CBS poll has Obama approval at new low of 44%

posted at 9:30 am on April 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How’s that Hopey-Changey working out for you?  Two weeks after finally getting his ObamaCare agenda item signed into law, Barack Obama has reaped the reward of pushing a deeply unpopular bill through Congress.  A new CBS poll shows Obama dropping to his lowest approval rating in their survey yet, down to 44% (via JWF):

Last week, President Obama signed historic health care reform legislation into law — but his legislative success doesn’t seem to have helped his image with the American public.

The latest CBS News Poll, conducted between March 29 and April 1, found Americans unhappier than ever with Mr. Obama’s handling of health care – and still worried about the state of the economy.

President Obama’s overall job approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 44 percent, down five points from late March, just before the health bill’s passage in the House of Representatives. It’s down 24 points since his all-time high last April. Forty-one percent of those polled said they disapproved of the president’s performance.

CBS hasn’t released the raw data yet on the poll.  They want to wait until tonight’s news broadcast to unveil some of the other results from the poll.  That can’t be good news for the White House, since the big hit on the approval rating will very obviously be their lead on the story.  We do know, however, that this poll surveyed the general adult population, not registered or likely voters, a sample that should have been more sympathetic to Obama.

Two issue approval ratings did get released this morning, and both show even worse approval ratings for Obama on key issues.  He hit a new low on health care, with only 34% approving of his job performance.  Small wonder Obama has taken to campaigning again for health care; he’s getting buried by it.  Obama might do better to change the subject, but the next most pressing issue is another which Americans don’t like the job he’s doing.  He only gets 42% approval on the economy, sinking closer to his all-time low of 41% in January.

A drop of five points since the bill passed should show Republicans that the best way to win the next two elections is to promise to repeal ObamaCare.  For Obama, the best strategy might be to quit talking about it and start looking for ways to really rebuild the economy rather than indulge himself in progressive agenda wish lists for government programs, which have done nothing so far except delay the recovery.

As each of the various poll results pop out, it’s obvious that O Bomber isn’t quite the “great campaigner” he was in 2008. Each time he sneers, gloats and sticks his nose in the air, more and more voters (especially Independents!) see him for what he is, rather than the image that was created for him. The varnish is wearing off rather quickly.

I agree with those who say he should put the brakes on the never-ending campaign and focus elsewhere. The more he reminds us of what he’s done, the more we dislike him.

Aside from Obama’s initial video announcing his intended potus platform agenda, what Obama promises never matches what he signs into government action. Rather, Obama’s record proves that in contrast with what he says to appease opposition, expect the opposite from this deceiver.

It’s always someone elses fault with this administration on both the hill and in the WH. The fact is that they and they alone must own this health care bill. But more bothersome than this is the blatant, in your face way they passed it, over the repeated and clear objections of the majority of Americans. The other part of this, as I see it, is the complete failure of humility and reaching out. Had Obama had sense or emotional acuity enough to see that Americans wanted him to slow down, look carefully before he leapt and be more concerned with them and the country than with his own perceived ‘legacy’ this might have had a very different outcome. Simply said, he put himself and his Party first and the interests of America and Americans last–this is not, nor will it ever be, lost on on most of us..no matter what happens with the economy(he apparently sees this as his problem, not his high handedness)

O’bama has reached this 44% level in 14 months. Chimpy Bush didn’t get to 44% for 4 and a half years.

One big difference-the media hated Bush from the day he started running, and then got even nastier after he “stole” the election from Algore. Contrast that with their unadulterated high school crushes on O’bama.

No surprises at all. Push an unpopular agenda, reap unpopularity. There has to be some consequences for your actions. If this is the first time in his career that he has truly come up against consequences that affirmative action and palm greasing won’t smooth over, then that’s just really too bad. One way or another the adage remains the same: “I fought the law and the law won.” Whereas, in this instance, it’s “I fought the will of the people, and the people won.”

Consequences.

I have to disagree. All this crap he’s pushing IS his economic recovery *package*. He’s remaking the economy, just like he’s remaking the government into something which is more to his liking. Once those things are in place he will say we are ready for a true recovery with stronger economy built for the future.

It’s all fantasy, all of this will hamper growth and recovery, but that’s what he’s doing and I think we have to look at it that way. Healthcare, cap & trade, immigration, those three things will completely transform the way America works. Healthcare changing the relationship of citizen to government, cap & trade transforming how American business does anything, and immigration reform transforming the population of the country.

