Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on April 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe the White House should have given up MS-NBC for Lent. While Tea Party activists have campaigned loudly and consistently against the free-spending Democratic Congress and the government overhaul of the American health-care system, Barack Obama seems to have heard a completely different message. While acknowledging that a few of the Tea Party crowd might have legitimate concerns over spending and the debt, Obama told Matt Lauer the core of the group consists of … Birthers:

“President Barack Obama says he believes the Tea Party is built around a ‘core group’ of people who question whether he is a U.S. citizen and believe he is a socialist. But beyond that, Obama tells NBC he recognizes the movement involves ‘folks who have legitimate concerns’ about the national debt and whether the government is taking on too many difficult issues simultaneously.”

The Birther quip is just Obama attempting to paint his opposition as lunatics, a particularly egregious and simultaneously banal Leftist attack. It’s practically taken right from Countdown and Hardball; all it’s missing is the tortured explanation from Keith Olbermann and Howard Fineman about how pickup trucks are racist.  But the “socialist” attack is often heard at Tea Party rallies (unlike Birtherism, which usually gets ignored), and Jim Geraghty explains why:

A guy who has dramatically expanded the federal government’s role in banks, student loans, auto making, health care, real estate, insurance, and energy industries is lamenting that people are calling him a socialist. What more does he have to do before the label becomes less than outlandish, establish SMERSH? Note the not-too-subtle sleight of hand in the way Obama lumps together Birthers with the general opposition to him. I haven’t been to a tea party since last fall, but has anybody seen any signs or chants focusing on the Kenyan Secret Agent theory? Isn’t the general outrage focused a bit more on the here and now and how we’re getting the rawest deal since Arnold Schwarzenegger took on the mob? (Pardon me, I meant the raw f’ing deal, as Vice President Coprolalia would put it.) President Obama, we’ve moved on from your Kenyan birth. It’s time you did the same.

Are you kidding me?  Birthers are the best thing that ever happened to Barack Obama.  If they didn’t exist, he’d have to get Organizing for America to find them.  Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to distract people from the very accurate description of his European-style nanny state agenda as socialist. Which means that Obama’s paying a little more attention to those Tea Party protests than he wants to let on.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Seriously, how fast can he collapse the economy, and “announce” that the govt will have to “run” things for a while til they get better?

There’s nothing amateurish about this. Obama set the stage for making this a key to undermining the credibility of the tea party movement and of his critics more generally some months ago in a speech he gave where an indirect reference to “birtherism” was dropped in completely out of context. What better way to avoid having to address a group’s questions and concerns than by utterly discrediting them? The birther loons are playing right into his hands. These past few weeks we’ve been seeing parts of the outline of his campaign strategy for reelection in 2012.

ProfessorMiao on April 2, 2010 at 8:12 AM

last April 15, I went to the Richmond VA TEA party. whether there were “birthers” there or not, I have no idea.

The TEA party people in 5th CD VA are purists & exclusionary. they want to run the purist conservative available against Soros/Pelosi/SEIU funded Perriello.

When I try to mention that perhaps we should run a candidate who can beat Perriello, I am rudely reminded that I am not conservative enough to be a TEA partier & that TEA partiers are the grassroots real voters. Also, the current crop of TEA party candidates in the 5th CD can’t raise money except from their own personal fortunes. When I mention that they should let in some old “establishment” Republicans who have fundraising experience, they say they don’t need Republicans.

thanks for letting me rant.

In the symbiotic relationship that ObaMao has with the incurious of the major media, he creates the narrative (in this case, determining who the “core” if the TEA party members are), and his lapdogs repeat the talking points.

I was at the Tea Party rally in front of the Capitol on March 20. I arrived really early and originally was in the wrong area (at the back side of the Capitol) with about 100 other rally-ers. Most were silent, a few were chanting “Kill the Bill”. All of a sudden, on fellow yells, “Show us your birth certificate!!!”

There was a collective groan among the several of us in a small cluster. “There’s an idiot in every croud.” one said. “These are the nut jobs that give us a bad name.” said another.

I left the rear Capitol rally shortly after that and joined with a HUGE group of patriots in front of the Capitol. Didn’t hear a single birther comment. Saw no spitting on congressmen. Heard no N-word.

