Netanyahu: The building in east Jerusalem will continue

posted at 7:36 pm on March 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

Sounds like that middle finger from The One at the White House earlier this week didn’t have the desired effect. Go figure.

Late Friday evening, Israel Radio reported that Netanyahu holds to the view that Israel must not change its policy in Jerusalem, despite the fact that this was the main point of contentions between Israel and the United States.

However the circle of seven top ministers, known collectively as the ‘Septet’, did not come to any conclusions following the five-hour discussion and will probably only announce the government’s position after the Passover Seder which occurs Monday evening.

That’s not the only disappointment he has in store for Obama, assuming Haaretz’s reporting is accurate:

In closed talks, Netanyahu clarified that he has no intention of breaking up his rightwing coalition to form a more moderate centrist alliance, despite continuing pressure from the United States for a compromise over Israeli building in east Jerusalem.

“I do not need coalition partners to pressure me into continuing to build in Jerusalem,” he said. “I, myself, plan to continue building in Jerusalem as all previous prime ministers did before me.”

We’re dealing with boutique issues involving a foreign country here, but does everyone grasp how stupid it is to make building in Jerusalem some sort of linchpin condition to peace talks? As Netanyahu notes, it was never a controversial issue before; in fact, read this post at Commentary quoting an exchange Obama envoy George Mitchell had with Charlie Rose just two months ago in which Mitchell all but shrugged at the idea of Israelis building there. Quote: “It’s what they regard as their country. They don’t say they’re letting us go ahead when we build in Manhattan.” But now, because of the diplomatic affront to building there during Biden’s visit, Obama’s prepared to make this some sort of cornerstone concession in the interest of saving face — which, ironically, will only make him lose more face as Netanyahu is forced to defy him. (The Israelis are hoping some token concessions, like releasing Palestinian prisoners, in lieu of a settlement freeze might be enough to smooth things over.) No wonder he’s holding onto his right-wing coalition, too, despite the White House’s hopes for something more centrist: According to a new poll conducted by the JPost, 48 percent of Israelis think Obama favors the Palestinians over Israel. Just 30 percent think he’s neutral and a cool nine percent think he’s pro-Israeli. Sounds like the makings of concessions from a right-wing government to me!

To the great surprise of no one, Iran has now seized on this spat and is propagandizing the hell out of it, turning the non-issue of Jerusalem settlements into a very big issue indeed, which will make it that much harder to reach a peace agreement. But then, who could have seen that coming, except everyone? Exit question: Is Noah Pollak right? Netanyahu can’t cave to Obama without looking dangerously weak but alienating the U.S. will leave Israel dangerously isolated, so he may feel obliged to do something desperate. Good work, smart power.

It was Syria, where Nazi Pulloutsi had a hot date with Baby Assad. The Lefties spend a lot of time courting him.

As I understand the East Jerusalem construction issue, this wasn’t even on the Pali’s radar until the “Smart Power” Krew put it on the table as a pre-condition. ObaMao, Clinton, Biden, etc. found just another way to rile up the always disgruntled Palis, who have no intention of meeting with the Israelis anyway much less reaching a peaceful resolution.

Bibi is admirable for continuing the precedent that was the agreement of several past administrations. Bibi doesn’t have to justify what is in his country’s national interests to satisfy a ideologically driven Chicago punk.

The Newspeak is coming in hot and heavy. A “centrist” now means one for only surrendering half of the Jewish nation in exchange for a promise of eternal friendship from the serial liar currently occupying the USA’s Whitehouse. The bone of contention since 1948 has never been the West Bank. The sole issue will always remain either a Jewish ruled Jerusalem or an international “World Government” ruled Jerusalem. Take a side soon before it’s too late.

Mind-boggling how quickly the Jerusalem housing project sent the stars into re-alignment over Israel to shine down now on a new, official US vision of the Jewish state as an drag on US interests in the world, even to the point of endangering the lives of our troops.

That was the message the Vice President delivered in Israel this month (“What you’re doing here undermines the security of our troops …”) according to Israeli media. The White House denied it.

That was the feeling the President conveyed in treating visiting Israeli president Benjamin Netanyahu like an international leper this week (no pictures, no press, no statements, no nothing).

And very sensationally, that was the narrative Centcom Commander Gen. David Petraeus put in writing to the US Senate (sending hero-worshipping conservatives into denial) as noted in last week’s column. Disregarding the impetus of 14 centuries of Muslims’ doctrinally-driven aggression on non-Muslims, Petraeus advanced a line that echoed the Arab League’s: namely, that “Arab anger over the Palestinian question” drives violence throughout the Centcom region, which includes Iraq and Afghanistan, and enhances the powers of Iran and Al Qaeda.

