Reason’s Nanny of the Month

posted at 11:36 am on April 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Must be Restaurant Day here at Hot Air.  Reason TV announces its Nanny of the Month, and it’s none other than Felix Ortiz — the man who wanted to make the use of salt by restaurants punishable by a $1000 fine.  In any rational month, the demand that a woman cover a “naked” snow-woman with a sarong and a bra would have won this award.  (Hasn’t her community ever seen the Venus de Milo?  Who’s running that place, John Ashcroft?)  Even the unlicensed beer imbroglio feels flat when compared to the war on salt waged by the New York state legislator.  Heck, when Michael Bloomberg calls your nanny-state proposal “ridiculous,” you know you have jumped the shark:

The punch line?  Except for a minority of already-hypertensive adults, higher levels of salt intake doesn’t actually impact health.  The body disposes of excess salt in an efficient manner, and just as with vitamins, extra simply gets flushed … literally:

High-salt diets may not increase the risk of death, contrary to long-held medical beliefs, according to investigators from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

They reached their conclusion after examining dietary intake among a nationally representative sample of adults in the U.S. The Einstein researchers actually observed a significantly increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) associated with lower sodium diets.

The researchers analyzed data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), which was conducted by the federal government among a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. These data were then compared against death records that had been collected by the government through the year 2000. The sample of approximately 8,700 represented American adults who were over 30 years of age at the time of the baseline survey (1988-1994) and were not on a special low-salt diet.

After adjusting for known CVD risk factors, such as smoking, diabetes and blood pressure, the one-fourth of the sample who reported consuming the lowest amount of sodium were found to be 80% more likely to die from CVD compared to the one-fourth of the sample consuming the highest level of sodium. The risk for death from any cause appeared 24% greater for those consuming lower salt, but this latter difference was not quite large enough to dismiss the role of chance.

“Our findings suggest that for the general adult population, higher sodium is very unlikely to be independently associated with higher risk of death from CVD or all other causes of death,” says Dr. Hillel W. Cohen, associate professor of epidemiology and population health at Einstein.

For his hysterical proposal for government intervention to solve a non-problem, Ortiz is a worthy winner of the NOTM.  What do Democrats have against restaurants, anyway?

Our findings suggest that for the general adult population, higher sodium is very unlikely to be independently associated with higher risk of death from CVD or all other causes of death,” says Dr. Hillel W. Cohen, associate professor of epidemiology and population health at Einstein.

So, Mr. Ortiz’s suggested “fix” is invalidated by the epidemiological evidence to the contrary. Aren’t these Democrats supposedly the ones “restoring science to its rightful place?” This glove (salt) doesn’t fit (increase death due to CVD).

Simply harping on the worn out meme that salt causes hypertension, hypertension causes CVD and CVD leads to death does not justify an intervention of salt restriction. We can just as easily find an association between political party affiliation and risk of death, it may be a spurious association, but is likely to be present. If that is the case, does that mean we outlaw party affiliation?

The leaps of faith made by these mental midgets to concoct cause and effect associations (and the subsequent interventions) are so loose and friable as to be utterly ridiculous.

People, salt isn’t the biggest danger, we have a greater threat in the form the chemical compound know as: dihydrogen monoxide

It has all kind of dangerous properties, but chief among them has to be the fact that is the primary green house gas.

What they’re against is you and me and the rest of the rabble being able to use restaurants.

When we patronize such establishments, it causes crowding. The ruling elite hate having to go into any eatery where there are crowds of people like us. Not only are they loathe to associate with us, but they hate when we cause (by dint of our packing the joint with our unwashedness) delays in their being shown to a table up front with a view.

Every candidate for political office should be asked one simple question:

“Do you want to make a difference?”

Anyone who answers “yes”, should be immediately banned from running for office.

We don’t need candidates who want to “make a difference”, because where that leads is nonsense like this.

We need candidates and representatives who know what the hell it is they are doing and can demonstrate it through significant accomplishments of note.

Or we can have more Barack Obamas and clowns like this guy. And sink further.

But marijuana consumption is okay.

Actually I forgot about the bad effects of the solid form of dihydrogen monoxide

Of course, what do they use to mitigate those effects?

Another example of how ignorant many of our legislators are.

The guy has no clue that NaCl is used in cooking more for it’s chemical properties than for flavor. You can’t bake without salt. Actually, if I’m not mistaken, even it’s value as seasoning is the result of NaCl ionizing in solution and reacting with other food chemicals to release flavor.

They think because they’re elected, they know everything.

Last week Democratic House whip Rep. James Clyburn said that the Tea Party activists opposing Obama reminded him of how the KKK forced out South Carolina’s Reconstruction era black governor.

The fact that South Carolina has never had a black governor didn’t matter to Clyborn. He just made it up.

I’d say he’s an idiot, but that would be an insult to idiots.

I wouldn’t trust the researchers at Yeshiva U. I heard their researchers are being funded by Big Salt.

In the case of Yeshiva U, an orthodox Jewish college, I guess that would be Big Kosher Salt.

BTW, all NaCl is kosher. “Kosher” salt is a coarse grain salt that was originally used to kasher meat and poultry. For meat to be kosher, it has to be from a kosher species, then slaughtered per Jewish law with a single stroke of a very sharp knife that gets both major blood vessels to the brain, and then the large cuts of meat have to be “soaked and salted”. It’s rinsed, rubbed with coarse salt to remove as much blood as possible (blood isn’t kosher), left to stand for between 18 min and an hour, then rinsed off.

As a result, kosher chicken might be a little saltier than non-kosher birds. Still, many prefer the flavor of kosher poultry because the carcasses are not scalded in hot water to make flicking the feathers easier. As a result, there might be more pin feathers on a kosher chicken, but it tastes fresher because it hasn’t been effectively parboiled.

Is Felix Ortiz mocking Christ?

Who said: “You are the salt of the Earth. But if the salt should lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted?”

Why do Democrats hate Jesus?

This guy needs to get together with the guy who thinks that overpopulation will make Guam tip over. Between them they might be able to make a functioning 3rd grade mind.

What do Democrats have against restaurants, anyway?

The restaurants don’t cater to their every whim?
