Barrasso says voters “right to be concerned” over IRS expansion
posted at 2:20 pm on April 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Republicans have had little hesitation in pointing out the stagnant job-creation numbers during the Obama administration, but to be fair, they’re also predicting a big hiring boom, too. Unfortunately, that hiring boom would come at the IRS, which is tasked with enforcing the individual mandate in ObamaCare and in determining what kind of medical coverage qualifies. The Obama administration denies that it will hire more IRS agents, while HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius predicts no more than a couple of hundred extra agents. With the CBO estimating new costs to the IRS between five and ten billion dollars over the next ten years, someone’s going to have to do a lot of work. Fox News talks with Senator John Barrasso about the controversy, and the orthopedic surgeon prescribes a lot of concern for taxpayers:
Even taking the low end of the CBO estimate, it amounts to $500 million in enforcement costs each year for the next decade. If each IRS agent costs $100,000 a year, that makes for 5,000 new IRS agents. At the top end ($10 billion), that’s 10,000 new agents. That may not be the 16,000 figure quoted by Republicans, but then again, IRS agents may cost considerably less than $100,000 per year, too. It’s certainly a lot more than a couple of hundred, or zero.
Of course, Democrats can always argue that the CBO numbers are completely inaccurate. Republicans would loooooove to hear that defense.

OT:
Personal Bankruptcies were up 35% in March. That’s the biggest increase since the bankruptcy laws for individuals were changed in 2005.

Ed, total employment cost of $100,000 for a federal employee (including benefits and admin support costs, space to house them, etc.) probably only translates into about a $50k salary. That’s assuming a federal agency has a lower “multiple” than most federal contractors in the business support industry.

Agent doesn’t equal employee.

So this is the reason why they are buying all those new shot guns?

A friend of mine is an auditor for the IRS… he is not a fan of the one, nor are most of his colleagues…. They were really ticked off at the Turbo-Tim appointment last year, and now they are legitimately worried about their well-being because they are going to be the ‘bad guys’ when they go to collect the fines from people for not being insured.

Hey ask him about the shot guns being purchased for the IRS. I would love to know his take on that.

I wonder what kind of race/gender/sexuality/lefty quotas will have to be filled to hire all of those agents.

We need the IRS to police all the people who are going to be getting health insurance subsidies. Audit them all, and make sure they’re not splurging their money on luxuries like cable TV or cell phone plans with more than purely basic options.

I must have missed that report… are you sure you do’t mean the Dept of Education?

Your math is off. $500 million at $100K per year is 5,000. BUT – $10 Billion at $100K per year is 100,000, NOT 10,000!!

Perhaps it will divert the IRS people from having to go out to poor everyday people’s places of employment, such as car washes, to collect 4 cents in back taxes owed plus interest and penalties totaling less than $300:

OTOH, other poor people will be harassed instead due to not paying for health insurance……
Gotta say that it will be the pits to be an IRS employee in the near future. Although somehow I find that hard to swallow, despite their protestations, considering how many of them revel in their federally mandated power trips while intimidating common folk who do not have the prestige of a Geitner or Rangel to cover up and/or elude their non-tax-paying activities.

you missed that report!
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) intends to purchase sixty Remington Model 870 Police RAMAC #24587 12 gauge pump-action shotguns for the Criminal Investigation Division. The Remington parkerized shotguns, with fourteen inch barrel, modified choke, Wilson Combat Ghost Ring rear sight and XS4 Contour Bead front sight, Knoxx Reduced Recoil Adjustable Stock, and Speedfeed ribbed black forend, are designated as the only shotguns authorized for IRS duty based on compatibility with IRS existing shotgun inventory, certified armorer and combat training and protocol, maintenance, and parts.

My son is graduating from high school this year, and I’ve been trying to give him career advice to help him pick a college major. In past years, I’ve always tried to encourage him to think about starting his own business someday, but lately, I’ve been telling him that if things don’t change pretty soon, he might want to look for a career with the federal government. It looks like the IRS is one of the few growth industries around. I’m sad for our children.

The Health Care package illegally shoved down or up our bodily orifice(s) does contain so much larceny it will take 16,000 IRS or others to enforce.
Do not think the left is a law abiding group. They are not enforcing the law. The regime is making sure those who find the truth in it learn to live with it.
