Report: Obama humiliated Netanyahu at the White House

posted at 9:51 pm on March 25, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’d like to believe that this isn’t pure vindictiveness at work, that there’s an element of political strategy in it — e.g., weakening Bibi at home in order to create a more centrist coalition government, perhaps — but if I were an Israeli, I’d be so enraged that I’d want to rally behind him. So if there’s a strategy, it seems awfully stupid. If you’re coming late to the story about tensions between Obama and Netanyahu, read this Yossi Klein Halevi piece at TNR for background. In a nutshell, the right-wing part of Netanyahu’s government announced the building of new settlements in east Jerusalem on the day Biden came to visit, which allegedly sent The One into a snit over what he considered to be an insult. Never mind that Netanyahu himself apparently didn’t know about the timing of the announcement and that building in east Jerusalem, which would almost certainly remain Israeli in any peace deal, was routine. Obama wants to make a show of standing up to the Zionist entity for our Islamic “partners in peace” in the naive belief that that’ll help bring about the ever elusive solution to the crisis. So here’s his big show — I hope. It’s possible that there’s no grander strategic meaning to it at all, and that he really is just this petty.

For a head of state to visit the White House and not pose for photographers is rare. For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the President withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of…

After failing to extract a written promise of concessions on Jewish settlements, Mr Obama walked out of his meeting with Mr Netanyahu but invited him to stay at the White House, consult with advisors and “let me know if there is anything new”, a US congressman who spoke to the Prime Minister said today.

“It was awful,” the congressman said. One Israeli newspaper called the meeting “a hazing in stages”, poisoned by such mistrust that the Israeli delegation eventually left rather than risk being eavesdropped on a White House phone line. Another said that the Prime Minister had received “the treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea”…

Newspaper reports recounted how Mr Netanyahu looked “excessively concerned and upset” as he pulled out a flow chart to show Mr Obama how Jerusalem planning permission worked and how he could not have known of the announcement that hundreds more homes were to be built just as Mr Biden arrived in Jerusalem.

Mr Obama then suggested that Mr Netanyahu and his staff stay on at the White House to consider his proposals, so that if he changed his mind he could inform the President right away. “I’m still around,” the Yediot Ahronot daily quoted Mr Obama saying. “Let me know if there is anything new.”

Follow the link for the list of demands he gave Netanyahu, including “an end to Israeli building projects in east Jerusalem.” He certainly is the strong horse, isn’t he? Not with Iran, for whom we’re preparing to water down sanctions yet again because the colossus of the age can’t persuade China and Russia to agree to anything harsher. But with Israel? Strong as they come. The left will claim that he’s doing it in the interests of peace, per the theory that a settlement between Israel and the Palestinians will have some sort of domino effect against Islamist regimes that exploit the Palestinian issue, but how it advances peace to force Israel into shows of weakness is beyond me. Jackson Diehl:

Obama has added more poison to a U.S.-Israeli relationship that already was at its lowest point in two decades. Tuesday night the White House refused to allow non-official photographers record the president’s meeting with Netanyahu; no statement was issued afterward. Netanyahu is being treated as if he were an unsavory Third World dictator, needed for strategic reasons but conspicuously held at arms length. That is something the rest of the world will be quick to notice and respond to. Just like the Palestinians, European governments cannot be more friendly to an Israeli leader than the United States. Would Britain have expelled a senior Israeli diplomat Tuesday because of a flap over forged passports if there were no daylight between Obama and Netanyahu? Maybe not…

U.S. pressure on Netanyahu will be needed if the peace process ever reaches the point where the genuinely contentious issues, like Palestinian refugees or the exact territorial tradeoffs, are on the table. But instead of waiting for that moment and pushing Netanyahu on a point where he might be vulnerable to domestic challenge, Obama picked a fight over something that virtually all Israelis agree on, and before serious discussions have even begun. As the veteran Middle East analyst Robert Malley put it to The Post’s Glenn Kessler, “U.S. pressure can work, but it needs to be at the right time, on the right issue and in the right political context. The administration is ready for a fight, but it realized the issue, timing and context were wrong.”

