Breaking: Stupak voting yes?; Update: Or is he? Update: CNN says Stupak told them he’s still a No; Update: ABC confirms still No … “for now”

posted at 1:04 pm on March 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

And thus does the Republican final hope for blocking ObamaCare finally collapse, if this turns out to be true.  One can’t call this a defection by Bart Stupak, since he’s a Democrat now apparently committing to support for a key Democratic agenda item.  It’s certainly a betrayal of his oft-proclaimed pro-life principles, however.  So far, the news has been reported by MS-NBC on its broadcast and website (as a banner headline) as “sources say,” and reported similarly by C-SPAN, but as of this moment, no written report has surfaced with any details.

This could be a false report, but it’s been no secret for the last few days that Stupak has worked hard to find a way to vote for this bill.  We’ll see if the promise of an executive order from Barack Obama did the trick.

Update, 1:16 pm ET: Suddenly, that banner has been removed from MS-NBC’s website without any explanation — and I still haven’t seen a written report anywhere about it.  Hmmmm.

Update II: Politico reports that Stupak has flipped to yes, according to “senior Democratic aides.”  Looks like the same sourcing that MS-NBC had.

Update III, 1:22 pm ET: CNN says he’s still a No, but that may be older information.  Still looking for any substantive reporting based on something other than the MS-NBC sourcing.

Update IV, 1:25 pm ET: The Hill reports this as coming solely from MS-NBC:

House Democratic leaders are struggling to gain the 216 votes they need to win a healthcare vote on Sunday.

House Democratic leaders struggling to gain the 216 votes they need to win a healthcare vote earned two more crucial supporters on Sunday.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) announced she’d support the bill, saying she was convinced it would prevent federal funds from being used for abortion services.

Separately, MSNBC reported that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) would vote for the bill.

I suspect that Stupak will eventually find an excuse to vote for the bill, probably by accepting the promise of an EO in some form.  But he may not yet have done so.  We’ll keep an eye on it.

Update V: CNN reports that Stupak told them directly that he’s still a No.

Update VI: Major Garrett reports from Capitol Hill on Twitter:

Stupak spox 2 me on abortion/EO deal: “No…there is not yet a deal & he is still a NO vote right now.” Note: “right now”

Yes, be sure to note that well.  Brian Baird (WA) is now reported to have committed to voting Yes, but he’s on the progressive wing of the party.
More to come ….

brewcrew67 on March 21, 2010 at 1:06 PM

heh. I guess I’ll repost something from the other thread…

Looks like this thing will pass, although of course there are no guarantees. Undoubtably when it does, virtually everyone here will flip out and post about how America is dead and an armed uprising is imminent etc etc.

Before you guys type that stuff up, I hope you think rationally, and consider the following questions.

1) What do you not like about this bill? Does your fear accord with the reality of the bill?

2) Do you think the healthcare status quo is better? Do you know what the status quo is?

3) Do you fear a government take-over of health care? First, does this bill do that? Second, what does the bill actually do? Finally, should private insurance companies inherently be trusted more than the government with matters concerning your health? Would you at least agree they ought to be regulated? If so, how?

4) If you don’t like this bill, what do you think is a better solution? Visualize that solution. Now, be honest, and ask yourself if your ‘fix’ in any way 1) affects healthcare coverage for coveraged or uncovered Americans, 2) brings costs down and 3) retains feasibility in the public-private mesh that defines U.S. healthcare today.

5) After reviewing these questions, compare and contrast today’s (admittedly imperfect) partisan positions on healthcare. Now grade each party. Who fares better?

6) After giving out the grades, where do you stand in the debate? Do you support the proposal? Why/Why not? And do you think a better proposal will present itself that doesn’t carry the same or bigger flaws?

With Stupak, it was always about appearances, not principles or deeply held beliefs. To politicians, a conviction is what happens when feds find payola stashed in your freezer.

Anyway, let’s see what happens when the all-powerful superstate we once called a republic starts throwing people in prison for refusing to buy government-mandated insurance. That should be interesting.

