Quotes of the day

posted at 10:50 pm on March 31, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Credit Obama with pulling off a small political coup – one you could even call triangulation lite.

“The price he paid in political terms was relatively small: Angry blowback from environmental activists who still support his overall climate change policy.

“But the short-term benefits were large: By announcing the policy change, Obama defused a potentially potent Republican issue ahead of the summer gas spike and the fall midterms, while embracing major elements of the GOP’s ‘all of the above’ energy approach to kick-start a stalled climate change bill…

“‘It’s not a bad thing to show you’re willing to do something that gets liberals angry right after you pass the biggest liberal bill in a generation,’ said a Senate Democrat staffer, whose boss opposes the policy.”

***
“Many Americans fear that President Obama’s new energy proposal is once again ‘all talk and no real action,’ this time in an effort to shore up fading support for the Democrats’ job-killing cap-and-trade (a.k.a. cap-and-tax) proposals. Behind the rhetoric lie new drilling bans and leasing delays; soon to follow are burdensome new environmental regulations. Instead of ‘drill, baby, drill,’ the more you look into this the more you realize it’s ‘stall, baby, stall.’

“As an Alaskan, I’m especially disheartened by the new ban on drilling in parts of the 49th state and the cancellation of lease sales in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. These areas contain rich oil and gas reserves whose development is key to our country’s energy security. As I told Secretary Salazar last April, ‘Arctic exploration and development is a slow, demanding process. Delays or major restrictions in accessing these resources for environmentally responsible development are not in the national interest or the interests of the State of Alaska.’

“I’ve got to call it like I see it: The administration’s sudden interest in offshore drilling is little more than political posturing designed to gain support for job-killing energy legislation soon to come down the pike. I’m confident that GOP senators will not take the bait.”

The thing is, everyone knows the President is lying. Nobody believes that he really wants to increase drilling and bring nuclear power online. America knows his game, and we’re not buying it.

Whatever PR boost Obama hoped for via the relaxation of the Atlantic drilling restrictions he’s going to lose with the new Alaska bans, while at the same time it’s not enough of a sop to the environmentalists to keep them from being ticked off over the new drilling areas on the East Coast. Pretty dumb bit of straregerie on Barack and/or Salazar’s part.

It promises to begin thinking about the prospects of one day considering to contemplate the possibility of humoring the hypothetical concept of examining the option to study the feasibility of the ramifications of delving into the theoretical realm of critically scrutinizing the plausibility and probabilities of inspecting the capabilities and potentiality of the practicability of allowing an oil company to one day apply for a lease.

Obama offshore plan day late, dollar short

Last we checked, Virginia wasn’t exactly considered a drilling hotspot. Alaska is arguably more prospective but it isn’t cheap. Still it’s nice to see an American president — and a Democrat at that — take a responsible look at his country’s energy future.

hillbillyjim on March 31, 2010 at 11:24 PM

As mentioned on PowerLine:

When you cut through the hoopla, here is what Obama’s announcement added up to:

* Canceled five lease sales off the Alaska coast that were planned over the next 2 years. One of the areas is estimated to hold up to 77 billion barrels of oil, or more than 3 times US reserves.

* A study of the southern Atlantic OCS, with the findings due back next year….no leasing.

* Delayed a planned lease sale off Virginia until at least 2012.

Yeah, Barry’s gonna “drill”…….someday.

TXMomof3 on March 31, 2010 at 11:25 PM

From Mike Pence on Michelle Malkin’s site:

“As usual the devil is in the details. Only in Washington, D.C., can you ban more areas to oil and gas exploration than you open up, delay the date of your new leases and claim you’re going to increase production.

“The President’s announcement today is a smokescreen. It will almost certainly delay any new offshore exploration until at least 2012 and include only a fraction of the offshore resources that the previous Administration included in its plan.

“Unfortunately, this is yet another feeble attempt to gain votes for the President’s national energy tax bill that is languishing in the Senate. At the end of the day this Administration’s energy plan is simple: increase the cost of energy on every family in America and trade American jobs oversees at a time when millions of Americans are looking for work.”

technopeasant on March 31, 2010 at 11:15 PM

I don’t think even Alinsky tactics are required, except maybe ridicule (which won’t be hard, given the ridiculous situation). I think it’ll just require speaking the truth with no fear of MoDo’s and Politico’s and MSNBC’s hard opinions. And yeah, of those mentioned Palin’s the one to do it.

ddrintn on March 31, 2010 at 11:26 PM

All pluses for Sarah. Regardless of what she decides to do with her own political career, she is performing an invaluable service by being willing and able to speak the truth. Too many of the Republican “leaders” are wimps, reluctant to tell it like it is, and content with their positions, sort of like McCain and Graham.

GaltBlvnAtty on March 31, 2010 at 11:26 PM

Yep. You guessed it. Mining permits; either delayed or denied — either way costing the companies millions, enriching the lawyers, and starving my neighbors.

I won’t believe a word about Ojesus supporting drilling anywhere until the oil is flowing…there are a million and one regulations on his side, and he’s shown no hesitation in using them to further the leftist agenda, even when it hits the ones he claims to champion (the poor people, and that’s most everybody ’round here).

It’s not slavish devotion, Palin-hater.

It’s called political support, you drooling maroon.
I felt the exact same way about Ronald Reagan in 1980, so bl*w me.
The minute she does something I don’t like, HA posters will probably hear about it first.
I’m not crazy about her endorsement of either McCain or Rand Paul, but is she is right about the other 98% of the issues?
Oh, yes.

If we found the largest oil and gas reserve in the world and if everything was giving a green light in the next 24 hours, we couldn’t be bringing anything up for years. How long does it take to just build the rigs, find a suitable anchorage, and all else that goes into undersea drilling?

This is a dog biscuit to the Pubs, with more outs for Obow than there are barrels of oil in all the reserves he said may be ‘explored’. Just one court case can shut down the entire proposition and Obow knows it; he can come out smelling like a rose.

Lead us o ye mighty Conservatives. Now Paul Ryan, now Demint and Pence, on Boehner, on Bachmann, on Palin and Rubio!

El_Terrible on March 31, 2010 at 11:41 PM

As President Clinton said, more than a decade ago; why drill now, because it could take 10 years for oil to start flowing?

Calling me names doesn’t change your cultish behavior about her. the same points you make about Obamabots could be made about Palinista behavior. You just don’t see it.
Palin never was and never will be the next Reagan no matter how many times you click your heels together and wish it so.

I’ve heard anywhere from 10 to 15 years to anchor and build before the whole rig is up and running.

It’s ok Bradky. Slavish devotion to democrats is honorable, just, and right. Democrats have slavish devotions to the people. The people need to be freed from their wants and needs and democrats can make that happen. Look at Detroit. There is nothing left. Democrats are the best at making these utopian situations happen. This is how democrats bring the people into perfect harmony with nature. If that Georgian democrat had not warned about over populating The great island state of Guam, it would have turned over in the ocean.

Whoever gave the control of developing and extracting our natural resources to government bureaucrats sure were progressive thinkers.

It can be done in less than a year. The problem they will have is pipelines. That will take a little longer. We drill a well and put it online in a matter of months. They are within a pretty close proximity to existing pipelines, though. The estimates are way overblown.
