Cantor: Democrats “dangerously fanning the flames” by screeching about security threats

posted at 12:54 pm on March 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Via The Right Scoop, Rep. Eric Cantor announced that his office has received threats for his positions on issues as well as his Jewish heritage, and that one of his offices had a window shot out. He only spoke out about this to combat the unbalanced reporting of fringe threats against members of Congress. Cantor singled out DCCC chair Rep. Chris van Hollen for exploiting fringe threats for political gain, “fanning the flames” to “dangerous levels.” Cantor declared that “enough is enough,” and implored his colleagues from both parties to let law enforcement handle the threats from the political fringes:

I think Cantor put this very well. Threats of political violence come from the fringes of American debate, and represent no one and no movement except the lunatics who make the threats. The “I’m getting death threats” has become a tired meme in the American media, and a handy way for politicians to avoid the responsible accountability that mainstream Americans demand. And it’s not just Democrats who have indulged in that avoidance strategy in the past, although they’re certainly the culprits of the moment.

Here at Hot Air, we don’t tolerate threats of violence against either ourselves, other commenters, or elected representatives, nor do we tolerate calls for the overthrow of the American government by force. Those who indulge in that behavior will find their commenting privileges revoked without warning. We are a site devoted to engagement in the American political system, not a discussion board for militia movements, plenty of which exist elsewhere for those who want to participate in those discussions. If you choose to violate our terms of service, don’t bother e-mailing when your commenting privileges get revoked, because we’re not going to get into e-mail debates about it.

Update (AP): Cantor’s not the only Republican who’s been threatened recently (and, of course, not so recently). On a related note, here’s a fine short floor speech from Mike Pence. Stop the threats, stop the vandalism — and stop smearing law-abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong.

Blowback

That’s where I get stuck, though. Once upon a time humans thought that sickness was caused by bad spirits, or that bleeding a person could release the bad demons or whatever. Then we found the scientific means to identity pathogens and the old ways rightfully disappeared.

I could say that science can’t explain certain things in the universe, and then add the word “yet”, or I could dive into the age old argument of which came first the chicken or the egg and chalk it up to God being on a plane of existence that my three-dimensional limitations can’t understand…yet. It boggles my mind.

I am curious. If widespread violence ever did break out – you know, a socio-economic collapse – would we be able to discuss that here or not? I’m just askin’

If that happened, I would imagine that posting on HA would be the last thing on my mind. No offense to the moderators or any of the regular posters. I just think I’d be a bit too preoccupied to contribute to any online conversation at that point…

joejm65 on March 25, 2010 at 3:25 PM

If things get to that point, the intrawebs thingy will be crucial to getting information out. Sad to say, the current administration has already told us they reserve the right to monitor and shut down any or all networks in times of crisis. Bad things being done to you by your government? Good luck getting that information to others.

bikermailman on March 25, 2010 at 3:47 PM

Do battlefield conversions count when God would know that only a last-minute fear made you a believer?

Oddly enough that sounds like the current health care bill: Don’t carry insurance until you need it and then get everything you want.

Bishop on March 25, 2010 at 3:24 PM

dude–great observations. Yes, last minute conversion do count and I’ll reference to when Jesus was crucified and the convict on the cross next to him asked him if he could spend eternity with Him. Jesus said “he’ll see him in paradise.”

Second, the government does its perversion bit on anything good–ie charity converted to “wealth redistribution” and “pay nothing, get everything”. All are perversions of the kingdom of God. You should check it out, the parallels are really amazing. Moreover, you’ll discover that the best lies are 90% true–social security, welfare and so on.

He warns us that there is a period coming that is so dark, so empty of hope (of Him) that were it not shortened by the Father there would not be one believer on the last day.

For all the talk that is being banned right now, I would rather be unprepared (and yet spiritually prepared) and leave this earthly veil with my faith intact, then to surrender it to the darkness.

journeyintothewhirlwind on March 25, 2010 at 3:48 PM

Actually they accuse the Republicans of causing the deaths of 45,000 Americans every year because they wouldn’t support the Democrat healthcare plan!

(Up from the 40k a couple on months ago)

The 18,000 (up from the 12k a couple on months ago) is both the number of people who lose their health insurance each week and the number of people who die each week.

They never did explain why a dead person would need heath care insurance or Obama care.

