Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on March 24, 2010 by Allahpundit

“If I were a member of Congress, my floor speech before casting a yes vote would have boiled down to:

Gee, I hope this works.

“One of the astonishing aspects of the health-care debate is how little is actually known about the implications of a change this far-reaching. Everyone has a theory, and a model to match, but even some of the most fundamental questions remain the subject of debate.”

***
“What measurements can we look at? First, it’s worth enumerating what, exactly, the goals of health care reform were, as articulated by Obama and the Democrats. One was to protect families from financial instability and possible bankruptcy due to medical bills. Obama also argued that reform would make Americans healthier and save lives. Finally, reform was supposed to help rein in the country’s spiraling health care costs and keep the nation from sinking deeper into debt—although you could argue that this was really more of a selling point than an original goal of reform.

“The problem with these numbers, as with any real-world economic measurement, is that there’s no control. Medical bankruptcies may eventually go down, but they might have gone down anyway, thanks to a rebounding economy. Americans might get healthier, but education and anti-obesity efforts might have made them healthier anyway. Despite the Obama administration’s penchant for citing “jobs created or saved,” no such measurement exists…

“Health care reform may be a decisive political victory for Democrats. It could even become as popular as Medicare, which soared in the polls once implemented, despite the fear-mongering that surrounded it. But that’s different from saying it will be a quantifiable policy success. ‘We won’t lack data,’ says Karen Davenport of the Center for American Progress. ‘But we might have some disagreements.’”

***
“Hours after the bill passed, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs set the talking points: ‘[I]f people want to campaign on taking tax cuts away from small businesses, taking assistance away from seniors getting prescription drugs, and want to take away a mother knowing that their child can’t be discriminated against by an insurance company … we’ll have a robust campaign on that,’ he said at the Monday briefing…

“Gibbs on Tuesday trumpeted a Gallup/USA Today poll that showed 49 percent approval and 40 percent disapproval* of the health-care law.

“‘This will give the nattering nabobs of negativity something to chew on,’ Gibbs – channeling former Maryland Governor and Vice President Spiro Agnew – said on his Twitter feed, linking to the poll results.”

***
“‘I’ve said if passing this bill means I have to walk out of my office that night, it would be with the greatest pride,’ Pelosi told ‘Newshour with Jim Lehrer’ in an interview to air this evening.

“‘But I haven’t any intention of losing the Democratic majority,’ the speaker added. ‘It’s too important to the country; it’s too important to the lives of the American people. We are there for them.’”

Switzerland? I’d love that! Everyone gets a government-issued fully automatic military rifle and the training to use it effectively.

No, you wouldn’t.

Ever seen a public shooting range in Switzerland? You have to chain the rifle down at your bench and shoot towards the target through a long 3′ diameter tube, all because they are afraid someone might decide to spray the crowd. The chain restricts how far you can move the gun. Then when you’re done shooting, the range-master comes by to unlock your gun for you. Super lame.

Then of course there is the price of ammo there. Don’t get me started.

John J. Miller had this terrific squib at “The Corner.”

Rep. Artur Davis, Democrat of Alabama, is black. He also voted against the health-care bill, both last year and this year. The Washington Post seems to think that a black congressman shouldn’t commit the apostasy of “distancing himself from the biggest legislative achievement of the first black president.” Forget the merits of the issue: It’s a black thing and Davis should get with the program.

“I vigorously reject the insinuation that there is a uniquely ‘black’ way of understanding an issue, and I strongly suspect that most Alabamians will as well,” says Davis, who is running for governor.

Good for him. Shame on the Washington Post for thinking this is some kind of controversy

TXMomof3 on March 25, 2010 at 12:39 AM

It is hardly surprising that Americans are feeling a growing panic as they watch their constitutional republic descend into a banana republic.

President Obama is fond of quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s line that “we should be the change we want to see.” But Gandhi also said that “civil disobedience becomes a sacred duty when the state has become lawless and corrupt.” Americans instinctively understand this which is why pockets of resistance to ObamaCare are already emerging. The question is only whether they can be constructively harnessed into a grassroots, Gandhi-style civil disobedience movement powerful enough to undo this monstrosity.

Any strategy of nonviolent civil resistance has to first make a good faith effort to achieve its end through the available political and legal means. But there comes a time when changing the law requires acts of conscience.

For opponents of ObamaCare that time is Dec. 31, 2013. That’s when the individual mandate will go into effect. If ObamaCare hasn’t been repealed by Congress or nullified in court by then, its opponents would be justified in urging Americans to refuse to buy coverage or pay fines and dare authorities to come after them.

