Limbaugh: We’ll remember in November

posted at 6:03 pm on March 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

By popular request, via the Right Scoop, a shot of espresso for your post-ObamaCare hangover from the man whom David Frum blames for having almost singlehandedly brought about a conservative Waterloo. Supposedly, in a Rushless universe (or a universe without conservative media, at least), the GOP would have been free to compromise with Obama on a smaller O-Care bill, thus sparing us from the entitlement colossus that now bestrides America.

What would that compromise have looked like? I … simply don’t know, and neither does Peter Suderman.

Frum doesn’t spell out exactly what deal he thinks Republicans should’ve cut, but the ground that he’s implicitly suggesting should’ve been given up was basically the whole enchilada: the insurance mandate, the subsidies, the government run and regulated marketplaces, the expansion of Medicaid. These are rotten policies that, in just a few years, have already had rotten outcomes. What would have been gained by ObamaCare opponents caving and supporting something along these lines?

The best precedent for a Frum-style strategy of selling out compromise is probably Medicare Part D. That bill picked up support from genuine fiscal conservatives like Rep. Paul Ryan because the understanding was that, if this version doesn’t pass, something bigger and worse will. As a political calculation, this makes sense. But the end result wasn’t one to be proud of: We still ended up with a poorly designed, unsustainable, potentially disastrous policy. If ObamaCare opponents had compromised, that’s all they would have succeeded in passing here. Fine, you might say, but that’s what we got anyway! Fair enough. But unlike the current situation, they would have been responsible for those outcomes, would have given liberals political cover, and ultimately put themselves in a far weaker position to push for reforms.

Quite so. The mystery to me is why Frum thinks Obama would have compromised at all. He has a base too, you know, and with reconciliation on the table and Pelosi vowing that she could get to 216 even in a post-Scott Brown America, the left would have been very curious to know why The One was stooping to make a deal with the Rethuglikkkans when they could simply ram through a big fat bill of their own. That was the whole point of having a filibuster-proof majority — to do as they pleased, with no need to water down their legislation to woo a conservative base that wouldn’t be wooed anyway. (Many liberals still make that argument vis-a-vis the public option being dropped from the final bill.) All of which assumes that The One would have wanted to make a deal even if his base had let him; as DrewM says, “Ideologues like Obama don’t compromise when they don’t have to. Obama didn’t have to.” Indeed.

As for the politics of this, Democrats have insisted ad nauseam that O-Care is a winner in November. Many of them, strange as it may seem, appear to really believe it, in which case why would they want to share the benefits with the GOP? Better to freeze out the Republicans and keep all those yummy turnout-inspiring goodies for themselves. Why, the bill’s going to save hundreds of thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars, right? Well, who wouldn’t want to own that? And now they do own it. Forever.

If you’re looking for a critique of Republicans on the day after, stick with Ed and Philip Klein instead. The question to ask isn’t why the GOP refused to compromise with Obama; it’s why the GOP didn’t fill this legislative void when it had the chance.

Do not profess to be an expert on this bill but as far as I can tell everything is controlled by the government exceptwhat hospitals can charge for their services. Maybe I’m wrong, but this seems like a big loophole to me if I’m right. If this is the case, then you should buy hospital stock right now since they will later, if not sooner, cash in on this. I’m cynical enough to know that someone somewhere will be able to cash in on this poorly thought out too big to oversee bill big time, there always is. It remains to be seen whom?

I went down this morning to sign up my dog for welfare. At first the lady said, “Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare”. So I explained to her that my dog is unemployed, lazy, can’t speak English and has no frigging clue who his daddy is. He expects me to feed him, provide him with housing and medical care, and feel guilty because he is a dog.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify.

I imagine neither the Republicans nor the American conservatives consider it important to keep the Democrats’ or the “progressives’” legislative processes running smoothly. Had they capitulated a year ago, they would merely have had to face the next monstrous piece of legislation shortly thereafter. It might help David Frum to think of “progressives’” legislative initiatives as a dozen men lined up to take turns having their way with him. Help is on the way, but if Frum’s cooperative, he can satisfy all twelve.

BigWyo on March 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM

“Dialectical materialism? What the hell is that?”

For all her bravado and attempts to articulate law, the concept that totally escapes her is the concept of freedom from government coercion and individual liberty. Her comments reflect that rather glaringly.

darwin on March 22, 2010 at 7:02 PM

Given her tendentious interpretation of the Constitution as practically mandating totalitarian control of every facet of life, I’d love to hear her explanation for why this country wasn’t a police/totalitarian state right from the get-go. Surely the Founders couldn’t have been THAT oblivious to the awesome powers they’d granted to the Federal government, whatever the limitations imposed on those powers by the technologies of the day.

crr6 on March 22, 2010 at 7:24 PM

crr6: Well first of all the federal government isn’t taking over the control of health insurance companies, so you have a little credibility problem right off the bat

When the federal government tells private insurers what must be part of their offerings because such coverage is mandated, then the federal government is taking control of health insurance companies. When the federal government places caps on premiums–even though the federally mandated coverage drives up the costs–then the federal government controls health insurance companies. When the federal government does not allow consumers to purchase insurance that meets their own personal needs or choice because all of the federal mandates are not included in that selection, then the federal government controls not only insurance companies but its individual citizens’ freedoms.