Let me get this straight – indulge me here please. We pretty much all agree that The Messiah is a Liar (notice the capital “L” which indicates his profession is lying to the American people). We pretty much all agree that we’d be hard pressed, or find it totally impossible to find a single point this Marxist has ever uttered or made that turns out to be true. We also know he memorized the Koran in his little Madrassa in Indonesia – and that all logical, sane folks, when confronting an issue such as, “Hey honey, did you or did you not pay the damn electric bill?” And “honey” proffers the bill stamped PAID to settle the issue. Yet, the Lefties at HotAir continue to denigrate anyone who believes The Messiah could be lying about his birth – despite the fact that we pretty much all agree he lies about EVERYTHING! My my………..I’m impressed with HotAir tight grip on protecting The One………..give me a break here. No one knows for sure whether or not this Marxist was born in the U.S. – and that’s the issue. All birthers want is “Hey honey did you pay the damn electric bill?” Notice Obama never produces any proof. And to here nit wits say that this somehow plays into an Obama strength – a plus for him. You have to be out of your minds. How strong is this going to make him? Like it is going to convince independents that conservatives are “unworthy” – listen, independents don’t need this Birther issue to know Obama is a fraud – they can see that clearly with a dozen other issues, mainly economic and social and national security.

Cinday Blackburn on April 2, 2010 at 8:31 AM

It was always my fear that the birth thing was a ruse distraction to discredit the opposition. If Obama is not a socialist then no one is a socialist. You cannot get more socialist than Obama. Okay maybe he is Communist.

Ed Laskie on April 2, 2010 at 8:31 AM

The Birther quip is just Obama attempting to paint his opposition as lunatics, a particularly egregious and simultaneously banal Leftist attack.

That banal promotion of “lunatic” is the neoconservative Alinsky reciprocation, enforcing rather than defying Obama’s lies, incorrectly defining as villains those Constitutional Conservatives who hold to the constructed definition the founders understood for the presidential “natural born citizen” to not only have been born in the USA, but BOTH parents being US citizens, and the candidate having no allegiance to any other nation.

Though provided the link on numerous occasions when Obama first appeared on the national scene, Ed has never addressed the Berkeley Report published and available online when Obama FIRST announced his intention to campaign for the presidency and interested legal blogs discussed the details of Obama’s aberration from the constitution’s legal standard for potus. Ed rarely commits to any scholarly historical research, all his time being consumed in contemporary conversation, spoken then published. His forte is “who says what” though his assessments lack accuracy. Ed eschews scholarly research that exposes records which make him feel uncomfortable, fearing ridicule himself. His willingness to smear Constitutional Conservatives is his own burden to bear as a staunch neoconservative apologist for Constitutional corruption, the inconvenient Constitution being outmoded for neoconservatives. It is so much easier to go along with the socialist flow, and simply pick and choose which point deserves support, smearing all the other points as either irrelevant or matters of “lunacy”. AS IF ignorance is bliss.

The MSM is going down with this ship. Every element of the Progressive machine is exposed, and “we the people” are pissed off like I have never seen in my lifetime.

Remember all of this crap from 18 months ago, pushed and replayed by the media over and over…

I’ll also institute an absolute gift ban so that no registered lobbyist can curry favor with members of my administration based on how much they can spend on a fancy dinner. I’ll make our government open and transparent so that anyone can ensure that our business is the people’s business. Justice Louis Brandeis once said “Sunlight is the greatest disinfectant,” and as president I am going to make it impossible for congressmen or lobbyists to slip pork barrel projects or corporate welfare into laws when no one’s looking because when I’m president meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public… no more secrecy, that’s a commitment I make to you as president. No more secrecy!

And, when there’s a bill that ends up on my desk as president, you the public will have five days to look on-line and find out what’s in it before I sign it so that you know what your government’s doing. When there are meetings between lobbyists and a government agency we’ll put as many as pos… as many of those meetings as possible on-line for every American to watch. When there’s a tax bill being debated in Congress you will now the names of the corporations that would benefit and how much money they would get. And we will put every corporate tax break and every pork barrel project on-line for every American to see, you will know who asked for them and you can decide whether your representative is actually representing you!

Keemo on April 2, 2010 at 8:35 AM

‘core group’ of people who question whether he is a U.S. citizen and believe he is a socialist.

1) I accept that He was born in the US, to a US mother, making Dear Liar eligible to be President.

2) Socialists want government to own the means of production, Communists (for the ultimate goal) want to go beyond that and wither away The State — setting up anarchical systems (?), Fascists merely want government to control & partially own the means of production. So is The Whine “merely” a fascist, or is He a socialist or a communist. Because He sure as hell isn’t a free market capitalist.

