Keep hope alive: Space, Matheson both voting no

posted at 8:46 pm on March 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

Matheson’s the guy whose brother was nominated to the federal bench on the very day he met with The One about health care. He was a no before … and he’s a no now. Space was yes before, but suddenly he’s a no too — and a hard no judging by his statement, i.e. not one liable to flip back tomorrow. All of which is perfectly dull and predictable if you assume that Pelosi has already made it to 216 and beyond and is simply looking to cut loose a few red-district Democrats to vote no at the eleventh hour.

But wait:

We’re told that this wasn’t a surprise to Speaker Pelosi but that she didn’t release him to vote no either, as sometimes happens late in the game when the leadership knows it has enough votes and can spare some to protect vulnerable incumbents.

I don’t know how else to read that except as an admission that she doesn’t have the votes. I’m shocked to be saying it, but if TPM is right, this really isn’t over. Yet.

The Firedoglake whip count had it at 204-206 earlier this afternoon with 21 undecided, including Matheson and 10 members of Stupak’s bloc. Matheson’s no makes it 204-207 but some Stupakers have been peeling away, so assume they split evenly and you’re at 209-212 with 10 on the fence to decide it. Stupak himself claimed a few hours ago that Pelosi was still four votes short, but as I’m writing this, there are rumors that Glenn Nye and Kurt Schrader are both voting yes. Nye was expected to, but Schrader was a potential yes-to-no flip.

Dude, I’m nervous.

Update: Actually, it’s possible that Space made his intentions known to Pelosi ages ago and she wrote him off as not worth pursuing. That would allow for a scenario where she has the votes but never formally releases Space. But if that’s what happened here, why did Space wait to the last minute to announce his no? If it was set in stone last week, no reason to keep quiet.

Update: NRO says this “still isn’t nailed down,” but it sounds like the final stumbling block may be some sort of executive order about abortion to bring the Stupakers on board. And the pro-choicers are apparently okay with it. Gulp.

Update: Hold the phone — sounds like Nye isn’t a yes (yet) after all.

The only thing better than 3 of them telling her they are voting yes and switching to no is to switch parties right before they vote no. All h. e. double-hockeystick would break out on the floor.

Dude, I’m nervous.

Allah … don’t be nervous. This bill is a non-starter – and nothing to get too worried over.

Look – the bill will either be killed by Congress …

Or it will be killed by the facts of life. The facts are – we can’t afford the bill and if it gets passed – it’s just going to accelerate the train into bankruptcy hell. We’re already headed there anyway.

Once the nation is bankrupt – we’ll get serious people to do the serious work of sorting out entitlements. It’ll be painful – perhaps even a little violent (I can anticipate all kind of anger towards the folks who had their hand on the switch) … but in any case – it WILL all be sorted out.

Sneaky Liberals————–Pearl Harbour.
==========================================

Mar 21 2010

Dec 7th 1941
==========================

Today March 21,2010

a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Liberal Party.

The DNC, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe I interpret the will of the Tea Patriots and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces – with the unbounded determination of our people – we will gain the inevitable triumph – so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by the DNC on Sunday, December seventh, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Democrat Party.

-(snark).

Any of you living in Sanchez’s district, OfA is sending out the following:

*****UPDATE: Rep. Sanchez’s DC number is no longer taking voice mails. The best number to call her at is at her Santa Ana campaign office. We’ve updated the script in Neighbor to Neighbor with the new information. If you live in congressional district 47 (Central Orange County), let Rep. Sanchez know that you support the President and want the health reform bill to pass:

714-839-4431

We need one more California Member of Congress to commit to voting YES on health insurance reform. Please make calls NOW to constituents in Congressional District 47, home of Loretta Sanchez. Rep. Sanchez voted Yes for health reform last fall. Tell people to let her know she MUST support it NOW.

Sue on March 20, 2010 at 9:32 PM

That’s great that some of the Democrats are listening to their constituents, who overwhelmingly DO NOT want government-run healthcare.
Remember:
If you vote for socialized medicine, you will go down in history as a member of the corrupt and socialist OBAMA CONGRESS.

If you vote for this freedom-destroying bill you will become infamous. You will be in the history books of the future as the “group that destroyed freedom in America.”

If you vote for this ugly bill full of backroom deals, you will be immortalized as one of a group of people who took America away from our Founding Principles toward socialism.

Obama is a glory-seeker and wants to use YOU for his narcissistic dreams of a socialist America. Don’t let yourself be used by this idealogue

That Morris list makes no sense. But…

I’m beginning to wonder if Pelosi is trying to splinter the vote.

One group of 216 votes “yea” on reconciliation and a slightly different group votes “yea” on the Senate bill. This way, they can obfuscate who passed Obamacare during the mid-terms.

I voted for Reconciliation, not the Senate Bill!

I voted for the Senate Bill, not Reconciliation!

So Blue Dogs can vote for everything but the Senate Bill, and pro-choices can cover the difference for the Senate Bill.

B Man on March 20, 2010 at 9:45 PM

I get the impression that Nancy is close and still twisting arms, but DOES NOT HAVE A LOCK.

So why the vote? Because it’s become a dead fish. Barry’s numbers are underwater. Hell Nancy has something like a 7% APPROVAL rating. Congress’s isn’t much better. They can keep going but the cost is mounting. So what to do? Barry delayed his trip until Sunday. Spent days strong-arming, still got nowhere. The Democratic machinations on vote procedure are even turning off their supporters in the MSM. So the decision was to continue strong-arming, SOUND POSITIVE, and put it to a vote Sunday. If it passes, great. If it doesn’t, HEY LEFT-WIND BASE, WE TRIED!

