Ken Blackwell: I can’t believe Steele’s playing the race card; Update: Barbour piles on
posted at 5:30 pm on April 6, 2010 by Allahpundit
Reportedly he said this to Neil Cavuto, but I’ve scoured the Fox News and Fox Business video pages (and YouTube, natch) and have come up empty. If you’ve seen the clip, please forward it along.
Kenneth Blackwell, a former Ohio secretary of state who ran against Michael Steele for RNC chairman, said Steele’s argument that he has a “smaller margin of error” beacuse he’s black is “ridiculous.”
“This notion that this disturbing pattern of gaffes and missteps is now being criticized solely because he is black, and that Barack Obama is being criticized for his big-government power grab solely because he is black — that is nonsense,” Blackwell told Fox News’s Neil Cavuto.
“And here’s a person who is leading Lincoln’s party, and now he’s falling back on this crutch of race. That’s disturbing,” Blackwell added.
He didn’t call on him to step down, but as a former candidate for RNC chairman himself and in light of the racial politics involved in Steele potentially being replaced, he’s a natural contender to succeed him. Although I don’t think that’s going to happen. Ace wants the Committee to either remove him (which would take a two-thirds vote of the membership) or accept that he’s there to stay, in which case they should quit tearing him down with leaks. Gingrich, knowing that they probably have no appetite for a major personnel charge seven months from the midterms, is likewise calling on people to get behind him. Which they will, I think. As much as media types like me enjoy obsessing about the palace intrigue and as ominous as it is to have a major social con like Tony Perkins call for an RNC boycott, it’ll be water under the bridge for most conservative donors as the chances of landmark Republican gains in November become more real. When push comes to shove and the time for check-writing arrives, no one wants to punish Steele’s mismanagement in a way that ensures Pelosi will hold on to the House. The money will be there. I think.
Plus, look on the bright side: This “Voyeur” clusterfark has actually helped attract new people to the party. Why, here’s one right now:
Stormy Daniels, the former porn star who has been debating whether to run for Senate in Louisiana for what seems like decades, says she’ll make her decision April 15. More important, she announced Tuesday that if she does run — because apparently she hasn’t had enough time to ponder that decision — she’ll do it as a Republican…
She added: “As is the case with so many of my fellow Louisianans, I have been a registered Democrat throughout my life. But now I cannot help but recognize that over time my libertarian values regarding both money and sex and the legal use of one for the other [are] now best espoused by the Republican Party.”
Big tent! (No pun intended. Or is it?)
Update: Your quote of the day from Haley Barbour:
KING: Is that right? Do you think Michael Steele is held to a different standard or has less margin for error because of the color of his skin, Governor?
BARBOUR: Look — you know — when you’re a fat redneck like me and got an accent like mine, you can say, “Well, they’re going to hold me to a higher standard.”
In fact, I don’t think anybody ever held me to a higher standard than I held myself. That’s the way I was raised. That’s what I was brought up to do. That’s the way it ought to be.

Go on Ken! Wish it was you that was head of the RNC. Would have prolly sent $$$.
Gob on April 6, 2010 at 5:31 PM
Ken was a better pick for RNC chair. Was sad to see him only get to the 3rd or 4th round of voting.
portlandon on April 6, 2010 at 5:32 PM
I’m sick and tired of all U.S. Americans yakking about race. Get over yourselves, no matter who you are. We no longer care. We have an idiot in the WH, for PC reasons. It will hurt any qualified ‘minority’ for the next 100 years.
The experience has put the topic to rest, for good and for bad, especially for the latter.
Schadenfreude on April 6, 2010 at 5:33 PM
He should have been put in to begin with.

I already look forward to The Race Card’s appearance.

It is no win with Steele at this point. Best to get him out now before he can do any more damage.

Keep Steele and the Republican Party is just another major political party that operates under a double standard.
Angry Dumbo on April 6, 2010 at 5:38 PM
While it’s time to become the party of liberty and she has a point, the government needs to stay out of our lives and keep their hands off our property. I still don’t think porn stars have the capacity to bring us to where we need to go.
jhffmn on April 6, 2010 at 5:38 PM
Neil Cavuto would make a great Press Secretary in the upcoming Republican administration.
percysunshine on April 6, 2010 at 5:39 PM
Don’t think so. There are too many alternative choices to send donations and get the job done. Steele has poisoned the RNC well. If he doesn’t leave, the RNC will lose out by default.
a capella on April 6, 2010 at 5:40 PM
Just as long as we get only female porn stars to go full Republican, I’m happy. I don’t want to be the party of Ron Jeremy.

