Quotes of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on March 30, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Of the two great societal goals—freedom and ‘the good’—freedom requires a conservatism, a discipline of principles over the good, limited government, and so on. No way to grandiosity here. But today’s liberalism is focused on ‘the good’ more than on freedom. And ideas of ‘the good’ are often a license to transgress democratic principles in order to reach social justice or to achieve more equality or to lessen suffering. The great political advantage of modern liberalism is its offer of license on the one hand and moral innocence—if not superiority—on the other. Liberalism lets you force people to buy health insurance and feel morally superior as you do it. Power and innocence at the same time…

“There has always been a narcissistic charge around Mr. Obama, the sense that in embracing him one was embracing something special in oneself—and possibly even a larger idea of human perfectibility. Every politician wants this capacity to attract identification. But it is also a trap. What happens when people are embarrassed for having seen themselves in you?”

I had a conversation with a liberal at work today and she said that she thinks socialism would be great. I asked her why and she just said she “felt” that it would. She also said that our medical system should be like England and Canada. I asked her if she had ever lived under in a country with socialism and/or ever experienced socialized medicine and of course she said no. I then asked her again why she thought socialism is good. She repeated that she just had a feeling that it would be a better system than capitalism.

I have a feeling that we’re screwed.

Angels and demons

After drinking a potion of Saul Alinsky’s, Jeremiah Wright’s, Rahm Emanuel’s, David Axelrod’s, Bill Ayers’, Adolf Hitler’s, King George III, King Louis XVI and his own creation, Barack is transformed into the cruel, remorseless, pathological, misanthropic, pyromaniac Herr Hussein, representing the hidden side of Obama’s dual nature brought to the fore. Barack has many friends and has a pleasing personality, but as Herr Hussein he becomes more and more dictatorial, more and more scape goating, makes ever longer enemies lists, encourages demonization or political opponents and becomes ever more fascist like as time goes by as Herr Hussein grows in dominance. After taking this potion repetitively, he no longer needs to rely upon it to unleash his inner fascist demons.

What bunk: “the good” is not a constitutional term.

GaltBlvnAtty on March 30, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Shelby Steele is echoing Thomas Sowell:

In his classic 1987 work, A Conflict of Visions, Sowell identifies two competing worldviews, or visions, that have underlain the Western political tradition for centuries.

Sowell calls one worldview the “constrained vision.” It sees human nature as flawed or fallen, seeking to make the best of the possibilities that exist within that constraint. The competing worldview, which Sowell terms the “unconstrained vision,” instead sees human nature as capable of continual improvement….

The American Revolution embodied the constrained vision. “In the United States,” Sowell says, “it was assumed from the outset that what you needed to do above all was minimize [the damage that could be done by] the flaws in human nature.” The founders did so by composing a constitution of checks and balances. More than two centuries later, their work remains in place.

The French Revolution, by contrast, embodied the unconstrained vision. “In France,” Sowell says, “the idea was that if you put the right people in charge–if you had a political Messiah–then problems would just go away.”

Those utopians who believe in the unconstrained vision always seem to be responsible for the worst atrocities of history.

Why is National Socialist Left suddenly concerned about free speech?

Why weren’t they concerned about it during the 8 years of Bush.

Why didn’t anyone demand the wackos attacking Bush dial it back during the Bush years?

IMO, the elite media elected BHO and they will fight to protect their investment. This whole episode has been so transparent. Did the CBC and Nancy need to walk through the Tea Party to get to the Capitol?
BHO is no fool, a marxist, but not a fool. His arrogance comes from his life history sort of a defense mechanism for the problems he faced as a child of two different worlds but did not fit in either of them. As an adult he cannot believe a majority of Americans do not agree with him on policy. They must hate him because of his race, place of birth or some other reason his narcissistic mind allows him to embrace. He has no real experiences to fall back on. We are in for rough ride with this combination of POTUS and elite media.

thomasaur on March 30, 2010 at 10:56 PM

Oh, but this isn’t an ‘incitement’?

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama stepped carefully when talking for the first time about the conservative tea party movement, acknowledging it has legitimate concerns about federal reach and spending, but he contended the core of the loose anti-government network is “on the fringe.”

