I think most people agree that this is a smokescreen and total BS. Here's a question for the financial guru types who frequent Hot Air: In the short term, does a mostly empty gesture like this still have enough power or "authority" to depress the global price of oil enough to keep gas prices low enough (say, under $3.00 a gallon) through the rest of the year to maybe save a few Dem congressional seats in November?

I'm just looking for the motivation from a different angle.

This thread deserves top billing. Thank goodness, not many Republican senators are taken in by this ruse. I hope that they can influence those on the Energy Committee (and hide Lindsey Graham somewhere during the vote.)

From "The Corner" (Costa):

Sen. Bob Bennett (R., Utah), a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, tells National Review Online that President Obama’s proposal to open areas of the American coastline to oil and natural gas exploration is “more of this administration talking a good fight about moving toward domestic sources of energy.” Yet when “you get into the details,” he says, “they’re clearly moving as strongly as they can in the opposite direction.”

While the administration may act like it is moving to the political center on energy, Bennett says that “tucked away in the language of its policy are countless actions that make it all the more difficult” for exploration. “Just look at what’s happening in Utah,” he says. “I’m trying to push Secretary Salazar in our direction. He keeps telling us that the administration is interested in natural gas, yet there is always some regulatory or legal hang-up that’s cited to keep anything from moving forward. They’re not serious about this. They want to implement onerous regulations. Same goes for coastal exploration.”

Bennett adds that energy will be a key issue in many states come November, and that “the marketplace, the ability of companies to explore,” will be how success in this sector is measured by voters. “[President Obama] is not going to get away

(I accidentally cut off the remained of the remark.)

[...] Ed Morrissey: Obama could see this concession to conservative and industry pressure as a means to have them relax their opposition to cap-and-trade. However, that bill will have devastating effects on the energy sector, and trading off for domestic resources isn’t going to be a good deal for them in any case. The effort to produce that raw material will cost billions, and if Obama and Congress impose a cap-and-trade system on energy production, it will be a money loser for them in the long run. In fact, cap-and-trade is specifically designed to make carbon-based energy production a red-ink affair in order to force industry towards so-called “green” energy alternatives, even if those alternatives can’t possibly keep up with our energy needs.
This is a ruse to put through Cap and Tax. I was for offshore drilling until last week, when I read about the Bakken Field in N. Dakota. Supposedly has enough oil to suit our energy needs for something like two thousand years at current levels. Has two hundred times what Saudi Arabia had to start with. Estimates are that if we tapped into it, oil would be going for $16 a barrel and we would be EXPORTERS!!!!!

Of course if American energy companies can make profit, the pain at the pump would ease for Americans, Commie Obammie wants nothing to do with it to ruin his plans for the One World Government Brave New World. Can't kill his commie plans ya know. He's been plotting the downfall of America since he was knee-high to a grasshopper at Frank Davis'(Communist Mentor as a youth)feet.
From MMs site this is what Mike Pence had to say about this.

“As usual the devil is in the details. Only in Washington, D.C., can you ban more areas to oil and gas exploration than you open up, delay the date of your new leases and claim you’re going to increase production.

“The President’s announcement today is a smokescreen. It will almost certainly delay any new offshore exploration until at least 2012 and include only a fraction of the offshore resources that the previous Administration included in its plan.

“Unfortunately, this is yet another feeble attempt to gain votes for the President’s national energy tax bill that is languishing in the Senate. At the end of the day this Administration’s energy plan is simple: increase the cost of energy on every family in America and trade American jobs oversees at a time when millions of Americans are looking for work.”

Obama is just so confusing. If I remember correctly Bush signed an order to drop that moratorium back in 2008, and then when Obama became president, he rescinded that order. Or so I though. I do remember Pelosi refusing to allow Congress to go along with Bush's order. She said she just wanted to save the planet. So, will the Democrats in Congress go along with this order since it comes from another Democrat?

Wasn't Obama on Pelosi's side back then?

What an incredibly lame attempt to “triangulate” by the Messiah.

Obama is simply trying to pull a Clinton "in name only" by appearing to go to the center "in words only".

I guess he's trying to trick the folks (and he will), but I still have some hope(tm) that 2010 will be like 1994. Obama won't really go to the center though. I'm just waiting for the impending implosion when all of his lies and triple-talk comes to a head.

Also from the article(emphasis mine):

But many Republicans criticized Obama's initiative as a half-hearted measure. House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.) called the move "a smokescreen," adding that "only in Washington, D.C., can you ban more areas to oil and gas exploration than you open up, delay the date of your new leases and claim you're going to increase production."