One prominent conservative commentator who strongly supported the Bush-Petraeus policy in Iraq expressed his shock to me in an email: “I would think that Jewish leaders would be appalled by Petraeus’s statement ( `The Jew’s are protecting their property with the blood from the bodies of our dead young men’ !!!) It is about 95% the way to the `blood libel’.

Hey Obama. Listen up.

This is Benjamin Netanyahu you’re pockin’ with.

He leads a country that is surrounded by, literally, armed and dangerous enemies for 100 miles in any given direction.

He leads a country that has been subject to attacks that, were it “rogue” Germans lobbing bombs across French borders, France, the French would have surrendered by now.

(and were it “disaffected” Canadians or Mexicans lobbing bombs across the U.S. borders, we’d have taken over their countries by now…)

He leads a country that has been living under threat of genocide – not subjugation but all-out obliteration – since it became a country. He is of a people that have been victims of genocide attempts for centuries.

And Obama thinks, because “talking” has worked so well for him so far, that a snub like making some stupid demands and then leaving for an hour will work. A snub, like denying a photo op, will persuade.

Poor Obama. So far outclassed that he doesn’t even realize just how extreme the differences are.

If it weren’t quite so serious, I think I’d laugh myself silly.

We need to not forget that the upper positions in any organization are inherently political, whether we’re talking about a business like HP or McDonalds, a charity like the Red Cross or Habitat for Humanity, or the Pentagon.

The problem for us civilians is twofold – first, we like to forget that Colin Powell and David Petraeus are politicians of a sort; and second, we are unable to get a good feel for which way military politicians lean.

Just a thought or two.

Here is the Petraeus Senate testimony and it is very clear.

“The enduring hostilities between Israel and some of its neighbors present distinct challenges to our ability to advance our interests in the AOR. Israeli-Palestinian tensions often flare into violence and large-scale armed confrontations. The conflict foments anti-American sentiment, due to a perception of U.S. favoritism for Israel. Arab anger over the Palestinian question limits the strength and depth of U.S. partnerships with governments and peoples in the AOR and weakens the legitimacy of moderate regimes in the Arab world. Meanwhile, al-Qaeda and other militant groups exploit that anger to mobilize support. The conflict also gives Iran influence in the Arab world through its clients, Lebanese Hizballah and Hamas.”

Jumping jackrabbits, what a disgusting way for nations to act – like a couple of spoiled children. The leaders of the USA and Israel are in need of a major attitude adjustment!

And the basic end result of this whole fracas is that Israel has – once again – thumbed their nose dared us to stop them from building. And unless I am VERY mistaken…we won’t. Once again.

Wanted: a president with a spine. If found, notify the general public and elect at the earliest possible time.

From the link you provided -

*************************************************
“But Media Matters, the far-Left activist group founded by David Brock, continues to peddle this twaddle. Its website proclaims: “On The Middle East: It’s Palin vs. Petraeus & New Poll.” They quote statements made by Sarah Palin supportive of Israel and critical of the Obama administration’s attempts to pressure Israel on West Bank settlements and then gleefully proclaim: “But that isn’t how Petraeus sees it.” The item goes on:

Speaking about the Israeli-Palestinian issue before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, Petraeus said:

“The enduring hostilities between Israel and some of its neighbors present distinct challenges to our ability to advance our interests… Israeli-Palestinian tensions often flare into violence and large-scale armed confrontations. The conflict foments anti-American sentiment, due to a perception of U.S. favoritism for Israel. Meanwhile, al-Qaeda and other militant groups exploit that anger to mobilize support. The conflict also gives Iran influence in the Arab world through its clients, Lebanese Hizballah and Hamas….”

Actually, that’s not what Petraeus said. Rather, it’s pulled from the 56-page Central Command “Posture Statement” filed by his staff with the Senate Armed Services Committee. ”
***********************************************************
Max Boot destroys his own case.

Max Boot uses the old dishonest technique, so favored by liberals, of trying to transfer from disputing the relevant facts to arguing about the source and irrelevancies. Of course, what else can he do, as the words from Petraeus are clear as can be.

He says that the words are not directly from Petraeus’s mouth. So what. Max Boot, himself admits, that they are form the Central Command “Posture Statement” filed by his [Petraeus's] staff. If it’s his staff’s, it’s his. That’s the way it works in civilian life and it’s certainly true in the Army.

We have…unfortunately the road always seems to end at a kabuki theater. And the script for the play doesn’t list the USA as “the boss.”

If it’s not satire, I’m Michelle Obama.

For some reason you remark triggered something in my thinking which is rather slow tonight.

Bibi, if anyone knows his history, comes from a remarkable family. When you have a target on your back you always know who your enemies are.

That said, I would love to know Bibi’s assessment of you-know-who.

Perhaps Bibi didn’t want to have his picture taken with PP. Who would?

There’s more to this, for sure.