A HS friend on FB that I’ve been going back and forth with recently (a leftie) informed me that premiums are going up at 68% per year. I fired back that last year, it was 10%, then it was 20%, then 38%, and now the charge is quickly heading for eleventy!! bazillion percent. He had no comeback for that, changed subjects.

The assassination provided Goebbels, Hitler’s Chief of Propaganda, with the excuse he needed to launch a pogrom against German Jews. Grynszpan’s attack was interpreted by Goebbels as a conspiratorial attack by “International Jewry” against the Reich and, symbolically, against the Fuehrer himself. This pogrom has come to be called Kristallnacht, “the Night of Broken Glass.”

History seldom repeats, but it often rhymes.

The isolated reports of threats provided Chris van Hollen, one of Herr Obama’s Chiefs of Propaganda, with the excuse he needed to launch a pogrom against Conservatives and Tea Party members. The reports of “death threats” was interpreted by Rep. Chris van Hollen as a conspiratorial attack by “The opposition cabal of evil doers” (consisting of the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Ed Morrissey (a Michelle Malkin lackey), Allahpundit (another Michelle Malkin lackey) and other foul sorts) against the New Order and, symbolically, against the Dear Leader Herr Obama himself. This pogrom would come to called Obamanacht.

Not to get preachy, but I can answer the chicken and the egg matter.

God created the chicken, and the rooster, first. Otherwise, there could have been no egg.

You will come to your own understanding. Keep listening to the wife, and look for faith. Faith, in the end comes from God. So, as an idea, when you’re bored or something, just ask God for faith and trust only a hair to believe.

All else will come.

I don’t see why you can’t do both. Science might eventually be able to explain anything, but that doesn’t necessarily mean things cease to become magical. I understand the math behind a musical composition, but that doesn’t mean it has no power to move me.

Esthier on March 25, 2010 at 3:57 PM

A Dem victory, to be sure. It got so clouded that, at a book store when I wanted to buy his book, the kid behind the counter wondered why I would want to read it.

But, Bork was told that liberals have a pile of rights they want implemented. A right to health care, and a job. Right to a college education, and to housing. Among other things, Bork was told.

That’s why he was so reviled. Bork is major scholar of the Constitution, and he wouldn’t have given it all to them.

By Bork’s own admission, he could find no prohibitions against abortion. His complaint was the sitting SCOTUS at the time did it all the wrong way. The Court imposed, rather than use the Tenth Amendment to reach a similar conclusion.

Liam on March 25, 2010 at 4:11 PM

The liberal species is a carrion-eating herd animal. They believe in the theory of “safety in numbers”, “group think”, and “concensus”.

On its own in the wild, it cannot survive as it has no ambition or practical skills. It depends on the largesse or the death of other, more productive species (typically, a conservative) for survival. As the conservative toils throught the day, scratching out an existence with what is available, the liberal perches on high, surveying the scene, keeping a watchful eye for any sign of a less than healthy conservative. Once located, the liberals swarm and pester the conservative constantly, not allowing it to rest or eat, until finally it falls over, spent.

Then the feast begins.

American politics is veering out of control, and though we won’t see any MSM stories about the “most polarizing president in American history” as we did ad nauseum when Bush occupied the White House, the American voters will blame Barack Obama and the democrats. They are, after all, the folks in charge. This political climate belongs to them, which is why they and their useful idiots in the MSM are spinning this so hard to be a reflection of the loony right. It’s an admirable political effort on their part, I suppose, but it won’t work. People know what a country torn asunder looks like, and they know the approximate time it began to happen. In this case, correlation will mean causation, and no one knows this better than the democrats.

The Democrats will do anything and everything to get power over the people. And pograms, gas chambers etc., are the natural consequence of socialism.

It will happen eventually if we don’t stop socialism. It always does. When things go wrong and socialists need to blame someone it ends in mass murder.

Social justice does not exist. It cannot exist. It is against all the laws of nature. There will always be winners and losers. There will always be luck. No matter what you do there will always be luck.

Fins is an idealogue, and you can’t debate someone like that with reason. They don’t have any.

If we were all put in prison for being conservative, Fins would STILL say, “Exaggerate much?”

We waste our time trying to get the libs who post here to our side. They will never come. In all and every case, they choose to defy anything we say or show.

Just last night, one lib said right up he comes here to disrupt the site; he finds it fun to rile us up. Not an exact quote but the intention is really what matters. That says all about them.