“He appears ideological — and vindictive,” writes Diehl, reminding us that not all appearances are deceiving. I assume that Obama’s game here is that he doesn’t want to appear weak either after the insult to Biden, but it’s not clear who he’s aiming to impress by humiliating Netanyahu. The nuclear horse is almost all the way out of the barn on Iran, and we know how little China and Russia care about concessions to the U.S. Is there a strategy here or is it just O being O?

There is a strategy at work but it’s not what people think
Obama can not work with the Palestinians if they think the US is the steadfast unrelenting friend of Isreal.
This is a show, a play put on for the world. Bibi is in on it and is fully briefed on how to re-act.
Let’s convince people Isreal and the US are at odds with each other. Then the US will sit down at the table seemingly as a neutral party
Not very orginal or clever at all and I doubt it will work.

LeeSeneca on March 26, 2010 at 1:48 AM
Then you’d better add a second layer of tin-foil and screw that hat down tight. The black-helicopters are going to be looking for you in force tonight after that comment.

29Victor on March 26, 2010 at 1:58 AM
Republicans are very quiet on this issue. So is everyone else in Congress. Does it seem funny that Isreal’s most ardent supporters are silent?
They know whats up as well.
The US can not be effective is the appearance is the cards are stacked in favor of Isreal.
This is an old confidence game, I didn’t make it up or see it in my tea leaves.
This game won’t work because, unlike most bloggers pounding out non-sense on their pc’s after their Mumm has gone to bed, the Palestinians do not trust everything they see nor hear. They are masters of propaganda and manipulation of negiotiations in their own right.

Zechariah 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

Zechariah 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

Zechariah 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

Zechariah 14:2 shows what is yet coming to the Jews and Jerusalem. That the verse is yet future history is shown by, among numerous other Bible verses, Zechariah 14:4 which depicts an event that has never happened in history. Yeah, that’s why Bibi agreed to it, right? Because he doesn’t understand the Palestinians quite as well as you do.

Here’s an idea. Our president is doing pretty much exactly what Jimmy Carter did, intentionally weakening our relationships with our allies hoping that our enemies will like us better then. It won’t work because Palestinians want to push Israel into the ocean. Bibi knows that. The president doesn’t.

This proves my point.

The ruckus between the US and Isreal is a shame, a mere performance to position the US for seemingly even handed talks.

LeeSeneca on March 26, 2010 at 2:24 AM

I agree with Daniel Greenfield of Sultan Knish. America is experiencing Battered Wife Syndrome.

Is Benjamin Netanyahu the new leader of the free world? I said he was after his passionate and honest speech at the UN wherein he reminded everyone that the Holocaust was a real event. The sooner we vote Obama out, the better.

Isn’t it amazing? Lefties (who had apparently never read the Bible), claimed that President Bush and the “religious right” wanted to jump-start Armageddon. But what President Obama is setting up now looks far more like the Biblical narrative than anything President Bush did.

I’m not saying that we’re on the verge of Armageddon, but if there was a president who looked like he was attempting to get it started, it would be the one we have right now.

29Victor on March 26, 2010 at 2:25 AM

Three years minus of this lying, traitorous administration.

We have overcome more dire threats and shall again. The inertia built into our Constitution is a partial protection. The absolute unconstitutionally of their actions spells failure.

LeeSeneca on March 26, 2010 at 2:24 AM

Possibly; but I’m thinking it’s just another smokescreen for America’s favorite ‘nephew’.

In an odd way this is like the Tea Parties in reverse – despite all the anger and protest, there’s no real change because there are entrenched interests that vastly outgun the protesters.

Hopefully this is the push that Mossad needs to take Zero down by releasing info about his past.

