It’s come to this: “I never considered myself a maverick,” says McCain; Update: More “maverick” videos added!
posted at 5:32 pm on April 5, 2010 by Allahpundit
I don’t think this rises all the way to the level of “lies you deserve to lose an election for telling,” but it’s so cynical and pathetic an attempt at rebranding that he deserves to have it blow up in his face. Which is precisely what’s happening today.
Much as the crowd ate up her every word, Palin had apparently missed the real message this electoral season in Arizona: for his three decades in Congress, McCain hadn’t gone with the flow enough, at least not enough to satisfy many Arizona Republicans. Why else would his rival, former congressman J.D. Hayworth, be billing himself as “the consistent conservative”? Many of the GOP’s most faithful, the kind who vote in primaries despite 115-degree heat, tired long ago of McCain the Maverick, the man who had crossed the aisle to work with Democrats on issues like immigration reform, global warming, and restricting campaign contributions. “Maverick” is a mantle McCain no longer claims; in fact, he now denies he ever was one. “I never considered myself a maverick,” he told me. “I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities.” Yet here was Palin, urging her fans four times in 15 minutes to send McCain the Maverick back to Washington…
With no prominent Democrats in the race, a win in the Republican primary will almost certainly return McCain to Washington. But which McCain? On that, Hayworth and McCain agree. “It’ll be a lead-pipe cinch that John will go back to being John, and taking delight at poking conservatives in the eye,” says Hayworth. “He’d like to have that status that a Ted Kennedy had as ‘lion of the Senate,’ doing those things that win him praise in the eyes of the Washington press corps.” “The fundamentals of my character were formed a long, long time ago under sometimes difficult circumstances,” says McCain. “I’m not going to fundamentally change.”
Seizing the moment, Hayworth got on the phone to Politico and let him have it:
“It’s a word that has been expunged from his vocabulary,” Hayworth said. “If memory serves, his campaign plane was called ‘Maverick One,’ and, as I understand it, in national campaigns they spend a lot of time on that stuff.”
“If you’re scoring at home, how many reversals is this?” Hayworth added, running through what he sees as a litany of McCain position changes. “He’s moving away from legislative reversals into branding reversals. It’s the new John McCain, nonmaverick edition, for the Arizona Senate election.”
How stupid is the “not a maverick” rebranding? Here’s an ad from 2008 that Ben Smith dug up (just one of two clips he’s posted of the M-word being dropped on the trail that year), but there’s actually a more recent — and relevant — reference than that. Check out the second clip below, which comes from McCain’s own campaign, at around 42 seconds in. I guess Sarahcuda didn’t get the memo.
Update: A few more trips down memory lane via Tapper’s Twitter feed.

He must suspect something, he “unfollowed” me on Twitter when I kept giving him the business for his always inane stances on the issues.

So Sen. McCain is now being the uber MAVERICK by denying that he ever was a MAVERICK. What a MAVERICKY thing to do.

In 2012, I would really like to have someone to vote for who at least respects me enough not to look me square in the eye when they insult and/or lie to me.
Y’know, just for a change of pace.

Beware the McJubJub bird, and shun

The Mccainerwock, with eyes of flame
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood
And burbled as he came!

I’m curious about what McCain would have had to have done to not get support from some of the above posters.
Immigration w/Ted Kennedy w/absolutely nothing palatable in that bill. Constant references to his deep friendship w/such a terrible man.
Not going after Obama during the 2008 race. If Wright was not fair game what is? Did you see Obama gloating after the HCR bill passed? He would make one of his inane statements and then pause for effect like a showboat preacher—just like Wright.
I could go on and on. Every chance McCain has had to poke the conservative base he has done so.
As far as Abramoff and Hayworth go, I don’t think McCain is exactly pure on finances himself.

Do you remember, John, the sweep of your deeds
The sound of them strumming the sky?
But now when I listen, the melody’s changed
Your words only whisper goodbye
I don’t want to morn when I think of you
But now whenever you speak, I do
PercyB on April 5, 2010 at 6:41 PM
Sorry McCain,
Your past political transgressions have deprived you of whatever options you think you have in surviving the primary.
If you want to win McCain, then accept the fact that you are whatever Sarah Palin says you are.
Chrisin206 on April 5, 2010 at 6:44 PM
I actually feel awefully sorry for poor Juan. he was trying soooo hard to be a nice guy (um, tenth mistake) and taking the high road in saying Obama was an ok guy, great American, would be a fine prez…
Well, in the words of Bill the Cat: “Blaaaaaaaqueeeee!”
To me, this goes to the root of why he is no longer qualified to serve. He. Just. Doesn’t. Have. Even. One foot. In the reality box in the “hop scotch” game of life.
My sister lives in AZ, and she is not wild about JD, but has had it with McCain.
But, at least his handlers don’t have to give JD a box of crayons and a placemat from IHOP to keep him from sticking his foot in his mouth.

