Gadget reviewers having out-of-body experiences over the iPad

Alternate headline: “Chump blogger tempted to blow a thousand bucks on oversized iPod.”
Dude, talk me out of this. This is officially an intervention.
For the past week or so, I have been testing a sleek, light, silver-and-black tablet computer called an iPad. After spending hours and hours with it, I believe this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop. It could even help, eventually, to propel the finger-driven, multitouch user interface ahead of the mouse-driven interface that has prevailed for decades…
It’s qualitatively different, a whole new type of computer that, through a simple interface, can run more-sophisticated, PC-like software than a phone does, and whose large screen allows much more functionality when compared with a phone’s. But, because the iPad is a new type of computer, you have to feel it, to use it, to fully understand it and decide if it is for you, or whether, say, a netbook might do better…
My verdict is that, while it has compromises and drawbacks, the iPad can indeed replace a laptop for most data communication, content consumption and even limited content creation, a lot of the time.
That’s from Walt Mossberg’s review in the Journal but all the top gadgetheads are in accord. Gizmodo’s compiled a handy dandy table of pullquotes from their raves in case you want to compare and contrast; if you’re more interested in the device’s major features, Live Science has a quick and painless rundown. The biggest surprises? Per Mossberg, there’s no eye strain from reading e-books on the backlit screen. And battery life is sensational — even longer than Apple’s claim of 10 hours, according to several reviewers. The word processing suite is supposedly a bit glitchy, but then this thing isn’t aimed at business consumers (yet). It’s a laptop replacement if you use your laptop for browsing, media, maybe drafting the occasional letter, and pretty much nothing else. Which, come to think of it, I do.
One fun fact not mentioned elsewhere that I only discovered recently: It’s not a standalone device. Read the fine print in the right-hand column on Apple’s tech specs page and you’ll see that the system requirements include a PC or Mac. Not a huge deal for HA readers since we all have access to computers already, but for the casual computer user who was thinking the iPad might suffice as their only device, think again. As for cost, granted, this thing is a steal compared to Apple rollouts of yesteryear, but unlimited 3G will run you an extra $30 a month. (Good news: AT&T’s already warning about being over capacity.) You can do without it and choose to rely on Wi-Fi if you like, but then you risk being without a signal when you’re on the go. And, if you happen to be dumb enough not to have a wireless router at home — ahem — you’ll have to pony up a little extra cash (or not so little) to get yourself one of those too. So yes, the low-end models are only $499, but in my case it’ll approach a thou. And yet.
Exit question: Why should I say no? It’s just a big iPod, right? Next year’s version will be twice as awesome and half the price, no? Insanely enticing stories like this are just pie in the sky, are they not? Talk to me.

I heard that Apple has pulled all advertising from Fox. This is a good time for a boycott.

Laptop. I’m not holding the thing in mid air while I’m typing or reading something.

Nope.
Buy it and seven black long-sleeved mock turtleneck shirts.

Do you drive for UPS or FedEx… then why… does it have handwriting recognition software like an old Palm???… mini laptops are under $400 bucks, phones fit in your pocket…
The fly honeys in Manhattan really only care if you carry an Amex Black, with this in you’re hands, you’re the delivery boy… buy an Armani suit…

you mean they pulled all of their irritating ads from the highest rated news network just as they’re launching a questionable product that has had no success in other forms and is already the target of ridicule and easy one-liners? Not to mention run-on sentences, like mine.
Well now, that sounds like good business sense. Stinkin’ hippies.
They’ve earned my derisive laughter. By the way, I’m writing this on my iPhone.

Until this point, Apple products were geared towards people incapable of using a 2-button mouse. The iPad is geared towards people incapable of using a 1-button mouse.

As of this writing, my Mac mouse has 5 buttons, and Microsoft products are still geared towards people who like staring at blue screens, which is why they’ve had soooooo much time to think about all the reasons why a PC is better than a Mac. And one has finally been found – the obsolete ability to right-click.
Do you want to know why iPad sales will go through the roof? Because I use my iPod touch (rarely for music BTW) almost as much as I use my computer, and I make my living on my computer.
An oversized iPod? What could possibly be better than that?

My 12 yr old son told me today he’s saving up to buy an iPad because he wants a larger faster touch format to play his RPG & the like applications. He can’t do that with a regular computer.

To date, the iPad lacks support for the Flash technology
Have it make sure it can do the things he wants to do before he actually buys it. The Tech community – even Apple fanatics – aren’t big on the i-pad because it lacks even the most basic video support because it does not support Flash. Here’s an example of an article that explains the problem.
Apple Promotes iPad-Friendly Web Pages
The world is full of tablet PCs that are REAL functioning computers – it’s amazing that people think the i-pad is anything new or innovative. I was just looking at an Acer that transforms from a laptop to a tablet with a few swivels of its screen. Now that’s innovative compared to the i-pad. Next year Apple will add that and people will think it’s another amazing Apple innovation. It’s kind of funny actually.

Isn’t typing going to be ergonomic hell with this thing? If you keep it flat, you kill your back and neck (looking straight down). If you angle it up, you kill your wrists.

Sorry, it’s an Apple product, therefore it sucks.

A wise man once said that the best way to get rid of temptation is to give in to it.
That’s my rationale for getting an iPad anyway.
As for the very logical, very rational naysayers: Dude, go over the history of the iPod and the iPhone. People pretty much said the same things they’re saying about the iPad now. Didn’t matter. Apple still sold a gazillion of these things.
avindo on April 2, 2010 at 12:42 PM
I have an IPHONE. However, This device will NEVER replace my netbooks or laptops until apple quits restricting access to the internal memory, puts standard USB ports on it, permits standard device connectivity to it and enables normal memory upgrades and all the other things NETBOOKS let you do.
Sorry APPLE, no sale here. “unlock” the device first, then I will consider it.

You’ll be p*ssed off when Apple cuts the price by $200 and increases the capacity in the next six months. Remember how Apple screwed over the original iPhone purchasers?
Having said that, I may go out and buy one in a year. The instant streaming Netflix app, among others, looks like a real killer app.
Jimbo3 on April 2, 2010 at 2:52 PM
AP, would that be the same Apple that just LOVES Che and added Al Gore to their board?
Avoid it! They call Glenn Beck a hater and put Che on their app store.
PastorJon on April 2, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Just wait a few months and the Gubmint will be passing them out for free to everyone.
gregbert on April 3, 2010 at 12:57 AM
AP – I feel your pain. I’ve consistently said I wasn’t going to buy one, because it’s limited in connectivity (USB? What’s that?) and will surely be improved upon in v2.0
Mossberg, damn his scaly hide, pushed me over the edge, and I preordered the 64GB WiFi+3G version the other night. Worst case, it’ll sit unused, just like my Apple MacBook.
