Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on April 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Presidents from George Washington to George Bush have found a place to worship, if they want, while performing the duties of the Commander-in-Chief during war and peacetime. While a presidential security detail does attract some attention, it hasn’t kept modern executives from attending services … at least not until now. Barack Obama explained to Matt Lauer that he seems incapable of resolving the issue as successfully as his predecessors (via Hannah B):

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

You know what? What we’ve decided for now is not to join a single church. And the reason is is because Michelle and I have realized we are very disruptive to services. … And in the meantime, what we’ve done, there was a prayer circle of pastors from across the country who during the campaign would, would say a prayer for me or send a devotional. And we’ve kept that habit up and, and it’s a wonderful group because it’s a mix of some very conservative pastors, some very liberal pastors, but all who, you know, pray for me and Michelle and, and the girls and, and I get a daily devotional on my BlackBerry which is a, is a wonderful thing.

Believe it or not, I pray for the President every day. We only have one at a time, and I’d rather have the Lord guiding him than not. I hope that the daily devotional on the Blackberry helps, I really do. But if he can’t be bothered to go to church, Obama should just have the honesty to admit it rather than try passing it off as that he’s such a celebrity that there isn’t a church that could handle him. Maybe I’ll just add that to my prayers for today.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Yes because going to church is all about having people there pray for YOU and only YOU. It’s not about anyone else who is there.

This isn’t about his self-sacrifice, recognizing that his presence could be disruptive. It’s about not being able to find a church where he is the center of attention in the way he wants.

It may come as a shock to P.BO – but in the eyes of God he’s just a person like everyone else.

He isn’t God.

Perfectly content that Odamna won’t be coming to my church. I’d hate to see the pastor’s head spin around 360 degrees and I detest the smell of sulphur.

Crusader Rabbit on April 1, 2010 at 8:25 AM

When I pray for the Precedent, I either let the Lord fill in the blanks (He knows what we need…) or I pray Psalm 109:8.

As for Maobama going to church, why should he keep pretending he’s a Christian now that he’s in power?
That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Honestly, I think Obama is one of those people who doesn’t really believe in anything. Or he believes that all religions lead to heaven. Either way, I believe he gave a false impression to Christians who thought he was a true believer.

So does he forward all those prayers from his blackberry to his daughters? Or do they have their own set of Sunday School teachers who send them lessons/prayers on their iphones?

Fact of the matter is that Christian worship is supposed to be in public among the community of faith. There are ways the jug-eared traitor could attend services without it becoming all about him and is fat-arsed racist wife if he wanted to but he likes being the center of attention and would never allow Christ to overshadow him.

highhopes on April 1, 2010 at 8:32 AM

Marxists don’t believe in God. The only reason he went to Rev. Wright’s church was for the political gain. Now that he doesn’t need the networking, he doesn’t need a church. But then I guess it isn’t much worse than Clinton making a big scene about carrying his bible to church when everyone knew the teachings in the bible meant little to him.

jnelchef on April 1, 2010 at 8:32 AM

I’d rather have the Lord guiding him than not.

Ed, Satan’s guiding him, but all power comes from God.

What we all need to pray for–and Glenn Beck is stressing this the best–is for America to be returned to the Lord through our submission and obedience to Him once again.

The idea of going to a house of worship is not only to pray for oneself and one’s family, but for other people and circumstances in the world.

What a disgusting narcissist that all he can say is that others are praying for him, so he sees no need or purpose to attend a regular church.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he does show up for an Easter service, or attend Camp David (haven’t looked at the WH schedule for the weekend myself yet).

Of course, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he sits in the WH or goes to Hawaii.

Who are these pastors? What are their names? That’s what I would like to know. I mean who would not like to state their pastor’s name. As my Pastor is Msgr. W. Foley and Parochial Vicars are Fr. J. Hauver & Fr. R. Punnolil.

I mean he could not disown his last pastor Jeremiah Wright as he could disown is own grandmother. Boy can this man spin a yarn of BULLSH*T…

“You Lie!”

(Many other Presidents have also noted the disruption, and Reagan didn’t attend frequently. It’s the “We’re going to pick a church by…. never?” BS that gets old)

Of course, Reagan wasn’t lying.

He has to get a devotional on his Blackberry? There aren’t any Bibles in the White House?

Beaglemom on April 1, 2010 at 9:31 AM

I’ve been watching this particular issue closely and found this excuse very irritating. If it was just weekly services the man was missing, I might be inclined to cut him some slack. But he’s also refused to participate in national prayer events and, if I remember right, had a little visit with atheists on the day of one of them. I suspect he’s devout when it’s convenient and/or more inclined to attend Muslim services which he knows would be VERY bad for his numbers.

It’s a shame that so many people buy the BS this guy peddles, but not a surprise in the least. After all, the church he claims to have attended the entirety of his adult life is run by a man that espouses some very unChristian beliefs.

This is just another instance where he played a role to help get him elected and now that he’s got the highest job in the land, he figures he doesn’t need to pretend anymore. Pathetic, but very in line with his normal behavior.

Great catch Ed. I have been trying to rationalize the observation that President Obama says “God Bless the USA” when he is finished reading the TOUS (teleprompter of the U.S.).

I was concerned that the TOUS programmer had just left it in at the end of the Presidents prepared statements/speeches, because it was the acceptable PC thing to say. I was also, interested in knowing if the TOUS capitalized God, grammatically correct, or was it in lower case PC.

I suspect the TOUS puts God in lower case as a means of allowing the President to tell the audience what they expect to hear but is not what he really believes in, because the beloved media has not found President Obama and family exiting a Church (reality) or place of worship (PC).

The Presidents’ recent actions indicate that he has lost his way and needs to get in touch with reality real quick – God Save U.S..

MSGTAS on April 1, 2010 at 10:24 AM

I find it hard to get worked up about Obama not finding a church. Religion is a personal matter. Reagan didn’t attend church regularly and that wasn’t a big deal.

But, two things bother me about this:

1) That he doesn’t want to disrupt whatever church he attends. That’s nonsense and everyone knows it. I know it’s difficult for him but he should be honest and say he doesn’t have time or maybe the inclination to attend regularly.

2) He makes this all about him. This, I suppose, shouldn’t be a surprise since everything is about him. But the arrogance of him discussing how wonderful it is that pastors are praying for him and that he gets a “daily devotional” from the pastors. Isn’t religion about something other than yourself? Maybe I missed that in Sunday school.

I pray for him every day, too. If Saul, a murderer of Christians, could have the scales fall from his eyes on the road to Damascus and turn into Saint Paul, surely we can pray for the scales to fall from Obama’s eyes.

Yes, I believe he is truly evil. He was probably sexually molested as a boy by the communists that his mother surrounded herself with, he was abandoned by his father, his stepfather, and then his mother, and he lost himself in the evil that surrounded him.

But there is always hope for him, as a lost soul, to find his way. I hope and pray every day that he finds a way to God. I ask you to pray for him, too.