Mr Purple on March 26, 2010 at 1:01 AM

You know, this brings up a thought I had last year: what do other foreign intelligence services know about our President’s background? It might be fascinating what the FSB knows, and about a great many things.

I think “humiliated” is a pretty strong term here.
David2.0 on March 26, 2010 at 12:36 AM

Not to patronize you or belittle your understanding of diplomacy, but I think the usage of “humiliated” here was meant more in the diplomatic context than a personal one. I mean, I think you’ll get agreement on this thread that Netanyahu wasn’t necessarily personally humiliated. Most of us probably imagine he’s capable of handling his own with the President (as Blacklake points out above).

So, isn’t it possible that, just maybe, you’re a little too facile in your interpretation of the journalist’s description?

You obviously don’t know anything about infosec.

Yes it is amazing. I also am not saying that we are on the verge of Armageddon for I don’t know for a fact that we are but I wouldn’t be surprised if we are on the verge of Armageddon, the biblical one that is, for there are many things revealed in the Bible, that are a preluded to Armageddon, that started in exactly 1948 A.D.

Basil Fawlty on March 26, 2010 at 2:40 AM

Basil Fawlty on March 26, 2010 at 2:40 AM

Make that prelude not “preluded”.

Basil Fawlty on March 26, 2010 at 2:46 AM

As to the Catholics, I don’t know other than they are already led astray, mostly due to Vatican II. A lot of Marxists creeped into the Church and Pope John Paul, though he was an avowed Communist-fighter, seemed to foster many of the Marxist “reinterpretations” of Catholic theology.

Which explains the preposterous heresy of Nancy Pelosi, Kerry, Biden and the other Democrats who claim to be ‘catholic’ but appear to assume that means it’s “The Church of Marx”.

Lourdes on March 25, 2010 at 10:36 PM

I think you have it exactly backwards regarding John Paul II, who singlehandedly shut down the thriving South American liberation theology cancer. Good Lord, it was JPII that gave Reagan the courage and know how to take on the commies with winning strategery. JPII had been doing it for years as a Bishop and Cardinal; before that he lived under it’s grinding oppression, working as slave labor for the commies in the mines by day and secretly studying for the priesthood by night. For an absolutely stellar and in-depth biography of JPII, especially as regards his take on the complete incompatibilty of Marxism/communism and Christianity, read George Weigel’s Witness to Hope.

So, like (outside of misspelling my name), you’re fine with Israeli school children being blown up by Palestinians? That was my question, which you didn’t answer in your response that you claim wasn’t a response. And, you’re fine that Obow doesn’t complain about such killings, right?

Is that what I got from your response that you claim wasn’t a response? A non-answer to a pointed question in a non-response from you.

Am I reading that right?

Liam on March 26, 2010 at 2:48 AM

The cardinal sin in war is underestimating the enemy.

First and foremost: Make no mistake that this administration is waging war against individual property rights and Capitalism (not to mention those who hold them dear).

Next: Its time the Right acknowledged that Obama/Pelosi/etc are driven more by ideology than politics. We must therefore fight on ideological grounds, or at least not underestimate the lengths Statist ideologues will resort to.

Last: We should support our allies: One reason this Israeli administration is hated by this administration is because it is more Capitalistic than its predecessors. (And Israel’s economy is rocking!)

This Israeli administration needs Conservative America’s vocal support now!

Quetzal on March 26, 2010 at 2:53 AM

David2.0 on March 26, 2010 at 12:59 AM

This is the kind of thing Obow would say. “Impress me,” is his weak way.

That’s also a chat room kind of comment.

How quaint! And…ummm…unprecedented and unexpected!

Liam on March 26, 2010 at 2:55 AM

Fawlity and Senneica are fulla the usual disinformation. So sorry. Even America does not determine Israel’s actions. Israel is an independent world state. Well chosen.
Obama may desire Israel’s failure in order to promote whatever the Filthy Liar’s ultimate goal.