I think I heard Newt say he should stay through the midterm election.

Seven Percent Solution on April 6, 2010 at 5:46 PM
Steele…BIG disappointment.
Looking back, absolutely. But at the time, Steele really did look like the best pick. Vote after vote, I kept rooting for him. Of course, before the POTUS race, a lot of peeps were calling for Steele to run for the White House. (not me)
The GOP better get it’s act together. Quick.
JetBoy on April 6, 2010 at 5:48 PM
Welcome to the party, Stormy. We can use every vote. As someone who earns a living through physical labor, I’m sure you can appreciate how unpleasant it is to have your earnings heavily taxed.

myrenovations on April 6, 2010 at 5:50 PM
WHAT? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Steele and Obama should, and will, be judged based on their job performance. Period. And if they are deemed failures, such failure is not something that can be cast upon others just because they are of the same race.
I have a real hard time believing you are any kind of conservative whatsoever.
MississippiMom on April 6, 2010 at 5:52 PM
If the Democrats have lost the porn stars expect a whole lot of Dem Senators to start switching parties.

I think sales of her stuff with go up if she runs
blatantblue on April 6, 2010 at 5:52 PM
THe obvious answer is to keep Steele as a figurehead and move the power to a better manager.
Let Steele talk the talk (conservative issues) and let someone else walk the walk when it comes to real leadership.
This from someone who thought Steele would be a disaster from the very start.

Yes, he would have been a much better choice.
One problem though: he stuck his thumb in the eye of Ohio Republican [machine] Party.
Yeah those same folks who sat silently while Taft flew the OhGOP ‘into the mountain-side’.
No. As much as I wanted Ken to be the head of the GOP, it was never going to happen.
Perhaps Palin will have better luck in blowing up the Machine Republicans.
Lord knows it needs to happen.
Sooner rather than later.
CPT. Charles on April 6, 2010 at 5:56 PM
We absolutely should run on that, and any other fun “bad” thing that makes life worth living. The GOP should become the Anti-Nanny State party.
Ad campaign (and possibly a nod to Voyeur, heh): The GOP, Because it’s Washington DC that needs to be put on a leash, not you.
doubleplusundead on April 6, 2010 at 5:56 PM
Stormy’s only talking about a switch to the Republican party because the national Dems are taking it in the shorts over the screwups of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi while the Louisiana Dems have been in continual turmoil since Katrina.
Now that Mary Landrieu’s brother is the Mayor of New Orleans and will be resigning as Lt. Governor, there are only two Dems elected at the statewide level… Sen. Mary Landrieu and the state’s AG, Buddy Caldwell.
The only person I can see beating Vitter in a Republican primary is former Lt. General Russell Honore, he of the famous “stuck on stupid” soundbite to reporters during Katrina. Honore has discussed a possible run before but has never confirmed he would do it AFAIK.
teke184 on April 6, 2010 at 5:58 PM
We have to recognize that we have pre-Tea Party politicians and post-Tea Party politicians. Some will weather the shift and some will not. Steele? Honestly, I think he may only be a pre-Tea Party politician. There’s is a renewed passion and fierce attitude about smaller government, liberty and above all Truth in all things.
When it comes to race, Republicans need to set the narrative and not play defense to the Democrat narrative on race. Until Republicans stop playing defense when it comes to their role in history and race, the sooner we start to unite Americans against the lying, race-baiting, fear-mongering Democrats. If people know the true history about the epic Republican fights for the rights of blacks, Native Americans and women, they will resent those who lied to them and played them fools for so long.

Great comment from Haley Barbour. I think he ought to run for President as the anti-Obama. He’s everything Obama isn’t. He’s a fat, white, Mississippi redneck who went to Ole Miss and probably doesn’t even know what Arugula is. Plus, he’s an experienced conservative excutive and he’s competent. Of course Newt wants us to support Michael Steele – he wanted us to support Dede Schozafava in NY 23.
Newt had an affair while his first or second ex-wife was undergoing cancer treatment.
Sound familiar?
Notwithstanding his status as a particularly ethically-challenged ex-politico, he now bores us to death by preaching his lame “bi-partisanship (i.e. sell-out)” sermon.
And the media keep him front and center, because his very presence on national television hurts the Republican Party.
Will this guy ever leave the building?
I would rather be confronted with Bob Dole and his erectile dysfunction than hear one more word of advice from Newt Gingrich.