Even if it passes Sunday, the ‘fix’ still needs to be approved by the Senate. They hope. The Republicans are already on record as saying they’ll do everything to block it. If they succeed, the House just got hosed. Let them explain to their constituents back home. If it somehow finally gets out of the Senate, it will not be the same ‘fix’ that went in. So it’s back to the House again. Not good for them. At the same time, the poison well that was the Senate will get NOTHING accomplished for the rest of the year.

This is not a “win” for Barry.

To: YOU
Date: TODAY
From: GOD
Subject: YOURSELF
Reference: LIFE

This is God. Today I will be handling All of your problems for you. I do
Not need your help. So, have a nice day.
I love you. And, remember…. If life happens to deliver a situation to you
that you cannot handle, do Not attempt to resolve it yourself! Kindly put
it in the SFGTD (something for God to do) box. I will get to it in MY TIME.
All situations will be resolved, but in My time, not yours.. Once the
matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying about it.
Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life
now. Should you decide to send this to a friend; Thank you. You may have
touched their life in ways you will never know!

Now, you have a nice day.

Just FYI Howard Stern said that years ago.

What happens if they don’t show up to vote? Does that mean anything regarding the numbers?

That’s where our house is. In a neighborhood called Gardenwood Park. Mr. Nye is a piece of work, maybe it’s because he’s all shiny and new but I am not sure yet.

Open letter to all 41 Republican members of Congress:

The Democrats have chosen to ignore the will of the American people. I humbly ask that no new business be allowed to pass in the Senate until Obamacare is repealed, killed, buried, never to be seen again. I prefer a shut down government with no services to having this travesty as law.

At a minimum, I would hope that the Medicare doctor fix be permanently blocked. Since the Dems have claimed that these savings are part of the budget and the CBO scoring, then make it so. Sure, many doctors will start refusing to accept Medicare/Medicaid, but that is the point. The Dems are lying, and this will force them out into the open.

Thanks for listening,

I confess. I had my tv on when Geraldo came on about eleven minutes ago. Well, the Huckster said he thinks the Dems have it won because Nancy and Obama came out and spiked the ball. What did they say? Does anyone know?

Rules committee just voted to keep Louisiana Purchase in recon bill.

Memo to Sue: Don’t go away mad, just go away.

We don’t give a high holy hell what you think here. Do your trolling somewhere else where like-minded people will give a damn what you think.

Whoa, whoa! Friendly fire incident! Sue reposted an Organizing for America email so we could (1) see what the OfAers were up to and (2) make our own calls to tell Sanchez to vote NO. I’m going to do my best to tie up Sanchez’ phone line.
Hope this helps!

Listen, everyone’s jumpy. I notice that very few of the real trolls — crr6, etc. — have dared show their face, at least on any of the threads I’ve been on. Either they’re being very prudent or Allah and Ed have suspended the trolls temporarily (I asked them to, but of course it’s up to them).

Mary,

Listening to Cardoza in the Rules Committee hearing today, I don’t think it does us any good if we aren’t in their district. They toss everything that doesn’t garner them a vote.

Sue on March 20, 2010 at 10:23 PM

UNI beat Kansas! ANYTHING is possible!

IowaWoman on March 20, 2010 at 10:24 PM

My in-laws are in Sanchez’ district. I just got the voicemail anyway, so I made my pitch and hung up.

Thanks for clarifying about Sue. I came in late and was very confused too.

Sue, thanks for the info.

truetexan on March 20, 2010 at 10:26 PM

Winebabe, I caught holy hell cuz i thought Sue was posting to cause trouble. Her post was just a copy from Organizing for America. Tried to apologize, but she was too good for that. Everyone here is on edge. We gotta read the posts more carefully and sometimes we are posting at the same time. Timing is off. We are all here for the same purpose, at least I think we are.

Very true — so hubby and I have been promising MONEY when we call a Congressman not our own. Contribution if the Rep votes no, contribution to the Rep’s opponent if the Rep votes yes. The contributions will wind up fairly small, since we’re going to be making a lot of ‘em, but every little bit helps, right?

Mary in LA on March 20, 2010 at 10:31 PM

Dear Honorable Congressman,

I’ve called, emailed, and written – all for one single sake – my kids’ futures. The majority of us don’t want this, and you, in your infinite wisdom, have decided you know better. My kids don’t have a voice in what is being done to this country, and unfortunately for you sir, I’m their elected representative.

I vow not to give you the pleasure of taking my kids’ futures away. I will verbally heckle every public speech that you make. I am buying a bullhorn. And extra batteries. I think it will be fun doing this from a few hundred yards away. I’m looking forward to making myself heard in a different way since I was unsuccessful with the conventional methods.

At campaign stops, I’ll hand out signs that call out your treasonous ways. I’m going to give signs to all the kids to hold up. On the back, I’ll put comic strips and cartoons. Need to make sure they hold them upright and facing the podium. I’m bringing protesting kids – they make for great photo-ops, wouldn’t you agree?

I’ll commit every last dollar I can collect to your opponent. I have 500 charity boxes that I’ll distribute to local businesses with your opponent’s name on it. The small business owners will gladly make room on their counters. When you go into their stores, you’ll be reminded that we are raising money to defeat you one customer at a time. Now that’s customer service!

I will NOT sit by and watch this unfold without being heard.

You’ll ask: “Who was that guy handing out signs to the protesting children? Who uses kids that way? He didn’t shut-up the entire time I was speaking. And that damn bullhorn, is that even legal – it’s so damn loud. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear he farted into the bullhorn on several occasions.”

And they’ll tell you: That was NumberTwo. First generation American, son of a decorated Marine Corps vet, proud father of three, and a God-loving patriot. And yes sir, he did indeed fart into the bullhorn several times.
