Report: GOP trying to torpedo Vitter amendment to repeal O-Care?; Update: Dems reject Coburn’s Viagra amendment

posted at 8:59 pm on March 24, 2010 by Allahpundit

Red State has the red siren up. But why?

Senate sources confirm to me this evening that Senator Mitch McConnell and his leadership team are trying to scuttle Republican efforts to force a vote on repeal of the entire health care legislation during the reconciliation process. I’m told reliably that moderate Republican senators who voted against Obamacare in December do not want to vote against it again because it would just be “symbolic”.

I assume the outrage here is due to the squishy RINOs not wanting to piss off blue-staters with another vote on the record against O-Care. I’m skeptical of that — they already bit the bullet in December and the bill hasn’t gotten appreciably more popular since then, so why blink now? — but assuming it’s true, how about patting ‘em on the back for having hung together with the party and sparing them a vote they don’t want to take? Vitter’s amendment accomplishes nothing: Like every GOP proposal offered in tonight’s vote-o-rama, it’s doomed to fail, but unlike most of the others, it won’t even succeed in making Democrats squirm. Coburn had the right idea with the Viagra amendment, as that’s at least potentially useful in attack ads. What does Vitter’s amendment do except remind people that, yes indeed, the Senate still supports the bill that it passed three months ago?

Here’s the full list of amendments, by the way, and here’s the updated roll call on amendments voted on thus far. Nothing yet on the Viagra amendment but that’ll be a golden moment. Consider this an open thread if you’re tuned into C-SPAN2 and following along. A little mood music for you while you watch…

Update: Via AHFF Geoff, let me be the first to say, “Why do Democrats want rapists to have Viagra?”

Democratic Sen. Max Baucus urged his colleagues to defeat the amendment.

“This is a serious bill. This is a serious debate. The amendment offered by the senator from Oklahoma makes a mockery of the Senate, the debate and the American people. It is not a serious amendment. It is a crass political stunt aimed at making 30-second commercials, not public policy,” he said.

Final tally: 57-42. Evan Bayh and Ben Nelson voted with the GOP. (Johnny Isakson isn’t there tonight, so there are only 40 Republicans.)

Fear, intimidation and thuggery are all you lot have left, isn’t it? You are the most pathetic bunch of losers I’ve ever seen.

Shame on Hot Air for ignoring this!

I don’t condone violence at all, but you’re being intellectually dishonest. Fear, intimidation, and thuggery are all that we’ve seen out of the Obama administration, Pelosi and Reid’s Congress, and the media for the past 13 months. If you’d like to live in a People’s Republic, find one, but leave our Constitutional Republic alone.

Democrats kill babies but won’t kill child rapists.

SouthernGent on March 24, 2010 at 10:17 PM

On Randy Neugebauer’s FB page, there are a lot of libs calling his behavior disgusting and saying he should be ashamed of himself (they’re saying a lot worse than that, but you get the idea).

I find this mind-boggling – it’s the crime of the century to say someone (or something, ie the bill) is a baby-killer – but ACTUALLY killing babies? Eh, not so much.

Kay Hagan (D hack-NC) hasn’t voted in the last few times. She doesn’t want to go against her pimp, Chuck Schumer, who payed for her Senate seat, but she won’t go on record as voting to tax medical devices. I expect nothing more from her.

SouthernGent on March 24, 2010 at 10:35 PM

Well, I agree with you. The fact is that the talking points on both sides are totally making the public even more crazy than the process.

It’s time to either calm down and present real reforms that make sense or be silent.

You lose, you lose. We always knew that Dems had the votes. Elections DO have consequences.

OK, so let’s just figure out what to do next, since this bill is truly a mess.

AnninCA on March 24, 2010 at 9:46 PM

I suggest that you look at the list of amendments that Allahpundit has linked. There are many citizens adversely affected by this bad bill. And the middle class is about to take the brunt in the neck.

So you live in Cali for 30 years, need health care. Cali is growing broke, even though you lean liberal. So you move to a conservative state, that’s done well, as a CONSERVATIVE state, for more security, and to get health care, but in the end, would you vote liberal?

Mojave Mark on March 24, 2010 at 10:38 PM

I never thought it would come upon passage of this. I think the economic situation would have to get worse before we start to see open revolt. Unfortunately, I think it will – and in relatively short order. I can’t imagine creating amnesty for 30 million people and guaranteeing them health benefits will be good for the economy.

RobbBond on March 24, 2010 at 10:30 PM

Obamacare is far worse than amnesty because it so directly and radically increases the power of the government, takes a huge chunk of personal freedom away and bankrupts the country. Amnesty is going to be bad in many levels but it is not as radically trans formative as Obamacare.

neuquenguy on March 24, 2010 at 10:38 PM

Yes they have to have republican support. Now I’m not sure how much I trust the republicans but John McCain came out and said they’re not going to vote on any of this. We will see cause Grahmnasty was talking about illegals with the dems.

