Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

For today’s Obamateurism, we turn to an unusual source: The New Republic. The center-Left magazine published an essay yesterday by Yossi Klein Halevi that dresses down Barack Obama for setting back Israeli-Palestinian peace talks 20 years, thanks to his amateurish blundering on the status of construction around Jerusalem. And it’s Halevi and TNR that uses the term “amateurish”:

The return of menace to Jerusalem is not because a mid-level bureaucrat announced stage four of a seven-stage process in the eventual construction of 1,600 apartments in Ramat Shlomo, a Jewish neighborhood in northeast Jerusalem. Such announcements and building projects have become so routine over the years that Palestinians have scarcely responded, let alone violently. In negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, the permanence of Ramat Shlomo, and other Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, has been a given. Ramat Shlomo, located between the Jewish neighborhoods of French Hill and Ramot, will remain within the boundaries of Israeli Jerusalem according to every peace plan. Unlike the small Jewish enclaves inserted into Arab neighborhoods, on which Israelis are strongly divided, building in the established Jewish neighborhoods of East Jerusalem defines the national consensus.

Why, then, the outbreak of violence now? Why Hamas’s “day of rage” over Jerusalem and the Palestinian Authority’s call to gather on the Temple Mount to “save” the Dome of the Rock from non-existent plans to build the Third Temple? Why the sudden outrage over rebuilding a synagogue, destroyed by the Jordanians in 1948, in the Old City’s Jewish Quarter, when dozens of synagogues and yeshivas have been built in the quarter without incident?

The answer lies not in Jerusalem but in Washington. By placing the issue of building in Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem at the center of the peace process, President Obama has inadvertently challenged the Palestinians to do no less.

Astonishingly, Obama is repeating the key tactical mistake of his failed efforts to restart Middle East peace talks over the last year. Though Obama’s insistence on a settlement freeze to help restart negotiations was legitimate, he went a step too far by including building in East Jerusalem. Every Israeli government over the last four decades has built in the Jewish neighborhoods of East Jerusalem; no government, let alone one headed by the Likud, could possibly agree to a freeze there. Obama made resumption of negotiations hostage to a demand that could not be met. The result was that Palestinian leaders were forced to adjust their demands accordingly.

Obama is directly responsible for one of the most absurd turns in the history of Middle East negotiations. Though Palestinian leaders negotiated with Israeli governments that built extensively in the West Bank, they now refused to sit down with the first Israeli government to actually agree to a suspension of building. Obama’s demand for a building freeze in Jerusalem led to a freeze in negotiations.

Finally, after intensive efforts, the administration produced the pathetic achievement of “proximity talks”—setting Palestinian-Israeli negotiations back a generation, to the time when Palestinian leaders refused to sit at the same table with Israelis.

That Obama could be guilty of such amateurishness was perhaps forgivable because he was, after all, an amateur. But he has now taken his failed policy and intensified it. By demanding that Israel stop building in Ramat Shlomo and elsewhere in East Jerusalem—and placing that demand at the center of American-Israeli relations—he’s ensured that the Palestinians won’t show up even to proximity talks. This is no longer amateurishness; it is pique disguised as policy.

Most of the Obamateurisms we feature here are by nature fun and light. This one’s going to cost lives — well, more lives — and there’s nothing fun or lighthearted about that. It’s one of the main reasons Americans should have understood that electing someone with no experience and no demonstrated diplomatic capabilities whatsoever was a huge mistake, literally a matter of life and death. Unfortunately, in this instance, it’s the Israelis and the Palestinians who get to pay the price. (via QandO)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I would argue this is a strategic “mistake.” At the national level, he is developing strategic policy, and the tactics are then worked out on the ground level.

It’s one of the main reasons Americans should have understood that electing someone with no experience and no demonstrated diplomatic capabilities whatsoever was a huge mistake, literally a matter of life and death.

America’s “mistake” can be lain at the feet of the media that refused to report the ideology of ObaMao as repeatedly trumpeted by his “spiritual mentor” Rev. Wright. And the LA Times’s refusal to release the video of ObaMao’s remarks at a dinner, where ObaMao demonstrated his true attitude about the ME. And the ideology of ObaMao’s shadow cabinet of anti-Zionists, who were never vetted nor approved by the Senate.

Maybe the media can take part in “Sunshine Week” and demonstrate some in-depth reporting.

“U.S. Can’t Afford Military Aid to Israel”

By Josh Ruebner

In his recent State of the Union address, President Obama pledged to “go through the budget line by line to eliminate programs that we can’t afford and don’t work.” One week later, he sent his FY2011 budget request to Congress, which included a record-breaking $3 billion in military aid to Israel.

