Rasmussen: 55% want ObamaCare repealed

posted at 11:36 am on March 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

And so it happens that Democrats finally celebrate the passage of Agenda Item #2 in their 111th Session of Congress thirteen months after passing Agenda Item #1.  Hope they get a chance to party hearty for now, because the ObamaCare bill has the American electorate in an entirely different kind of mood.  What does it say for the Democrats that a solid majority of voters don’t just dislike the bill it took them so long to pass, but want it repealed as soon as possible?

Just before the House of Representatives passed sweeping health care legislation last Sunday, 41% of voters nationwide favored the legislation while 54% were opposed. Now that President Obama has signed the legislation into law, most voters want to see it repealed.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, conducted on the first two nights after the president signed the bill, shows that 55% favor repealing the legislation. Forty-two percent (42%) oppose repeal. Those figures include 46% who Strongly Favor repeal and 35% who Strongly Oppose it.

In terms of Election 2010, 52% say they’d vote for a candidate who favors repeal over one who does not. Forty-one percent (41%) would cast their vote for someone who opposes repeal.

Not surprisingly, Republicans overwhelmingly favor repeal while most Democrats are opposed. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 59% favor repeal, and 35% are against it.

Undeniably, there will be some districts where ObamaCare is popular, and repeal efforts will gain no foothold in Congressional or Senate races.  However, those safe seats for Democrats have begun to narrow sharply, while the midterms look more and more like an ObamaCare referendum.  If so, then Democrats have marginalized themselves behind their radical, partisan leadership — and can expect to return for the 112th session a much narrower, partisan group.

The demographics of repeal show big problems for Democrats.  It’s favored in every age demographic, including 53% of young voters (18-29) who strongly favor repeal.  A majority of every income demographic supports repeal as well, except for those in the $100K+ bracket, which opposes repeal 57/43.  Even 27% of Democrats favor repeal, with 22% favoring it strongly.

Under those conditions, which party will get their votes in November?  According to another survey question, 52% will vote for the pro-repeal candidate, including 22% of Democrats.  Majorities of men and women agree, as do majorities or pluralities of every age demographic.

Republicans need to keep the focus on ObamaCare until the midterms.  Democrats can’t defend it, nor can they defend the process that produced it.  They can celebrate all they want now, but they’ll find themselves out of their jobs if they can’t stop talking about their one legislative victory.

If the Republicans can keep the fact that the IRS is the inforcement behind this upermost, there should be only the far left who is not for repeal.

A majority of every income demographic supports repeal as well, except for those in the $100K+ bracket, which opposes repeal 57/43.

How is this? Most of those over $250,000 were going to get hit hard. Why don’t they want this mess repealed?

capejasmine on March 25, 2010 at 11:41 AM

In addition to the stats above, one needs to keep in mind that the \’benefits\’ of the plan don\’t fully kick in until 2013/2014, while the taxes, etc. start to kick in quickly. These poll numbers will get worse, adding momentum to the repeal movement, until final repeal in 2013.

SEC. 203. COMMISSIONED CORPS AND READY RESERVE CORPS.

(a) ESTABLISHMENT.—

(1) IN GENERAL.—There shall be in the Service a commissioned Regular Corps and a Ready Reserve Corps for service in time of national emergency.

(2) REQUIREMENT.—All commissioned officers shall be citizens of the United States and shall be appointed without regard to the civil-service laws and compensated without regard to the Classification Act of 1923, as amended.

Does this make it possible for a “national emergency to turn into a “crony jobs” program with uncontrolled wages ?

I hate to admit it, but BOR was on tv last night in my house. lol I wasn’t paying attention, until he was interviewing Weiner. Man that guy has issues. He acted like a spoiled brat. Anyway….several times, BOR asked him about the IRS enforcing the law when it came to people not abiding by the mandates. Weener kept avoiding it, but finally said…there wouldn’t be anything like that. A HUGE lie. Why else did the IRS buy guns?

The lies continue, so whenever they say anything, don’t believe it, because they intend to enforce this on every man, woman, and child….and will do so as they see fit.

On “This Week” last week, ‘Puff’ Daschle and Trent ‘Raaaaacist!’ Lott were on the panel. I forget exactly what they were talking about, but something in the 90s they passed, something about either Social Security or maybe something about Medicare Advantage? Anyway, Lott remembered they had to rush through some kind of repeal as soon as Congress was back in session due to the overwhelming anger they were hit with when they went back home on break.