What??? The old man is losing it. Sad to say but it does happen to us all if we live long enough. He’s called himself that for years! Even has Sarah calling him that. He loved it when the press called him that. Does he even have a clue how stupid that statement was?

cmsinaz on April 5, 2010 at 6:47 PM
You need to get a grip. You and Upinak actually are on the same side of the volleyball net…you’re just being a lot more vitriolic, where she is trying to engage you in a logical conversation and difference of opinion.
You’re attacking that she is some sort of a rabid Sarah stooge…but, but, but, Sarah endorsed McCain…and Upinak doesn’t…sorry, flawed logic here.

Hear me, my fellow Republicans. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will support fork tongue John McCain no more forever.

One, two!
And through and through
The placemat slipped
His left foot flipped
And McCain’s brain went snicker-snack!

JetBoy on April 5, 2010 at 7:00 PM
Once again McCain makes a fool of himself and Palin is then tainted by association for using the very term he is now disavowing. McCain is a RINO mental case and he deserves no support from any credible Conservative. I don’t know how many times dumb Republicans are going to get burned by this moron before they learn. He is a grim reminder of the failures of the past and needs to be hounded from office, not supported by one of our brightest stars. Palin was foolish for involving herself in this mess. This man has not earned our loyalty in any way, shape or form and it is time he is called on it.
echosyst on April 5, 2010 at 7:02 PM
Interesting comment.
I always thought that the more McCain kept saying he was a maverick (and he did!), the more he looked like an impotent tool of the Libs.
Truly sad to watch.
There was never anything “maverick-y” about him.
Headachy, illogical and hair-pullingly annoying, yes.

Amen, I want him gone. I’d love JD as my Senator.
Tim Burton on April 5, 2010 at 7:11 PM
Can someone with knowledge tell me about Hayworth? All I know from fellow HA commenters is that 1) he flirted with Birtherism and 2) is sort of angry. Is that all there is too him? Some more facts would be nice, preferably from someone in Arizona who will be voting in this primary. Anyone?
conservative pilgrim on April 5, 2010 at 7:15 PM
Apperntly he has decieded that the label “Maverick” cost him the Presidential Election and so on the advice from the DNC he is distancing himself from the word. I fully expect some sort of jumbled hope and change message from the flip flopping old fool before this is over.
Koa on April 5, 2010 at 7:16 PM
He isn’t John McCain. If I lived in Arizona, that would be good enough for me.

Rasmussen apparently indicates that “milquetoast” polls better than maverick.
Vote for John McCain! John McCain is quite possibly a better Senator than most other potential candidates!
Vote John McCain, a consensus builder!
This message was paid for by the David Frum friends of John McCain.

So is this the “maverick” seen in the early part of the Top Gun movie who is so self-involved and ego driven that he continuously endangers his fellow pilots with his go it alone behavior?
Or is this the “maverick” who’s become a team player because he’s realized he has a common interest with his fellow pilots and the only way to survive enemy ambushes is to stay together and not leave your formation?
I know which one I’d bet my money on! Hayworth.
chickasaw42 on April 5, 2010 at 7:44 PM
he’s strong on border security/control first, none of that amnesty crap that mccain wanted back in the day…you get what you see with him, with mccain, he’s a conservative only when he needs to be…

It’s going to be so much fun here, the day after the primary, after John’s beat the snot out of Hayworth.

You’re the only person besides myself (stated elsewhere) who instantly considered it.
Not concluded it, but certainly thought it possible since it’s really bizarre to think McCain would say it as it’s presented. If he did he’s finished. But when the issue is relying on Newsweek I don’t rush to conclusions.
KittyLowrey on April 5, 2010 at 7:56 PM
Why on Earth should such a report be “sad”?!?
I relish the news.
Here we have loser/political-traitor#1 saying that his decade-long moniker is bunk.
OK. Got that. No doubt there. No sirree.
BUT: Is this just another lame-*$$ed attempt at

to put Sarah Palin down?
I’m “shocked,!” /YAWN
Lockstein13 on April 5, 2010 at 8:00 PM
‘Maverick’ always seemed a nice way to describe someone mentally unstable and unpredictable – and unreliable.
Sorry, John – take a poll; I’ll bet if you simply asked “What politician comes to mind when you hear the word ‘maverick’?”…
McCain is the only answer you’ll get, bub.