And just why should Israel cooperate in her demise?

And just why should America Cooperate in her demise?

Bricks and missed shots are imagination, wishful thinking on the part of liars. The Fascists are not the users of the Second Amendment. Accuracy is an attribute of conservatives. Stupidity typical of Democrats. Anger by Fascists needs physical violence. Correction of stupidity needs thought.

So FO liars. Israel and America will survive your attacks and emerge even stronger. Indeed, it is by your opposition that defects in our Constitution are recognized and amended.

To wit: Charles Krauthammer and Bill O. keep saying this clown is intelligent. Which causes all kinds of problems when one has to deal with His supporters. I will elaborate in the future but such remarks support the man. And He does not deserve the credibility.

IlikedAUH2O on March 26, 2010 at 6:06 AM

Consequences of this? Just off the top of my head – Israel will never trust the US as an intermediary in negotiations with the Palestinians again. As far as Israel is concerned, she has long considered building in parts of eastern Jerusalem a matter long settled and with US agreement. It’s clear that changes in presidents can mean bye bye to any so-called agreements.

Will Israel now see that it will be up to her to try to stop Iran? Obama is truly an idiot – Netanyahu is NOT misrepresenting Israelis when he tells Obama that Iran, not the ‘peace process’ is Israel’s first priority. That was a major part of the reason why Netanyahu was elected. Obama cannot be foolish enough to think that Israelis will think that the US will take the Iranian problem more seriously if Netanyahu’s government fails.

It seems to me that Obama is laying the background for the Samantha Power scenario. Of course in a year or two if Israel doesn’t act against Iran – because it is obvious the US won’t – that won’t be necessary. Israel will be finished. I wonder if Obama will proudly proclaim that a “success” of his administration.

Sheesh… that is a pretty brutally odd way of thinking – if anything, Obama just upped the ante for the Palestenians – they dont have to do anything until building of the East Jerusalem settlements are called off – or worse, this could be used as an excuse to get even bigger concessions from Israel.. and i am not talking about the Arabs making an excuse – i am talking about Obama.

From my vantage point Obama has basically sent a message to Israeli’s – “if you want my support, dump Bibi and make Livni or Barak your next PM…”

It is as simple as that – Obama wants a new Israeli Government.

It has become apparent that Benito Obama is a crazy punk, bent on destroying this country as we know it. He no longer plans on being elected, maybe be declared leader for life or go to the U.N. to further stroke his ego. Hopefully, this country and his party will catch on before its too late. If not, the Democratic party and the country are doomed.

How surprising that a man who used to have dinner each week with a former member of the PLO, a man who attended a church that published Hamas propaganda would express anti-Israel bias?

All the warning signs about Obama were evident before the election. Shame more people didn’t realise then.

And AP, you’re actually tying to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one? Really?

The Joe Biden? Vice President? The guy who told a man in a wheelchair to “get up”? Who commended to God the departed soul of the mother of Ireland’s President? Who evidently was still alive and not dead?

Zechariah 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

In Spanish it basically says the same: “Mas el resto del pueblo no será cortado de la ciudad”.

Does this mean that Israelis will still be in Jerusalem in spite of the chaos and won’t leave, or is strictly a border issue?

Thanks! I appreciate others’ members input. The whole Zachary book is very interesting, since there is some inkling to The Book Of Revelations, which is my favorite. Therefore: We’re toast.

How much longer can this fool demonstrate disdain for Israel before the douchewater Iran has nukes and is emboldened enough to attack them. I believe most countries in the region secretly like having them around for their people to have a target for their anger (rather than their own government). Syria? They just want to stay in power… same for Egypt, Saudi, Jordan. None of them picture themselves and the potential power that rules the region. One does. The one that is NOT Arab. The one that wants to bring back the Persian Empire.