Is it possible, even slightly possible, that we just might have the same sort of dynamic here, just on steroids?

If listening to local talk radio here on Cape Cod is any indication of the mood of the electorate, I might posit that people are just now starting to realize that Obama is a clear and present danger to our nation. I have always thought that but then again I am decidedly in the minority here in Teddy’s backyard. The people this morning that called in were really frightened of what they were seeing and said that it represented a big change in their attitude and opinion of Obama from a year ago.

Call me an eeyore if you need to but I really think this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

If you are pro-O-Care but just running for School Board, will you have a chance in most of America? Probably not.

Did you see Stossel on Fox, and Friends this morning? Now I can’t get on board with everything Stossel believes in, but his example of how we’re stealing from our kids, and grandkids was perfect.

There were young children, from toddler, to probably 6 or 7. All sitting on a blanket, and playing. Stossel walks in, and starts grabbing their toys from them, and telling them….I need these. Because I’m old, I need them now. The littelest…a girl, couldn’t even speak yet, seemed to understand what he was saying, and doing, and started to get angry, and cried.

This is exactly what is happening, and seeing these kids faces, could really put this all into perspective.

Kids are wising up, and they need to be retaught the virtues of freedom, and libery, and the value of hard work.

MSNBC is trying to portray the people who are throwing bricks and threatening the Democrat Congressman who voted YES on this Bill as TEA Partiers. BUT the Anti Government folks are not synonymous with TEA Partiers. The idea is that the Independents can be separated from the TEA Party Movement by painting the TEA Party Movement as the Fringe.

I am an Independent, and I am not Buying it. In fact it might surprise the Current Administration and MSNBC that the make up of the TEA Party is largely Independents. Let’s not forget PUMAS help with getting Scott Brown elected up in Massachusetts. The Democrats are in trouble for passing this POS. That was a real short victory lap. Now they are the “Victim Party” Who wants Victims running the country?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhic_victory

Although it is most closely associated with a military battle, the term is used by analogy in fields such as business, politics, law, literature, and sports to describe any similar struggle which is ruinous for the victor. For example, the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, writing of the need for coercion in the cause of justice, warned that: “Moral reason must learn how to make a coercion its ally without running the risk of a Pyrrhic victory in which the ally exploits and negates the triumph.”

Obama should have read his Niebuhr..

Kind of.
What it really does is set the stage for a “national emergency” to take place before the next election and all the “right” people to be put in charge until further notice.

I stick by my prediction that there will be no elections this fall due to a “national emergency” that will have to be addressed. The coup is taking place right out in the open and nothing can be done to stop it. That chance ended with the election of 08.

I’m not even sure if that’s even a valid factor, though. Whether or not the good people in Mass are even affected, I can imagine just the outrage of “We don’t want this, we sent a message via Scott Brown that we didn’t want this, and you did it anyway??”

The polls are still bouncing around quite a bit. Only 40% of the sample in another post-passage poll think the Attorneys General lawsuit against the health plan is a good idea (vs. 51% opposed).

Jimbo3 on March 25, 2010 at 12:01 PM

Oh really? Selectively poll selecting? I guess you didn’t see this one?

62% want the Republican’s to keep fighting this bill

Read it and weep.

Knucklehead on March 25, 2010 at 12:08 PM

–Why would most of these people (apart from the State Legislators/Senators) ever answer a question on O-care anyways?

Jimbo3 on March 25, 2010 at 12:04 PM

They wouldn’t. I have a friend that is a city selectmen and he just answers such questions with, “It’s a good question but what we have to do is address (fill in city issue here).” The city officials in my neck of the woods don’t even run as party affiliated so most of the time you don’t even know what party they belong to if any.

Send used tea bags tampons to certain offices in D.C. ;)

capejasmine on March 25, 2010 at 12:05 PM

Yup, it’s gross, but they are now taxed.

ya2daup on March 25, 2010 at 12:13 PM

It’s no wonder they are going all out to portray dissenters as violent and dangerous. They want to shut us up.

sandee on March 25, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Yep.

Old liberal meme: Tea partiers (referred to as Teabaggers, naturally) are ignorant, racist kooks.

New liberal meme: Tea partiers (Teabaggers, to keep the vile disparagement going, of course) are violent, ignorant, racist kooks who are threatening to kill us all!

