Limbaugh: We’ll remember in November

posted at 6:03 pm on March 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

By popular request, via the Right Scoop, a shot of espresso for your post-ObamaCare hangover from the man whom David Frum blames for having almost singlehandedly brought about a conservative Waterloo. Supposedly, in a Rushless universe (or a universe without conservative media, at least), the GOP would have been free to compromise with Obama on a smaller O-Care bill, thus sparing us from the entitlement colossus that now bestrides America.

What would that compromise have looked like? I … simply don’t know, and neither does Peter Suderman.

Frum doesn’t spell out exactly what deal he thinks Republicans should’ve cut, but the ground that he’s implicitly suggesting should’ve been given up was basically the whole enchilada: the insurance mandate, the subsidies, the government run and regulated marketplaces, the expansion of Medicaid. These are rotten policies that, in just a few years, have already had rotten outcomes. What would have been gained by ObamaCare opponents caving and supporting something along these lines?

The best precedent for a Frum-style strategy of selling out compromise is probably Medicare Part D. That bill picked up support from genuine fiscal conservatives like Rep. Paul Ryan because the understanding was that, if this version doesn’t pass, something bigger and worse will. As a political calculation, this makes sense. But the end result wasn’t one to be proud of: We still ended up with a poorly designed, unsustainable, potentially disastrous policy. If ObamaCare opponents had compromised, that’s all they would have succeeded in passing here. Fine, you might say, but that’s what we got anyway! Fair enough. But unlike the current situation, they would have been responsible for those outcomes, would have given liberals political cover, and ultimately put themselves in a far weaker position to push for reforms.

Quite so. The mystery to me is why Frum thinks Obama would have compromised at all. He has a base too, you know, and with reconciliation on the table and Pelosi vowing that she could get to 216 even in a post-Scott Brown America, the left would have been very curious to know why The One was stooping to make a deal with the Rethuglikkkans when they could simply ram through a big fat bill of their own. That was the whole point of having a filibuster-proof majority — to do as they pleased, with no need to water down their legislation to woo a conservative base that wouldn’t be wooed anyway. (Many liberals still make that argument vis-a-vis the public option being dropped from the final bill.) All of which assumes that The One would have wanted to make a deal even if his base had let him; as DrewM says, “Ideologues like Obama don’t compromise when they don’t have to. Obama didn’t have to.” Indeed.

As for the politics of this, Democrats have insisted ad nauseam that O-Care is a winner in November. Many of them, strange as it may seem, appear to really believe it, in which case why would they want to share the benefits with the GOP? Better to freeze out the Republicans and keep all those yummy turnout-inspiring goodies for themselves. Why, the bill’s going to save hundreds of thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars, right? Well, who wouldn’t want to own that? And now they do own it. Forever.

If you’re looking for a critique of Republicans on the day after, stick with Ed and Philip Klein instead. The question to ask isn’t why the GOP refused to compromise with Obama; it’s why the GOP didn’t fill this legislative void when it had the chance.

I thought Bush proposed tort reform numerous times.Let’s not forget what happened when he tried to reform social security.Yeah he was weak on things but I sure would rather have him right now instead of what we have. I’d even prefer McCain, and that’s saying something.

MikeA on March 22, 2010 at 6:35 PM

uhhhh yeah. You pretty much repeated the same thing over again without responding to my post. Again, it doesn’t matter if states don’t “trade insurance rates” (wtf is that anyway?), as long as health insurance activity within the state has a substantial effect on interstate commerce. I’m really not going to hold your hand with this one, read up yourself.

crr6 on March 22, 2010 at 6:28 PM

uuuuh yeah. You pretty much just ignored my arguments and claim I said the same thing… when I didn’t.

Again – The states do NOT trade insurance rates across state lines. That means what you pay for insurance in one state has no equivalency in another state.

It is ILLEGAL to purchase insurance across state lines. No interstate commerce.

The amount that a state pays for its health care high or low, does not impact any other interstate trade. It CAN’T economically impact interstate trade because it is illegal for states to collude on health insurance rates.

Let’s try an analogy…shall we?

You seem to think that if Las Vegas invested in tens of billions of dollars into hotels and bankrupted the state of Nevada that the commerce clause allows the federal government to take control of all hotel building in the US.

Have I properly read from your lesson herr teacher?

Lincoln presided over the War Between the States. We are now entering the true Civil War. Ariel Durant said,”A great civilization cannot be conquered from without until it destroys itself from within.” Barry Soetero is working on making that happen. First they get control of our health, then blanket amnesty followed by One Party status. ObaMao rescinds presidential term limits and we haven’t elected a president, we have annointed a king. Impossible?? It might have been until last night.

Umm this is from Obama’s SSI administration admiting that socialism is failing

MESSAGE TO THE PUBLIC:

Each year the Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds report on the current and projected financial status of the two programs. This message summarizes our 2009 Annual Reports.

The financial condition of the Social Security and Medicare programs remains challenging. Projected long run program costs are not sustainable under current program parameters. Social Security’s annual surpluses of tax income over expenditures are expected to fall sharply this year and to stay about constant in 2010 because of the economic recession, and to rise only briefly before declining and turning to cash flow deficits beginning in 2016 that grow as the baby boom generation retires.

