Quotes of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on March 30, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Of the two great societal goals—freedom and ‘the good’—freedom requires a conservatism, a discipline of principles over the good, limited government, and so on. No way to grandiosity here. But today’s liberalism is focused on ‘the good’ more than on freedom. And ideas of ‘the good’ are often a license to transgress democratic principles in order to reach social justice or to achieve more equality or to lessen suffering. The great political advantage of modern liberalism is its offer of license on the one hand and moral innocence—if not superiority—on the other. Liberalism lets you force people to buy health insurance and feel morally superior as you do it. Power and innocence at the same time…

“There has always been a narcissistic charge around Mr. Obama, the sense that in embracing him one was embracing something special in oneself—and possibly even a larger idea of human perfectibility. Every politician wants this capacity to attract identification. But it is also a trap. What happens when people are embarrassed for having seen themselves in you?”

He is of course a malevolent narcissist. He is also a cold, cruel person. He does not make policy decisions. He makes decisions to enforce his delusional will and ego and is petulant if crossed.

He does not learn at all. Instead of triangulation, he favors strangulation.

Drilling offshore? ObaMao is pulling a PR move to distract the populace from its unhappiness over creeping gasoline prices and disgust over O-care, outflank Palin (She is in his head.), and play Lucy football with Republicans to extort another concession, probably on “carbon emissions.” His EPA will thwart every move to go ahead with drilling plans, and he will come out smelling like a rose with an “I tried, but my hands were tied.

Energy production will be ObaMao’s next fascistic takeover. Mark my words.

The Left in America needs to grow a skin, not a membrane. They are more thin-skinned than jihadists at this point.

As for Obama’s speech at Bagram: it should have ended after 6 minutes… as a retired federal employee I can tell you that after 6 mins the brain just shuts down unless you are one of the most engaging speakers on the planet. Obama is not that while in campaign mode, and every promise he makes has an expiration date and I doubt that has been missed by the troopers there. As he went on I just shook my head and had to shut it off after listening to the 10 minutes max that any presentation should last.

Make your few points about the mission.

Thank everyone.

Thank the troops personally.

Stick around and take a tour of operations. Having Michelle there does not count in those things for the CinC. A six-hour fly-through is ok if you’ve been there 3-4 times for much longer stays, commitment is in having been there for those stays and learning what is going on. You don’t have to lead from the front, but there is no front in this war, thus leadership is in commanding by understanding and walking around. You can’t do that from DC. And once you respect the troops, you don’t waste their time campaigning in front of them as they have a life and death job to do and you are taking up precious time for them to do it.

And I’m damned worried about those ‘promises’.

Never over estimate the intelligence of the average liberal. Obama supporters will never be embarrassed by anything he does because they are just as narcissistic as he is.

I was playing with an Obamabot work friend the other day. A few months ago I asked her why she hated GWB so much. I asked her to name one thing he did to deserve her hatred. She said the Patriot act. I asked her the other day if she remembered what she told me and she said she didn’t. So I asked her again why she hated GWB. She couldn’t come with anything so I reminded her and then asked her if she now hated Barack Obama for renewing it. Oh, no, of course not.

Then she said, get this, that Bush put the country into debt and that was unforgiveable.

When I told her that Obama was spending like George W. Bush on meth you know what she said?

“He’s spending on the right things and I am so proud I voted for him.”

You represent a human first, something entirely new under the sun. There aren’t even any myths that speak directly to your circumstance, no allegorical tales of ancient black kings who ruled over white kingdoms.

UNPRECIDENTED!

Disturb the Universe on March 31, 2010 at 8:26 AM

If anything, you may literally experience yourself as a myth in the making. After all, you embody a heretofore unimaginable transcendence over the old human plagues of tribalism, hatred and ignorance. Standing on ground that no man has stood on before, wouldn’t it be understandable if you felt pressured by the grandiosity of your circumstance? Isn’t there a special—and impossible—burden on “the first” to do something that lives up to his historical originality?

So epic. So full of pathos. If only Shakespeare were alive to write the tale.

Disturb the Universe on March 31, 2010 at 8:34 AM

Mr. Obama’s success has always been ephemeral because it was based on an illusion: that if we Americans could transcend race enough to elect a black president, we could transcend all manner of human banalities and be on our way to human perfectibility. A black president would put us in a higher human territory. And yet the poor man we elected to play out this fantasy is now torturing us with his need to reflect our grandiosity back to us.