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100331/ap_on_el_pr/us_obama_tea_party

All the lefty pundits made accusations but gave no specifics, no names. How many arrests have there been?

I know of only one, and it was for some fringe type shooting out the window of a Republican’s office.

Liam on March 30, 2010 at 10:58 PM

Obama is a narcissistic psychopath but his speaking techniques are clever. In a one hour debate he’ll dominate 59:45 of it and any riposte is met with a curt “don’t interrupt” accompanied by a sardonic (‘you effing a-hole’) smirk.Further attempts to stop the incessant, tedious drone of his baffle-gab are met with stern reminders that you are “dissing”the office of the presidency. If all else fails, the race card is held up his sleeve as a last resort.

MaiDee on March 30, 2010 at 10:59 PM

Such individuals who lack ulterior motive have traditionally been referred to in layman’s terms simply as a variation of a pyromaniac. Most such maniacs lack conscious motivation although they are fully aware of the acts they are failing to stop or they themselves are committing. Typically they will feel intense pleasure, gratification, or relief when causing destruction or when witnessing or participating in the aftermath. Motivation is also classified as pathological and non-pathological. Some research suggests that feeling such joy at horrific situation is pathological. Other research suggests that some motivation for this comes from rational thought. Taking joy in horrific situations for envisioned gains in political power and/or the concealment of the imposition of devious plans are examples of supposed rational decision making.

the enemy is the MSM?

the real enemy is that the Left and Right are appealing to very different standards to unite the many.
Problem for us is that the Left controls the culture and all the assumptions with it pretty much, control the MSM and HOllywood and Academia.

So it can get coverage on the alphabet networks and Rubes across the country will think that he has some intentions of doing something. When the story isn’t in the news they aren’t paying attention. This obsession of ours isn’t widespread.

thomasaur on March 30, 2010 at 11:21 PM

Maybe, but that would make no sense politically. He’d tick off the environmentalist wackos on the left for merely proposing it, and then anger the right for failing to follow through. That’s a dumb move.

It could also be because gas is creeping up to 3 bucks a gallon.

That video is pretty powerful. It would take weapon’s grade denial to shrug it off. What’s scary is there are a lot of people who get their information only from those sources.

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.
A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

but he contended the core of the loose anti-government network is “on the fringe.”

Here is the twist that shapes the media/Obamao/Leftist narrative: “anti-government network.” Taxpaying, Constitution-loving, law-abiding Americans are NOT anti-government. They do object to a government that sets itself above the citizens. They insist that government derives its power from the consent of the citizens, no more and no less. When the government oversteps its Constitutionally limited boundaries, then the citizens have a right and duty to demand representation and the right and dury to demand redress of grievances.

Enthusiastic yet peaceful gatherings of TEA party protesters are American demonstrations of righteous objections as part of our birthright.

I had a conversation with a liberal at work today and she said that she thinks socialism would be great. She repeated that she just had a feeling that it would be a better system than capitalism.

I have a feeling that we’re screwed.

txag92 on March 30, 2010 at 10:44 PM

I’ve posted this before and always use this example for anyone that thinks socialism is a great idea.

An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had never failed a single student, but had once failed an entire class.

The students in the class insisted that socialism worked since no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism.”

“All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.”

After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who had studied hard were upset while the students who had studied very little were happy.

But, as the second test rolled around, the students who had studied little studied even less and the ones who had studied hard decided that since they couldn’t make an A, they also studied less. The second Test average was a D. No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around the average grade was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame, name calling, all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for anyone else.

To their great surprise all failed. The professor told them that socialism would ultimately fail because the harder people try to succeed the greater their reward (capitalism)but when a government takes all the reward away (socialism) no one will try or succeed.

Or you could always go for the visual:

It solves 2 problems for Hussain

1. Takes the wind out of the “drill baby drill ” movement
2. Makes repubs want to support amnesty

Ofcourse since this will shock oil prices and harm the muslim world while actually helping our country, Hussain will never let it happen ! But he’ll dangle that carrot for whatever its worth