If Iran can eliminate Israel, the surrounding countries soon turn to look at how miserable their own lives are and see their government as responsible. They then become ripe for the picking for Iran.

Obama just seems to be assisting in this revival of a Muslim Empire. Who is surprised?

Business as usual. Big words, little action.

Dart-Star you are full of it. Maybe you think it is OK to tell Jews they can only build homes in ghettos as good American policy, but good Americans actually believe in the US Constitution…maybe you should glance at once

Second, Obama and his team of Jew haters is holding the bunker buster bombs and not delivering them to Israel, Obama has not allowed the F-35 purchases but yet Obama is sendng billions of dollars and new weapons to muslim/jihadist states like Saudi.

Third Haaretz is the NY Times of Israel, a ultra-left wing anti-Jewish religion rag that is quickly losing readers except for people like you, the NY Times crowd

For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the President withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of…

In terms of his absence of pure diplomatic protocol and hospitality, ObaMao shows his true colors as a hostile punk, unworthy of holding the reins of power in these United States. There isn’t a leader abroad that doesn’t have his number as a weak horse, and he is being played by hostile forces jockeying for power. It is unfortunate for world peace and the balance of power that ObaMao is such an ideologically driven tool aiding in the extension of the caliphate.

Between Foreign and domestic policy, Obama appears a man who relishes his enemies. He should be careful as some of these folks play for keeps.

J_Crater on March 26, 2010 at 8:23 AM

All I will say here is that if we lose Israel as a friend and an ally, this nation as we know it right now is finished.

And Obama will have much to answer for if that happens.

More than even he could possibly imagine.

Bibi should have shown Obama a flow chart on how to release his birth certificate.

“The Corner’s” K-Lo reports this morning:

Yesterday I noted that: “Rush Limbaugh suggests Israel should just change its name to Iran. It’s the key to be treated well by the U.S.: No pressure, no impolite diplomatic language, no pushing it to give up land.”

A reader responds:

Why stop at that ??? If Israel changed its name to Venezuela, Netanyahu would find himself “high-five”-ing and hugging and smooching with, not only Obama, but a whole slew of Washington and Hollywood “celebrities” before he even had time to blink.

I see our weak president can bully our friends and bows to our enemies, what a lefty. The amount of pride this BO has astounds me and when his fall comes it won’t be pretty. This guy can bully Israel, Hondouras, and the UK. He also bullies his opposition here in the homeland. What a surprize after he told us he would be the great unifier.

garydt on March 26, 2010 at 8:45 AM

Every time their is Israeli thread that AP or Ed posts the same question comes up over and over and over again. Why do Jews vote blindly for the Democratic Party. First, you have to look at the left/right movement since the Age of Enlightenment. Left was about universality, freedom for all peoples and equality. And with those rights you find those same ideas in Talmudic law. While the Right in the beginning and for a long time were royalists, racists, bigots, aristocratic, etc. Now, things have change but when a group of people have mindset that about a certain group of people that was more or less true up until the 50/60\’s then its hard to change that mindset. Like I mention before, since the Jewish people have been repressed by other peoples for a millennia its hard to turn your back on a movement that always been on your side until recently. Jewish people are very weary of religious Christians because of the history of Christianity/Judaism. Now I know and my fellow Jewish cohorts here at Hot Air know times have change and their nothing to \’fear\’ about evangelical Christianity. But most Jews use the excuse for not liking religious Christians is that they say that you want to convert us all or have us all move to Israel so that JC can come back. It\’s an easy excuse for people to make so that they don\’t have to think hard about changing loyalties or ideology. But we have become our own worse enemies now. With most Jews blindly allying themselves with the Left they are blind of the pure hatred of Jews from the Left. While not all lefties hate Jews, their is a growing minority that do and if this large minority came from the Right the press, government officials would be all over it. Since this hatred now comes mainly from the Left, Jewish people are trying to find \’reasons\’ for this hatred. Since most do not want to leave left-wing politics, they are looking for excuses for why left-wing people hate Jews. That is why J Street came to being. If only gave more of this or more that, the left will love of us again. That\’s where I want to laugh. The left hate us not only for Israel, but in my view for being one the three pillars of Western Civilization and in my view the most people pillar. That is why they hate the Jewish people. But with Obama being so blatantly anti-Israel many more Jews will open up their eyes and ask themselves why I am blindly loyal to a party that does not like me?

