Netanyahu: The building in east Jerusalem will continue

posted at 7:36 pm on March 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

Sounds like that middle finger from The One at the White House earlier this week didn’t have the desired effect. Go figure.

Late Friday evening, Israel Radio reported that Netanyahu holds to the view that Israel must not change its policy in Jerusalem, despite the fact that this was the main point of contentions between Israel and the United States.

However the circle of seven top ministers, known collectively as the ‘Septet’, did not come to any conclusions following the five-hour discussion and will probably only announce the government’s position after the Passover Seder which occurs Monday evening.

That’s not the only disappointment he has in store for Obama, assuming Haaretz’s reporting is accurate:

In closed talks, Netanyahu clarified that he has no intention of breaking up his rightwing coalition to form a more moderate centrist alliance, despite continuing pressure from the United States for a compromise over Israeli building in east Jerusalem.

“I do not need coalition partners to pressure me into continuing to build in Jerusalem,” he said. “I, myself, plan to continue building in Jerusalem as all previous prime ministers did before me.”

We’re dealing with boutique issues involving a foreign country here, but does everyone grasp how stupid it is to make building in Jerusalem some sort of linchpin condition to peace talks? As Netanyahu notes, it was never a controversial issue before; in fact, read this post at Commentary quoting an exchange Obama envoy George Mitchell had with Charlie Rose just two months ago in which Mitchell all but shrugged at the idea of Israelis building there. Quote: “It’s what they regard as their country. They don’t say they’re letting us go ahead when we build in Manhattan.” But now, because of the diplomatic affront to building there during Biden’s visit, Obama’s prepared to make this some sort of cornerstone concession in the interest of saving face — which, ironically, will only make him lose more face as Netanyahu is forced to defy him. (The Israelis are hoping some token concessions, like releasing Palestinian prisoners, in lieu of a settlement freeze might be enough to smooth things over.) No wonder he’s holding onto his right-wing coalition, too, despite the White House’s hopes for something more centrist: According to a new poll conducted by the JPost, 48 percent of Israelis think Obama favors the Palestinians over Israel. Just 30 percent think he’s neutral and a cool nine percent think he’s pro-Israeli. Sounds like the makings of concessions from a right-wing government to me!

To the great surprise of no one, Iran has now seized on this spat and is propagandizing the hell out of it, turning the non-issue of Jerusalem settlements into a very big issue indeed, which will make it that much harder to reach a peace agreement. But then, who could have seen that coming, except everyone? Exit question: Is Noah Pollak right? Netanyahu can’t cave to Obama without looking dangerously weak but alienating the U.S. will leave Israel dangerously isolated, so he may feel obliged to do something desperate. Good work, smart power.

It seems awkward for anyone to try to tell Jews in which neighborhoods of Jerusalem they may not live.

The role of George Mitchell is to minimize the issues presented by both sides. In business and politics, that’s what the best negotiators do.

While the housing issue has been propagandized by the most undesirable parts of the Mideast crowd, that doesn’t mean that you can write it off as irrelevant, just as you can’t write off Israeli concerns on similar grounds.

This imbroglio will push Netanyahu and Ehud Barak closer together. Both are cautious men not given to “desperate” measures. Obama will not panic Israel into attacking Iran prematurely, but it’s possible the Israelis will panic Obama into losing his bearings in front of American voters.

Jerusalem was a jewish city long before the the advent of Islam. Any muslim presence there was established by force of arms. Remember the Crusades? Ever heard the term “crusaders” used by muslims? The Byzantine Empire (christian) was comprised of most of the Mediterraean basin and was brought down my militant Islamic operations. The Jews refused to submit which engendered the enmity of the Muslims and the intolerance and terror continues today. The Muslims have no legitimate claim to the land. Don’t confuse Arabs with Muslims.

LarryG on March 27, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Obama has focused on the wrong type of building.

Instead of pounding on Israel for building in their own capital, Obama should be pounding on Iran for building a nuclear weapon.

But Obama is blind to the truth.

Will viewing the mushroom cloud be the only thing that helps Obama see the light?

texasconserv on March 27, 2010 at 5:52 PM

My money is on Netanyahu. Should push come to shove, all he has to do is make a token effort and wait for the Palestinians to do something stupid(probably won’t have to wait long!)Voila! Justification for N to not only do as he pleases he could also say ‘I told you so’. Just a bit of wonderment here? Are the Palestinians now making a habit of running to O with their grievances? and do you suppose that Joe really felt insulted enough to possibly cause something serious in the Middle East? They are a thin skinned and vengeful lot in that WH. Nah! Just O looking to make a name for his glorious presidency and punish those who dare defy him.

We owe China lots of money due to them buying our debts. Using the US’s logic, shouldn’t China also start telling us we can’t build in some City in the US because they don’t think it is right.

So the much celebrated Seder at the Whitehouse will happen again this year. I suppose as it ends and the people will say “next year in Jerusalem”, Obama will interrupt with a “let me be clear.” Should be interesting.

