Boehner: The American people want no part of ObamaCare bill

John Boehner uses the Republican rebuttal to the weekly presidential address in order to make one final stand against ObamaCare as the Democrats attempt to get it passed without a direct vote over the weekend. Boehner hits all the main themes here: an opaque process, kickbacks and payoffs, soaring deficits, rising premiums, and loss of freedom. He only fails to mention the new role the IRS will have in our lives as an expert panel on health insurance, but then again, Boehner only gets a few minutes. Will this move the needle on health care? Probably not, but at least he’s still on topic. What did our President decide to discuss as his party gets ready to steamroll his top domestic-agenda item through Congress without a vote? Financial reform.

Hello, I’m House Republican Leader John Boehner. I’m speaking to you from the Capitol, where in a matter of hours, the House of Representatives will vote on health care legislation sure to have a drastic effect on our economy and our lives.
It was here fourteen months ago that President Obama took the oath of office with a promise to govern from the center. Republicans stood ready to work with our new president and find common ground to address the issues Americans care about.
Unfortunately, President Obama and Democrats in Washington chose a partisan path and a costly, big-government agenda.
The trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ isn’t working as struggling families continue to ask: ‘where are the jobs?’ And taxpayers’ hard-earned money is being spent so fast that two trillion dollars has been added to the national debt on President Obama’s watch.
Now Democrats want the federal government to take over health care, which represents one-sixth of our economy.
From the beginning, the one thing the American people wanted out of health care reform was lower costs. That’s why Republicans proposed a bill based on common-sense reforms that, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, would reduce premiums for families and small businesses by up to 10 percent. Our bill achieves these goals without cutting Medicare or raising taxes. All of the details are available at healthcare.gop.gov.
The Democrats’ bill, which runs more than 2,300 pages, actually raises premiums and ushers in a massive expansion of government – with roughly 160 new boards, bureaus, and commissions.
Instead of finding a responsible way to pay for all this, Democrats impose more than half-a-trillion dollars in Medicare cuts and more than half-a-trillion dollars in tax hikes.
In fact, this bill requires 10 years of tax increases and 10 years of Medicare cuts just to pay for six years of supposed benefits, many of which don’t even go into effect until 2014. That’s not reform.
It’s clear where the American people stand. They want no part of this bill, and they haven’t been shy about saying so. We’ve seen standing room only crowds at town hall meetings. Rallies in towns and cities around the country. And now, jammed phone lines on Capitol Hill. All of this coming from citizens yelling ‘stop’ at the top of their lungs.
But Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democrat Leaders are too blinded by their ‘Washington knows best’ attitude, too out-of-touch with the concerns of working families, to listen.
Instead of trying to do better, Democrats have packed this bill full of kickbacks, payoffs, and sweetheart deals in order to buy the support of lawmakers and Washington special interest groups.
Democrats are so afraid of the public’s outrage that they have devised a strategy that would allow them to force this massive bill through Congress without even voting on it. It’s outrageous, and it’s an affront to the principles of representative democracy.
We were elected to make tough choices, not run from them. And this vote is certainly one of the toughest.
With that in mind, I asked Speaker Pelosi to have the final health care votes recorded by a ‘call of the roll.’ Under this procedure, each lawmaker will have to stand before the American people and announce his or her vote.
The stakes are too high, and this bill is too controversial, for anything less than complete transparency and accountability. It’s time to stand up and be counted.
Don’t let Democrats in Washington take this debate away from you. Don’t let them make this about arm-twisting and backroom deals.
And don’t let President Obama get away with asking his fellow Democrats to vote for this bill to save his presidency.
Because this vote isn’t about saving a presidency or a politician. It’s about doing the right thing for our kids and grandkids. It’s about ensuring that freedom and opportunity remain the birthright of our people. And it’s about listening to the hard-working taxpayers who sent us here.
That’s why the only responsible course of action is to scrap this health care bill. Let’s start over with a clean sheet of paper. Let’s work together on a step-by-step approach focused on lowering costs for families and small businesses.
Republicans can’t beat this bill, but the American people can. It’s not too late to make your voice heard.

Just as an interesting aside, Boehner taped this in the Capitol Visitor Center; I visited this a few weeks ago while in DC for CPAC. It’s worth remembering that the Visitor Center was another government project that took years longer and far more money than its original projected cost and delivery time. I doubt Boehner had it in mind, but one couldn’t find a more perfect backdrop to use for criticizing the proposal of a huge government program whose real costs can’t possibly be projected.

Pelosi and Obama are performing the biggest bluff in American political history. They do not have the votes, know they don’t have the votes and at this point, are only left with the pressure of the actual floor vote to change 3-5 ‘No’s to ‘yeas

I just watched this imbecile Cuellar on Cavuto. He’s one of the alleged “blue dogs” who is claiming to be undecided.