I worry that eventually, the Democrats will figure out that alienating the MAJORITY of the country by calling them racist, out-of-control loons wasn’t such a good idea. I figure eventually they will get a clue and realize that their bill smells like horse poop, looks like Madonna’s wrinkled ass and comes off like Bill Maher’s personality. It is then, I fear, when they figure out they should probably not send Sparkles the Clown out to keep hammering a subject people are both furious about and beat to death with daily.

Democrats, as usual, are their own worst enemy. If they ever figure that out, it will be a tougher fight. Right now, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

In fact, the best he can do by way of legal authority is to cite life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — which of course comes from the Declaration of Independence. I’m glad that I’m not a chicken at Jimbo3′s house.

Please provide some documentation instead of your usual bs.

Carry on.

From the Gallup poll: Gallup classifies respondents as underemployed if they are unemployed or working part-time but wanting full-time work. Gallup employment data are not seasonally adjusted.

like most people, I can’t wait until that whole nest of snakes is gone from Washington. But, like I said before, with amnesty looming and the explosion of the welfare state coupled with the bloating of government, our long term prognosis for a functional country is waining.

I guess it takes a Democrat with horrible ideas who wrecks the country every now and again to remind people why Democrats in places of power is such a bad idea.

I think that’s a small part of why Reagan was considered such a great President. He was great, don’t get me wrong, but anyone after Carter would look like a genius. Reagan just also happened to be a smart man.

Hope that comes off like I meant it. I am a huge fan of RR. Just pointing out that Democrats screw stuff up so bad that even a 2 year old would seem like an improvement.

Thunderstorm129 on April 2, 2010 at 10:34 AM

I bet that obama’s plan is to tank the US economy because his American family kept him from his wonderful father…. and as soon as he has he’ll fly to Kenya where he will live out the rest of his days like a king with the money the man or people behind the curtain… who groomed him for this and exploited his resentment of his white family… pay him…

That’s my take on all this craziness…

Again numbers please. Oh and address the affect of the Census.

Presidents do not rebuild economies. Presidents do not create jobs. Can we please stop believing that a president has a magic wand with which he can create jobs?
angryed on April 2, 2010 at 9:42 AM

I was going to argue with you, but then I realized that you’re right. It isn’t the president’s job to pass laws that encourage growth and investment. That’s the job of Congress.

Bobbertsan on April 2, 2010 at 10:36 AM

As you are obviously so smart please do tell me how many jobs we don’t need will be paid for with this year’s 3.5 trillion dollar budget?

CWforFreedom on April 2, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Jimbo …strange the things you won’t address /

CWforFreedom on April 2, 2010 at 10:36 AM

Small wonder Obama has taken to campaigning again for health care; he’s getting buried by it. Obama might do better to change the subject,

Obama is a one-trick pony, and so convinced of his own greatness that he can’t understand that PEOPLE DON’T WANT his socialist break-the-bank let-Grandma-die health-care bill !

You gotta wonder how many House Democrats, when they see Obama on TV, are screaming “Will you PUHLEEEEEZE shut up so I can save my seat?”

Steve Z on April 2, 2010 at 10:36 AM

–Temp part time work is why underemployment is up.

Jimbo3 on April 2, 2010 at 10:16 AM

Please prove this statement. You must be able to document it not just say it.

CWforFreedom on April 2, 2010 at 10:38 AM

Presidents might not create Jobs — They and the Majority Party can sure destroy plenty of them with their Energy Policies — (an I’m Angered)

The real joke is that of course with all of the government spending and the joke of a census in the age of the internet -employment will not look as bad as it really is. We can print, borrow, and spend but one day the piper will have to be paid.

CWforFreedom on April 2, 2010 at 10:39 AM

I’d like to see the GOP, when talking about repeal, say things like: “We’ll take the best parts of this bill, add the best of our own ideas, and give Americans a BIPARTISAN bill that saves money, improves health care, and lowers costs — which is what Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama should have done in the first place but they refused to work with us.”

That would be a winning narrative with the voters.

Rational Thought on April 2, 2010 at 10:39 AM

So where are those 400,000 instant jobs, Nancy?

It’s been two weeks. Do you wait that long for instant coffee?

John Deaux on April 2, 2010 at 10:40 AM

Obama might do better to change the subject

Narcissism doesn’t work like that. He is compelled by his personality flaws to convince everyone he was right.

I still remember his first interview with Bill O’Reilly and how he kept physically reaching out to touch O’Reilly to convince him of the points he was trying to make. There was a lady on after the interview pointing that “tell” out. It was very, well… telling.