Brat4life on March 24, 2010 at 10:16 PM
Grahamnesty would be toast in South Carolina if he were to support an immigration bill (not that I’m sure he would care). I live right next to the state and I can tell you they’re already pretty unhappy with him over there.

RobbBond on March 24, 2010 at 10:19 PM

Grahmanasty is not up for re-election until 2014 so unless SC has a recall law he is safe to reach across the isle and slap conservatives across the face for three more years. As for his loverboy McCain if it weren’t for JD Hayworth McCain would be cozying up to the Pinnochio with his mistress Grahmnasty and helpin the dems vote in 30 million constituents for 2010.
JD Hayworth seriously needs to do a money bomb and get rid of the old inarticulate pandering McCain lest he somehow wrest the Publican nomination again or worse try to attach himself to the lovely and gracious Sarah as her veep. yuck! It really hurt to say that.

I left CA for one reason: My cost of living.

It’s just not a good place for me at this point in life. I never understood people who stayed in Detroit, either.

Why not move?

It’s a challenge, of course, but people need to be flexible to live OK, particularly in this day and age.

The other benefit? I’m now living next to family. I was not around family for most of my adult life. Something about my age just really triggered a need to get closer.

I think I’m actually downright typical, boring.

And any amendments will kill the bill, according to the Dems? I don’t get that. If it’s so solid and wonderful, how can it be so flawed–like leaving out coverage for children–and so fragile that changes of any kind will gut it? Why didn’t the Dems get it right the first time?

Look folks, I think I hate this bill just about as much as anyone (well, pretty much) but to me it’s counterproductive to write this defeat off as some sort of sinister plot or underhanded theft. The fact is the American people voted an overwhelming number of Democrats into office in 2008. The beauty of our nation is that we have a chance to counter that by voting an overwhelming number of Republicans into office in 2010. Simple as that.

And now, for all the grandstanding, it seems that some Dem Senators in shaky seats are being allowed to vote against the worst parts of the reconciliation bill (thanks to the Republicans). Might it not have been better to just make them all vote for it – up or down, all of it or none of it – instead of letting some of them say “well I voted against THAT piece of it.”?

jdp629 on March 24, 2010 at 10:46 PM

Good lord. The ammendments are being done on a partisan line. Almost everything the Republicans offer, is rejected, or tabled. They offer tax cuts, and ammendments to cut spending, and all are rejected.

capejasmine on March 24, 2010 at 10:47 PM

When you have an entire class of people willing to vote themselves free things from the government in the majority the country is over, done, through as we know it and will rapidly become a socialist state!

We are dangerously close to that now and add in 30 million illegals and open the borders and we are there!
The Indonesian Community organizer knows it. It has been the plan from day one. A permanent dependent majority voting themselves free stuff from the productive who become slaves to the freeloaders. Pinnochios’ ultimate in reperations, his parties ticket to power forever. He will absolutely try it!

dhunter on March 24, 2010 at 10:47 PM

They also voted a Republican into office in 2009 in Massachusetts and one of the big reasons was to stop this legislation. The reconciliation process was never meant to be used in this manner so I think it is rightly viewed as underhanded theft.

I hope we will see more generalized outrage than we have seen so far. The Democrats might decide to put amnesty on the shelf until after the election to prevent this. On the other hand, if they go ahead with it, the Republicans have to make sure the Dems own all of it as well, which is not a sure thing considering some of the RINOs. If even one Republican votes for it the Dems and the MSM will make sure it is propagandized as a “bi-partisan” bill and we lose all electoral advantage.

At the risk of being pelted with rotten produce, I am inclined to agree with McConnell’s contingent that a move to repeal it now would be pointless. It’s not like the ultimate outcome would be any different and it does run the risk of making us appear obstructionist.

I think our side needs to lay behind the log as they say here in the South and just bide our time. These people will give themselves enough rope to hang themselves eventually. We just need to concentrate on three things: 1) Keeping the less popular provisions of O-care first and foremost in voters’ minds, 2) Fighting amnesty, cap and tax, and whatever other power grabs they have in store before November, and 3) Winning back enough seats to either roll this thing back next year or, at a minimum, hold off funding for it until we can elect a GOP president in 2012 who will not veto a repeal and replace bill.

I just think it’s really important now to choose our battles judiciously. We need to keep our eye on the ball. We lost that battle but we must win this war.