Obama wants to make a show of standing up to the Zionist entity for our Islamic “partners in peace” in the naive belief that that’ll help bring about the ever elusive solution to the crisis.

Or how about: Obama has no frickin’ clue what he’s doing!

Please stop referring to Arabs living in Israel as “Palestinians”. There is no such animal. They were called Arabs up until the Israeli state was created. Palestine was an area under the control of the Ottoman Empire. It was never a country. The Jews gave up a large tract for peace. It is now called Jordan. The Arabs OCCUPYING Israeli land have two choices. To live among Israelis or move to any Arab country that will have them, which for the past few decades is none. For the record, I’m not a Jew, but I consider myself a Catholic Zionist. To all those that think the Jews should cave I have one word:HOLOCAUST…………

I sent this email to the only email address I could find for Netanyahu last night. The email address I sent to should pop up at the end of the text of the letter. Perhaps if we all talk to our friends we can inundate with enough letters for Israel to know that Obama truly does NOT speak for the rest of us and really is just a rude boorish fool!

beginning the sent email:

Most true Americans are very unhappy with the current administration running this country. For this reason I’d like to express a humble apology to PM Netanyahu for the rude conduct of our American president. Tactlessness and rudeness should never be allowed to ANY head of state no matter what any administration should consider ally or enemy.

Many of us do still consider Israel an ally, in fact the only ally we Americans have in the Mid East. We are very distressed of the constant state of war that Israel exists under. The fact that the current administration has proven that they prefer to be more in line with Arab and Iranian administrations is detestable to us. Why remains a question for another day, however I think we all really know the answer.

Please accept the apology of a humble American for the ignorant actions of our liberal president whom some of us consider to be downright traitorous in nature, in our humble opinions.

My sincerest and most heartfelt thanks!

The left will claim that he’s doing it in the interests of peace, per the theory that a settlement between Israel and the Palestinians will have some sort of domino effect against Islamist regimes that exploit the Palestinian issue,

Well that might make sense, if anyone were foolish enough to believe that the Palestinians were actually interested in a peace settlement. But we all know they’re not. If they were, they’d have had ones years ago. The Israelis have already offered them everything but their own self-destruction, and the Palestinians always refuse — because Israel’s destruction is what they really want, and any deal that omits that is a non-starter.

Obama has demonstrated once again — as if any more proof were needed — that he is a dangerous fool.

AZCoyote on March 26, 2010 at 10:03 AM

Just as well. At least now there’s no chance Bibi will hurt Israel by acting in reliance on anything this bozo might tell him.

I Can’t stand Fox on Friday anymore. I can’t stand Whorealdo and rarely listen to OReally.

Is Obama a closet muslim? I am starting to think that is really the case. Otherwise how does one explain his lack of protocol and rudeness when it comes to Israeli concerns.

Rndguy on March 26, 2010 at 7:28 AM

There are many explanations for his disgusting behavior without resorting to the “closet Muslim” conjecture. Not that I believe anything Obama states, including his religion. (After all, he is the only president who publicly uttered the words “my Muslim faith” before George Stephanopoulis corrected him!) But with all that’s wrong and deceitful about him, there’s no need to talk about his religion or national origin. To typical folks, those issues tend to make the accuser look a bit crazy, and Obama more . . . “dignified”.

He no longer plans on being elected, maybe be declared leader for life or go to the U.N. to further stroke his ego. Hopefully, this country and his party will catch on before its too late.
