Video: When Jason Met Jim
posted at 8:45 am on April 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I think it’s fair to assume that Jason Mattera failed to make a sale of his new book, Obama Zombies: How the Liberal Machine Brainwashed My Generation, in his meeting with Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA). Jason introduces himself as a constituent from Virginia’s 12 Congressional District, which exists only in the fevered imagination of Porkulus data entry operators, as a way to make a point about the $6.4 billion that got lost in the tracking system for stimulus spending. When Jason challenges Moran on the issue, it gets ugly very quickly — and Moran’s professional aides keep Moran from making a bad mistake (video by The College Politico):
There is some truth in Moran’s statement, but it’s still a ridiculous dodge. We’re not talking about a few rounded-up pennies that didn’t get tracked properly. We’re talking about $6.4 billion dollars that wound up being reported to non-existent CDs like VA-12. That’s $6,400,000,000, which is more than what Democrats claimed as revenue from revoking that tax credit for employers who kept retirees on their prescription drug plans. As I wrote at the time, it wouldn’t have taken a database genius to devise an entry system that tested for that kind of bad data, and in the meantime it meant that billions of dollars couldn’t be tracked.
Calling that a “clerical error” is rather jaw-dropping, considering the fortune that went untracked as a result. Moran’s aide at the end affirmed the obvious: Jason made his point … which is probably why Moran’s other aides had to restrain the Congressman. Kudos to those aides for handling that situation about as well as they could.

Mattera was on O’Reilly’s show last night and BOR told him he blew it on the Franken “interview”. I hope Mattera tones it down a little and just lets these Congressmen make @sses out of themselves. Honestly, it doesn’t take much effort once they’re confronted with facts.

Jason is a brave man because Mr. Moran is Loony Tunes.

Jim Moran is my Congressman. He is a criminal, a thug, and has a staff that keeps his constituents from inconveniently asking him real questions. I am hopeful that he soon joins his pal and co-conspirator Jack Murtha in retirement.

Like they deserve respect? This is what is wrong with this country right now. The people in Washington actually think they are better than us. They aren’t supposed to be. They are supposed to be everyday people that you wouldn’t be able to recognize if the walk past you on the sidewalk.
If it were up to them they probably wouldn’t even walk, they would probably rather be in a carriage having a Chinese guy pulling them around. Or they’d probably rather have servants carry them while they sit on a platform.

exit question: has Mattera made the ‘worst persons in the world‘ yet?
therightscoop on April 1, 2010 at 9:04 AM
Mattera shows great potential but he needs to improve his technique. He comes across as badgering and actually makes it very easy for the viewer to sympathize with the congressmen. He zings them with one “gotcha” point, and when they explain why they think its an unfair point, he just goes back to repeating himself instead of defeating their argument and showing why it IS a fair point.
Its hard work and requires quick thinking on his feet. He shows potential but he needs practice.
American Elephant on April 1, 2010 at 9:05 AM
Another win for Mattera.
Asking responsible questions that citizens want answers to, and these guys are on tape acting angry and out of control.

Good point. I dont think that female reporter from CNN won over any viewers when she was seen as badgering Tea Party protesters. She may have scored points with the lib base, but everyone else thought she was out of line. Thats what Mattera risks doing if he doesnt get more practice.
I’m not knocking him, thinking quick on your feet in a situation like that is hard to do. I’m just saying he needs more work to ensure that HE comes across as the reasonable one not the mean badgering unreasonable one.
American Elephant on April 1, 2010 at 9:14 AM
American Elephant on April 1, 2010 at 9:05 AM
Agreed. Jason could have gotten a LOT more mileage out of that exchange. And even thought we enjoy it here at HA, I don’t think it’s really going to win much sympathy from those who disagree or are undecided.
It’s good entertainment for us (red meat), but it could be so much more.