Let’s see…Jews are highly over-represented in the fields of medicine, science, music as well as having suffered persecution and genocide for centuries…And, muslims have the market cornered on bomb-throwing terrorists. Who do you think be Obama choose for friends? Look for Obama to retaliate againsts Israeli insolence by blocking funding, trade, mil support, sharks with freaking laser beams, something…It’s his way! The pencil neck geek has one helluva Napoleon complex.

I remember George Bush Jr., promising to move the US embassy to Jerusalem in a campaign speech. Needless to say it’s still in Tel Aviv. During the Carter administration, the U.N. voted for resolution 478 that declared Jerusalem law null and void. This Law states that Jerusalem would be Israel’s capital city for eternity. The US abstained from the vote. All Nations moved their embassies to Tel Aviv. If America wants to show support for Israel we need to move our embassy. Should have done it right after 9/11!

jollybird on March 27, 2010 at 7:34 PM

People forget that Israel did not take East Jerusalem from the PLO. They took it from the Jordanian Army. After 1949 the Arab states ignored the UN partiton and annexed these territories that had been partitioned for the Palestinians. Jordan has not asked for Jerusalem or the West bank to be returned to it. By building in East Jerusalem and annexing the Old City, Israel is collecting spoils of war. People in the State Dept or the WH who don.t like it can start redrawing maps around the world. Start with Tibet.

xkaydet65 on March 27, 2010 at 7:41 PM

Arab/Muslim logic:

1. We won’t talk to Israel until they stop building HOMES for Jews in Jerusalem.

2. Hey, let’s talk to Iran because they’re building NUCLEAR weapons.

So, if Israel was building NUCLEAR weapons the Arabs would talk to them?

Fvckin’ muzzie intellect! Its amazing.

Obama’s upset because Netanyahu upsets Obama’s New Slave Land. Really, seriously here, Obama’s attempts at present to determine the very living arrangements of Americans AND ISRAELITES IN THEIR OWN LAND suggests to me Obama’s attempts to control people beyond any reasonable means. Dictator, slave master? He certainly does wage a racialist socio-economic war on other people (Obama does) (and it’s also the nature of his appeal to those who are craziest about him).

Netanyahu is quite a guy. God bless him.

Since boxing Israel into a corner was Obama’s goal, it was, unfortunately, smart power. Very crafty.

I do think Bibi can outwait him but it might be touch and go for awhile. As Noah pointed out, whatever concessions he makes, Obama can just apply the same screws at the next level. So no point making any.

Keep emailing him encouragement and letting him know America is rooting for him, and to stay strong.

You can see Ramat Shlomo in the north, already designated as a Jewish area which it always was. You would think Biden could check a map before he went off the deep end. Well, no, it being Biden, no, you could not assume that. But seriously, we all know this was a put-up job. They were going to find some pretext to create a made-up stink to start their intimidation job.

Jerusalem is a very interesting place and most of it is beautiful, you should go visit. Well, all of Israel is like that.

We need to continue with our metaphorical (resistance) building while Israel builds homes in Jerusalem.

Ed, FYI—just a quick note regarding this issue. Apparently 300+ members of the House of Representatives have signed a bipartisan letter of concern (?) to send to the president regarding the strident tone he is adopting toward Israel. It was supposedly a quick and rapid attempt to demonstrate support toward Israel as well as a way to warn the president that he’s out on his own with this snitty treatment he’s giving Bibi.

The United States would “seriously consider abstaining” should the United Nations Security Council pass a resolution condemning Israel’s housing construction in East Jerusalem, the BBC reported on Sunday.

That message was passed during a meeting between a senior U.S. official and Qatari Foreign Minister Hamad Bin Jasim Al Thani, a diplomatic source told the BBC.

Sheikh Hamad reportedly asked a senior official from the Obama administration whether the U.S. would promise not veto a Security Council resolution condemning Israel’s settlement activity in East Jerusalem.

The U.S. official reportedly told Hamas in response that the current U.S. position was that it would “seriously consider abstention”, according to the BBC.

It’s kind of like not voting. If the rest of the Council voted in favor, it would be passed. Permanent members have a veto (US, UK, France, Russia and China, I think). Rest of council is a rotating membership with different countries, who do not have a veto.

The Carter Administration “abstained” when the security council voted to null and void the Jerusalem Law, which declared Jerusalem, Israel’s Eternal Capital. Becaouse we didn’t veto the resolution it was passed and all nations pulled their ebassies out of Jerusalem and moved to Tel Aviv.

It doesn’t suprise me that Barry’s administration follows the same pattern as Carter’s. Barry needs to lead the world not follow and focus on isolating our enemies not our allies.

No matter how much the US rejects Israel “I believe” that if Israel does go through and actually attacks Iran’s nuclear sites the US will be forced to finish the job and take out Iran’s missile sites, air defense sites and hopefully the nuclear sites that Israel didn’t destroy just to keep Iran from attacking its gulf neighbors and the US forces in the area and keep the oil flowing. We would have to stage massive air raids to stop Iran’s retaliation in order to restore a semblance of peace.