AP sure sounds close to uttering “McCain hater” speech in this post. Exposing Mac, even in these objective, well reasoned, mildly descriptive terms should cause vehement objections by some other bloggers. Plus AP mentions Palin stumping for Mac. I wonder if we’ll be reading an angry condescending rebuttal to AP’s accurate depiction of Mac as a phony, @#$#%, *%^$#, and %!#@*^$#. Of course the deleted explitives are my own more colorful, yet accurate, descriptors for Mac, not AP’s.
GO JD! I don’t care if you ain’t the perfect conservative. You’re a whole lot better than Mac.
JimP on April 5, 2010 at 9:13 PM
John McCain lost me the day he said, during the 2008 campaign, that Americans should not be afraid of Barack Obama. That was the moment I knew that we would not win.

This Hayward guy sounds like he could fill the lead roll in ‘Vigilante’. He seems to swagger and make over the top statements. I don’t think he’s a good choice.
jeanie on April 5, 2010 at 9:37 PM
Other than his pal the squishy RINO Lindsey Graham, who does McCain schmooze with most? He appears to spend most of his time and invest most of his friendships with Dems. Maybe he thinks he is acting in the name of reaching across the aisle, but if I never hear the word bipartisanship again, it will be too soon.
Remember McCain’s rallying cry of “Fight with me”? It rang hollow in deeds.
Fighting against earmarks, McCain’s pride of achievement, is only a drop in the bucket against the out-of-control spending in Congress. While McCain may be a defense hawk, he has been woefully blind and deaf in the area of illegal immigration, its costs and endangerment to our national security. His embrace of global warming/climate change is absurd, demonstrating very little up-to-date information.

That was a pretty tasteless snark against a man who endured some lifelong damage to his arms as a POW. Are you a troll?
onlineanalyst on April 5, 2010 at 10:17 PM
Is Hayworth crazy enough to do something stupid like suspend his campaign and go huddle up with the Dems and sign on to the greatest rippoff of the taxpayer to that date? To throw capitalism, free enterprise and conservatives under the bus in favor of beginning the socialist takeover of our economy, tarp? If hes’ not that crazy hes’ better than John McCain.
dhunter on April 5, 2010 at 10:43 PM
There are a lot of people that really don’t know anything about J.D. but think they do. Abramoff was a lobbyist for the Indian tribes. Maybe some of you aren’t aware that we have tribes here in Arizona. Abramoff gave J.D’s campaign $2000.00 to represent the Indian tribes, who by the way were his constituents, he offered to give the money back but the tribes wanted him to keep it. From this sprang the so called indictment that was tossed out, but only after it cost him the election. Someone else said he has not voted conservative. His voting record can be place up against ANY conservative in either house. For people outside Arizona, please know that John McCain is nothing but a front man for those who advocate open boarders for “business purposes” Remember when he said that Americans would not work at $50.00 an hour to pick lettuce. J.D. is head and shoulders above McCain as a conservative.
jainphx on April 5, 2010 at 11:43 PM
Look all you people that even half way support a man that has stabbed us in the back on more important legislation, well I can only say you deserve what you get.
McCain in my opinion never wanted to be president. He went out of his way to destroy his campaign. Every time he got some momentum, he came out with the most stupid remarks, such as “WE need not fear Obama, he will make a good president. Tell me is this the kind of person that breeds trust? J.D. is not a crook, and deserves your respect, he’s earned it.
jainphx on April 6, 2010 at 12:01 AM
If he’s not going to retire and live off of his wife’s largesse, here’s to hoping he keeps his campaign yap shut until November…

Abramoff had nothing on Keating but we don’t hear too much about that anymore do we? Does anyone remember how highly McCain recommended Janet “the system worked” Napolitano (this after she bankrupted AZ)? McCain doesn’t seem to pay a lot of attention to what happens in AZ. That rancher’s death was no surprise to anyone who’s been watching the situation. JD gives a damn, and not just in election years.
Shay on April 6, 2010 at 1:54 AM
Really? It took you that long? I knew as soon as he wrapped up the primaries and looked like he couldn’t give a good public appearance to save his life.
Speedwagon82 on April 6, 2010 at 7:01 AM
He’s right; he’s no maverick–but she is.
All his so-called “maverick” stances are actually the same old tired, run-of-the-mill mediocre positions…of liberals!
There’s absolutely nothing fresh, bold or daring about agreeing with Russ Feingold, Teddy Kennedy and Al Gore and The Conventional Washington Wisdom(tm).
On the other hand, Sarah Palin stood up to the crooks, good old boys and corporation men of both parties on behalf of Alaskans.
