Poll: 79% fear U.S. economy could collapse
posted at 8:18 pm on March 23, 2010 by Allahpundit
Imagine how grim the numbers would be if ObamaCare hadn’t solved the problem of rising health-care costs.
The latest Fox News poll finds that 79 percent of voters think it’s possible the economy could collapse, including large majorities of Democrats (72 percent), Republicans (84 percent) and independents (80 percent).
Just 18 percent think the economy is “so big and strong it could never collapse.”
Moreover, 78 percent of voters believe the federal government is “larger and more costly” than it has ever been before, and by nearly three-to-one more voters think the national debt (65 percent) is a greater potential threat to the country’s future than terrorism (23 percent)…
Three in 10 American voters (30 percent) say they are comfortable with the size and role of the federal government right now, while 65 percent say the government has become too big and “is restricting American freedoms.”
Sizable majorities of Republicans (84 percent) and independents (74 percent) think the government is too big, while just over half of Democrats (51 percent) are okay with the size of government.
Eh. This is irresistible as a talking point against The One, but after the financial crisis, 10% unemployment, and now the daily spectacle in Greece, how useful is a poll where the choice is between “it’ll never collapse” and “it could”? More interesting are the numbers on size of government. This is another reason why I don’t worry about that Gallup poll showing a bounce for O-Care: Ultimately, the warm and fuzzies being felt at the thought of insuring the uninsured will run head-first into anxiety about government bloat, unless Democrats can come up with a way to argue that a massive new federal entitlement is somehow going to shrink government too. They try, sort of — there’s a reason Orszag was so wedded to the talking point that ObamaCare will bend the curve — but eventually they’ll either raise taxes and anger that 65 percent or not raise taxes and anger them by driving up the deficit. Although, given the sheer magnitude by which this thing could overshoot cost estimates, I suppose higher taxes and higher deficits are possible. But the upside? ObamaCare just might bring about peace in the Middle East. Seriously!
For your viewing pleasure, here’s Reason TV interviewing an economics professor whose skepticism about Keynes clearly marks him as a racist.

You hit an interesting point Pelayo.
No matter what the currency is, be it dollar, gold, or cheeseburgers, it is only “worth” what someone is willing to give you for it.
Today at my business I accept your dollar in exchange for my service, because I know that someone else will give me a dollar’s worth of what *I* want for it.
Gold, the last ditch currency, assumes that there will actually be something left resembling a civilized market. Although I suppose, even in near ruins, you could make a case for the value of the gold itself, conductivity, strength, etc, and those properties that might make it useful to make something.
Still, there has to be SOMEthing that everyone generally agrees on is the actual baseline standard. Personally, in todays world I think it’s oil more than gold, but the gold is actual money and not just a commodity.

I haven’t wanted terrible things to happen to a group of people this badly since 9/11.

Seven Percent Solution on March 23, 2010 at 9:12 PM
Well 80% of the US lives in cities. If you have to flee to the countryside, what can you carry with you that will still have some value as an exchange medium? Cities start starving within a week if food shipments are stopped. Gold has had value in all societies throughout history.
Firearms/ammo will be the most valued item in existence if a collapse of civilization occurs. You cannot eat them either though you can hunt with them. A package of fishhooks and nylon line will come in real handy too.

Meh. You can make a pretty dang decent blowgun from a 3-4 foot length of steel pipe (pvc bends too much), bike spokes, and masking tape. Made one myself; good for nailing small game up to rabbit-size and an effective ‘go away’ message to deer, coons, stray cats…and 2-legged intruders.

