Senate sends letter of reassurance to House on O-Care — but won’t publish names of signatories
posted at 9:23 pm on March 19, 2010 by Allahpundit
Perfect. Why stop with the letter, though? The next logical step in this procedural clusterfark after Slaughter’s gambit is to go ahead and make the voting secret too. Just give us the roll — 217-214 in this case, undoubtedly — and leave it to our esteemed representatives to identify themselves if they like. I wonder if that’d be constitutional.
I’ll bet Pelosi’s wondered too.
The letter has caused some hand-wringing among Democratic senators in recent days, not so much because they don’t support the bill – although skeptical House members would disagree – but senators are notoriously reluctant to publicly commit to something before they absolutely must. Senators like to preserve their leverage.
But a binding commitment is exactly what House Democrats have sought…
Asked whether Reid has been able to round up 51 signatures, [Reid spokesman Jim] Manley was coy.
“We will have done what the house has requested,” Manley said.
Initially they weren’t even going to release the letter, but Dingy, in his infinite wisdom, decided that redacting the names would be good enough. I’m not sure what they’re accomplishing by doing that, though: If one or more of the 50 signatories stabs the House in the back by bailing on reconciliation, the name(s) will surely be leaked. They’re not avoiding any headaches from the public by doing this either. The calls and e-mails to all Democratic senators will skyrocket next week regardless. At this point, you could probably figure out who signed it simply by process of elimination. Subtract 41 Republicans, Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson, maybe Pryor and Landrieu, and you’re already in the ballpark.
Tantalizing exit question: Is the reason they’re not releasing the names because … there aren’t quite 50 yet?
Update: Ah, missed this part from the Roll Call link. Here’s a confidence-builder:
And one Senate Democratic source indicated that Reid had not yet been able to round up the 51 signatures he needed to provide the assurance that the Senate would be able to pass the reconciliation measure. However, the source cautioned that the inability to get 51 votes was not because Reid didn’t have personal commitments from 51 or more Senators, but because many Democratic Senators are squeamish about sticking their necks out before the House has passed the bill.
“You go first!” “No, you go first!” “No, you go…”

well, as a Republican, I don’t care that they don’t have 50 signatures. but as a House Dem, I sure would.
Gawd, can those House Dems be that stupid?

Folks, this is not over. As someone already said, they are trying to create the image of momentum. They are still 5-7 votes short. You are having an impact! Continue to, as the Captain of the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier said to his officers and crew, as they were in just in range of Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11, “Now they will feel the power of the Kennedy; we will strike, and strike hard!” So, continue to “Strike” and “Strike Hard!” We are Americans; and like our great soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen, and United States Marines, our colors do not run! We do not give up the fight! So Strike, and strike again! In battle we are always on the offensive. They are visting war on our Constitution. It is war they shall have. Strike hard!

Espically with the Easter and summer breaks coming up soon. I don’t think the Senators want to face the public after what the House has done to us.

You can bet Jeanne Shaheen’s signed that letter. When the GOP takes back at least one of the Houses in November, they are going to have to spend their first years undoing as much as possible of this Dem mess. If the same pols remain on the Hill, nothing will ever get done as the atmosphere will never be the same. Just to get the country back on an even keel, we’ll have to put new people in. As Rush has said many times, it takes no effort to be a liberal, you just have to FEEL good about your intentions, you don’t actually have to do anything. And he also says that liberals never look back to see the damage that the policies that they implement to FEEL good wreak on the community behind them.
It takes thought, logic and effort to be a conservative.
What I don’t understand is what is this compelling need these progressive, leftist whackos have to control everyone? Dayum, that just takes too much effort, there is a life out there to live for gosh sakes.

There are no moderate democrats. This was a ploy from the start by Rham to get people to pretend to be moderate and to get elected because the American electorate WAS so trusting. I hope Americans learned a lesson. I am going to bed now, to wake up to hopefully better news. I doubt it though.

So the House won’t put their signatures to the Senate Bill but they require the Senate to put their signatures to a pledge to pass the House fix-bill, sight unseen? A fix-bill that I believe includes the Slaughter Rule change amendment that allows the House to keep their hands clean off the Senate Bill.
And I think the reason the
HouseObama wants this so badly is because of that amendment, deem and pass. Without that amendment .. Obama can’t constitutionally sign the Senate Bill and he knows it! He’ll have nothing that documents that the Senate Bill was voted on by the House.Texas Gal on March 19, 2010 at 11:34 PM
No worries, both my Senators will sign on to anything Reid hands them. Colorado has apparently been very generous to the Dems that way.
Oh, and they’re independent thinkers too, so they say in their communications with me. I’m pretty sure they’re independent thinkers because Reid told them to say they were.
You couldn’t find two worse party-line lockstep hacks if you tried. Fortunately Bennett is coming up for his first election here soon (he’ll have to get votes instead of be appointed).
I don’t think he’s got a really good chance this go-round.

Can’t we get just one proceduralist in each Chamber to say NAY on ‘unanimous consent requests’ and things like consent to a voice vote? And to read out each and every bill with each and every amendment?
We need a dose of Immodium-D in Congress to clog up the works and bring it to a grinding halt. Such an individual would be a personal hero, to me, at this time for having the guts to stand up as a representative for his or her State and Constituents against this garbage. Force the full procedure, full recorded vote, full read-out on each and every single item from the start of a day to its end, each and every single day. Do that with health care. Amnesty. The budget. Every puny ‘this is solid dark chocolate day’ thing that goes through Congress needs this so the works can be gummed up. I can survive a government shut down for quite awhile and you have to know DoD has contingency plans for such events. I was in DoD, and we did have such plans… continuation of operations plans, normally made for sneak attacks and natural disasters, but also useful for this… plus the mandatory parts of government have the workers come in without pay: it is part of your agreement to work for us all.
SSN, HHS, Ag, Ed, Energy… those aren’t funded when the government shuts down, no one comes to work.
A proceduralist pushing it to the max would SAVE money by shutting the government down for a period of time by stopping spending. And get folks used to the day government goes bankrupt and must disappear these activities.
Just one per Chamber.
I would vote for the Immodium-D candidate and support such a one, as it is damned simple and the hardest possible task one person can take up: being the Congressional anal retentive.
