Of all the incendiary smears of tea partiers over the last few weeks, this one’s my very favorite. Not only is it relentlessly nasty, especially for a congressman — note the cute little joke he makes near the end referencing McCain’s torture in Hanoi — but it’s part of a critique of, ahem, right-wing vitriol. Come for the finger-wagging about civility, stay for the George Wallace and Kristallnacht analogies.
Then again, that’s par for the course. As Ed Driscoll reminds me, what makes this clip extra special is the fact that Steve Cohen himself was compared to a Klansman and targeted with anti-semitic innuendo by — ta da! — his Democratic opponent in the House primary two years ago. No one understands better than he does, in other words, just how vicious some of his own fellow travelers can be, but there’s a narrative at stake here and he knows his part in it. Nice job staying on-script, Steve.

There’s no question someone should be mowin’ down Cohen this comin’ election. They can even use that as a campaign slogan free of charge. This clip is great ammo for anyone who wants to go toe to toe with that guy. What a creep. Is it just me, but every time there is a post with a Dem congressman speaking (Hare, Cohen, Massa, etc.) they sound like evil, callous, lying SOB’s. One almost feels violated intellectually when they speak. I know I do. How do people miss this when it comes election time?

I lived in this district when I lived in Memphis in the late 80s and early 90s. The district is overwhelmingly Democrat and majority Black as it’s the Metro Memphis district. The 7th CD comprises the Memphis exburbs and suburbs and rural area to the E and NE and is the safe R district. The 8th CD to the north has pretty conservative voters but has long been held by a Blue Dog. It’s a historical thing. That will change this cycle with his retirement and vote on the HCR. There are quite a few affluent and conservative voters in the 9th CD, but the race is won in advance with the winner of the Democrat primary.

Cohen should be arrested for inciting violence against the Tea Party group. At the very lease, Cohen needs to get busy serving the people of his district. Memphis is out of control; last Tuesday, during FREE day at the Zoo, Memphis City high school kids caused a near-riot with reports of kids shooting guns in the air. Memphis ranks 40% for filing census, unemployment is HIGH, drugs and violent crime are at dangerous levels.