A nation of Scientologists for voters.

The ironic and sad thing about Obama and his minions trying to brand his critics as racists is that corruption and incompetence are color blind. As Mark Levin and other commentators state so clearly, the democrats need to get past this obsession with genitalia, skin color, and quotas and recognize and reward people because of their competence and qualifications. Right now, the democrat party is all about image and make believe.

mozalf on March 31, 2010 at 8:48 AM

So, O.K., I realize it’s a tired-tread to some, but, and again, Obama’s like Hitler.

Hitler said about himself that he was “sleepwalking through life” == that some sort of destiny unfolded around him but that he was like a sleeper just existing in his life while all these big, ‘great’ things occured associated with him, by him, whatever (argh…, not an endorsement from me).

Obama’s got that same disrespectful disconnect thing going that Hitler had. They both engage in this same sort of “loose” thing that is the arrogance or irresponsibility (or both) of psychos: acting without conscience and without regard for harms they inflict, because their objectives are “destined” by some sort of big deal (and that, thus, therefore, they are big deals though they remain “cool behind the wheel”).

Every time I read and hear of Obama’s ongoing denigrations of others by way of his casual-too-cool demeanor, I think of that Hitler quote and how it was that Hitler maintained his merriness over tea daily.

WASHINGTON (AP) – In a reversal of a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling, President Barack Obama is allowing oil drilling 50 miles off Virginia’s shorelines. At the same time, he is rejecting some new drilling sites that had been planned in Alaska.

Wonder if this had anything to do with a Republican winning the Governor’s race in Virginia by 18 points? But you can’t let Caribou Barbie “Drill, Baby, Drill”, even though the caribou like the green grass by the oil pipelines, which melt the snow earlier in the season!

The president, joined by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, also was set to announce that proposed leases in Alaska’s Bristol Bay would be canceled. The Interior Department also planned to reverse last year’s decision to open up parts of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. Instead, scientists would study the sites to see if they’re suitable to future leases.

Obama is allowing an expansion in Alaska’s Cook Inlet to go forward. The plan also would leave in place the moratorium on drilling off the West Coast.

In addition, the Interior Department has prepared a plan to add drilling platforms in the eastern Gulf of Mexico if Congress allows that moratorium to expire. Lawmakers in 2008 allowed a similar moratorium to expire; at the time President George W. Bush lifted the ban, which opened the door to Obama’s change in policy.

Under Obama’s plan, drilling could take place 125 miles from Florida’s Gulf coastline if lawmakers allow the moratorium to expire. Drilling already takes place in western and central areas in the Gulf of Mexico.

Maybe Floridians wanted a piece of the action in the undersea oil business. Better them than the Chinese!

Obama also urged Congress to complete work on a climate change and energy bill, which has remained elusive. The president met with lawmakers earlier this month at the White House about a bill cutting emissions of pollution-causing greenhouse gases by 17 percent by 2020. The legislation would also expand domestic oil and gas drilling offshore and provide federal assistance for constructing nuclear power plants and carbon sequestration and storage projects at coal-fired utilities.

White House officials hope Wednesday’s announcement will attract support from Republicans, who adopted a chant of “Drill, baby, drill” during 2008′s presidential campaign.

Republicans have to avoid being suckered into voting for Cap and Trade or carbon sequestration. They need to make sure that two separate energy bills are voted in Congress–one dealing with oil drilling and/or nuclear energy, the other on Cap and Trade and CO2, which has to stand on its own (de)merits WITHOUT sweetening the pot with drilling.

Offshore drilling and nuclear energy would both reduce imports of foreign fuel and create jobs for Americans, while Cap and Trade would destroy our economy and lose American jobs overseas.

Carbon sequestration (compressing carbon dioxide and burying it underground under pressure) is extremely expensive and may actually be DANGEROUS. Carbon dioxide cannot be liquefied above 81 F (which is normally exceeded underground), so it must be compressed above 1100 psi for underground storage. Large amounts of compressed gas forced underground could actually cause MAN-MADE EARTHQUAKES–which would be much more dangerous than “global warming”!
