If Texas does the S word, I guarantee you it is a done deal until Texas makes the decision to rejoin. There are a few facilities in Texas such as a nuclear weapons armory and their Air and Army National Guard is among the largest in the Nation.

FDL doesn’t even count Matheson as a no even though he came out and said he is a no.

They do. You will find Matheson at #29 in the FireDogLake list of Opposed members, in the dark green column.

Obama: Bound to be Fake [John J. Pitney Jr.]

In his remarks to the House Democratic Caucus (the White House website called it “The House Democratic Congress” – talk about a sense of ownership), the president said:

I have the great pleasure of having a really nice library at the White House. And I was tooling through some of the writings of some previous Presidents and I came upon this quote by Abraham Lincoln: “I am not bound to win, but I’m bound to be true. I’m not bound to succeed, but I’m bound to live up to what light I have.”

The book he was consulting may have been They Never Said It, by Paul F. Boller and John George. If so, he missed what they said about the Lincoln passage: “This sounds like Honest Abe, but honesty compels admirers of Lincoln to admit that there is no documentary evidence for the statement.”

Other than the sheer lunacy of this whole Obamacare business in itself is anyone else wondering why, with all of the problems this country is facing, so many people out of work, wars going on…..that allthis administration is concerned with is passing this legislation?

Here’s the thing I don’t get.

These Democrats who are voting yes on ObamaCare — did they sign up for Congress in order to be Healh Care Commissioners?

Because for years and years and years to come, if this thing passes — Congress has a new and very burdensome duty, and that’s to allocate, implement, revise, amend, and fight over health care on a scale far greater than anything they’ve ever done before.

How freaking tedious, for Congress to give themselves this dismal, unpleasant, and hugely costly job.

It should be enough to make half of Congress want to retire, looking at the years and decades of health-care tedium, budgetary paucity and national weakening that lie ahead.

Ah, but it is the cast of characters that are behind the scene.

Cass R. Sunstein –
• Will be responsible for reviewing draft regulations and assessing their costs and benefits
• Known for advancing a field called “law and behavioral economics” that seeks to shape law and policy around the way research shows people actually behave; though embraced by conservatives, critics say it fails to account for the sometimes less-than-rational aspects of human behavior.
• In his 2002 book, Republic.com, discussed the drawbacks of limitless choices on the Internet that allow people to seek out only like-minded people and opinions that merely fortify their own views; he talked about the idea of the government requiring sites to link to opposing views. He later came to realize it was a “bad idea.”
• In his 2004 book, Animal Rights, suggested that animals ought to be able to bring suit, with private citizens acting as their representatives, to ensure that animals are not treated in a way that violates current law.
• In a 2007 speech at Harvard he called for banning hunting in the U.S.

The longer this drags on the more I believe it will not pass. It’s so crazy there that when these people wake up tomorrow and think about what they’re about to do, and the people screaming outside, they’re gonna vote NO.

Heck, Loretta Sanchez is holing up in South Beach to avoid Pelosi!

PattyJ on March 21, 2010 at 1:58 AM

I like the fact that this bill is backloaded, except for one crucial element: forbidding refusal of insuring children due to preexisting conditions. Why is this good? Because we will get to test one of the conservatives’ bigger arguments, that such a provision will cause the cost of insurance to skyrocket, without completely destroying the insurance market.

If the bill passes, and people like the few things that happen in the first year, expect to keep that part of the bill for a while. I have no idea whether people will like the hors d’oeuvres and what their effect will be. But children’s insurance costs (the cost difference btw insuring employee and employee+family) will very likely skyrocket if all private plans have to cover children with serious illnesses, including diabetes, leukemia etc.

Don’t worry about the big subsidies and regulations that take effect circa 2013-2017 though, because they will be cut long before they take effect. The bill becomes unaffordable the moment this Congress passes the permanent doc fix, which I expect they will pass after they pass the reform bill. A new congress is going to look at more realistic revenue and expense projections about two years from now and will just never let the provisions take effect, because they wouldn’t be able to pretend it’s paid for.