I think that everyone should take into account that even if this legislation isn’t repealed it can be effectively neutered by eliminating certain provisions. It’s possible to kill the entire thing by removing the one facet that makes it necessary and that’s the mandate. If that’s gone, then the whole thing is for naught because the entire model is predicated on everyone participating.
Now, the entitlement feature is another story, but if it’s single payer that we’re trying to prevent, then we need to focus on the chinks in the armor first. Just trying to stay optimistic here.

Stupak cancelled because Pelosi won’t entertain his amendment anymore. That MIGHT mean that she has the votes and doesn’t need him anymore or it MIGHT mean that she’ll lose more votes from the pro-choice contingent by accepting his amendment. Any reasonable guess right now is accurate.
It DOES mean that this bill will force you to pay for abortions…

Why would Stupek call a presser in the first place? Most likely scenario was to announce some sort of hope for a change in language and commitment from the Senate to make it possible to vote for this bill.
To cancel the presser can only rationally be perceived as a breakdown of that hope.

A friend of mine got a phone call from AFSCME. It was an automated message and said something to the effect that since he’s a fellow union member would he like to be patched through directly to his congressman to urge him to vote yes on the healthcare bill. If so, press 1. So, my friend presses 1. It asks him to state his name and enter his phone number. He did. And, it patches him directly through to Dennis Kucinich’s DC office and a staffer immediately picks up the phone. (My friend had been trying to call the DC office all day and it had been busy). The staffer says: “Would you like to register your support of the bill as a union member?” My friend said, “No, I’d like to register my opposition to the bill as an ex-union member.” And, the staffer hung up on him.
So, how is this for rigging the phones! Everyday individuals can’t get through, but the unions have a direct line through!! Disgusting.

I think he strikes the right tone here for the general public. The problem will be getting any of them to see it.
Like one of the repub leaders (I can’t remember who, maybe Boehner?) said a while back- this is not the Deemocrats against the Republicans, this is the Deemocrats against the American people. The Republicans need to keep pointing this out and thereby become the alternative. Recent polling suggests that is what is happening.
Whether we win or lose this particular battle (healthcare “reform”) the next step is for them to start to lay out a way to reduce the size of government.

I think his favorability will fall beneath only after another six months of a languishing economy. The effect of the healthcare bill will show up longer term except for businesses who decide to lay people off in anticipation of the effect of bill. But because Obama continues to create so much economic uncertainty, we’re not going anywhere for a long time. By end of September with the prospect of a bleak winter coming, Dems will get hammered in November.

They should be having a press conference, tell the house in no uncertain terms that they want no part in this ridiculous federal powergrab.
Call your governor, tell him to make a statement favoring the 10th amendment, and contact those state reps to tell them to vote no.

I know the leadership of the Democrat party, the old dogs, are Leftists from the ’60′s but how have they gotten so many supposed moderates to go along with their scheme? It seems whenever a Dimwit moves to a YES vote on ObamaCare, they hold a presser and explain every nuance. They bring up sob stories about their mother’s best friend’s great-great grandmother Mildred who died in 1925 because she couldn’t afford health insurance. Give them a microphone and they’ll read of Dimwit talking point after Dimwit talking point for twenty minutes.
But, when they move to a NO vote, it’s done very quietly, without a lot of fanfare. Probably because even a two-minute presser would be enough for Pelosi & Rahm to find them and bring the offender into the Congressional shower.

It’s hard to believe one of our representatives has to even give a speech like that. I can’t believe what I was reading. This is the worst of times, the lowest of lows, that I have ever experienced from our government. It’s maddening, it’s heartbreaking, and totally frustrating because no one is listening to our voices. These people should be impeached. Every single one of them who votes for this travesty. Shame on every moron who ever voted these arrogant fools into office. Shame.

Yes, and conveniently, the POS healthcare bill makes “aliens lawfully residing in the U.S.” eligible to receive those nice taxpayer-funded subsidies to purchase HC insurance. Under Graham/Schumer’s immigration “reform” bill, the millions of (mainly poor) illegal aliens currently living in the U.S. would immediately become “aliens lawfully residing in the U.S.” as soon as the bill passes — and thus eligible to receive what will likely be billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies every year — and of course, not one penny of those billions was included in the CBO’s phony scoring of the costs of the HC bill.

I don’t think that I have ever seen something that the majority of Americans do not support forced upon them in such a manner.
Clearly this all has nothing to do with healthcare and everything to do with statism and control. Every Congressperson knows this. That, in part, explains why it is highly likely that not a single member of Congress has read the bill or knows what is really in it. Obama has no clue what is in it. Think about that. It doesn’t matter to them, because the goal is control and self-perpetuation of the Democrat rule.
If this passes, as far as I am concerned, America is gone, and the current state is corrupt and illegitimate. The rule of law becomes meaningless.