To this end, the perpetrators of ObamaCare must be defeated in November and 2012. But right now it is entirely appropriate for Senate Republicans to stall the reconciliation process as much as possible. They are right in calling every point of order that they can–if only to call attention to the bill’s manifest corruption. Likewise, the 30-plus states that are issuing sovereignty resolutions and exploring ballot initiatives that would protect their residents from Uncle Sam’s coverage diktat are on the right track. Even if these efforts are ultimately thrown out in court because federal law trumps state law, they will make a powerful statement against the coercive nature of ObamaCare.

But that reign of terror of yours will someday come to an end
Hey woman, you lie until you’ve dug yourself way into the ground
The truth way beyond recognition you do bend

E-evil woman, e-evil woman, e-evil woman, evil woman

That’s a dead end road that leads to you know where
So you just make whatever hay you can between here and there
There’s a hole in your soul where all the abusing and lying comes from
Soon you’ll be scrambling to get out of town like a bum

E-evil woman, e-evil woman, e-evil woman, evil woman

Ha ha woman its a crying shame
But when you finally get your just deserts you’ll have no one else to blame

E-evil woman, e-evil woman, e-evil woman, evil woman

Here’s what inspired me last Tuesday and Saturday when the Code Red / Tea Party citizens descended on the House Offices “to petition their Government for redress of grievances”: we were citizens, not paid lobbyists, and our message was simple stop the insane spending and respect the Constitution. We weren’t there looking for handouts or goodies for our district. We see the yawning chasm of debt that will swallow our economy, ourselves, and our descendents’ future. We are asking you, our representatives who continue to spend and dispense favors as though they were put in office to be Santa Claus, to stop it – stop it immediately. You are the worst sort of pushers. You foster dependency and crush the desire within each person to be responsible citizens, free to make our own choices in the Republic that this nation’s Founders established over two centuries ago. If you think you were elected to tear it down because “you know better”, then we will work vigorously, within the system, to vote you out of office. I am willing to return to keep this message before them and I met so many others who feel the same way. We must win this, we can win this and, God willing, we will win this. We surrounding them and they work for us.

Over hill, over dale,
We must stop Herr Obama from swinging America by the tail,
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Counter march! Right about!
Hear those protesters shout
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along

To the front, day and night
Where the constitutionalists against Herr Obama dig and fight
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Our barrage will be there
Fired on the rocket’s flare
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along

With the liberty loving blogs, boot to boot
We will join in Herr Obama’s pursuit
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Action front, at a trot
Volley fire with shell and shot
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along

Should the foe penetrate
Ev’ry conservative gunner for Herr Obama lies in wait
And those Caissons Go Rolling Along
Fire at will, lay ‘em low
Never stop for any foe
While those Caissons Go Rolling Along

But if fate me should call
And in action against Herr Obama I should fall
Keep those Caissons a rolling Along
Then in peace I’ll abide
When I take my final ride
On a Caisson that’s Rolling Along

For it’s “Hi! Hi! Hee!
In the Defeat Herr Obama Artillery
Call off your numbers loud and strong
And where e’er we go
You will always know
That those Caissons Are Rolling Along

They were completely caught off guard by the Tea Party and our Framing of the Health-Care Debate. They got Health-Care passed so they got momentum. But I believe they have failed utterly the test of the Power of Persuasion so now they are going to use the Persuasion of Power as Andy Stern puts it.

It is going to get Rougher for us. I really think Civilized Disobedience and Debate is the best route right now.

I like this paragraph:

The prerequisites for any movement’s success are credible leaders and a moral high ground. The first means that opponents of ObamaCare cannot–cannot–let Mitt Romney come within sniffing distance of their cause. He is trying to position himself at the forefront of the Repeal ObamaCare movement to further his presidential ambitions. But he couldn’t be a worse spokesman given that as governor he was responsible for implementing a universal coverage program in the Bay State that is identical in every essential respect to ObamaCare, including the individual mandate. He has to be banished from every anti-ObamaCare panel, podium and platform lest the movement be accused of partisanship and hypocrisy.

Lots of Presidents did things at the State Level that they did not do at the Federal Level, Coolidge being a good example.

Looks like poor Mr. Romney may be finished in politics. He is pretty smart though and your kids have suggested to me that we let him join us in our new bank robbing gang. Your kids are getting 10% so we all figure that’s what we will offer him.

I understand your point and I really don’t trust Romney, he has that same slimy feel as Obama.

But he pursued it at the State Level, where matters such as that should belong and state options are constrained by the Federal Government.

He can pursue a different Health-Care policy as President involving Tort Reform, Ryan’s entitlement plan, breaking the State Monopolies and other policies designed to would free up the States, Employers and Private Citizens.

But I don’t trust him.