Plus by then parts would be adjudicated unconstitutional and the scheme won’t work without those pieces. One awesome thing about bad ideas is that they often don’t work as advertised.

Kini on March 21, 2010 at 2:13 AM

My last ditch effort to my congressman (Scott Murphy). Considering the fact that he admitted only a few days ago to having read half the bill, I kept it simple.

There is still time to do the right thing and vote no on the unconstitutional healthcare monstrosity that will take away the freedom of every American.

Surely, you can see the hypocrisy of pro-choice liberals who clamor for a woman’s “right to choose” what she decides to do with her own body while supporting a bill that will remove everyone else’s choice to do what they want.

But, this bill is not about compassion or health. Nancy Pelosi herself said last week that it isn’t about health; it is about maintenance. In other words, it is about the government forcing every individual to receive healthcare on the government’s schedule. And, it is ultimately about setting up a huge bureaucracy to establish mandates and time schedules to tell the American people when they can and cannot receive the care they want. This is government-controlled socialized healthcare.

I am old enough to remember fee for service. Having the right to pay a doctor when you see one is the best way to keep costs down. HSAs and catastrophic insurance plans can be used to pay extraordinary needs. But this is the core issue and the one the liberals refuse to give up – the individual’s right to see a physician when they deem it necessary. Preventive medicine is a good thing, but I am a firm believer in education, not legislation.

I also remember when doctors were forced out of private practice because they could no longer afford malpractice insurance. There is nothing in this bill that addresses that issue.

I wonder if those in our local medical device industry are really aware of what government-managed healthcare will eventually do to their businesses when the government begins to decide that surgeries are too expensive. I guess Big Pharm will be the winner here.

You said the CBO report would be an important part of your decision, however, removing major expenses like the doc fix, the CLASS Act, new government hires for this huge bureaucracy, etc., when you fully plan to vote for them in separate bills is just wrong.

The American people, including those in your own district, are against this bill. You know it. Congress knows it. Obama knows it. There are many better ways of lowering the cost of healthcare and of insurance.

We also know that “exchange” is nothing more than a deceptive word for “public option.” Government mandates would apply to any insurance allowed in the exchange. Eventually the “exchange” would morph into nothing but the public option. This is precisely what has happened in Massachusetts and the cost has become unsustainable.

You are not only my congressman; you are my neighbor. I can’t even drive past your house without thinking you are more concerned with your re-election than you are about representing the wishes of the majority of the people in your district. How will you even be able to look your neighbors in the eye?

We cannot afford this bill. Please reconsider. If you don’t, I will have no choice but to work to unseat you in the fall.

Connie on March 21, 2010 at 2:13 AM

Oooh. Scott Murphy. Tsk. I think you are going to have to chuck him. Perhaps he’ll get a brain though. Sanchez did. So did Space and Matheson. Hmmmm….

andy85719 on March 21, 2010 at 2:15 AM

Time to really focus in — Encourage Stupak and the pro-lifers to hold. Tennesseans, keep working on Davis and Tanner

Turn up the heat.

(H/T redneck_hippie) It looks like Loretta Sanchez is going to be a no. At least that is what FireDogLake thinks and they cite Roll Call as well. Even Eva Langoria is trying to get a hold of Sanchez apparently. Sanchez has a very tough Vietnamese challenger who will score a large Asian vote and might be concerned with losing her seat.

All right, to summarize everything. If Stupak and the pro-lifers hold, don’t buck the Catholic Bishops and pro-life groups then the bill will fail. They are:

PRIORITY #1

Lincoln Davis

John Tanner

Bart Stupak

Kathy Dahlkamper

Nick Rahall

Jerry Costello

Dan Lipinski

Marcy Kaptur

Allan Mollohan

Marion Berry (Bill Clinton is desperately trying to peel him off)

Steve Driehaus

Joe Connelly

Rick Boucher (Almost forgot him! He hasn’t announced but was a lean no last I checked.)