Cody1991 on March 26, 2010 at 9:12 PM

Bibi’s brother Yoni was the only Israeli soldier-I think he was an officer-killed during the IDF’s rescue raid on Entebbe.
Chutzpah-in the best sense of the word-runs in the family.

FYI, Aleph (or sometimes Alef) is the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Aleph may be a Mossad double agent. You just never know.

Abbott: Oh, I’ll tell you their names, but you know it seems to me they give these ball players now-a-days very peculiar names.

Costello: You mean funny names?

Abbott: Strange names, pet names…like Dizzy Dean…

Costello: His brother Daffy

Abbott: Daffy Dean…

Costello: And their French cousin.

Abbott: French?

Costello: Goofe’

Abbott: Goofe’ Dean. Well, let’s see, we have on the bags, Who’s on first, What’s on second, I Don’t Know is on third…

Costello: That’s what I want to find out.

Mr. Ron Paul, this approach to relations with our nation’s allies is foolish and dangerous.

daesleeper on March 27, 2010 at 12:07 AM

I realize that feelings are raw on this but think about it cooly for a second. How is having Israel’s security ties to the political winds of the American electoral system a good idea?

abobo on March 27, 2010 at 1:10 AM

security ties

tied that is.

macncheez on March 27, 2010 at 1:23 AM

abobo – it isn’t, but the Israelis don’t have a lot of other real friends in the world.

This is an issue that’s not going to play evenly throughout the Democrats.

Seems to me that strong-arming Israel starts to put tension on a lot of the fissures in the Democrats – between the traditional-liberal Jewish interests and the anti-Israel-or-outright-antisemitic loony-left, and between the various Senators and Congresscritters beholden to each of those factions, and the Obama crew who seems to be trying to find the limits of what they can get away with before the Chuck Schumers start looking for a way to slap him down.

The habanero sauce on Biden’s toilet paper was a bad stunt on the part of the Israelis and it left Obama and his bunch an excuse to jerk the Israelis’ chain, but at some point he’s going to find the limits of his own leash.

JEM on March 27, 2010 at 1:30 AM

I put the Jpost article up on my Facebook account. Which was probably stupid since I hang out with a bunch of artists and dancers…
At any rate, in about 10 minutes, one of my “tolerant” friends began to talk about how the Israelis should just leave the Middle East and settle in a desert part of California. Since they’ll be used to it and all. (Clearly she’s never been to Galilee or anywhere in the Middle East, for that matter.)
I suggested that she email one of my other friends, a Sabra, and tell him that he should leave the country he was born and raised in because his presence in said country and region offends her. Then pointed out WHERE the homes were being constructed.
Haven’t heard from her since….

disillusioned on March 27, 2010 at 1:51 AM

Good for him. Obama is a petulant little punk and Bibi shouldn’t feel like he has to appease him in any way. In fact, he ought to just write us off as an ally until this douche is sent packing because no amount of concessions will win him over anyway. We are pretty much useless to them for the next three years at least. I wish them the best of luck; no doubt Iran will be looking for ways to take further advantage of the schism while it lasts.

NoLeftTurn on March 27, 2010 at 2:08 AM

I read the Noah Pollak piece.. But i have to say he is sweating too much – the biggest factor that Israel has to worry about is having to engage in …gulp.. a dogfight with US Airforce personnel over Iraqi airspace if its going to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The condemnation from Europe and Arab states etc is par for the course and does not mean anything for a nation that has faced an existential crisis from day one… If anything it will only strengthen their resolve.

Either that or they are finished – something tells me that the Israelis are made of sterner stuff.

nagee76 on March 27, 2010 at 2:52 AM

Obama has been seriously wrong when it comes to policy with the I’s of the world – Iraq, Iran, Israel and India.

Thank you America for giving us “hope and change”.

May be Jeremiah Wright, Farrakhaan, Ayers will join Obama for dinner one of these days and congratulate him on his “successful mission”

nagee76 on March 27, 2010 at 2:58 AM

I hope Israel can hold out 3 more years.

Obama is not their ally even one bit.

I really, really like Netanyahu. And have no doubts that he will (continue to) do what is right for Israel. God bless this man.

Here’s a cool video of Bibi from 1978.
http://wejew.com/media/4136/Ben_Nitay_aka_Bibi_Netanyahu_1978_Debates_Ajami/

He’s 28 years and talks extensively about Palestinian Determination and the real problem back then and which still remains today.

jollybird on March 27, 2010 at 11:53 AM

“Right-wing coalition”??

How ironic. This is a coalition which includes the Israeli Labor Party, which is the Israeli Left. The Kadima party (which was created by former-Likud member Sharon and is now headed by former-Likud member Livni) is pretending to be Centrist.

If Obama intends to play King Maker in Israel, he should stop relying on radical-leftist Israelis and newspaper to forge his opinion.