While the pundits have discussed in great length the incredible stupidity of Obama’s approach to Israel, I think there is a much more insidious reason. Obama wants to re-align American policy so that it favors the Muslims of the region over the Jewish state of Israel. It is the only reason that makes sense when you consider just how shabby this administration has treated our strongest ally in the region.

Slightly OT but as depressing as it is to see the demise of a once great nation through the chicanery, partisanship, and corruption…..

For decades pundits have been saying that the New Orleans Saints were so bad at playing football that hell would freeze over before the Saints would ever win The Super Bowl.

On Sunday, February 7, 2010 The Saints won the Super Bowl.

On that same Sunday Washington D.C. was paralyzed under several feet of snow and the Government was shut down.

This, then, firmly establishes the exact geographical position of hell.

But, he probably never heard that at Trinity.

From Front Page Magazine…

Many of Wright’s condemnations of America are echoed in his denunciations of Israel and Zionism, which he has blamed for imposing “injustice and … racism” on the Palestinians. According to Wright, Zionism contains an element of “white racism.” Likening Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to South Africa’s treatment of blacks during the apartheid era, Wright advocates divestment campaigns targeting companies that conduct business in, or with, Israel.

So the Fool did inherit his hatred for Israelis from Wright.

One of Obama’s least endearing narcissistic personality tics is his insistance on doubling-down on every error, as if to say that it was not an error in the first place. So instead of correcting mistakes, he elevates them to policy. If they continue to be controversial, he raises them to the level of doctrine.

We can’t say we weren’t warned. In a debate a year before the election, he said that he would meet with the Iranians without preconditions. Instead of sending a flak out the next day to say, “What the candidate meant to say was…”, then-Senator Obama insisted that he was right, and that he would sit down with Achmadinajad (sp? Who Cares?) as soon as possible after being sworn in. He built this idiocy into an apparent strength, because he, alone in all of Washington, was not “afraid” to talk to our enemies.

We are still paying the price for that one. We can’t have effective negotiations with the Iranians, because they are still waiting to have their face-to-face sit-down without preconditions. We can’t do that… Well, we can’t do that because that would just be stupid.

Now we will see the same thing happen here. Slow Joe thought he saw something while he was there, and got all offended. But he didn’t see what he thought he saw. It was an error. But, instead of letting the professionals take over and smooth the whole thing out, this White House escalated the situation. Now they are going to insist that their error be enshrined as policy. Before this is over, these apartments in Ramat Shlomo will be the keystone of our entire Mid-East policy.

They cannot back away from any error. To do so would be to challenge the doctrine of Presidential Infallability. The fact that this President insists on such a doctrine is an indication of his deeply narcissitic nature.

(BTW… Ditto on the Health Care debacle. After he said “I won” to the Republicans, the die was cast.)

As I was reading EM’s analysis and the New Republic excerpt, and thinking back to Øbummer’s interview with Bret Baier, the thought flashed through my mind “Can Øbummer manipulate his way into the nuclear option and get control of our formidable nuclear arsenal?”
.
I don’t think that it would happen because there are so many controls and fail-safes on the nuclear stockpile but the kind of narcissistic, passive-aggressive, vindictive, manipulative, sociopathic personality Øbummer has, as demonstrated in his irritated responses to Bret Baier among other documented instances, may lead him to be just angry enough to try something foolish.
.
When one is an amateur about something, it is often perceived as lower in quality than a professional would produce, yet I know of many amateurs in many fields who produce work at or above the professional level because they are enthralled with the activity or behavior they pursue. There is a big, Big, BIG difference between being an “amateur,” whose Latin root is amo, to love, and being inept, whose Latin root is aptus, meaning suitable or fitting. At this point, inept, not suitable or fitted for the occupation, defines Øbummer.

Is there a way of making the Fool powerless? So that he does not veto everything we do in 2010? I only suggested impeachment because I thought the Fool is an ideologue, a fool and power hungry to boot. If there is another way of neutering him, I’m all ears.
I certainly don’t like to scream ‘impeachment’ but I see no other way.

Impeachment is the legal way of removing an unfit President from office. It is not stooping when such an action is clearly justified. It is not illegal to be a radical socialist bastard so, to date, I’m not sure what kind of a defense for impeachment could be made. Far better to concentrate on neutering the filthy lying coward during the mid-term elections.

highhopes on March 18, 2010 at 9:29 AM

The guy is clueless. An empty vessel that is only full of leftist tripe that only works in the hot house of accademia but which quickly devolves into various forms of tyrany.

The President has never created a real job, has never applied himself and is where he is in large part because of his race. His main accomplishments have always come at the expense of others. Why should anyone be surprised that this guy is blowing everything up?

