Dying terrorist making “remarkable recovery”

posted at 3:35 pm on April 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The Scots government ordered the release of Lockerbie terrorist Abdel Baset al-Megrahi after concluding that he only had weeks to live.  This week, he got one more birthday party than the 269 people he murdered in the bombing of Pan Am 103 in December 1988.  Megrahi apparently also celebrated a surprising return to good health:

The Lockerbie bomber celebrated his 58th birthday on Thursday at a Libyan mansion, defying the imminent death Scottish officials predicted when they compassionately freed him from prison nearly eight months ago.

The thought of Abdelbaset Al-Megrahi partying with family and friends – reportedly thanking God for his survival – left his victims’ loved ones sick to their stomachs.

“It’s absolutely despicable. It’s horrific because my daughter had only 20 birthdays,” said Susan Cohen of Cape May, N.J.

Cohen’s daughter, Theodora, a student at Syracuse University, was among 270 killed Dec. 21, 1988, when Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed in midair over Lockerbie, Scotland.

But he celebrated on his deathbed, right?

“Since returning to the love of family and friends, he has made a remarkable recovery,” a diplomatic source told the (London) Daily Mail.

Well, at least those oil contracts between Libya and the UK are on the mend.  Because, as we discovered, that’s all that was really important to the British and Scots governments.

Can this miracle be attributed to Cardinal Newman? I know he needed one attributed to him in order to achieve sainthood…

ninjapirate on April 2, 2010 at 3:46 PM

It’s his birthday? We should get him a hellfire.

amerpundit on April 2, 2010 at 3:47 PM

Never send a terrorist to prison, where he can be released on the whim of the next political regime. The only good terrorist is a dead one. Given the level of BS that is going on and the pressure being put on our intelligence community it must be soooo tempting just to “triple s” these bastards when they are caught.

Remarkable? I thought the MSM adjective was “unexpected”.

The shut up part shouldn’t be there. The “shoot and shovel” should be policy.

Then again, he didn’t have to eat haggis anymore. That probably is what is prolonging his life.

It was gonna suck if his birthday were today. Just wished a friend of mine Happy Birthday, and I’d hate to think of him sharing it with this glob of feces.

I rarely envy the Brits. But May is an awful lot closer than November.

Come to think of it, maybe our border policy here along the Rio Grande should be triple s. It used to work quite well here in Texas.

This is one reason I forgive Obama for treating the British like dirt.

Double tap for al-Megrahi.

Time to send a covert assassination team into Libya. Does our Prez have the stones? Rhetorical question – I know…

CliffHanger on April 2, 2010 at 4:04 PM

If one of this guy’s victims was in my immediate family, I would spare no expense to see this guy eliminated from the face of the earth. Libya? Tough, but doable.

The U.S. government doesn’t care about the U.K. Why should they care about what we think?

malclave on April 2, 2010 at 3:56 PM

It’s not about caring what we, the US, think.

al-Megrahi killed 269 innocent people, including 43 citizens of the United Kingdom. 31 passengers and 11 crew members killed by this man were British.

profitsbeard on April 2, 2010 at 4:18 PM

They should just nab him and bring him back.

This is the problem with life penalties. As soon as they get old or sick, then the sympathy sets in.

I saw a show a few years back about the “old sorry poor needy aging” lifers in prison. The whole tone of the show was “these poor old people walking around with walkers and canes in our prisons. How can we allow this?”

It’s called a life sentence.

Liberalism is evil…. whether it is ours or the Europeans. Bunch of morons.

ultracon on April 2, 2010 at 4:19 PM

A true and tragic injustice has been served here, if ever there was one offered on a silver platter like this before.

I wonder how the laypersons of Scotland feel about what their political caste has done with mass murderer al-Megrahi in cahoots with Libya and the UK. I can’t say that I’ve seen/read a peep about how totally ashamed they are of their government.

But maybe that’s because they aren’t.

Of course, if Great Britain still enjoyed a special relationship with the US, they probably wouldn’t have cut this deal with the nutcase Libyan leader Khadafi.

But Dear Leader took care of that as one of his first “smart power” diplomatic moves.

novaculus on April 2, 2010 at 4:47 PM

This is why the death penalty for murder should be swiftly and promply administered. Now because of the greed of the British government, the victim’s families are being victimized all over again, over twenty years after the Lybian terrorist attack.

And after all these years of us “Yanks” getting criticized for our seemingly protective domestic market policies by these same UK-er’s, eh? Makes “made in America” a little bit more attractive for me as a consumer these days.

Don’t worry, the Muslims are here to change you diapers in the home when you get old. Taxes from their paycheques will pay your pension.

That is the way the world goes Ed. It is the same reason that the Saudis were allowed to escape responsibility for 911 and then blame it on some anti Saudi/Islam fringe of disaffected grievance ridden ghosts.

Crazy old world.

As big a chump as Gaddafi made of the Scots, Maliki and Karzai and their buddy Ahmadinejad are making an even bigger one of America.

Just a reminder of why this turd is alive and free: BP needed Libyan Oil – Libya wanted turd released. I have not been able to buy gas from a BP station since. It sickens me that this turd is free because of BP’s greed.

LonelyMassRepublican on April 3, 2010 at 7:21 AM

There is a moral here somewhere.

I had an uncle who came home from World War I and had six months to live. They offered him 100% disability and all kinds of gov’t drugs and care. After sitting around for some time drinking and feeling sorry for himself, his wife threatened to leave and people were mostly sick of him. (Reminds me of a Josef Conrad book with the N word in the title. I wonder what they call it today.) So he went back to work, got a license to drive then a contractor’s license. He also went to the best Docs and dumped the VA.

Anyway, he died in 1968.

Lest we forget, Kaddafi is still holding his Swiss hostage as he demands millions in extortion payments and threatens jihad.

Fortunately, the Obamateur preemptively apologized to Kaddafi.

This is the new standard for rehabilitated terrorists. If they return to old school Tripolitan-style piracy and hostage extortion, then all is forgiven.

Terrorism still pays: handsomely.