Discussing this whole issue makes me feel like I’m back in college, where I had people who defended Stalin. And this was 25 years ago, and I still smoked pot. Grrr.

Unless you compare Obama to Wilson, it’s hard to find another president as vile towards Americans. Even FDR used tact in his power of persuasion, much like the “compassionate” W class act that you reference.

But despite his fireside chats, FDR abused Japanese-American civil rights. Coerced internment aside, he never protected their private property to return subsequent to WWII, allowing confiscation just as the Europeans confiscated great Jewish wealth never returned to survivors and heirs.

FDR’s initial affinity for executive privilege defied Constitutional limits of authority in order to produce inflation as if that would profit the rural farming population, as if inflation would be limited to the price of food, as if that would somehow ease the starvation during the Great Depression.

GWB ignored his Constitutional duty to protect our borders, facilitating the Mexican organized crime drug trade with NAFTA trucks and vehicles crossing without inspection. Bush set up the circumstances to create easy profits for global interests with no allegiance to rule of law in any nation. His legacy includes binding the very American local entrepreneurs he claims to have sponsored. What Bush gave lip service to, addressing corruption without sinking any teeth into the matter, did not fight corruption in government program fraud. Rather, Bush was Mr. Bail-Out, and executive ordered the Sec./Treasury to authoritarian CZAR status beholden to NO ONE.

Does “vigilante” ring a bell?

RINO in Name Only on April 2, 2010 at 8:24 AM

The cost of the legal proceedings isn’t really the issue. The fact, though, is that he has shown that he would prefer to fight any legal attempt to make him produce his full birth certificate (or whatever you call it) than simply produce the document. It keeps the “controversy” alive, for those inclined to conspiracy theories, and serves his interests much better than putting it to rest.

ProfessorMiao on April 2, 2010 at 8:59 AM

I have been to many tea parties in different locations. I have never seen a “birther” sign. Trying to discover information does not automatically make you a lunatic, unless you are already unhinged in the first place. Slowly, as information starts leaking out, we have discovered that Obama is not the man he portrayed himself to be when campaigning. Frankly his actions and words show him to be a psychological mess,. He doesn’t have “American” sensibilities nor would a real American be doing and saying the things he is. He wants us to change into something we are not and were never meant to be. That is just plain wrong. This man has no business being near the highest office in the increasingly non-free world.
We are in for a titanic battle and are looking for leaders to fight this battle with us. Our ideological home should be the Republican Party, but people are so frustrated with Republicans because way too many of them are not willing to fight for us. We need every bit of information we can find and Obama’s records are being hidden from us by all leagal and illegal means he can find. Our own side uses words that previously never existed as perjoratives for people who want to know the truth.
One bit of info has leaked out that we should have known before the election, but now know because of watching this man. He isn’t as smart as he thinks he is and he is lazy. Boy, we should have seen that one coming!
Yeah, call us birthers, Obama. That really is going to work.

With all due respect, you are the one that is out of your mind. If you think I defend Obama’s policies or the methods he uses to achieve them, then you haven’t read what I post here.

Nobody knows??? Not even the governor of Hawaii, who is a Republican if I recall correctly?

But you know what? The real issue here is that this is a trumped up non-controversy that will never serve to advance the cause of those who want to ensure that Obama is not re-elected. It in fact has exactly the opposite effect. It is a wing-nut conspiracy on the order of the “9/11 was an inside job” idjits — in other words, it’s poisonous and taints anyone who is associated with it. Apparently you are too dense to see how that plays into Obama’s hands.

ProfessorMiao on April 2, 2010 at 9:06 AM

The argument against ObamaCare is based upon the law’s unconstitutional content, and augmented by the legislators’ refusal to proceed according to established and lawful due process.

The voice of the people was ignored across the board by Democrats. The Democrats not only failed to read the bill before voting, but failed to allow it bipartisan debate and compromise according to the Congressional laws for due process established by Jefferson and followed respectfully until now. Obama’s administration has no Constitutional allegiance as it works to suppress rule of law and Rights under their authoritarian monopoly.