We won’t influence, in the least, any lib who comes here. They’re being here is a blood sport. We can no better get them to see our side any better than we can change a cat into a dog.

Six, Fins, Ann, Fins–take your pick–don’t want honest debate, an exchange of ideas. They have chosen their individual and collective views, and that’s their bottom line. They see us as they choose, with preconceived notions. If I marry my black girlfriend, they’ll still see me as a racist, that somehow I’m ‘oppressing’ her, making her by ‘slave’.

We’re best, I think sticking together. The libs come here to divide us, nitpicking and all else.

That’s what they are, what they’re like, and what they want to do.

Liam on March 25, 2010 at 4:53 PM

The “I’m getting death threats” has become a tired meme in the American media

I don’t really get that…a death threat is a death threat and should be taken seriously. Perhaps implying that many death threats involving politicians are in fact made up?

Dr. ZhivBlago on March 25, 2010 at 4:59 PM

Ed, I totally agree with you about we should not talk of violence; however, I do have to wonder why you seem to perpetuate the MSM’s negative connotation of the word “militia”. My understanding of this word is citizenry who are not paid, but are ready to repel invasion or insurrection. Straighten me out if I’m wrong.

Maybe some are true. I want to hear about the arrests first. Phone calls can be tracked. Let’s see if there are any arrests.

And, I want it proved that the Tea Party, as a whole or by direct extension, is responsible.

I posted a rebuttal to AP’s referencing as moronic any argument which uses the founders’ cries of “taxation without representation.”

It disappeared.

Thinking a computer mishap, I reposted.

It disappeared again.

Why, AP?

I used to care about Ann, really liked her. But then things came out, and I needed to get away.

She’s not really a bad person. In a lot of ways, she’s very gentle. But, in the end, she’s going to be her own undoing. As she admitted last night, which was more than anyone else wanted to hear, she’s destructive. She admitted to having harmed other people, and her ways continue.

God have mercy on her soul because, frankly, I won’t.

She and those like her need to be shunned here on HA, by us. We need to unite now, keeping in mind we’re of same mind. WE might argue details, but we’re knit together.

That last is what counts.

Liam on March 25, 2010 at 5:19 PM

When do the threats of violence stop against the American people? Is it not violent to to say “You will not get surgery because we deem your life unworthy?” What’s a death panel but violent? Is it not violence when the IRS comes knocking at your door and threatens to seize your property for not purchasing what congress mandated you must?!
I oppose all forms of violence! All Americans need to keep demonstrations and so forth peaceful!
But talk about double standards! Democrats in congress liken themselves to royalty! They can shovel the dirt in our faces, threaten us with fines and imprisonment for not following their dictates and let someone dare utter a slur or insult from a crowd and suddenly our national security may be at risk!

If only they displayed the same kind of outrage at the Islamo fascists who shout “Death to America” as they do towards some nut in a crowd yelling an insult! If only they were as concerned about the Democrats within their own party not paying taxes as they are about some family who can’t afford to pay the cost of the insurance they mandate!

This congress is so out of control! They have set themselves completely against the American people! God help us that we can survive until 2012!

What we witness going on in public is bad enough. I can only imagine the plans they discuss in secret!

JellyToast on March 25, 2010 at 5:19 PM

No, that’s not violence. That’s force.

Dems claim to hate violence (except when they want it), but force is their thing.

The IRS doesn’t use violence to get your money, but uses force.

Black Panthers carry clubs to a voting place. That’s not violence, but force.

Sit-ins were force.

Among many other things. We can quibble over terms, Patriot, but it sums to ‘force’.

Kinda touchy-feely but after reading all the comments, I want to extend my thanks to The Management for being considerate enough to read the comments and responding as necessary.

It’s nice that when something like this that directly concerns us as participants comes up, that they care enough to address us. I’d like if they were a bit more generous with the banhammer at times, but their reluctance to exclude people (even when they resort to namecalling) is actually really generous of them.

So thanks, guys (and gals).

RachDubya on March 25, 2010 at 5:29 PM

Liam: Not saying I’m angry with Ed – I understand where management is coming from. More like a warning as to how insidious these things can be. One day, you wake up and a word means something different than it did yesterday, and you’re not even aware of it. Have to be vigilant as to what you let seep in to your consciousness.

fullogas on March 25, 2010 at 5:38 PM

I think this is a good opportunity to remind the management of this site that it is the commentators that drive the traffic here. While they may say this is their house and they are being magnanimous by granting the unwashed masses privileges to post, nothing could be more disingenuous and arrogant.

