Video: When Jason Met Al

posted at 8:48 am on March 31, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

If Jason Mattera’s meeting with Tom Harkin made one feel momentarily sorry for the outfoxed Senator, one has to have some grudging admiration for Al Franken in this hilarious sequence. Unlike Harkin and most other members of Congress who mutter platitudes when challenged by a constituent with a camera, Franken gets angry — and lets Jason know it.  Alyssa Cordova of the Claire Boothe Luce Institute must have had a tough time keeping up with Jason, Franken, and the two Franken aides that kept throwing themselves between the two until Franken got annoyed with them as well.  Franken wanted to play, and Jason was happy to let him do so:

Franken spent enough time in New York to learn how to deal with Brooklyn speed-talkers, so the “You won’t let me finish” complaint, while accurate in the beginning of this exchange, hardly amounts to a defense. When Jason finally does slow his delivery, all Franken can do is complain about the question rather than answer it. Heck, Jason forgot to ask Franken whether he would buy a copy of his new book, Obama Zombies: How the Liberal Machine Brainwashed My Generation. Franken’s a big fan of political polemics, after all, having written a few himself.

At least Franken provides some fireworks for Mattera. The last match screamed for a referee to call a TKO.

Al Franken Is A Big Fat Idiot.

On sale at a book store near you!

Able to push around a bunch of old twats in the senate.

How manly.

most large corporations who want to retain their very best workers already allow nursing mothers the break time needed and have exercise facilities. its always the private sector that acts in accordance to competition to retain the very best talent that provides for their employees. its only the public sector that feels the need to mandate.

Franken is a loud mouth idiot and one can only wonder about the stability of those that elected him.

rplat on March 31, 2010 at 8:56 AM

I really don’t like Franken, but that aside, Mattera didn’t do himself any service here. He really should have let Franken not answer the question and then gone after him, instead of persistently interrupting.

Franken is Soros minus brains, money and class.

They both have bad circuits in the cognition, analysis and reality areas of the brain.

IlikedAUH2O on March 31, 2010 at 8:59 AM

I hate this health care bill, but some of Mattera’s confrontations strike me as less worthy than others. Picking out some goofy provision in the bill doesn’t speak to whether the bill contains costs (the bill *doesn’t* contain costs, but that’s not how you demonstrate that).

And Franken is right that Mattera started speechifying whenever he started to respond. This is not how an interviewer acts if they want a serious substantive response.

I love a lot of Mattera’s stuff, especially his videotaped confrontation with the AARP. But if I weren’t already of the view that the health care bill stinks, and if I were seeing this as a neutral observer, I’d score this one for Franken.

The new movie just released (THE MAN WITHOUT A BRAIN)Staring Al Franken as Al Franken .This movie goes much further into the man Al Franken than his previous movies(Al Franken the man with no courage)or who could forget (Al Franken the man with no talent)Movies experts are saying this new movie maybe Al,s best work yet but still may have a hard time beating the revenue from his last film which grossed $1.98 world wide. This new movie opens in 2 days and then will be available at truck stops and flea markets in Mexico.

thmcbb on March 31, 2010 at 9:04 AM

I like Jason, and appreciate the job he is doing. But sometimes you have to let someone hang themselves. When Franken complains about the question, he should have asked for Franken’s interpretation of the language. I would have liked to hear big Al try to explain what sorts items are “infrastructure to support physical activity in playgrounds”? (paraphrase) Instead, there is a short “yes it is, no it isn’t” moment toward the end, which leaves me wanting more.

Franken is a jerk. And a clueless jerk at that. However, he is sharp, so for the most part thwarts the attack. I would love to see someone really put him in his place.

All that being said, I think Jason does a great job and he and others like him are providing an invaluable service to the citizens of this country….actual Journalism!

Rovin on March 31, 2010 at 9:05 AM

No, we do not have to have “grudging admiration” for this lying, illegitimate sack of excrement, and supposedly elected public servant, for attempting to bully his way through a halfways confrontational interview.

Al Franken could jump over the Statue of Liberty and catch a 747 between his teeth and still not merit my admiration, grudging or otherwise.

The only thing I can give Franken credit for is taking the time to stop in that stairwell to look at what Jason was talking about. Unlike Harkin.

Let him answer and then do a come back next time.

This is why we need a man like Tim Pawlenty as the Republican nominee for Pres in 2012.Tim Pawlenty who set back and did absolutely nothing to stop Al Franken and the Dems from stealing the election in 2008.With people like Pawlenty as our leader we can expect to never win anything.

thmcbb on March 31, 2010 at 9:24 AM

I would caution Jason to stick to the meat of the issue rather than let the snarks undermine his points. It can do that and he does need to have a balance weighing heavily on the facts

Senator Smalley was only interrupted when he wasn’t answering the question…which was every time.