RINO in Name Only on April 2, 2010 at 9:20 AM

It seems to me that there should be ample opportunity to shout “You lie!” at any Democrat candidate in any election for the next 20 election cycles, at least.
.
When Øbummer elevates this “birther” issue to front and center talking points he really is positioning to advance other campaign talking points as well: racism, greed, obstructionism, neglect, ineptitude, sexual misconduct, fundamentalism. Just think back to the health care “summit” where the Republican representatives to it demonstrated economic and policy talking points which made rational sense while the Democrats whined about health “scare” stories using anecdotes about people no one has ever heard of before.
.
The general population and the media understand whiney little stories and can advance those through words and pictures. Rational argument is not so easy to explain, demonstrate or advance to those who have been co-opted by the media strategy of manipulation by narrative.
.
How did the Democrat party flip black voters from Republican to Democrat? They offered government-funded benefits and entitlements for votes and linked opposition to the vote-buying laws to attitudes like “racism”, “prejudice”, “greediness” and “selfishness”. Feelings and emotions are a lot easier to manipulate than thought processes because emotions are “front and center” while thought takes a little more time to reach conclusions.
.
Democrats so resent it when Republicans use “fear” to motivate rather than “hate,” as they use.

I don’t doubt that he was born in Hawaii and that he is eligible to be President. What I suspect is there is something potentially embarrising about this birth certificate that he does not want seen. Something simple like no fathers name or something like that.

Johnnyreb on April 2, 2010 at 9:34 AM

Apparently you are too dense to see how that plays into Obama’s hands.

ProfessorMiao on April 2, 2010 at 9:06 AM

In that assessment, you fail to note an error. Insisting that nothing is wrong is what plays into Obama’s hands.

Opponents of Socialism are not tools in Obama’s hands. And only so long as opponents of Socialism actively protect our Constitutional Rights and demand our Constitutional Governance will anything constitutional survive the progressive-socialist tide the disdains anything inconvenient or uncomfortable as actually abiding by and enforcing the Constitution and rule of law.

The dhimmiwit and elitist true believers in Federal Socialism are not swayed regardless of record and fact. They are the only ones in “Obama’s hands” and are unable to influence others to join them who haven’t already been sitting on the fence, protecting their own socialist elements. An ex: neoconservatives defend the establishment of the DHS with unconstitutional powers too easily abused, as if that new authoritarian bureaucracy was the only way to enable the FBI and CIA to legally communicate and coordinate intelligence regarding enemies of the state.

The only “discredit” to historical record, scholarly research and investigative journalism is according to the Socialists anxious to sell their whole cloth propaganda and absolutely maintain their monopoly at all costs.

THAT of itself is the measure to oppose and discredit with accurate evidence. In so doing, staying on target does not require blindsiding allies. In fact, blindsiding allies is the deceivers way.

Therein, neoconservatives do Democratic socialists a great favor by damning as heretic to be purged by fire the evidence given voice exposing government fraud which would implicate neoconservative Republicans as having grossly failed their Constitutional duties, missing the mark whether that was intentional or not. Intention is on record where required to facilitate a cover-up, to be expected, and instituting a fascist bureaucracy definitely unexpected publicly prior to catastrophe.

Where he was born is only one issue. But according to Constitutional Standards accepted since the nation’s birth until Obama’s potus candidacy, aside from the “natural born citizen” clause understood to date requiring both parents be American Citizens, there are residency laws regarding under-aged mothers of babies whose fathers are not citizens. Obama’s mother was not living in Hawaii the required period prior to his birth to establish the residency required of a minor mother to deem the baby US citizenship by the law in the day Obama was born. That Obama was enrolled as a Muslim citizen of Indonesia at school under his step-father’s name is another point that Obama failed to acknowledge when he swore under legal oath for public office that he had no other names, let along other citizenships that conflict with singular allegiance to the USA constitutionally required to date of any and all US Presidents.

Obama has no regard for the American People. I am so sick of his little “there were no meteors heading for Earth, no cracks in the planet” “joke” about what he noticed when he signed the health care reform bill.

Making fun of the majority of Americans is not a good idea.

cibolo on April 2, 2010 at 9:51 AM

For such a thin skinned POTUS he sure lives in a thicker than most kind of shell when obtaining the oppositions intel. Some cartoonist could revive their own version of the Spy versus Spy bit routine [Union Spy vs. Government Spy {I know, they're the same spy}]and have a really good time in emulating the Obama administrations forays into intel gathering methods of their political opposition. Or Obama’s minions have sufficient or the appropriate intel already, but the David Plouffe’s in the strategy back rooms have suggested it’s time to revert to the safe haven of campaign mode again and again. And when that doesn’t work, call the opposition racist. That always works to disrupt the news cycle for a week, and then Obama can then revert again into campaign mode. David Plouffe needs to be interviewed by Megyn Kelly over at Fox News Channel. IMHO, America needs to keep an eye on Plouffe.

