Meet Bart Stupak’s Republican challenger

posted at 8:18 pm on March 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

He’s got a donation page now, his Facebook site is humming with 16,000 fans and counting, and he’s suddenly getting calls from the RNC. And yet.

Benishek, who has never run for office, doesn’t have a campaign Web site (for now, a Facebook page that has increased from 700 to 14,000 followers will do) or staff for that matter (his wife is taking press calls while he searches for a campaign manager). But by late last night, the RNC had stepped in and set up a PayPal account for him so he could raise money online.

“I didn’t have an online way to get any money, so they were all upset with me. But I got something up finally late last night and I don’t know, it’s just been unbelievable, the support,” Benishek said. “I’m not sure if it’s support for me or just hatred for Bart Stupak. But a lot of people saw what I stood for on Facebook, at least, and seemed to connect with that, with my bio and position statement, so I was overwhelmed by the support.”…

Benishek concedes he has got his work cut out for him, as he’s just getting started introducing himself to the voters. “The people have to vote for me,” he explained. “Not the people who write me and say stuff about me on the blogs in Arizona … I certainly appreciate that and I certainly appreciate the financial help, but I have to still communicate with the constituents here.”

Benishek said it’s been “daunting” because he’s “been getting a lot of advice from people, contradictory advice.” “So that’s been a little bit of a problem. I don’t know exactly how to proceed. I just have to give it my best judgment and move forward,” he said.

I wish him all the luck in the world but … he sounds green, even by the standards of first-time candidates. Stupak may be a fraud and/or a chump but he’s a savvy enough pol to have had the media eating out of his hand during his months-long “will I or won’t I?” kabuki. The district does lean slightly Republican, according to the Cook Report, but Stupak’s won every general election there since 1992 by double digits and the last seven by no less than 19 points. Even with the new scrutiny and his pro-life betrayal, he’ll be tough to beat, and yet Benishek didn’t think to hire staff or lay the groundwork for a Stupak “sellout” narrative — or even open a PayPal account! — while all the abortion sturm and drang was going on. The Daily Caller piece makes it sound like he’s running on a lark, which is fine and fun (so is Mickey Kaus, for instance) but perhaps something to weigh when deciding whether to send him your money. Presumably the RNC’s weighing right now whether he’s got enough of a shot that it’s worth sending people up there to help him. Keep an eye on them to see how serious they are about him before getting your hopes up. Or don’t. It’s your money.

Exit question: Remember how, every two years, the righty blogosphere would get all excited about whoever was challenging Jack Murtha and then inevitably he or she would get crushed? Just asking.

Scott Brown was pretty unknown as well…

d1carter on March 22, 2010 at 8:36 PM

Not just pretty unknown but virtually completely unknown. He had like $4K iirc at the end of the primary. Scott did what he did in less than 1 month and now we’ve got some conservatives using their mega-phones to actually dissuade people from giving this guy money because he’s new to all this. I guess some really don’t believe in the citizens legislature, new blood stuff we all claim is the real solution to Washington.

Yeah, Okay Allah. A man who fits the model of a citizen statesman, as personified by our founding fathers, rises up to take a stand and you pour a truckload of despair on him.

That is a ballsy stance coming from a guy who protects his identity like a nun protects her virtue.

Most of us would give him one sentence of caution and devote the rest of the post to the courage he shows that we clearly do not have.

csdeven on March 22, 2010 at 8:55 PM

Caution is always good….but perhaps this man is a butterfly waiting to unfold, and perhaps this is exactly the kind of man Washington needs. Or woman for that matter. Enough with the career politicians. Maybe some fresh new , unadulterated blood is what D.C. and this country needs.

capejasmine on March 22, 2010 at 8:24 PM

Well, it’s clear to me from his FB page that man is honest. At this point, that sounds mighty compelling.

JusDreamin on March 22, 2010 at 8:55 PM

I think it’s a mistake to make Stupak the flashpoint for our anger. As much as we’d like to see him end his career in politics in November, we have more important stuff to do than just be vindictive

I agree… but the ball at least needs to be rolling for an attempt… and this guy needs seed capital in order to get introduced to the voters… and if the polling ever gets close then he can be pumped cash…

this guy doesn’t seem like the vindictive type at all unlike some of his new found fans…

this guy needs a coach though… someone who can show

Words of advice to Benishek… don’t run on abortion… but exactly run away from it either… don’t make pronouncements or accusations against Stupak… just use his own words against him…

There may be one significant difference between this race and the Murtha race (apologies if this has already been offered.)

Stupak surely pulled a a lot of Republican votes in this marginally Republican district due to his past standing as a Pro-Life candidate. He can’t rely on that any longer. Murtha, on the other hand, certainly will not win in November regardless of how much more Murtha-money will be funneled to his district.