Someone better break the news to Nancy. She’s wandering around in Nancyland thinking she’ll still be Speaker come January. She’ll be lucky if her fellow Democrats elect her as ink well monitor.

RagTag on March 25, 2010 at 12:11 PM

But the city hires people right? Shouldn’t all employers have an opinion on filthylyingdictatorCare?

highhopes on March 25, 2010 at 12:14 PM

If the Republicans can keep the fact that the IRS is the inforcement behind this upermost, there should be only the far left who is not for repeal.

ORconservative on March 25, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Agreed. 16,000 new IRS agents hired to enforce ObamaCare are our times’ equivalent to Hessian mercenaries.

ya2daup on March 25, 2010 at 12:16 PM

Jimbo3 on March 25, 2010 at 12:01 PM

I’ll clue you in on something your overlords at the DNC forgot to tell you. Good legislation doesn’t become law and 7 minutes later there are multiple states filing suit to get it all repealed.

highhopes on March 25, 2010 at 12:17 PM

What the AnninCA is up with the photo of Oblivio shadow boxing?

AubieJon on March 25, 2010 at 12:18 PM

Obamacare adds almost 17,000 IRS agents to force compliance with its mandates.

If that doesn’t liquify most sentient people’s bowels, I don’t know what could.

For obvious reasons, Weiner and all Dems want to keep this fact very obscure.

marybel on March 25, 2010 at 12:19 PM

How is this? Most of those over $250,000 were going to get hit hard. Why don’t they want this mess repealed?

capejasmine on March 25, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Don’t you know? There are at least as many rich Dems are there are Pubs. Ever see which candidates receive donations from corporations and their CEOs? It’ll shock you.

Liam on March 25, 2010 at 12:19 PM

Who was the Democrat nitwit who cheered for the GOP to run against O’BozoCare in November? Riigghht. The public will be loving socialism by then, and the GOP will get smacked hard if they don’t buy in, is that the talking point?

Bring it on, girls.

Jaibones on March 25, 2010 at 11:56 AM

That was either Axelrod or Bad Bobby Gibbs.

I believe we are subject to it just like everyone else. That was Brown’s talking point on the issue.

AubieJon on March 25, 2010 at 12:18 PM

He’s not shadow boxing; he’s demonstrating proper f!sting techniques.

ya2daup on March 25, 2010 at 12:24 PM

I think it is a safe assumption that the “pro-repeal” voters will be more motivated to vote than the “keep ObamaCare” voters.

WashJeff on March 25, 2010 at 11:46 AM

Yea, the ObamaCarebots won’t be able to tear themselves away from the bong long enough to go and vote.

txdoc on March 25, 2010 at 12:39 PM

Why would most of these people (apart from the State Legislators/Senators) ever answer a question on O-care anyways?

Jimbo3 on March 25, 2010 at 12:04 PM

I would like that questioned answered since it gives me an idea of that politician’s thought process. If the person supports O-Care, that person probably thinks that government can solve any problem if enough money is thrown at the problem.

WashJeff on March 25, 2010 at 12:42 PM

On the celebrity tour by Obama, will the audiences be handpicked as usual?

mobydutch on March 25, 2010 at 11:46 AM

Please, was that a real question or did you forget the sarc tag?

heshtesh on March 25, 2010 at 12:43 PM

txdoc on March 25, 2010 at 12:39 PM

I think the mandate\IRS enforcement issue will reach the young O-Bots through comedic sources they gravitate to leading up to the election. The jokes these people will tell regarding this subject almost write themself.

WashJeff on March 25, 2010 at 12:44 PM

Not trying to derail the thread, and I have to go to work.
But someone has got to say this:

Now that y’all have seen how beyond bad 0bama has turned out, does anyone even slightly regret smearing, berating and ridiculing those of us who were screaming even before Nov. ’08 that there are serious identifiable problems with his citizenship and eligibility.

If more of the people who shouted down people like me had supported basic disclosure by the president when this issue started briefly bubbling in the MSM Dec. ’08….

Too late now – the bull’s in the china closet and the goods are all over the floor.

Yeah, I’m a bit bitter. This could have been avoided.

cane_loader on March 25, 2010 at 12:51 PM

I heard that Obama was going on a major publicity tour for ObamaCare for ‘years’. I wonder if this is still going to happen.

beeri has one talent only – campaigning. His “governing” shots are called by Soros & Co., compliments of his private-communication-while-holding-the-highest-public-office-in-the-land Blackberry.