Jason Mattera, dude, if you are reading this blog–here’s your grades. “A” for sheer stones and persistence. “B” for content, “C-” for delivery and “D” for maturity. Let’s work on the delivery a bit. You can be far more persuasive, when coupled with your stones, if you hammer with facts rather than having the predominance of your encounters be reliant upon the “confrontation.” You’re good…but you ain’t that good. Ratchet back your tone with these guys, they’re smart, they’re generally polite fellas, and they’re humans and your fellow countrymen. We gain not much by shaming them for a sound bite. They’ll tell you what you want to know if you’re respectful and forthright and truthful with them. (cf, Joe the Plumber).
I won’t buy your book (and I buy lotsa books)
ted c on April 1, 2010 at 9:19 AM
It’s a valid point that Mattera will probably get a LOT more mileage and further his efforts by refraining from acting so much like a hockey enforcer loosed just to create mayhem on the ice. The observation that he too quickly moves from the ‘gotcha’ to the annoying badger is obvious – it’s a running theme with his pieces. And it’s also a schtick which will grow tiresome and old pretty quickly – it’s already starting to wear thin. He’ll soon find he can’t do it any longer because the Congresscritters will eventually learn to scurry off without acknowledging him at all.
Wind Rider on April 1, 2010 at 9:21 AM
Forgive my ignorance, but can anyone just bring a camera like that into the House/Senate buildings? I have to assume he has a press card, right?
russcote on April 1, 2010 at 9:21 AM
Yeah, good point.
It’s hard tho…harder still when you’re trying to get as many points across as possible, because once these congressmen figure out what’s happening, they do their best to beat feet outta there. These hallway encounters aren’t like a sit down interview.
JetBoy on April 1, 2010 at 9:21 AM
Has anyone noticed that the aides always seem to intervene in these interviews and the Congressperson always has some “meeting” to rush off to? I agree with ted c that Mattera needs to work on delivery; he gets his point across, but he could just ask pointed questions and then wait for the answer. He needs to master the “pregnant pause.”
BTW, I’m originally from Virginia, and we always called this guy Jim “Moron”
College Prof on April 1, 2010 at 9:23 AM
Jason Mattera is doing what the MSM won’t do, he is confronting politicians about their corruption. He shouldn’t change a thing, in fact more reporters need to adopt his “in your face” tactics and show the public what those goons are really doing.

It was hysterically comical to watch Bill O’Reilly lecture Jason about showing respect.
If Bill didn’t have such great guests on I would never be able to sit through his show. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever had made it through an entire episode. I switched channels right after Dennis Miller last night.

these kind of encounters are a step below–or equivalent to–the one Karl Rove had recently at his book signing with that Code Pink whackjob.
ted c on April 1, 2010 at 9:38 AM
Moran’s a Moron, a common democrat.
Jason needs to grow up a little. While I have no use or respect for Smalley, one must play the “respect due” game in order to be taken seriously. Another rule is to let your subject speak if you’ve asked a question. Jason ignored both and blew both interviews. He looked like a high school newspaper journalist trying to catch a teacher in a lie.

The attitude of our Senators and Reps really comes out, doesn’t it?
“How dare you challenge and question ME?” “Who are YOU to question ME?!”
Now, take a business, some guy comes up to a CEO or manager on the street, whatever, and says, “Did you know restaurant A or B over charged their dinners by 300%?” “Did you know that store A or B was advertising toys that don’t exist?”
What do you think the most likely response would be? In all seriousness? “I did not know that, I will look into that, thank you for bringing this to my attention!” Even if they didn’t care, they would at least fake caring in front of a camera!
These clowns in congress act as though no one has a right to question a thing they do!

What I like about these videos is it shines a bright light on how thin skinned and arrogant our Congressmen are. Mention anything that doesn’t stroke their egos or disagree in any way and they lose it. We’re just the little people that should just shut up and let them get on with the business of telling us us how to live our lives.
I write to my Senator, Bill Nelson D-FL, all the time. I take pains to be respectful and get to the point in my correspondence. I have yet to receive a straight answer to any of my questions on his policy positions. Often I get no response. When I do it’s a press release. At least his staff could answer a direct question with a direct answer instead of the lazy boilerplate the send out. But hey, he does always “thank” me for writing to him.
Who do these people work for again?
crusader1145 on April 1, 2010 at 10:15 AM
The correct response from Mr. Mattera would have been…”Congressman, Respect is shown, AFTER it has been earned.” Much the same as Trust is shown AFTER it has been earned. I don’t see a lot of either being done in Congress or the Senate, and, tragically, from either party.