It is precisely because of mandates that health insurance has the problems it has. It’s the same way with the housing crisis. Too much govt was the cause and yet we were led to believe that lack of “regulation” put us in that position. Until Americans are able to fundamentally change the way they think and reconsider the harmful effects of too much govt, we will continue to have crises of these types.

To accept just one Pub amendment would show that the Dems didn’t get everything right since the matter came up for debate 14 months ago, and it might be (ahem!) better to have included Pubs instead of freezing them out for most of the discussions.

Imagine if Pubs voted against something like Megan’s Law or something similar. The Dem cry would be “enabling” of sex offenders by rich white conservatives. Same with this shot-down amendment.

Imagine the stink of just one sex offender, in the future, commits a crime and he was on gov’t-provided Via*ra? Instant Pub talking point! LOL

upinak on March 24, 2010 at 10:57 PM

LET’S JUST FACE THE FACTS PEOPLE…..

Most of the GOP in D.C. WANT the Federal Government to grow larger.

Look at that RINO Man/girl Mitch McConnell. One minute he’s a strong conservative voice willing to stand up to the Libs/Progressives and then the next minute he’s kissing up like a prom date to the Progressives/Marxists in control of Congress.

TRUTH be told the GOP in the Senate hasn’t had cajones since I can’t even remember. Howard Baker? Bob Dole? Trent Lott? McConnell? All squishy get-alongs. You want any sign of cajones on a regular basis you have to go to the HOUSE.

It’s up to us PEOPLE……the permanent leadership/Lords on Capitol Hill will never live up to what we think they should.

We need to educate OURSELVES and take OUR COUNTRY BACK, then when it’s time (Town Halls, or voting booth, or marches, will make our voices heard. LOUDLY but peacefully).

Nice article……….I don’t really see what their point is but oh well. :-)

My own take? They started offering way too many products that were overly tailored. I think that insurance depends upon pools. When you over-tailer, then you’ve got this huge stew of various pools that have to balance.

They “tipped.”

And when they “tipped,” they went right back to industry practices that were old history stuff, like booting people off over minor stuff in the middle of major claims.

It’s been pretty nasty to watch.

I think they aren’t a lot different that mortgage lenders and what happened in that industry.

AnninCA on March 24, 2010 at 10:59 PM

So the liberal witch hunt has begun. The strategy for solidifying the socialist “health care” win is to paint all conservatives as racist menaces to society. To point at conservatives and screech like something out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Looks like up is down and day is night in America nowadays, my friends. Stand strong, folks, I know the pendulum will swing hard against these Marxian demagogues if we keep our nerve, our brains, and our determination to reclaim America from these leftist cretins.

Great point. Really, they’re morphing into the Tory party of the UK. They’re basically a less progressive wing of the Leftist party. That’s why I don’t really understand all the animosity directed towards politicians such as Ron Paul on this site. I mean, say what you want but you can’t accuse him of being for growing the size of govt.

capejasmine on March 24, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Stalin said the death of one is a tragedy but the deaths of millions is a statistic.

The only reason it’s ‘not working’ now is because there’s not enough compassion, or enough money being thrown at the problem. Or parents aren’t minding their children well enough. Or not enough street lights.

The list of excuses for liberals’ failures are limited only by imagination.

The national Repubs cannot repeal this, I fear. We must elect Repubs at every level of government and perhaps the States can get it done. 38 states? for a constituional convention to repeal liberal policy and restablish a country that the founders envisioned.
To give freedom back to the people and reign in Fannie Freedie, the unelected Judiciary and House and Senate. Rewrite the law to take away their automatic pay raises put them on our healthcare and retirement packages and term limit the panderers so that these clowns cannot become panderers and thieves for their too long lives.

1) Keeping the less popular provisions of O-care first and foremost in voters’ minds, 2) Fighting amnesty, cap and tax, and whatever other power grabs they have in store before November, and 3) Winning back enough seats to either roll this thing back next year or, at a minimum, hold off funding for it until we can elect a GOP president in 2012 who will not veto a repeal and replace bill.

I just think it’s really important now to choose our battles judiciously. We need to keep our eye on the ball. We lost that battle but we must win this war.

NoLeftTurn on March 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM

I would add two thing to these priorities:
4) Although they are the opposition and their job is to fight the Dems, find some way to demonstrate leadership and ideas.
5) We must find a way of embarrassing the MSM. They are a major weapon in the Dem arsenal. They have lost a lot of credibility but they still are the main source of news for most of the dumbed-down populace. We need to find new ways to diminish their impact.

This is not just about health insurance. It is government appropriation and centralization. “Health-care” is the most convenient way to do it – anything and everything will relate to health-care, and that way will become purview of the government. The best way to fix the health insurance challenge is to unleash market forces, competition, enterprise. Centralized economy, from each according to his ability, to each according to his need – this is what they have accomplished with this bill. This is why it has to go.