The traffic to this site is generated by people who come to read the thousands of comments, not the paragraph or two written by Ed or Allah. The site would be mostly blank white space in that case. And since the whole point of banning certain types of talk is, ostensibly, to protect and advance the stock value of the site, it should not be forgotten that it is the commentators, especially the more colorful amongst them, that are responsible for the lion’s share of that very marketable value. They are not a burden. They are your bread and butter.

Don’t believe it? Close all comments and watch the traffic taper off.

Check out this unreal response from Josh Marshall at TPM. I found it because I googled “tea partiers+menacing”, recalling that Marshall had begun to stoke this talking point about a week ago. Sure enough the word “menacing” appears again. And oh so much more.

His original “menacing” story can be found here at Memeorandum. Note all the similarly themed stories. “Talking points” is the perfect name for his blog and we can guess where this talking point came from.

Wolftech on March 25, 2010 at 3:05 PM

Everything that has transpired or been mentioned by barri as something he would like to see happen has been meticulously planned for some time now, by Soros, et al., down to the last shred of misinformation they feed to their media puppets, countless lobbying and internet groups and their plot to make sure that key election states get Secretary of States of their choosing elected.

They have a strategy for our enslavement already planned in detail, with point and counterpoint mapped out. We are seeing it played out in real time. barri’s blatant hijacking of the Constitution through the implemenation and content of obamacare AND student loans for 19 million kids, incredibly out-of-control and unlawful as this is, is only the logical progression after his unlawful takeover of the banks, GM, Chryser, etc. It is getting worse in orders of magnitude, and is happening at lighting speed. Soros planned it that way, and barri is his puppet who implements the skullduggery.

Unfortunately, the GOP is always left reacting, not taking the initiative, as when berri called his blair house health care dog and pony show which he needed to bring the dead bill back to life. The GOP had a few weeks warning that he was going to use them to do this, and instead of inviting him FIRST, to their own summit on JOBS, insisting that they had no time for a dead bill, and holding boobie’s feet to the fire by making him stand by his promise to “pivot” to jobs, they just waited for obama’s invite, and then were his useful idiots in giving obamacare a new life, regardless of phyrric victories such as Paul Ryan’s.

I don’t think the GOP have a short term strategy, besides knee jerk reaction to whatever narrative/actions the Dims gleefully lay on them daily, let alone a long term one. They play checkers while the commiedems play 3-D chess, and they must be really having fun right about now.

I personally think berri’s fraudlent representation of so many aspects of obamacare, i.e., “you can keep your doctor/insurance plan, abortion won’t be funded, immigrants won’t be covered, your premiums will not increase, it will reduce the debt”, to the American people in hundreds of speeches, including on prime time in the well of Congress (twice)is an impeachable offense. If he thinks the President of the United States can lie in such an egregious, chronic, complete and bald-faced fashion regarding the takeover of 1/6 of our private economy, not to mention the loss of basic rights and freedoms, and get away with it, then he surely is practicing high crimes and misdemeanors. And if he tries to claim ignorance, that is no defense in the eyes of the law, as we know. And if he was ignorant, how could he have promised what he had no knowledge of?

Yes, impeachment, even if not politically possible, should still be loudly called for because it will bring into focus the sickening disregard that berri has for his fellow citizens and the laws of this nation. PR can help slow down his swath of destruction.

The socialist Democrats in Washington have IGNORED the will of the American people for the last 14 months… and now they’ve gone all fetal over a couple of foul-mouthed phone messages and a brick through a window?
Sorry, I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck.

This is just a preemptive smear on the Tea Party movement so as to try to convince us that stay-at-home moms and retired people are a frenzied right-wing mob.

Pathetic. Maybe they could pay a little attention to the recidivism of the ACTUAL TERRORISTS they’ve been releasing.

Murf76 on March 25, 2010 at 6:34 PM

I, too, believe that the nation is in for a time of great suffering for the reason you mention.

Speaking plainly, ban or no ban, I cannot fathom that any kind of violence or overthrow might erupt in this nation over the healthcare bill, and we have let slip the continuing murder of our children… over, and over, and over again.

