Cantor: Democrats “dangerously fanning the flames” by screeching about security threats

posted at 12:54 pm on March 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Via The Right Scoop, Rep. Eric Cantor announced that his office has received threats for his positions on issues as well as his Jewish heritage, and that one of his offices had a window shot out. He only spoke out about this to combat the unbalanced reporting of fringe threats against members of Congress. Cantor singled out DCCC chair Rep. Chris van Hollen for exploiting fringe threats for political gain, “fanning the flames” to “dangerous levels.” Cantor declared that “enough is enough,” and implored his colleagues from both parties to let law enforcement handle the threats from the political fringes:

I think Cantor put this very well. Threats of political violence come from the fringes of American debate, and represent no one and no movement except the lunatics who make the threats. The “I’m getting death threats” has become a tired meme in the American media, and a handy way for politicians to avoid the responsible accountability that mainstream Americans demand. And it’s not just Democrats who have indulged in that avoidance strategy in the past, although they’re certainly the culprits of the moment.

Here at Hot Air, we don’t tolerate threats of violence against either ourselves, other commenters, or elected representatives, nor do we tolerate calls for the overthrow of the American government by force. Those who indulge in that behavior will find their commenting privileges revoked without warning. We are a site devoted to engagement in the American political system, not a discussion board for militia movements, plenty of which exist elsewhere for those who want to participate in those discussions. If you choose to violate our terms of service, don’t bother e-mailing when your commenting privileges get revoked, because we’re not going to get into e-mail debates about it.

Update (AP): Cantor’s not the only Republican who’s been threatened recently (and, of course, not so recently). On a related note, here’s a fine short floor speech from Mike Pence. Stop the threats, stop the vandalism — and stop smearing law-abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong.

I don’t think the GOP have a short term strategy, besides knee jerk reaction to whatever narrative/actions the Dims gleefully lay on them daily, let alone a long term one. They play checkers while the commiedems play 3-D chess, and they must be really having fun right about now.

Tigerlily, the “moderates” cannot allow themselves to see the ugly truth about the intentions of the progressives. Why do you think they do everything possible to discredit and marginalize Glenn Beck? That guy has his sh*t together.

Reminds me of the Jews who couldn’t wrap their heads around the full-blown evil of the Nazi’s “final solution.” Otherwise, they wouldn’t have remained where the Nazis could get their hands on them.

You are entirely correct – first, we have to understand their plan. Then we need to outfox them.

The moderates will lose this war for us.

We need to run silent and deep. We need to IGNORE EVERY DEMOCRAT and every accusation and libel they throw at us and do nothing but work and pray like never before to get our people elected in November. They are sucking our energy at will, with alarming and disgusting ease; constantly getting us to react to them, and they only do so with our permission.

The smear machine was set into high gear with the three stooges, Congressemen Frank, Jackson Jr. and Cleaver. They just “had” to walk through a tea party crowd, right? When there is a honeycomb of tunnels from the cong. office bldgs. to the capitol. These ridiculous excuses for “men” were there to put a face to the Left’s smears and slander, and (gasp) against congressmen no less!

In the suburbs of N.W. Chicago, Melissa Bean, known locally as the “abortion queen”, a radical leftist, is planning a public meeting in the near future. Could it be that she will have a couple of “plants” in any conservative crowd that shows up to protest her? And that her agent provocateurs will do something even more outrageous than ever before? And she will get national recognition and continue the government attack on it’s own citizenry?

Patriots, do not give Bean or any of them the time of day. Don’t bother to even acknowledge their existence. It is a waste of time, energy and money that MUST go to our candidates.

What if we just used a little ju jitsu and let their plots and plans roll past us as we act as if they are literally not there? Hearing nothing, seeing nothing, only working night and day for our own to be elected as if these radicals are ghosts and we are the reality, not the other way around? What would it be like (Hot Air would have to become re-election planning central, not “can you believe what the radicals did today?”) to black them out of every blog, conversation and article, and to only communicate the thousands of bits of information and energy needed to close ranks and “transform America” by making sure we throw them all out come November? Can we do it? Yes…..(you know the rest)

I take it, chumplett, you can now provide us proof, that one single instance of threats, towards those that serve the F’ing Retards of society, is true?