BKeyser on March 22, 2010 at 9:01 PM

I would rather a stray dog be voted into any office where the incumbent voted for healthcare. It is time to vote every one of these bastards out no matter what. The surest way for this country to fail is to allow these scumbags to keep their jobs.

Just saying. I do believe the game has changed. Stupak has confirmed that the dems are the party of death reguardless of the lipservice that some have given about being prolife. This goes way beyond Murthas preceived corruption and strikes home with those that can now see that they have been decieved.

Before today he didn’t have any reason to believe he had a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. If Stupak had actually stood up to Obamacare, he’d have been a hero and a sure seat. That all changed overnight. He’ll get a campaign together lickity split, and I think he’ll have a real chance to win.

John DeWitt bemoaning the problems of not choosing representatives annually:

The nature of the thing will admit of none. Nay, you give them the power to prescribe the mode. They may invest it in themselves.-If you choose them yourselves, you must take them upon credit, and elect those persons you know only by common fame. Even this privilege is denied you annually, through fear that you might withhold the shadow of control over them. In this view of the System, let me sincerely ask you, where is the people in this House of Representatives?

Yes, where is the common citizen in the House of Representatives? There is a steep price for not having deep representation, which means more populous representation, within the House – you get those distant from you who seek to insulate themselves from you and use the power of the House to sinecure themselves into permanency.

Heaven forbid we choose men based on common fame, known to his friends and neighbors… can’t have that in America, now, can we?

ajacksonian on March 22, 2010 at 9:15 PM

I much prefer the Morrissey guy (not the lead singer of the Smiths). Like Frum, Allah doesn’t understand context. In Norse mythology, Loki [aka, Allahpundit] is known as a trickster. He is described in the Prose Edda as a “contriver of fraud”. Although he doesn’t appear often in the Eddas, he is generally described as a member of the family of Odin [aka, Michelle Malkin's clan]. Despite his divine or demi-god status, there’s little evidence to show that Loki [aka, Allahpundit] had a following of worshippers of his own [not even Meagan McCain to his utter dismay]; in other words, his job was mostly to make trouble for other gods, men, and the rest of the world.

Loki [aka, Allahpundit] is known for bringing about chaos and discord, but by challenging the gods, he also brings about change. Without Loki’s [aka, Allahpundit] influence, the gods may become complacent, so Loki [aka, Allahpundit] does actually serve a worthwhile purpose.

Hmmm…You would think that Nancy Pelosi would be proud to hold a Town Hall Meeting to tell us all how great the health reform she just forced on us is.

But I don’t think Nancy Pelosi likes her constituents. The last Town Hall Meeting she held in San Francisco was in January 2006.

If Allah thinks this guy sounds green, is there a color to describe Stupak?

mobydutch on March 22, 2010 at 9:42 PM

How bout puce? I’ve always wanted to use that color-word, puce, in a sentence. there now I did it….twice.

kringeesmom on March 22, 2010 at 9:53 PM

That is completely uncalled for and not the way we roll around here…

CCRWM on March 22, 2010 at 9:44 PM

Cut it out! Cut it out! I’m an honest farmer! I’m innocent of any… .. The picture on that wanted poster doesn’t even look like me.

But I don’t think Nancy Pelosi likes her constituents. The last Town Hall Meeting she held in San Francisco was in January 2006.

wren on March 22, 2010 at 9:45 PM

Oh come on, you can’t expect the Queen to mix it up with the unwashed masses.

Marybeth on March 22, 2010 at 9:55 PM

That is a ballsy stance coming from a guy who protects his identity like a nun protects her virtue.

This has probably been posted, but Buckley is supposed to have said he’d rather have 535 random names out of the Boston phone book running the country than our current scoundrels. I’d rather it be the Lubbock phone book, but even the Boston one would be much better. This guy seems to be of that ideal.

bikermailman on March 22, 2010 at 10:00 PM

You know what AP? We’ve had it up to here with professional “it’s my turn” politicians. We’ll approach new candidates with due caution, but common sense trumps all that spiffy career pol polish. Look how well our current set of pro pols has served us.

I can’t guarantee that won’t happen, but I can say that I do believe somewhat in karma. The man blatantly used a noble position (that of saving the life of an unborn child) for his own political benefit. Something tells me that won’t play well with the electorate.

By the way, since Allah felt the need to point out the Murtha situation, I wonder why he wouldn’t point out a situation in which a relatively green politician had been successful in knocking off a controversial politician.