PRIORITY #2

Earl Pomeroy

Paul Kanjorski

Solomon Ortiz

Mike Michaud

Bill Foster (Doubtful, but still place a call)

PRIORITY #3

Brian Baird

Last but not least, pray for the Republic tonight, when you get up, and before the votes are taken tomorrow. God Almighty, above all, moves the hearts of men and ultimately has His purpose prevail in everything. Pray that He intercede for us so we may win this battle and begin to renew our country so we may make it great again for our children’s sake. Pray that our freedoms may be preserved and that we may always never take for granted again the liberties and grace He has blessed this country with. Pray that though corrupt politicians may come up with many devices to achieve a dark purpose, that He may frustrate those devices and thwart them ultimately. It has been an honor to serve you all, to engage in beneficial conversation with so many well- thought people, and to make so many new friends here. God bless you all. May His countenence shine upon you.

Its redistribution of poverty
Spread the misery around, and if there is not enough to spread around, create some more so that everyone has plenty of misery.

Food is nothing more than an annoyance.

Dear Baby Jesus,

I like America. A lot. As much as I like chocolate. And bunnies. And Baby Jesus. So please expose Pelosi as the clown she is and give our representatives the courage and wisdom to kill the bill… so that the heathen Allahpundit can post the glorious humpbot video.

Amen

P.S. Maybe even save Allahpundit’s soul too.

As difficult as it is to face the prospect that this monstrosity will be passed later today, there is a deli ious irony in The Won having to resort to the ultimate confession of a loser: “Please, please, please pass this or my Presidency will be in the toilet”. He lacks the introspection to recognize that if it doesn’t pass, it will be almost completely his fault and for so many reasons.

ya2daup on March 21, 2010 at 4:02 AM

“Please, please, please pass this or my Presidency will be in the toilet”

Its already in the toilet. He’s not going to get amnesty, cap and tax, or anything else for the next 3 years. The question is whether he gets to build himself a monument or not.

That’s already done by virtual of his skin color.

We have another real problem, and that’s other members of congress that are part of the problem that allowed barry to get into office in the first place.

A complicit media that continues to fawn over the WON and his wife’s arms and extremities.

A San Fran Rice-a-Roni nut treat that somehow continues to lick the nether regions of the house members into allowing criminals like Charlie Rangel to bask like a beached whale on the Bahamian beaches. Ethical indeed.

Our government is littered, on both sides, with the feces of what needs to be scooped out and trashed.

When ObamaCare loses — channeling Gene Hackman in “Hoosiers” — and it will lose, I prefer to think of Napoleon, after recrossing the River Dniester at the end his retreat from Moscow in 1812, turning in his saddle to look back and asking, “Where did everybody go?”

Could the Republicans force a roll call vote? If it’s voted down, I believe it’s finished for the duration of this session of Congress. True?

I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago and someone mentioned a “motion to reconsider,” which I do not fully understand yet, but I think it may allow them to vote on it again. I hope I’m wrong.

Man, you’ve reminded me of something I really miss now that I no longer live on the shores of Gitchee Gumee: netting smelt during their run in the Spring. Nothing beats a fresh batch of pan-fried smelt in beer batter (except my no-longer-living paternal grandmother’s fried lake trout)! Good times!

Let’s hope (1) the GOP drains them both, (2) they run the picket fence successfully and don’t get caught watching the paint dry, or (3) the GOP clears the floor for, say, Paul Ryan who hits a bill-killing shot on Fox News Sunday today.

Hoosiers: what a great flick.

As I wake up and once again have hopes raised in the morning only to have them dashed by afternoon, I’ll be attending mass this morning and having a self-imposed news black-out all day.

I leave you with a scumbag congressman voting against his constituents wishes but how lovely he realizes the jig is up:
