Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on April 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Presidents from George Washington to George Bush have found a place to worship, if they want, while performing the duties of the Commander-in-Chief during war and peacetime. While a presidential security detail does attract some attention, it hasn’t kept modern executives from attending services … at least not until now. Barack Obama explained to Matt Lauer that he seems incapable of resolving the issue as successfully as his predecessors (via Hannah B):

You know what? What we’ve decided for now is not to join a single church. And the reason is is because Michelle and I have realized we are very disruptive to services. … And in the meantime, what we’ve done, there was a prayer circle of pastors from across the country who during the campaign would, would say a prayer for me or send a devotional. And we’ve kept that habit up and, and it’s a wonderful group because it’s a mix of some very conservative pastors, some very liberal pastors, but all who, you know, pray for me and Michelle and, and the girls and, and I get a daily devotional on my BlackBerry which is a, is a wonderful thing.

Believe it or not, I pray for the President every day. We only have one at a time, and I’d rather have the Lord guiding him than not. I hope that the daily devotional on the Blackberry helps, I really do. But if he can’t be bothered to go to church, Obama should just have the honesty to admit it rather than try passing it off as that he’s such a celebrity that there isn’t a church that could handle him. Maybe I’ll just add that to my prayers for today.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Huh? So Barry doesn’t need to go to church because he’s got prayer circles praying for HIM and anyway the people would be looking at him instead of listening to the sermon. What an egotistical A-hole! Is this what comes from 20 years of black liberation theology? I wonder, did they ever even mention Jesus Christ at Trinity United Church in Chicago? Barry O hasn’t got the first clue about Christianity.

This from the current web site of Barry’s old church home. “We are an African people, and remain “true to our native land,” the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism.”

Hmm. Maybe I’ll just attend Easter Mass on my Iphone.

SagebrushPuppet on April 1, 2010 at 11:10 AM

I ask you to pray for him, too.

bonnie_ on April 1, 2010 at 10:32 AM

Bonnie, I could pray that prayer.
Thanks for pointing out why Obama is so in need of it.
His background really is pitiful.

OK. . . now that I’ve got the above off my chest, the real reason Mr. Obama has not found a church for his family is quite simple. He has reached the top of the political world and there is no longer any political advantage for continuing to masquerade as a committed Christian. According to his first book, when he went to Chicago to work as a “community organizer”, he was informed by local leaders that he would not be successful unless he was a church member. So, he found a church in Trinity United that matched his political worldview. He even says that he attended Trinity United for some time before Rev. Wright “brought him to Christ”. That begs to ask, what was he before? A backsliding muslim? Church was simply political expediency for Mr. Obama. Americans, for the most part, are nominal “christians” and they are not anytime soon going to elect a president that is not a Christian. There simply is nothing in it for Mr. Obama to keep playing the part. That is until the 2012 election.

He should have said, “Let me be clear. I sat in a church for 20 years and never heard a word of any of the sermons. Why waste my time?”

His ideals and corruptions are so set in his mind he apparently does not need to pray for guidance to know that he is right. I personally have fleeting prayers in my mind for this man and have told God I find it hard to pray for him. I also admit that when these prayers happen I also close with, “please let him fail.”

Every day is April Fool’s with Obama at the helm.

Obama is the set-up and Joe Biden is the punchline.

profitsbeard on April 1, 2010 at 11:52 AM

It must be difficult to find BLT churches like J. Wright’s in Washington DC.

Mallard T. Drake on April 1, 2010 at 12:02 PM

There aren’t any Bibles in the White House?

Beaglemom on April 1, 2010 at 9:31 AM

There are, but they keep burning his hands when he touches one! /sarc

Ed – believe me, the last thing I’d ever do is try hard to defend Obama, but I do recall a parallel in the life of my favorite president (and probably yours too). I listened to an interview with Michael Reagan who spoke to his father, President Ronald Reagan, towards the tale end of Reagan’s wonderful 8 years as president. It was Eastertide and the President told his son how much he hated to miss attending worship services – it was one of the things he missed most about being president.

Reagan believed that his presence and the presence of the secret service detail would detract too much from the proper focus on our Lord that worship services require. Furthermore, I think Ronald mentioned to Michael how terrible he would feel if anything did happen just because he was present in the church. So this is, perhaps, the ONE time anyone will ever see or hear me agreeing with Obama.

Of course, Reagan did have the added incentive to avoid such crowds after his narrow escape from the assasination attempt made on him in his first term.

kscheuller on April 1, 2010 at 12:08 PM

Ed- I agree with kscheuller. This is probably a non-starter. As was pointed out, Reagan basically used the same reasoning as to why he didn’t attend church regularly, even before the assasination attempt. Personally, as for Obama, I would have been shocked and thought him even more hypocritical if he had attended some mainstream church after all those years at Trinity. All that said, I pray every day for our leaaders and our country. I’d like to think he takes his beliefs seriously enough to do the same.

How sad (and telling) that Barry is focused on what he would bring to a church and not what his family would give or receive.

FeFe on April 1, 2010 at 1:10 PM

Did anyone ever tell Obama that the purpose of church is to worship God, and listen to God’s word, not have others pray for you?

But for Obama, every mirror is a church.

Steve Z on April 1, 2010 at 1:16 PM

0bama is too busy worshipping himself to be bothered with the real Lord and Savior.

Deanna on April 1, 2010 at 12:37 PM

The problem is, Obama essentially promised to find a church, then delayed and is now using “disruption” as an excuse.

If he didn’t know a POTUS attending services with Secret Service in tow would create a scene when he was making his earlier statements, he’s an idiot.

Hmmmm…

cs89 on April 1, 2010 at 2:20 PM

He should ask George Bush how to manage the situation.
The only time he does anything successfully is when he follows Bush’s policies.

DDT on April 1, 2010 at 2:28 PM

Obama is a Godless man, and THAT is the reason he doesn’t go to church, not that he’s the Paris Hilton of DC.

disa on April 1, 2010 at 2:52 PM

Believe it or not, I pray for the President every day. We only have one at a time, and I’d rather have the Lord guiding him than not.

Funny thing about that, Ed, is that I consider Obama to be a trial that God has given America.

How we deal with him will be a test of our individual and national character.

Liar…

Army Brat on April 1, 2010 at 2:56 PM

Yet it wasn’t disruptive to a hate-mongering racist Marxist like Jeremiah Wright to feature the Obamas for 23 years?

DANEgerus on April 1, 2010 at 2:56 PM

Maybe I’ll just add that to my prayers for today.

“Dear Lord, save us all from arrogant deceivers”.

Marxists don’t go to church. He is a former Muslim who turned atheist.

Schadenfreude on April 1, 2010 at 3:06 PM

So God has been relegated to the same status as a tweet, amazing.

If Obama isn’t religious I don’t have a problem, well besides the fact he lied to us but I expect that from him, but don’t try to fool us with this BS>

Rbastid on April 1, 2010 at 4:07 PM

I guess Fred Phelps moves around too much for Obama to regularly attend.

malclave on April 1, 2010 at 4:26 PM

So Barry thinks the church should come to him:

This sounds to me like serious “stage 4 terminal meglomania:!!!

landlines on April 1, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I pray for him every day, too. If Saul, a murderer of Christians, could have the scales fall from his eyes on the road to Damascus and turn into Saint Paul, surely we can pray for the scales to fall from Obama’s eyes.

Yes, I believe he is truly evil. He was probably sexually molested as a boy by the communists that his mother surrounded herself with, he was abandoned by his father, his stepfather, and then his mother, and he lost himself in the evil that surrounded him.

But there is always hope for him, as a lost soul, to find his way. I hope and pray every day that he finds a way to God. I ask you to pray for him, too.

bonnie_ on April 1, 2010 at 10:32 AM

As a born-again Christian, I know this to be true. But until and unless he recognizes and confesses his sinfulness, he will never find his way to God.

And there are those people who are so evil that they have become reprobate.

I’m just sayin…

GrannyDee on April 1, 2010 at 8:01 PM

You know what stands out here is his Me ME ME ME, pray for me. What we need to do is pray for this country he is quickly destroying.

Ed Laskie on April 2, 2010 at 1:02 AM

Is that what he goes to church for to ask for favors from God. Pray for him? Wow how revealing, he don’t need to go to church because everyone is praying for him. This is really perverted faith.
In his own words>>>>>

I’ve got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. —Obama.
and..
You know, my faith is one that admits some doubt–Obama.