The question to ask isn’t why the GOP refused to compromise with Obama; it’s why the GOP didn’t fill this legislative void when it had the chance.

And I’ll point out that there wasn’t a “legislative void” to begin with. This was not an issue Americans were interested in re-arranging their futures for until a year of relentless lies and propaganda and expenditure of political capital by the filthy lying dictator in the White House. By that time, the GOP had been locked out of any real substantive discussion because the rats did not want a real debate, they wanted the economic benefit of centralized control of “healthcare.”

BTW Allah, you must have missed the GOP’s efforts at addressing Obamacare in one of your anti-Palin or anti-Romney sprees because the GOP did indeed try to get involved and were rebuffed by the filthy lying dictator and his co-conspirators in the Congress.

Want to know how much a person or family will get in the form of a subsidy from the government to pay for their health insurance come 2014?

I selected the House bill which is the best case scenario and selected a family of 4 with an income of $50,000 with the wage-earner of the family being 45 years old. (if you want to get sick, pick the reconciliation bill option)

The premium is $13,395 a year. The family pays $,3419 a year for this policy or $284 a month. The rest? The balance of $9,876 is paid TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY in the form of a federal government subsidy.

Who pays for the “subsidy? An example of who pays for this would be a small business owner or an individual who makes more than 200K a year. They pay because their Medicare tax, income tax and investment gains tax(s) will ALL increase.

This is pure wealth re-distribution, plain and simple. It is not “helping the “poor”. The poor are covered currently under Medicaid. Just use the calculator and you’ll see that. This is confiscating money from successful people and giving it to the middle class folks who make less than them. PERIOD.

Once in place, this will be VERY hard to repeal. How do you convince a family of four to give up this hand-out?

Play around with the calculator and you see things that prove this to be such a crime against our Republic.

For instance, a family of four who makes $35,000 a year with a 45 year wage earner gets a health insurance policy worth $11,000, but only has to pay $1,200 a year for it and a family of 4 with a 45 year old wage earner who makes $89,000 has to get the same $11,000 policy (as it will be MANDATED that he buy it or pay a fine) and he has to pay for the whole thing and gets NO SUBSIDY.

This is Socialism, plain and simple.

But…where is the decrease in costs to make the coverage ‘affordable’? I know people who are already paying less than all that for the same coverage, or about the same.

What–Obamacare isn’t going to make anything better? GASP

Say it isn’t so!

Man, this is going to be great! Libs who aren’t paying for coverage now are going to soon have to, out of their own pockets in the form of taxes lest they be fined for it. Until Obamacare, they’ve gotten by being without medical insurance because they had chance to opt out. NOW, they’re going to have to pay at long last!

Liberals say we’re ‘complaining’. But wait until they’re stuck with what they wanted so badly. They’re going to whine enough to wake the dead!

You know, this thing might be worth hearing liberals screech in true agony for once.

Well that makes you even more credible/sarc

BTW, why is it that you tell others to refrain from the name calling and insults and to only attack their ideas, yet you are allowed to do the same? You see, you qualified your name-calling attacke because it’s “true”. Doesn’t that make you a major hyocrite who changes the rules to suit yourself? Sort of like Obama and the Donks?

I’ve been saying this from the beginning, unless we figure out a way to destroy them they will continue to lie to the public, demonize conservatives and scrub stories that shed light on the corruption that is the Democrat Party. When you get on liberals for calling us Nazis, I’ll be less hard.

When you get on liberals each and every time you’re on the site, every time they slander one of us, I’ll consider you honest all around. That’s the way I’m going to see you, as you have presented yourself. While you might well be all you claim, you’re lacking a lot to showcase that.

That’s just my opinion, as I have been thus far able to see of you.

Seriously doubt that now, would have agreed a week ago. Amnesty is the only hope for Democrats to win elections in the next few decades, and even the RINO’s know this. States are going to make things real interesting in the short term. These are times we haven’t seen before. States don’t want to be controlled by the feds. Brand new ground is being broken with this administration. The smart states will be working overtime preparing for what they now know will be the playing field.

Keemo on March 22, 2010 at 8:27 PM

The question to ask isn’t why the GOP refused to compromise with Obama; it’s why the GOP didn’t fill this legislative void when it had the chance.

Because we don’t mind an absence of an overarching federal government scheme!!!