Gee Allah, how much higher deficits than 1.4 TRILLION dollars and taxes above 40% do you really think most of us need to be crushed under the weight of taxes and a shrinking dollar value? My folks lived through the Great Depression. Since there wasn’t an external threat to the country then, they could concentrate on getting themselves a job and surviving off the land. I’m with Honda V65 about the likely external threats now: China (200 million young men without a mate, Russians who love to make mischief while America is busy elsewhere, and 1.4 Billion Muslims who hate America and would love nothing better than to bomb us and take over every business we own, like the Gazans took over the abandoned Israeli settlements when they pulled out).
You can avoid going to war with them while you concentrate on the home front and let them swallow the rest of the world, but once you come out of the Depression, who is left to ally with? Europe will be gone and Japan will survive only because it is an island. Our military will be defenestrated because Obamacare will have bankrupted the defense account and our ships and planes will be wrecks who can barely get to sea or up in the air to meet any mild threat. There won’t be submarines or strategic bombers to handle distant threats, and the ballistic missiles will be treatied away as he is doing right now. All our bases overseas will be gone due to budget cuts. And the successors to Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia (China and the Muslim World) will be stronger than we can recover from. At that point, barring the return of Christ or nuclear war, it is game over, son.
And you and Ed are naive in the extreme to feel the situation isn’t this dire. Chaos and Entropy always expand in the universe, and it is with the barest of intelligent edge that Mankind keeps from spinning off into all out natural collapse anyway. You constantly downplay any possibility of things getting to the worst case and won’t tolerate discussions early of what happens if it does. For some PC reason.
It takes money and organization to keep the peace and advance civilization. Our “leadership” just voted to spend every dime we make on keeping Grandma alive and keeping a bureaucracy paid and leeching off the children who were going to take care of Grandma in a better fashion than the bureaucrats who never met her and could give two sh*ts if she is breathing tomorrow as long as they get my money and spend every defense dollar on something besides protecting us.
I think you totally underestimate the threat and are stifling any possible thinking outside the box to stop the Chaos before we are left with only the worst case solutions. You don’t take strident speech off the table and expect to win against charlatans who don’t care what we say, and never will as long as they achieve greater power to protect themselves at our expense, and demonize the crap out of anyone who disagrees with them (and the press is complicit with their agenda because they have been brainwashed by glamour and celebrity to agree Dhimmicrats are so smart we shouldn’t cross them).
I think your comment policies have gotten pretty PC and restrictive in the face of ever increasing evidence of World War II history repeating itself.

Agree with you. I’ve lived in the South for going on 10 years now. I like it, but I had always lived in cities before, and grew up in the Northeast, so I was always planning on returning either to New York or Los Angeles. After the last couple of years tho, I’m pretty ready to just stay put. Build my house with the giant pantry and the safe room in the basement and just get prepared. I have never picked up a gun in my life; this summer my best friend is taking me with her to a CCP class. My brother is an ex-police officer and recommends just having a shotgun around for protection, but I would like to learn how to shoot something I can carry on my person.
I’ve also been wanting to learn for years how to grow a vegetable garden, so I may do that this summer as well. At a minimum, I’m going to grow my own tomatoes since I could live on them alone, and I’ve been wanting to learn to can my sauce and and my salsa anyway, so it will be a useful skill to have. I’m not much of a meat eater so if it ever comes to living off the land, I guess I’ll have to know how to do these things, and maybe have some goats for milk and cheese, and chickens for eggs. Both are permitted in the city limits here.
Anyway, if it comes to the r-e-v-o-l-u-t-i-o-n, I’ll be happy to be as close as I am to Texas because when liberty takes root again in a new nation, I know Texas will be at the heart of it. So to our friends in Texas, if we ever get to that point, please don’t forget to annex what currently is Arkansas! We have many natural resources to offer, lots of God-fearing, liberty-loving types, and plenty of entrepreneurs to help with the rebuilding. Thank you! Love, NoLeftTurn ;o)

Let me see… $1.7 trillion deficit that includes tax revenue from ObamaCare and Cap ‘n Tax…. $2 trillion of treasuries that MUST BE rolled over this year (as they are coming due)… we have to sell $3.7 trillion of new treasuries THIS YEAR. Won’t happen. The comment about “nationalizing” 401k’s and there is also rumor that money market funds might be required to be “invested” in treasuries are simply attempts to get the cash without printing it.
Clearly, this train is headed for a bridge that doesn’t exist.

18% think the economy is so strong that it “could never” collapse?
Those are Democrat elected legislators and public employee union members.

Gold, schmold. Lead will be the metal of exchange in the event that Commie Obammie succeeds with his Cloward-Piven plan. Have gun, eat liberals. I won’t go hungry……

Taxes are already at their effective maximum. Raising taxes slows the economy to the point that the new taxes bring little, if any new money.

Sorry to nitpick. That’s secede*. Been studying the War Between the States a lot over my already too extended life. Probably good preparation for what’s ahead.
Now I know how Robert E Lee felt.

And lets not forget the obvious… you can defend what little you do have!

Gold is a scarce resource, easily carried, that doesn’t corrode (diminish) over time.
However, if everything REALLY goes to hell and a handbasket, ammo (with a sufficient delivery system) will be the important asset to have on hand.