The more “journalists” let these people blab on and on about nothing while purposely not answering the questions…the more they will do it. It’s not come to the point that people are mad because the interviewer DIDN’T let the interviewee get away with a rambling rant about nothing relevant to the question.

Hell, Obama can talk for 5 minutes after he’s asked a questions and never answer it.

A true reporter does not let people get away with that crap.

Hats off to Jason. If Al didn’t want to be interruped, he should have just answered the damn questions.

The Left shuts everyone down and doesn’t allow them to speak, even more unfortunate is when you stoop to their level and become them.

AprilOrit on March 31, 2010 at 11:19 AM

Mattera walks up and asks a series of rapid fire questions, then when Franken opens his mouth he repeats the questions in a tone that suggests Franken is going to dodge the question. Then he repeatedly starts talking again as Franken begins to talk.

Would YOU answer questions from someone who immediately has an accusatory tone and won’t let you get two words out before he starts blathering again, repeating what he’s already asked thirty times? And if he really wanted answers, he wouldn’t ambush Franken…did Franken write the bill? Did Franken add the language about gym equipment?

Once you come up to someone and immediately establish yourself as the enemy, you’re declaring you don’t want an honest debate, and Mattera doesn’t. His sole goal is to get a good youtube clip of him accosting a member of Congress.

That is made obvious when he says “Senator Smalley” a mere 30 secs into the video!

Come on, folks, think for yourselves.

TheBlueSite on March 31, 2010 at 11:20 AM

Franken doesn’t have the cojones to confront his adversaries directly. He writes books, then puts Rush on the cover hoping that will help his sales. He’s a coward and a buffoon who couldn’t even be a success on a radio show propped up by George Soros’ dirty money.

I’m kind of glad he never answered the question, since I’m not interested in anything that clown has to say.

fogw on March 31, 2010 at 11:24 AM

AprilOrit,

Legitimate discourse with leftists is impossible because they LIE. Everything that comes out of their mouths are lies, obstruction, obfuscation and projection.

Franken had every opportunity to answer the questions, he chose to repeatedly obfuscate and avoid by saying ‘Would you let me answer the question’. He could have used that time to answer the question but he couldn’t because he didn’t have an answer.

Also, if you write like a troll and attack like a troll, you probably are a troll.

Wrong. We criticize Materra because he is not effective. His methods are lame. Liberals do the same thing. His points mostly are fine but he’s too shallow to go beyond them. His methods are no more or less effective than they are when he performs them in front of his mirror. Give me, Malkin, Levin, Limbaugh, Ryan, Cantor who can really “interview” or interact with those they oppose over this guy anyday.

Just like looney Code Pink the other night when they would not allow Karl Rove to speak.

Amen, well put.

Democrats are effective and their methods are not lame. Look at the growing success of the food stamp programmes, the unemployment programmes. Those enrollment numbers are indicators of great success. Democrats will take care of needs and wants. Stop asking democrats questions and sit back and enjoy life.

Nonsense. See, this is what ideology can do to a person. The video is there to see.

Examine the exchange.

Walk up to Franken quickly, introduce yourself. Ask question about vague part of 2, 000 page healthcare bill. Say the bill gives $7 billion for “jungle gyms.” When Franken gets close to see the paper and starts to open his mouth Mattera IMMEDIATELY talks, saying “you should know!” Franken asks him to show him this in the bil. Cut to bill language, make it seem as if jungle gyms and skate parks are specifically covered.

Jason: “Why is that the job of the federal govt?”
Franken: “Now, let me…”
Jason: (louder) “Why is that the job of the federal govt?”

blah blah blah..

“Senator Smalley, I’m listening…”

Franken: “My point…” (interrupted)
Jason: Maybe you can talk about…blah blah blah.

You folks are blind if you really think he allowed Franken any opportunity to speak.

Wow a new Axleturd directive must have been made…So many trolls.

They send in one troll, and then have 2 or 3 more come in and respond to the first.

It gives the appearance of concensus I suppose.

Nevermind the fact that Senator Smalley is cancer to this Great Country along with all these other moron Congressmen who don’t read the f*cking sh*t that will affect 100% of Americans.

Let’s make fun of the New Yorker’s voice, since that’s obviously the important thing and will lead to peace and prosperity and a more unified nation.

Well, if you watched the video…

I can only conclude that you are blind and/or deaf.

uknowmorethanme on March 31, 2010 at 11:35 AM

Democrats never interrupt and engage only in high brow political discourse. Democrats never engage in gotcha type guerrilla journalism. Democrats don’t have bias in their journalism. They are most effective and not irritating. There is no need for dissent because they will take care of everyone. Take for instance democrat Joe Biden asking all those nice Missouri people to stand up for Chuck Grassely. Or when democrat Joe Biden confessed to using slight accents in order to communicate with his constituents. Democrats care.

Like I said- blind. Some people are blinded by ideology. They’ll watch a video where someone repeatedly interrupts someone and acts like a petulant child, but they’ll swear all day it never happened.