Only when he’s in San Francisco. :p

bikermailman on March 22, 2010 at 10:02 PM

I am not a constituent of Mr. Stupak but I am in total agreement with Allah’s remark about him playing the media. He did better then that, he played the country. The end result is that instead of looking like someone wrestling with a moral dilemma he looks like a an attention whore. I will be happy to donate to his opponent.

Cindy Munford on March 22, 2010 at 10:02 PM

mobydutch:Why yes,its a light shade of Sh*t Brindle Brown!:)

canopfor on March 22, 2010 at 10:06 PM

Not just pretty unknown but virtually completely unknown. He had like $4K iirc at the end of the primary.

Not quite. Brown was anything but green. He had been a State Senator for quite a while and was a seasoned politician. Mitt Romney gave him the Romney campaign team, which he wouldn’t do unless he knew the guy or Brown had endorsements. Brown also explored the idea of running with John McCain prior to making a decision, and McCain helped him.

This guy is much more like Doug Hoffman who made mistake after mistake, but still came within 5000 votes because the antipathy to Scozzafava was so strong. If Hoffman had been a better candidate as well as jumped into the ring earlier, he might have won. No harm done, hopefully he learned a lot and he’s coming back for a rematch this year.

YehuditTX on March 22, 2010 at 10:06 PM

The guy just announced he was running only last week, so give him a break for being green.

With the level of donations he has coming in, he should be able to hire an experienced campaign manager fairly soon. His public image will get a makeover, and his message will get out in short order, I’m sure.

Exactly. This is why Allah has shown himself to be completely out of touch. The times are different. This legislation is drastic and far-reaching. I am a big believer in gleaning what we can from history, but this situation is pretty unprecedented when it comes to this era’s voters and it certainly doesn’t replicate any of the scenarios in which Murtha was reelected. This is also why I dislike the Alf Landon analogy on repeal. The political conscious of the American people is more awakened now than at any other point in my lifetime and we are going to reach the tipping point here soon economically.

I’d like to hear some people run with self imposed term limits, not treating it like a career.

TheVer on March 22, 2010 at 10:21 PM

LOL, Allah back to being an extreme pessimist.

2010 will be 1994 to the nth power.
Seats like Stupak’s will easily fall.
Mark my words.

Norwegian on March 22, 2010 at 10:23 PM

I own a business in Stupak’s district. Stupak has won since 1992 because he is pro-gun and has managed every election to get his name listed as the pro-life candidate on all the little information sheets that get handed out in the small towns in northern Michigan and the UP. His district is fiercely pro-life, so they voted for him because he was pro-life. He abandoned his his pro-life principles yesterday, which has pissed off many pro-life groups. This changes things dramatically.

No, no. You’re wrong. It’s just like the Jack Murtha reelection campaigns.

How’ve we done by electing the savvy politician, again?

NavyspyII on March 22, 2010 at 8:57 PM

Ultimate win, NavyspyII. I’d rather have a handful of brown, digested foodstuffs than ANYONE who’s in there right now.

HAnthonyWayne on March 22, 2010 at 10:26 PM

A citizen-statesman sounds pretty good right about now. This guy reminds me of Richard Behney, Indiana’s citizen-statesman (RichardBehney.com) Richard started the Indiana TEA Party movement with 0 political experience-he was busy raising his family, running a business and paying bills and taxes. We have had ENOUGH of career politicians and political retreads. Time for citizens to take back the political process, read bills before they sign them, and listen to the folks back home who elected them. Benishek and Behney will do fine. Inexperience is easily fixed.

indypat on March 22, 2010 at 10:29 PM

True. But, there is hope in that arena. The GOP seems to be putting Ryan, Pence, and Cantor out there more. They would be wise to continue that policy. Hopefully, Rubio comes onboard and shakes up the old guard as well.

RobbBond on March 22, 2010 at 10:30 PM

There is a pro-life woman in this race as well, but she was so stupid…
she came out with a blog post the other day critical of Sarah Palin and questioning Sarah’s pro-life credentials… how stupid can you be? Sarah Palin not a strong pro-life person? On top of that, it turns out she is a strong Ron Paul supporter.
But, how stupid can you be? Taking a shot at Sarah Palin on abortion.
Nuts, simply nuts.
So, we have a green candidate in this guy and a pro-life woman who thinks Palin is not a true pro-lifer… what a choice.

PhilipJames on March 22, 2010 at 10:32 PM

I was skeptical, but I think this guy is solid. He’s smart, has common sense, he’ll get up to speed real quick.

karlant on March 22, 2010 at 10:32 PM

I heard him on Mark Levin today. No he wasn’t dynamic, but he was sincere. He decided to get into this race for the right reasons. He was mad at the waste in the stimulus bill and that no one read it before they voted on it. Yeah he was green but there is a primary in August and he was just getting started. All the attention caught him by surprise. We will see.