Where he was born is only one issue. I’m not a lawyer, but if it is this simple then two questions come to mind. Why are people running around screaming “Show me your birth certificate”? And why hasn’t there been a legal challenge to his legitimacy to hold office based on the other issues you point to?

Not running away from your response, but have family obligations so will be away from computer most of the rest of the day.

Back door for crap & tax, front door for the wonderfulness of shamnesty out in the open where we can all see which R’s are behind it.

US citizen or not, he certainly is ruining the country.

We need a way out.
Birtherism is a wish.
We just want him gone.

When people are confronted with a huge and intractable problem, it is human nature to search for a solution. If Barack Obama were not qualified to be President, that would be the magical solution to our current political crisis, because he would be removed from office and the entire Obama agenda would be discredited and destroyed.

Is it logical? Is it reasonable? Probably not.

But people really, really wish it were so.

Eventually we will defeat Obama and the Democrats through the political process. But that is going to be a long, hard slog that will take years of massive effort and enormous expense. Before we can throw them out of Washington, they are going to continue to do incalculable damage to the country.

You can’t blame people for wishing that there was an easier way out, that the birther nonsense was real, and that Barack Obama would just go away.

Haiku Guy on April 2, 2010 at 10:30 AM

Birthers are not going to save the Democrats…..their response to the public’s opinion is lagging. Why? Because they haven’t been listening lately – they are not listening to the majority just the fringe on both sides? There is definitely a disconnect. I am guessing the Democrats are trying to find targets on the Right, and because the Republicans can’t furnish them with one, they are just firing -blasting into the American Electorate. How dumb is it to insult people in the Tea Party movement by saying they are vulgar, than qualifying you know it’s at the core of the Tea Party, NO it’s not!

the most thin skinned president we have ever had…

The mere mention of the “s” word makes you a vile racist. Olbermann is disgusted by you.

He intends to have the power and longevity of Castro. He already owns the ideology.

SKYFOX on April 2, 2010 at 11:11 AM

I’m pretty sure Obama knows the tea party is legit, with a few birthers thrown in…and that it’s NOT completely filled with birthers. This is just the thinned skin dolt playing the victim. *sigh*

I also want to comment on this….

Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to distract people from the very accurate description of his European-style nanny state agenda as socialist. Which means that Obama’s paying a little more attention to those Tea Party protests than he wants to let on.

I really don’t think Obama looks to WHITE Euro socialism. I truly believe he’s a lot fonder of Chavez, and this is where he’d like to ultimately head us. And Venezuela is heading Marxist. Did you see the comments Chavez had toward the Catholic church? It’s a cancer according to him. Sounds really similar to what’s going on here, and elsewhere.

Wow…I really felt that one. I’m kinda gettin’ tired of this guy slapping me in the face.
He seems to enjoy doing so a little too much.
More lies about the Won exposed, (Never a Professor)…and I just love the picture of him teaching his class about Rules for Radicals…
I’ve read some of this stuff before, not all new but…

http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2010/04/02/the-truth-about-obamas-teaching-at-chicago-law-school/

* How Obama got a job teaching law: It was a political favor. The law school actually had turned down his application to teach there.
* What his academic title was: Obama was a “lecturer,” never a “professor,” not even an “adjunct” professor. The distinctions between/among these academic titles are important. A lecturer is someone who is hired on a year-by-year basis, without going through rigorous screening or possessing sterling academic credentials.
* How other faculty members regarded him: They thought him lazy and unqualified.
* What he taught at the law school: Although he was hired to teach Constitutional Law, Obama instead taught Machiavellian power politics à la Saul Alinsky, the Marxist ideologue who dedicated his book on community organizing, Rules for Radicals, to the fallen evil angel Lucifer.

may you live in interesting times…

As Rush has said, Alinsky taught him how to demand things, how to demand more, how to demand it now, but never taught him how to deliver it. Our President is stuck on Stupak, he hasn’t a clue as to how to deliver on his promises. Per Alinsky, he will attack and demean anything in his way, anything that shows him for the weak-stick that he is.
Get used to it, there will be much more, every day, more Americans fall from his bandwagon, everyday, he finds more Americans to ridicule.

It all starts in November, let us take back our Country!