As for redneck, I’m a Tennessean who now lives in Mississippi, so he’s my governor and I know quite a lot about him and his record. I also know rednecks–and Haley Barbour is no redneck.

The Democrats have become complete moralizing scolds, complaining at Americans for liking everything from sex to TV to beer to money to hamburgers. The control of the GOP party machinery is suddenly a prize that it was not a year ago. The 2010 House and Senate wins will make Michael Steele look great, and someone wants that glory bad enough to make up every attack meme that a black man is presumed to be guilty of. This educated Catholic man has the credentials of Clarence Thomas and a great personality too. The color of his skin is relevant only to the attack memes selected against him as was Thomas’s, The knife in the back is obvious as a GOP players attempt to Steele his job. DO NOT RESIGN, Michael. Make the Rear Area Mother F–ckers come out in public and fire you for the crime of being a competant black man. This wasted money meme is BS. From 1994 until 2006 the local GOP House Representative would take us to lunch and begged for us to come up with a few million in useless earmarks for the District that looked innocent.
jimw on April 6, 2010 at 7:11 PM
Haley Barbour was the most effective RNC chairman in my lifetime and he is one helluva governor. Taking his joke about his accent and weight to literally use against his credentials is silly.

William Amos on April 6, 2010 at 7:20 PM
Why? Ken Blackwell is not Michael Steele. Race is a minor component of either one’s character. And Obama is a radical. Now, if you want to make the point that it will be a looooooong time till another radical is elected for POTUS, I’m with you in sentiment, but not so certain I can count on that.
What is actually worth saying is that it’s a bad idea to vote for any person for anything just because that person is black. Get the right person, no matter the racial background.
F’rinstance, Thomas Sowell will probably never run for president, but he would be an awesome choice for several roles in a Republican administration. Condoleeza Rice was a great national security advisor, but a mediocre Secretary of State — which still puts her miles better than our current SoS embarrassment.

Cindy Munford on April 6, 2010 at 8:03 PM
I would love to see Ken Blackwell become the RNC chairman, I feel he would do a far superior job over Steele.
That being said, it will never happen as long as Sen Boehnor, Rep McConnell and Governor Barbour (R-MS) do nothing to remove Steele.

AP, I pity the fool that underestimates Haley Barbour. I actually know him personally (sortof, I met him several times at a MS golf tournament that we both play every year), and he is smarter than almost anybody I know. Really. I challenge you to interview him (not your thing really, is it?). If you dare, you’ll be amazed.
I like Michael Steele, but he is amazingly unpolished. Can you imagine any of the former RNC chairmen making the gaffes that he has? He’s almost the poster child for Republican affirmative action. He embarresses MLK, and everything he stood for. As does Sharpton, Jackson, and oh yes, Obama.
By the way, FYI (and for some odd reason I feel like I need to disclose this), I volunteer my weekends (as well as my money) in support of Colonel West’s FL-22 campaign. He is a great American, a great patriot, and possibly the future of the Repubican party.
lionheart on April 6, 2010 at 8:17 PM
Since Steele isn’t going anywhere, I agree that at least publicly we should get behind him (or at least the RNC). If that’s impossible, then we should stop tearing him down. Then, after the midterms, he should be canned.
signed,
Chip Executive.
DrAllecon on April 6, 2010 at 9:21 PM
The conservatives commenting here seem to want to be fooled by easily spotted false attack memes. Wisdom is a result of living a real life and learning as you go along. To see Michael Steele’s services to the GOP as a bad because some newly returned inside player wants his job takes really hard-headed foolishness. The Party Chairman is a diplomat and and a mild spokes person against the other party. His rules of engagement forbid his attacking other GOP players…and he is getting no loyalty from his party’s player that suddenly want to control the GOP’s clout again now that it has gone from MIA/worthless to highly valuable. Why does the news headlines about scandals keep coming from the MSM over and over again? That should prove that it is a 100% wrong move to remove Steele for envy as the elections approach. Get real.