Because there’s one party that is the party of “I’m from Washington, and I’m here to help” and it ain’t the GOP!!!

Conservatives have principles and the principle of planned economy ain’t one of them. Quite the opposite.

Also, get over the notion that “If only our kung fu was most righteous, we wouldn’t be criticized!” There is nothing a Republican can do that will avoid Democrat controversy. They lie.

Also, there’s only a “void” to fill with something lighter than nationalization–to centrists. To the Left, there was an absence of single-payer, to be filled with single-payer. And they will NOT bitch and moan about how HAAARDDD it is to repeal, rewrite, remake legislation into what they want it to be. They are not the “brake” or the “lesser evil” holding back worse. They are the Vanguard of History on the march.

Gay rights, ethnic politics, and now, middle class welfare… If you really WANT to run the GOP with Bill Clinton’s DLC agenda @ 1996…you’ll lose the Right for being traitors, the Left for being outside the Borg Collective of the Democrat Party, and by the time Right and Left scream ourselves hoarse about how badly you suck, the Center won’t see any point giving you a chance.

Not only is this a scheme of wealth redistribution (socialized theft), but it is a sure-fire way to kill incentive to succeed. Is there a chance that this is a means of driving down salaries in order to “improve” our “competition” in world trade; ie., we are all third-worlders now, playing on a level field.

Curious.

Meanwhile you’re still pretending that enacting middle class welfare will win you both Right and Left voters, and stifle Democrat complaints– if your kung fu is righteous enough. As if Democrats will ever run out of lies about not-Democrats. In reality, the Right hates your treachery, the Left smells your fear, and the Center just sees you’re, uh, polarizing.

Are you speaking of Conservatives or Republicans here? At times, namely 2000 – 2006 I saw no difference. Given the political pendulum in Washington, I’m not at all surprised by this bill passing the way that it did. The democratic party never hid their intentions to the voting public on the health care issue. Given the opportunity provided with seats obtained through voting, this should come as no surprise.

If we fire incumbents every week or 2 in the Primaries, just imagine how much more responsive our elected “Representatives” would become.

But to do that we need to make sure we have strong candidates running in every single race for both the Democrat and Republican Primaries.

Find out who the candidates are for your districts for all of the Federal, State and Local offices!

The Secretary of State website for your state would be a good place to start your research. Or you could check with your local political party.

I’ve played with this calculator before. Two things I’ve learned from it:

1. Apparently I’m rich — yay!
2. My premium should I choose to keep insuring myself (AS IF I am going to buy a policy on the “Exchange” a.k.a. the Cooperative) would be more than twice what I’m paying now. And I’m betting that my HSA will be outlawed to boot.

So ObamaCare is already shaping up like it’s gonna suck big time for me!

Given her tendentious interpretation of the Constitution as practically mandating totalitarian control of every facet of life, I’d love to hear her explanation for why this country wasn’t a police/totalitarian state right from the get-go. Surely the Founders couldn’t have been THAT oblivious to the awesome powers they’d granted to the Federal government, whatever the limitations imposed on those powers by the technologies of the day.

venividivici on March 22, 2010 at 7:23 PM

This needs to be repeated, as it’s a very accurate view into the mind of a troll. The troll masters in the leftist party know it’s a bunch of crap, but they know that between the education system and the media, they can convince a bare majority of this stupidity every time.

And if anyone has come up with a way to fight this level of propaganda, please let the rest of us know what that might be. In the meantime, deal with the reality. Idiots like crr6 and proud rino are in charge, and they will force us to do things their way if they have to kill us in the process. All totalitarian movements have gone this same way, they have no other options. Specifically, these trolls are the worst kind of marxists. They actually believe our freedom is worse for us than their totalitarianism. Therefore, our deaths are justified as being for our own good. That, and they can’t have free-thinkers like us “poisoning” the minds of their other true believers.

In a July 2 speech outlining plans to expand opportunities for people to serve in areas such as AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, Obama makes the following statement with no explanation or amplification.

“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

And the first installment is the 16,500 new IRS agents to be hired to ensure compliance with 0-Care.
That’s the Treasury Dept. under the umbrella of the Executive Branch.
One thing about the IRS they don’t have to follow such niceties as ROE.

Compromise? Indeed, how does one compromise with evil?

When you mix a gallon of black paint with white paint -the white paint no longer exists.

When you mix a gal of poison with a gallon of pure water you die when you consume it.

There can be no compromise -that’s why Rush was so right when he out loud was wise enout to hope Obama fails in his quest to destroy freedom by deceitful half-truths and paying off greedy fools for their perpetual votes. Some people don’t deserve freedom. None of us have the right to give it away -for it has been given to us by our Creator and earned by the deaths of the millions that have fought for it.

History will scratch its head in wonder at the folly of 21st Century America -the first people ever to voluntarily throw away their freedom and with it the hopes of the world!
