deal afloat. she is bleeding money and doesn’t do any in advertising revenue compared to expenses. Huffington money burn rate is very high and she seems to always get more millions.

Huffington is a dope but she is an asset for all of us anywhere to the right of her which is most of us. And seven, your statement about Rudy fat-mouthing is patently stupid. He wasn’t given the chance to address the subject, if you had been paying attention, and he said so. Jesus!

Giuliani is da man!

sarahpalinfan99 on April 7, 2010 at 2:02 PM

What is the etemology of the word ‘Huffington’?

I mean, we can easily guess at ‘Baker’, ‘Johnson’, ‘Smith’, or, even at a stretch, ‘Jones’….but which town is so infamously known for huffing?

percysunshine on April 7, 2010 at 4:58 PM

ZING! Wow that was good. On MSNBC no less. I’m still not going to watch the channel but I’ll givem’ one for that exchange.

That was hilarious.
I loved Rudy’s WTF expression.
What is she, four years old? Criminey.

I had to go back and replay it to see what you were talking about, and I nearly died laughing it was so funny. Great catch.

Huffing-a-ton.

How can more than a handful of people bother visiting this crap lady’s crap site?!

Shy Guy on April 6, 2010 at 11:39 PM

Unfortunately they are usually as bad as she is or worse. I can’t stand to read more than 2-3 comments, they make my head hurt.

wi farmgirl on April 7, 2010 at 8:13 PM

If her purpose was to discredit Guiliani, she failed.

However, if her purpose was to prevent Rubio from getting free, positive press, she won. No one discussed Rubio or his qualifications.