We’ll see if the promise of an executive order from Barack Obama did the trick.

Do these people not even bother to follow ANY of the rules anymore… or bother to read the Constitution?

An Executive Order cannot over ride Law.

The Senate Bill specificly makes it possible to fund abortions with Tax dollars. No EXECUTIVE order can change that.

The next time a supporter of this bill tells you how great government run health care is going to be, ask him why it is going to take 15,000 new IRS agents to assure compliance. If it was so “wonderful”, wouldn’t prudent individuals be falling all over themselves to “join in”? If the Supreme Court does not strike it down, then our only hope is the individual state we live in. These people have done their best to destroy America’s promise and freedom. I’ve heard all the arguments about the wonderfulness of government health care and I reject it. We are on the first really big step to socialism. We have to turn it back at the first opportunity or else.

Assuming of course that the government is even charged with manipulating such things — which it’s not.

Ronnie on March 21, 2010 at 1:16 PM

1) What do you not like about this bill? Does your fear accord with the reality of the bill?

The individual mandate? The higher taxes? The higher costs? The real cost? And for part two, yes.

2) Do you think the healthcare status quo is better? Do you know what the status quo is?

I prefer the status quo to making the situation worse. No, I’m a f’ng idiot who never gets sick or needs to pay bills.

3) Do you fear a government take-over of health care? First, does this bill do that? Second, what does the bill actually do? Finally, should private insurance companies inherently be trusted more than the government with matters concerning your health? Would you at least agree they ought to be regulated? If so, how?

Do I fear a gov’t-takeover of health care? I’m watching one. Stopping companies from deciding who to do business with, even if the person already has out-of-control liabilities? The company won’t stay in business. At which point we’ll be told the government simply needs to step in to stop this national tragedy…it created.

And yes, I trust the private sector more. Simply because I can now choose which insurance company I utilize or don’t. I can make my own choices and control my health care.

You can read any of the multiple conservative solutions which cover uninsured and bring down costs. Not quite sure what the last part is about when you’re talking about completely reforming the system.

5) After reviewing these questions, compare and contrast today’s (admittedly imperfect) partisan positions on healthcare. Now grade each party. Who fares better?

Probably the one which isn’t on track to lose dozens of House seats, about 7 Senate seats, and an equal number of gubernatorial races thanks largely to ObamaCare.

6) After giving out the grades, where do you stand in the debate? Do you support the proposal? Why/Why not? And do you think a better proposal will present itself that doesn’t carry the same or bigger flaws?

ProfessorMiao on March 21, 2010 at 1:17 PM

1) What do you not like about this bill? Does your fear accord with the reality of the bill?

The bill forces me to purchase health insurance, takes over health insurance companies and dictates what kind of health care I am allowed to receive plus how much doctors and nurses are allowed to be paid. Basically it’s Chavez style nationalization of health care.

2) Do you think the healthcare status quo is better? Do you know what the status quo is?

Yes.

3) Do you fear a government take-over of health care? First, does this bill do that? Second, what does the bill actually do? Finally, should private insurance companies inherently be trusted more than the government with matters concerning your health? Would you at least agree they ought to be regulated? If so, how?

Nothing, see #2

5) After reviewing these questions, compare and contrast today’s (admittedly imperfect) partisan positions on healthcare. Now grade each party. Who fares better?

Everybody loses. Doctors, Nurses, Me, you.
“We’re going to control the insurance companmies” – Joe Biden.

6) After giving out the grades, where do you stand in the debate? Do you support the proposal? Why/Why not? And do you think a better proposal will present itself that doesn’t carry the same or bigger flaws?

Those who give up medical liberty for the sake of medical security deserve neither.

BREAKING: House Democrats have picked up critical health reform “yes” votes from a group of anti-abortion lawmakers, including Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak, according to senior Democratic aides. Democrats believe a breakthrough with Stupak’s group – based on the promise of an executive order to be issued by President Barack Obama reinforcing a ban on federal funding for abortion – will help give them the 216-vote majority needed to pass reform on Sunday.