Vyce on April 1, 2010 at 10:34 AM
Sorry, but Code Pink taking over a book-signing by a private individual isn’t exactly comparable to Jason catching a Congressman, in Congress, about Congress.
Plus, Karl Rove calmly pointed out the blatant hypocrisy of the left…he had the microphone after all.
uknowmorethanme on April 1, 2010 at 10:35 AM
Agreed. This was more evident in the Franken interview. Mattera needs to stop trying to load his questions so much, and focus more on asking simple, direct questions that force politicians to either have to lie, avoid answering, or simply walk away. It’s much more effective than being purely indignant.
MadisonConservative on April 1, 2010 at 10:40 AM

Mr. Joe on April 1, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Again, I have to say that Mattera comes off as a jackass in these videos. You CANNOT start a video like this being patronizing and then immediately going, “it’s a place you liberals would love.” You can’t use the term “you” anything without it immediately becoming a standoff. He doesn’t want answers, he merely wants cheap attention with these lame videos.
He could make good points, but yelling, “you lost 3 million jobs!” in the middle of a conversation isn’t conducive to good points, just dumb youtube videos.
You just can’t go into a situation showing zero respect for another person and then have them answer ANY questions. If someone came up to you and was immediately standoff-ish and petulant, you would conclude that a serious discussion was, in no way, possible. That’s the issue here. Mattera’s antics immediately elevate it to a standoff and nothing of substance can ever come of such a situation.
TheBlueSite on April 1, 2010 at 11:06 AM
So you obviously have a more highly intellectual source/method that highlights these faults of our politicians and the system and percolates such information to the news front.

No, we’ll let journalists of any type (be they established or not) ask questions in a civil manner and not try to immediately piss the congressman off. Let the member of congress hang himself, but don’t give the other side ammo to use against you.
Mattera’s schtick is- quickly approach, pretend to be a fan, then immediately patronize, call names, and act childish by getting loud and obnoxious.
So far, you can see it’s worked wonders, he’s gotten these guys to answer quest…wait, his only success is gotcha youtube videos.
TheBlueSite on April 1, 2010 at 11:26 AM
My complaint is that it gets us nowhere. It only solidifies what conservatives already know about our government and further to alienate those who don’t understand conservative ideas.
I wouldn’t show any left or middle-roader Materra’s videos. They are childish. Instead I would focus on the ambitions of the left to gain more power and the plan to bring government back to its rightful place.
shick on April 1, 2010 at 11:36 AM
I don’t think his tactics with these videos are that lame.
Tell your boss the next time he gets a little tough questioning you about some financial aspect of the business that you were responsible for, you loss millions of dollars, you sent the money to some bank account that doesn’t exist,, tell your boss he’s being disrespectful and obnoxious and see how it goes.
Respect is earned! Trust is earned. Everyone of the Senators and Reps take the bait,,, they immediately can’t handle a citizen asking tough questions! They don’t like it, yet they can sit on their committees and pass laws that tax us and regulate us to death all while not paying their own taxes and exempting themselves from the same burdens they heap on us!
I have no pity for a high paid member of congress who gets confronted in a hallway with…. oh my… tough questions from a citizen! Camera or not!
They should be able to deal with it! They should be able to handle some guy with a camera trying to provoke them with, of all things, the truth!
JellyToast on April 1, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Your name calling and charicaturization is akin to the left.
shick on April 1, 2010 at 11:39 AM
There’s no comparison. Mattera isn’t Moran’s boss, and Mattera has no power over Moran in the end. He can’t deduct his salary, he can’t demote him, he can’t even fire him unless he’s a voter in his state, and even then he has little chance of any of these things being one person out of millions.
A boss doesn’t earn respect by calling you names and belittling you, those are the bosses we all hate. We don’t care what they say, we don’t respect their opinions, and we probably try our best to tune them out. That’s what Mattera does when he acts like a petulant boss- anyone who isn’t already solidly on his side tunes out or attacks his tactics. That helps no one. Singing to the choir does nothing of value.

I don’t know, I remember Republicans getting hit with all kinds of obnoxious questions and tactics and usually they respond pretty well.
I still disagree.
Yes, I think Mattera is baiting these people. But they should be smart enough to not take the bait. The best way they can destroy Mattera is by taking time to talk with him and answer his question,, show they actually care. Tell their staff to stop trying to push the camera way.
Mattera may be getting close to the line but I don’t feel he’s crossed it yet. I hope he doesn’t. But this congress has already proved their incompetence and arrogance. They remove themselves safely from the people. They only go on shows that are safe, They seldom have to face real questions from the people. I have no pity for them.