I think that’s been happening for a decade.

People went NUTS over the problem with dogfood and China.

NUTS!

AnninCA on March 24, 2010 at 11:19 PM

Annie, old girl, the multitude of “insurance pools” didn’t “tip”. The insurance industry is one of the most highly regulated industries in the country. Heavy gov’t regulation had the usual effect, rapidly rising costs, detachment of the customer from the actual costs of products/services. Now to remedy that we have even more gov’t regulation, and this is designed to finally put the industry out of business. Then we get single-payer because, well, those mean old companies insurance pools “tipped” and they can’t provide cost-effective service, so in steps the ever-so-efficient gov’t.

Please, Ann, take your “concern” elsewhere. Yes, I know, I know. You’re totally open and honest and well, you just like to post your “thoughts” here because it helps you think things through.

Why, we here at Hotair are privileged to get to know the “real” you. One that even your family doesn’t truly know. All is well. Everything will work itself out, so we shouldn’t go worrying our pretty little right-wing heads over this ObamaCare thing. It’s all ok. Just calm down. Listen to Ann’s words. Soothing. Calm…..

wadikitty on March 24, 2010 at 11:19 PM

I think that it will settle down. Then, we’ll find out what people really like and don’t like.

Some of that will also not be plausible. You can’t have insurance reform without the mandates, I’m afraid.

It’ll sort out.

AnninCA on March 24, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Ann, I don’t quite agree with that. I think we know what the people don’t like about this bill. I just don’t think the process playing out today is helping anything, and it could hurt those who would like to fuel distaste for the bill.

It’s possible to reform insurance without a mandate, but it’s not easy to allow people to buy insurance only after they are diagnosed with a serious illness without some sort of mandate or subsidy. In my view, the problem with health insurance (to the extent there are problems) comes from too much regulation, not too little. I don’t think any health insurance policy can be offered anywhere in the United States without being reviewed and accepted by a state insurance regulation board. Yet the President would have us believe that the insurance companies are robbing people blind and cheating them on these contracts every day of the week. Whose fault is that? The insurance companies or the state regulatory boards who supervise their products?

But, as far as I can tell, that discussion has never happened in this debate. It’s been argued in the press as though “the insurance companies do whatever they want; too bad there’s not some governmental control over their products.” You’d hardly have guessed that there is already government control over their products. Why do they continue to get more and more expensive? One reason is that the government control agencies continue to glob more and more unnecessary crap onto the policies. It’s almost as if people would be surprised that their cable television bills became more expensive when some governmental agency required all providers to carry every channel imaginable – whether the viewer wanted them or not.

I live in a suburban town in Ohio, about halfway between Cleveland and Akron. You know how many cable TV providers I can choose from? One. You know how many health insurance companies I can choose from? Neither do I, but it’s a lot more than one.

The industry got so messed up. The practices were just plain wild over the past 5 years.

Something had to give.

AnninCA on March 24, 2010 at 10:53 PM

The “industry” (I presume that you mean the health insurance “industry”) became “messed up” when state regulatory board kept adding mandates to the coverage. The price of insurance had to keep up with all of the claims for procedures that never should have been part of basic insurance. Good grief, woman. Your thinking isn’t very deep, is it?

Now the federal government wants to cover every contingency in health care with mandated insurance and promise that the costs will be contained? On what planet? The one where being a woman is a “pre-existing condition”?

Let’s face it, the idea isn’t that costs will be contained. It’s that costs will spiral out of control leading to the complete govt takeover. Their objectives are pretty transparent.

Not in the Soviet Union. Pulled 2 books off my shelf tonight- “The First Socialist Society” and “Stalin, Triumph and Tragedy”

They starved in the countryside as any food that was grown was forced to go to the cities while Stalin told everyone that the country folk were dining on wine and steak.

As the people who knew who to run factories were imprisoned or left the people who took over tried running equipment they didn’t have the skills for- and the new management was rounded up for “wrecking” when things fell apart.

When our medical businesses/hospitals etc close because there is no profit in it and the government sends in people who don’t know how to run the health industry – that is the world we will fall into.

Have friends in the healthcare field and they say that this is already happening (and drives up cost) because what passes one state/federal inspection would fail another so they spend time redoing computer work etc between each different inspection.

When you have an entire class of people willing to vote themselves free things from the government in the majority the country is over, done, through as we know it and will rapidly become a socialist state!

No.

Remember: Economies don’t collapse-Governments do. The one thing that is NOT sustainable over a long period of time is socialism. Why? Because it depends on the process you described above.

Why come to the U.S. to get your money stolen when you can take it to India and invest it in a free market run by increasingly free men?
