We must deploy troops to patrol the border, says … John McCain

posted at 8:40 pm on March 30, 2010 by Allahpundit

I came thisclose to headlining the post “comedy gold.” What miracles hath this Hayworth primary challenge wrought!

From the man who once famously groused about conservatives’ desire to build a “goddamned fence” and then denied voting for it when pressed by Univision during the campaign, I give you John McCain — border warrior:

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), under fire from the right for not being tough enough on immigration in his Senate primary race, has called on Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to dispatch National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border…

In the letter, McCain says he has supported sending troops to the border in the past.

“Unfortunately that request was rejected by this Administration,” he writes. “A year later, in light of the recent incidents and the continued growth of drug violence along the border, I am asking you and the Administration to immediately reconsider your position and send National Guard troops to our southern border region.”

“All the language he’s using is red meat for conservatives,” said Gabe Gonzalez, a national director at the Center For Community Change. “He’s getting attacks on the right, so he’s going right.”

You think? It turned out, of course, that McCain’s preferred virtual fence didn’t work, so I guess this is his attempt to stay on offense by using that horrible murder of an Arizona rancher as a way to tack right on the issue. There’s some disdain among our commenters for Hayworth too given, among other things, his previous flirtation with Birtherism, so this seems like a fine time for a reader poll. New and (temporarily) improved right-wing McCain! Good enough for reelection?

OMG – Someone pinch me I am having a nightmare……how long must we hold our noses Can J.D. Hayworth beat the Democrat challenger? Because the Republicans need to pick up 10 seats in the Senate to take back the majority….this feels just like that Bill Murray movie Ground Hog Day, and we all have to keep deciding if we will vote for John McCain, till we learn our lesson….quick someone please what’s the Lesson!

Dr Evil on March 30, 2010 at 8:48 PM

AP, I normally agree with you, even when you’re ticking off the majority of HA-heads…but “comedy gold”?

These accusations against McCain are totally unfair.

McCain knows something has to be done. No one knew what the virtual fence would do. Or anything else. At least the Mav is on top of the issue. And to blast him now for calling for the National Guard on the border is a bit ingenuous.

As for the Hayworth vs. McCain poll….no surprise the clown birfer nut Hayworth is ahead. Amazing…McCain-derangement still running rampant. I don’t know if it makes me sad, or angry.

Both, probably.

JetBoy on March 30, 2010 at 8:49 PM

Another US Citizen dead, Phoenix is the kidnap capital of the world behind Mexico City, more people have been killed in Mexico in one year than US Troops in the combined Iraq and Afghanistan wars together, there is a civil war going on just to the south of us, and only now McCain and Grahamnesty address the problem…

If millions of people hadn’t risen up over the last year, and the winds shifted, and Mac having a serious primary challenger, does anyone honestly think we would have been hearing this and other tough talk the last few months?

You fumbled the ’08 campaign so badly that only Sarah Palin kept it from falling apart like a wet soda cracker. And just now you ‘ask’ for her support when she can’t refuse, because you need a political crutch that badly.

Nobody with an IQ higher than a housecat thinks of you as anything more than a RINO, or at best as a ‘hold my nose’ alternative to whatever libtard loon is running against you.

(and as a side note…instead of guarding our nation, much of the NG is overseas chasing shadows of WMD, Bin Laden, etc, so the discussion is academic for the time being.)

“If you build a 50′ fence, they’ll find a 51′ ladder”

Solution: Snipers

Its really saddening to realize that back in the days of stick, stones, and boiling oil, soveriegn property was better defended than we are now.

Moats, strategically shaped defensive walls to give maximum firing angles (with no place for the attacker to hide), earthworks (to tire the enemy long before he to your stockade or castle walls.

Today, we try to repel boarders with invisible fences. Works great on dogs. Not sure the denizens south of the border would appreciate the collar, though.