The deficits will be made up by redeeming trust fund assets until reserves are exhausted in 2037, at which point tax income would be sufficient to pay about three fourths of scheduled benefits through 2083. Medicare’s financial status is much worse. As was true in 2008, Medicare’s Hospital Insurance (HI) Trust Fund is expected to pay out more in hospital benefits and other expenditures this year than it receives in taxes and other dedicated revenues.

Allow me to cut and paste my comment from the “repeal” thread:

Good grief! The ads can begin writing themselves right now to turn people against this abomination.

Once this travesty becomes law, the taxes to cover it are retroactive to January 2010. “Are you seeing less in your take home pay? Blame ‘free’ Obama-Pelosi-Reid Care because you won’t get any benefits until 2014.” OR “You’re smart enough not to pay for three years on your automobile or applicances or televsions before you can walk them out of the showroom. Why did you believe the Democrats who sold you a bad bill of goods? Repeal and repair a bad federal health-care insurance plan.”

“Do you want medical-health insurance coverage for X, X, or X? Then why doesn’t Obama-Pelosi-Reid Care allow you to buy the type of insurance that meets your own needs and eliminates the type that is more expansive and expensive?”

Etc. Face it. People are going to become more and more angry when they lose jobs because their employers cannot pay the extra burden of one-size-fits-all health insurance. The costs of consumer items will rise, as well, as the costs of ObaMaoCare are built into the overhead.

I went down this morning to sign up my dog for welfare. At first the lady said, “Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare”. So I explained to her that my dog is unemployed, lazy, can’t speak English and has no frigging clue who his daddy is. He expects me to feed him, provide him with housing and medical care, and feel guilty because he is a dog.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify.

My dog gets his first check Friday.

Damn , this is a great country!!

Why is this troll still here?

Keemo on March 22, 2010 at 6:41 PM

Because AP is to busy banning people for spouting revolutionary fantasies, apparently. Even Drywall the Dumb@$$ Canuck isn’t as bad as crr6.

Dark-Star on March 22, 2010 at 6:59 PM

Aren’t you the guy who challenged me to a debate, and then ran away when I accepted?

crr6 on March 22, 2010 at 6:47 PM

No, I’m the guy who challenged you to a debate and the site wouldn’t go for it; I never heard back after multiple requests. Did YOU petition the site, like I asked of you, to get an open thread for it? Did HA respond to you? They didn’t to me. So we’re stuck.

Not only me, but also YOU. At least I took the shot, more than once. Did YOU even try, counselor?

Liam on March 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM

No, not really. Not even a defense of liberalism that can be useful for genuine debate.

Liam:Yup:)

Heh! There was a post yesterday where some one called crr6 a communist…

crr6 is too stupid to be a communist….

BigWyo on March 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM

I must ask the question:

Does crr6 add anything of value to this site, or does this troll successfully rape every thread it touches? Why is this troll still here?

Keemo on March 22, 2010 at 6:41 PM

Ditto. Ed, Allah, there is nothing of value ever added to a thread by this poster. Nothing. Just hijacks, and splits. Does the ban hammer apply here?

For all her bravado and attempts to articulate law, the concept that totally escapes her is the concept of freedom from government coercion and individual liberty. Her comments reflect that rather glaringly.

darwin on March 22, 2010 at 7:02 PM

We are here because of Obama’s election. Talk radio failed to weed out the losers like Huckabee, Thompson, and McCain in the primary

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Del Dolemonte on March 22, 2010 at 6:40 PM

FIFY.

Isn’t that Algore once said? Not sure if it was him, but I recall it being a Dem who said it.

Liam on March 22, 2010 at 7:02 PM

The mystery to me is why Frum thinks Obama would have compromised at all. He has a base too, you know, and with reconciliation on the table and Pelosi vowing that she could get to 216 even in a post-Scott Brown America, the left would have been very curious to know why The One was stooping to make a deal with the Rethuglikkkans

Allahpundit, perhaps team Obama can be pragmatic when absolutely necessary i.e. they have calculated far enought ahead to give Republicans some things in reconciliation to deflect the heat of strictly partisan passage of the unpopluar, by the majority of the public, health care bill. While I must confess that I don’t like Frum for a variety of reasons he is by no means stupid and he may have been thinking along lines similar in principle to what I outlined.

And that’s NO authentic student of Law. Like I postulated, Six goes only to a school that teaches Law, but she’s not necessarily enrolled in the curriculum.

Liam on March 22, 2010 at 7:04 PM

As for the politics of this, Democrats have insisted ad nauseam that O-Care is a winner in November. Many of them, strange as it may seem, appear to really believe it,

And the Heaven’s Gate cult members thought castrating & then killing themselves were good ideas. The Jim Jones people thought moving to the middle of the jungle was a good idea. Democrats are delusional.

Hey, I’m from Michigan and I would like to take exception to your remarks.

The problem is I can’t. The libs have done their best to distroy this once great state. And the people who live in Detroit are just waiting to get some of that Obama stash.

mechkiller_k on March 22, 2010 at 7:05 PM

NBC news just used parts of this clip to link Rush to protesters yesterday who were using racist, homophobic and baby killer remarks against the Democrates.

Funny thing is, the only audio they had was the It’s a babykiller remark for the house debate. They had nothing else to back up the rest of the alligations.

Also, they metioned ACORN folding due to lack of money from donations. How two conservitives exposed them for promoting tax fraud. No mention about under age prositution.

mechkiller_k on March 22, 2010 at 6:55 PM

fixed for accuracy- Im sure NBC made sure to point that out too /s
