Breaking: Stupak voting yes?; Update: Or is he? Update: CNN says Stupak told them he’s still a No; Update: ABC confirms still No … “for now”
posted at 1:04 pm on March 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
And thus does the Republican final hope for blocking ObamaCare finally collapse, if this turns out to be true. One can’t call this a defection by Bart Stupak, since he’s a Democrat now apparently committing to support for a key Democratic agenda item. It’s certainly a betrayal of his oft-proclaimed pro-life principles, however. So far, the news has been reported by MS-NBC on its broadcast and website (as a banner headline) as “sources say,” and reported similarly by C-SPAN, but as of this moment, no written report has surfaced with any details.
This could be a false report, but it’s been no secret for the last few days that Stupak has worked hard to find a way to vote for this bill. We’ll see if the promise of an executive order from Barack Obama did the trick.
Update, 1:16 pm ET: Suddenly, that banner has been removed from MS-NBC’s website without any explanation — and I still haven’t seen a written report anywhere about it. Hmmmm.
Update II: Politico reports that Stupak has flipped to yes, according to “senior Democratic aides.” Looks like the same sourcing that MS-NBC had.
Update III, 1:22 pm ET: CNN says he’s still a No, but that may be older information. Still looking for any substantive reporting based on something other than the MS-NBC sourcing.
Update IV, 1:25 pm ET: The Hill reports this as coming solely from MS-NBC:
House Democratic leaders are struggling to gain the 216 votes they need to win a healthcare vote on Sunday.
House Democratic leaders struggling to gain the 216 votes they need to win a healthcare vote earned two more crucial supporters on Sunday.
Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) announced she’d support the bill, saying she was convinced it would prevent federal funds from being used for abortion services.
Separately, MSNBC reported that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) would vote for the bill.
I suspect that Stupak will eventually find an excuse to vote for the bill, probably by accepting the promise of an EO in some form. But he may not yet have done so. We’ll keep an eye on it.
Update V: CNN reports that Stupak told them directly that he’s still a No.
Update VI: Major Garrett reports from Capitol Hill on Twitter:
Stupak spox 2 me on abortion/EO deal: “No…there is not yet a deal & he is still a NO vote right now.” Note: “right now”
Yes, be sure to note that well. Brian Baird (WA) is now reported to have committed to voting Yes, but he’s on the progressive wing of the party.
More to come ….

This isn’t the end of the world if they rewrote this bill – on a bi partisan basis. I heard a piece of legislation this size has never been passed by only one party in the history of our country.

Well, let’s see:
1) I recall seeing an article on Politico (ok, consider the source) a few weeks ago about how Hoyer was “reaching out” to Blue Dogs and telling them he understood their dilemmas with Obamacare.
2) Back when the Dems were in the minority and they held a vote for caucus leader, Pelosi beat out Hoyer (Pelosi had help from her late chief henchman, Murths) for caucus leader. If Hoyer had won the vote, he’d be Speaker today.
3) They both come out of the Baltimore machine, but apparently there is no love lost between them.
But if that is what Hoyer is up to, he would have to be very, very discreet. The left wing of the caucus, the DNC, the MSM and Obama would not take kindly to him tanking Obamacare.

In Pittsburgh, Acorn officials said they were trying to continue work while they decided whether to stay with the national organization or form a new one. Maryellen Hayden, the volunteer director of Allegheny County’s Acorn, said the group was continuing to counsel people facing foreclosure and had recently sent two buses with dozens of members to Washington to rally for the Democratic health care bill.

That which can be done by Exec. Order can be undone. Stupak has supposedly trusted the most radical pro-abortion president in history to hold up his end of the bargain. Stupak will be remembered as one of the biggest suckers in the history of American politics.
I say “supposedly” because that assumes Stupak honestly thinks the EO will actually have meaning as opposed to just being a convenient means to give him political cover. Of the sincerity of that belief I have serious doubts.

Bart Stupak sadly reminds me of Neville Chamberlain. Substitute “We will have no federally funded abortions” deal signed with Obama with “We will have peace in our time” deal signed Hitler.
I just watched the Governor of Rhode Island on Cavuto’s show. He is ticked off! He said this is the biggest fraud to be imposed on American people and he will join the 38 other States who want to fight this. This will hurt all the States with crippling financial and regulatory burdens.
In a way, Obama and Pelosi by passing this Obamacare will unite the Reps, Independents, Dems and State Legislatures who want to fight this. People rise up when governments pass laws that the people deem to be unfair and unjust (think Boston Tea Party, Calif. Propostion 13 tax revolt, etc.). There is no turning back anymore. We will have to stay engaged and fight if we want to keep Obama and Pelosi from taking over us.
State of Florida Attorney General on Cavuto now. Florida will sue too.

This is how simple it is. ObaMao will tell Stupidpak that he will remove the abolition financing in the bill by Executive Order after the vote. They squeak by. Obama “cannot” declare abortion funding to be dismissed. Stupidpak and his pro-life cronies then tell their idiot voters, “we tried. they lied. What could we do?” Stupidpak and his pro-life phonies don’t have to be smart, just smarter than the voters that keep them in office. No big deal here.

Here’s what pro-life groups have to say about Stupak’s deal
http://www.lifenews.com/nat6166.html
“”The statutory mandate construed by the courts would override any executive order or regulation. This is the unanimous view of our legal advisors and of the experts we have consulted on abortion jurisprudence. Only a change in the law enacted by Congress, not an executive order, can begin to address this very serious problem in the legislation,” he explained.”
So, no, the EO is not worth the paper it’s written on. Stupak knows this. He was just looking for cover.
Vera on March 21, 2010 at 6:27 PM
Is Stupak a moron?
Even if the “One” issues an executive order, it can be rescinded at any time by any President.