I hoped that the Tea Parties would make it a central issue – but no, they are fiscal conservatives only, no time for ’social con’ issues. Ed Morrissey, a few days back, mentioned how abortion ought be a second priority to young people in comparison to the financial burdens that will be – and have been – laid upon them by ObamaCare.

Our priorities as a nation are laid bare, and I believe we are going to suffer terribly for that. Nonetheless, I find myself praying for my countrymen, and my country, all throughout the day.

I agree.

Apparently we are still thought of as sheep just lead by a different master(s); lacking in critical thinking skills and easily swayed and incited to riot by the mere mention of extraordinary opposition.

Sad, I thought that only occurred on the left.

Socmodfiscon on March 25, 2010 at 7:03 PM

I think we know that the left wants to hang the “violent” label on us. Not only do we need to make sure the label doesn’t stick, we also need to refuse to allow them to label others as violent.

That’s the most disturbing thing about the warning above. I certainly understand the need for limits, and the fact that we don’t want Hot Air to be taken as a “dangerous” web site. But it almost sounds like you’re giving credence to the accusations. And that is unfortunate.

We need to be very careful that we don’t validate these false accusations implicitly, as some Republicans did when they condemned Tea Party activists for using racial slurs. The problem of course is that there was no evidence that racial slurs were used, but in condemning the racial slurs, they seemed to accept the reports as if they really happened.

The left doesn’t have to smear us individually, if they can smear some of us and imply guilt by association.

Remember the days when dissent was the highest form of patriotism?

Cicero43 on March 25, 2010 at 1:24 PM

There’s dissent, and then there’s cutting the gas line on a Congressman’s propane grill. Of course, the guys trying to intimidate Periello ended up targeting his brother, Bo, by mistake.

Point is, speech doesn’t involve violence.

hawksruleva on March 25, 2010 at 1:32 PM

True. Which leaves me wondering why free speech apparently does involve burning flags and a girl wearing a tux to a high school prom.

I’m glad it doesn’t include violence, though, because I have a sneaky suspicion who the violence would actually be directed against.

tom on March 25, 2010 at 7:34 PM

Liam,

I have to post and run, I’ll check this when I get back.

My question to you is a kind of wondering of how you could say that you would be willing to tolerate (your emphasis)abortion in this nation if it was brought about by a vote of the people as opposed to through the courts?

I read your posts with interest on a fairly regular basis and I am just kind of disappointed to hear such a thing.

Do you not really believe then, that unborn life is sacred and is to be defended and protected no matter how many persons think otherwise? That there are certain absolutes, such as the the sanctity of innocent human life, that should not be violated and should be defended no matter how the decision to abrogate these rights comes about, be it legislatively, judicially or by ballot? I always thought you based your pro-life beliefs in obedience to the Ten Commandments and our nation’s promise of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, and that you couldn’t give a hoot about any majority if they were in the wrong. Am I missing something here? If I have misinterpreted your comment, please forgive me.

tigerlily on March 25, 2010 at 7:39 PM

Perhaps you should light yourself on fire, and see if that sheds some light on the situation.

stefanite on March 25, 2010 at 2:44 PM

Dark-Star on March 25, 2010 at 2:48 PM

Not for a second. The left calls the right violent because it suits their prejudices and makes them feel better about themselves.

tom on March 25, 2010 at 7:45 PM

During the 2008 campaign, did the DNC ever denounce Sandra Bernhard when she publicly stated she hoped “her big black brothers gang-rape Gov Palin”?

TN Mom on March 25, 2010 at 10:07 PM

Here at Hot Air, we don’t tolerate threats of violence against either ourselves, other commenters, or elected representatives, nor do we tolerate calls for the overthrow of the American government by force.

Ed, thanks for saying what unfortunately needed to be said.

I, like many other posters here, was an avid reader of this site long before having the opportunity to post. One of the most intelligent posters at HA (there are many) calls those that embrace this idea the nullification ilk. Hat tip to unclesmrgol.

The nullification ilk truly believe they are protecting the Constitution.

They fail to properly consider the myriad of unintended consequences that will inevitably be put in motion by their foolish actions.

The most obvious consequence is fighting amongst ourselves leaves the front gates unguarded.

A not so obvious consequence is the fact that what they propose literally translates into protecting the rights of some individuals, over those of others.

That does not sound like trying to protect the Constitution to me.