Just one.

But, I’ve been around the intertubes once or twice, and I already know that “one” won’t be forthcoming.

That does not sound like trying to protect the Constitution to me.

Allahpundit on March 25, 2010 at 1:29 PM

While you have the power, if not the right, to ban those who’s speech you hate, that doesn’t confer on you absolute moral authority to decide what the Constitution means or how it should be defended. The message I am getting from so many of the commenters is that, while that time may not be now, there may well be a time to put down your pens and take up other implements in defense of liberty. Those you choose to belittle by calling them the “nullification ilk” may likewise consider you and your kind the “ultimate surrender ilk”. There are too many hundreds of thousands of my brothers and sisters buried in too many fields on too many continents to consider your puny words as anything but an insult to their sacrifice.

AP did not make that statement, I did. I stand by them.

While you have the power, if not the right, to ban those who’s speech you hate, that doesn’t confer on you absolute moral authority to decide what the Constitution means or how it should be defended.

I care not whether you spew hate speech from your mouth. You have every right to do so, that is what makes America the greatest country on Earth.

I have every right to either choose to ignore you or tell you that you are wrong.

Ed and AP have every right to kick you out of their house if you spew it within their house, just as I would have every right to kick you out of my house if you spewed it in mine.

The message I am getting from so many of the commenters is that, while that time may not be now, there may well be a time to put down your pens and take up other implements in defense of liberty. .

You will never be defending liberty by putting down your pens and taking up other implements against your fellow citizens. You will be attempting to squash the liberties of your fellow citizens that do not agree with your intepretation of the Constitution.

I do not need to follow your interpretation, I have the words of the Constitution itself.

You honor the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, and your fellow citizens by effecting change of the government through the voting process. If you choose any other implements for effecting this change, your actions will destroy the very Constitution that you claim to protect.

Those you choose to belittle by calling them the “nullification ilk” may likewise consider you and your kind the “ultimate surrender ilk”. There are too many hundreds of thousands of my brothers and sisters buried in too many fields on too many continents to consider your puny words as anything but an insult to their sacrifice. .

You are called the “nullification ilk” because you seek to nullify the very document that you claim to protect. Do you honestly think you can write a better document? You obviously believe you have the right to force your interpretation of said document on your fellow citizens.

I will never surrender to you or anyone else my liberties as a citizen of this great country because of the hundreds of thousands of my brothers and sisters buried in too many fields on too many continents.

It is because of your idea of taking up other implements against your fellow citizens that I consider your puny words as anything but an insult to their sacrifice.

Congratulations, your ODS has officially surpassed all the levels of BDS that the left suffered from.

I’m sure that Ed Morrissey will soon be updating this post to clarify that the bullet that went through Cantor’s office’s window was a random shot into the air that just happened to come down there. It wasn’t intended as a threat to Cantor.

It’s pretty hilarious that the Right Wing is so unhinged that you folks think that extremist violent activity is yawn-worthy, but when the victims mention the activity, they’re “dangerously fanning the flames”. How backward can you be?

I mean, when Al Qaeda threatens the US, is it “dangerously fanning the flames” for news organizations to report the threats? Of course not. So why is this any different?

orange on March 26, 2010 at 12:30 PM

So trash like you, Orange, goes around firing bullets into the air? So tell me, how does a bullet turn on a 90 degree angle, after falling down?

Does a f’ing retard (as Rahm calls your type) like yourself, every ask such questions?

Your surrender to fascism is pathetic but it is your choice.
Good luck with that.

Your desires to forcefully implement your interpretation of the Constitution is pathetic, but that is your choice as well.

It is you that will be needing the luck.
