Video: Remember when the media thought hateful political rhetoric was cool?

posted at 5:35 pm on March 31, 2010 by Allahpundit

Hint: It wasn’t that long ago, although given the blackout on this sort of thing at the time, you can’t blame people like Gibbsy for thinking that it never happened. This trip down memory lane comes from Evan Coyne Maloney, not as an apology for recent threats against the Democrats, of course, but as an indictment of the insane double standard practiced by the establishment left in raising alarms about irresponsible rhetoric. How insane? Take two minutes and work your way through this post at Verum Serum. It’s worth it. (There’s even a Palin angle!) The open question is why the double standard exists in the first place. Fear of the threat from militias, which the FBI says is exaggerated? Secret agreement among mainstream lefties that Bush really might have aspired to be a new Hitler? Or is it good ol’ fashioned partisan political advantage at work? As you might have guessed, I’ll take what’s behind door number three.

You cant expect anything but hypocracy from the left. They have no truths just “Feelings”

William Amos on March 31, 2010 at 5:38 PM

BTW I just seen on Gawker that they are accusing Sarah Palin of inciting violence again. This time it was because she told people to stop anyone with an obama bumper sticker and ask them how that change is working out.

Some nut in Tennessee who was drunk assaulted a driver with an Obama bumper and was labeled by the left as “A tea Party fanatic” without any evidence he belonged to the tea party.

Investigative Journalism apparently doesn’t exist under Democratic Administrations.

Because, like, why investigate what you agree with?

It might slow it down.

Which would be bad.

The Rule is: win.

This is another example of why we need more handheld projectors out there. If some Dem polticial is ragging on the tea party people and how they are full of hate, pop out the hand held projector, crank-up any audio it may produce and show a video like this.

Wouldn’t be so scary if it wasn’t an actual quote.

(not to be overshadowed by the “We’ll have to come out and kill somebody, I guess”, which was a few moments later).

Somehow, after watching that video, birthers don’t seem as kooky anymore. Assuming that aliens have formed a shadow government doesn’t seem as kooky, either. (Although two of them referenced a “shadow government”…)

I wish I could say that this was a minority fringe of the Left. I wish I could say that…

CatsGodot on March 31, 2010 at 5:59 PM

The open question is why the double standard exists in the first place.

Yep, this is the question. Does it start in “J” school? And, will it be the death of American “journalism” as we have known it? Is it already dead and we are witnessing state run media?

d1carter on March 31, 2010 at 6:00 PM

The mildest thing I recall hearing about Bush was that he was ‘talking down’ the economy. The Left’s rhetoric went downhill from there.

And I’m still waiting to hear of arrests for threats and assaults against Democrats.

Here’s another:

Let them own land or factories as much as they please. The decisive factor is that the State, through the Party, is supreme over them, regardless of whether they are owners or workers. All that is unessential; our socialism goes far deeper. It establishes a relationship of the individual to the State … Why need we trouble to socialize banks and factories? There are a million socialists you could use to compare them to, but instead you use the ones that decided to put people in ovens. You’ve Godwinned this thread. Kindly refrain from now on.

Allahpundit on March 31, 2010 at 6:18 PM

Paranoia, hypocricy, all of that.

The other day I saw a post at Powerline about the 2008 RNC convention in Minn…when the lefties were throwing rocks through bus windows and dropping sand bags off the interstate into traffic below. Needless to say the media did not think that was anything to get worked up about.

But so far, when I see the polls showing that the American people seem to have positive feelings about the Tea Party movement, I can not help but think that the only people the left is fooling with a lot of this is themselves. People have been watching these loons riot, rant and rave for years. Kind of late to play the victim now.

jeanneb on March 31, 2010 at 6:34 PM

My theory is that liberalism is caused by some chemical reaction that occurs first in the brain when one obtains the age of 19-20 years old. I believe that this phenomenom then remains there in the brain of the liberal until certain events take place in one’s life that negates the chemical reaction. Life, usually has this effect along with responsibility, clarity and a move toward values. The chemical reaction lies there in the brain of the liberal and clouds their judgment and logic; it is akin to being lobotomized. The individual only “feels” and cuts off all cognizant responses to ideals of what is right and wrong. It is a sort of laziness where one relies on the heart to do the work of the brain. Don’t misconstrue, some of these people are brilliant, intellectually. The portion of the brain that reacts to social mores and ideals is undeveloped.

Thank God most of these liberals will develop this part of the brain sometime in their thirties, or even later. But some are destined to be afflicted with this malady for the rest of their lives.

Chip on March 31, 2010 at 6:45 PM

carbon_footprint on March 31, 2010 at 6:40 PM

I would like to add that the environment that exists in universities nurtures this chemical reaction in the brains of liberals. I also believe that drugs, alcohol and no consequences for one’s actions allows this curse to grow and live in their brain like a parasite. The culture of the university is one where most of the professors are stuck with this disease and therefore propagate it to the students. The music, film industry and media are enablers to the afflicted.

A simple way to determine whether the right to dissent in a particular society is being upheld is to apply the town square test: Can a person walk into the middle of the town square and express his or her views without fear of arrest, imprisonment, or physical harm? If he can, then that person is living in a free society. If not, it’s a fear society.

I read this years ago. And I always remember it in cases like this.

(FYI – it’s Natan Sharansky)

I really don’t get what AP got worked up over. Chip didn’t compare anyone to Hitler. He merely reminded folks that Hitler was a socialist, which was relevant to all the kooks in the video who almost unanimously compared Bush to Hitler.

TARP and increased spending notwithstanding, it’s hard to label Bush as a socialist. And even the fascist label is ridiculous. The hallmarks of fascism — authoritarian dictatorship, extreme censorship, jailing and execution of political opponents, and overwhelming single party rule — were not present with Bush in the slightest. Bush took no action whatsoever to prevent public dissent or establish himself as dictator for life.

I think the quote Chip gave is informative in that it shows Hitler was not overly-concerned about seizing the means of production, the classical definition of socialism everyone always points to when when disparaging the Tea Party for calling Obama a socialist. Hitler was only concerned about putting himself ultimately in charge. This concept or distinction certainly has some parallels to the discussion of whether ObamaCare is a “government takeover” of the health industry. Sure, the Dems dropped the public option and aren’t going straight to single-payer, but when they create the exchanges and then mandate that everyone in individual market must buy through the exchanges, and then put a bureaucrat in charge of determining who and what insurance companies must cover, all while creating comparative effectiveness boards to lay the groundwork for what WON’T be covered in the near future, that sure moves much too far towards a command-and-control health system. It may not be government-run, but it sure is government control.

This is how the Left’s stupid game is supposed to be played: Like clockwork They spew the accusation that we are all Racists (or some variation thereof) and Republicans and others on the right are supposed to immediately assume a fetal position in the corner, begging that they aren’t racists and to please just stop saying it.

And just like clockwork the Leftist throw out the Nazi accusation ( or some variation thereof) and again the Republicans and others on the right are supposed to immediately assume a fetal position and again beg forgiveness.

Well lets examine those accusations – which party promoted a candidate “way above his pay grade” based mainly on certain physical characteristics?

And which National party is embracing the tenets of Socialism?