Ideologically it is demonstrably a fact that he has more in common with our nation’s critics and enemies than our friends and supporters.

R Square on March 18, 2010 at 9:30 AM

and yet the american-jewish community still supports him.

jbh45 on March 18, 2010 at 8:57 AM

…I know what you are saying, but please remember that there is a portion of the Jewish community which has not chosen to replace our faith and our Torah with post-modern crapulence.

We are not many in number, but our dedication to small government, individual liberty, and individual responsibility is second to none. We did NOT vote for Obama, seeing him easily for what he is: a weak-minded, over-hyped garbage product of a corrupt political culture and an even more corrupt academic community.

His blatant shallow anti-Israel views are the same, tired nonsense we hear from the academic community day in and day out.

Ultimately, with all due respect, Israel could not care less what your boy-king and his Jew-hating minions say or do. Better men than he have been left on the ashheap of history as a result of their evil ways, and I am sure the same will happen to him.

Here is to America’s revival as a nation of pride, freedom, and decency, starting in Fall 2010!

REAL Jews and Israelis are PROUD to support the REAL United States – we look forward to you electing officials with whom we can re-establish a respectful and effective working relationship :)

Am Yisroel Chai!

MogenDavid on March 18, 2010 at 9:32 AM

I don’t think we are throwing Israel under the bus because of any strategic or policy reason. We are throwing them under the bus simply so nobody has to say that Slow Joe made a mistake, and the doctrine of Presidential Infallibility extends, apparently, to the Vice President.

Israel is just unlucky, because the mistake winds up hurting them. But it could have just as easily gone the other way.

Living with this administration is like living in a house with an elephant. Is not so much that the elephant is out to kill you, it’s just that every now and then, the elephant doesn’t look where he is going, and you wind up dead.

He doesn’t have it in for you so much as you just happened to get in the way. Today, Israel got in the way. Next week, it might be the Brits. Who knows.

But, one thing we know for sure… It is only a matter a time before each and every one of us gets in the way…

Haiku Guy on March 18, 2010 at 9:33 AM

Impeachment can be accomplished by a simple majority vote in the House, as was done to Clinton. This is the equivalent of an indictment.

To be ousted from office, though, requires a 2/3 majority in the Senate. Consider this — Clinton received 45 ‘guilty’ votes, which is why he was able to finish out his term. It wasn’t even close. There are 41 Republican Senators at this time.

Howls for impeachment are a waste of time, unless he does something so out there that the full Senate is crying ‘off with his head.’

setting Palestinian-Israeli negotiations back a generation, to the time when Palestinian leaders refused to sit at the same table with Israelis.

But I’m the one we have been waiting for. How can they dare to not obey me. BHO

Clnton knows better. Too bad O is listening to the asshats with zero foreign policy experience instead of her.

elclynn on March 18, 2010 at 10:01 AM

Oh great, Gaza rockets have killed a migrant worker in Israel. I hope the Asshat in Chief is satisfied. He has stirred up a hornet’s nest for sure. Israel is threatening a response to rocket fire. What evil has O started now.

Everyone is paying a price for this amateur. We all pay when he uses water for farms, seniors health care cuts, abortion funding, and on and on, as arm twisting for votes for any of the bills on his agenda. This buying and twisting will not stop until he is stopped. May it be soon, Lord.

Not only does the Democrats need defeating. The Mainstream Media needs to be smackdown as well for covering for these imbeciles.- – -

There in the problem lies, bottom line.

In negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, the permanence of Ramat Shlomo, and other Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, has been a given.

So, this administration can’t tell their east from their west? I’m shocked. Shocked, I say!

Not only are these idiots horrible at math, apparently they suck at geography too.

I just hope that the bombs don’t start falling on Israel until we can elect a new and competent President who will straighten this mess out.

Let the Legal Guys in the Senate do it. States Governors already are threatening his policies with legal moves to block them. States are asserting their sovereignty in a lot of ways and passing laws. So far 37 state legislatures are passing laws against this Federal crap.

GarandFan on March 18, 2010 at 10:53 AM

canopfor,

Agree with you, that and prosecution… America is either a land governed by laws for all, or we are not. When these creatures swear on a Bible to uphold the laws of this land, uphold the Constitution, they must do so or face extreme punishment. Our government has been living above the laws of this land for far too long.

I prefer to save impeachment talk for when it looks like it could be accomplished. I agree that it is a legal way to deal with Scary Barry but right now, it is not even possible. Let’s save the discussion for after November.

Well! He did say he’d stand with his muslim brothers. If that has to set a peace process back, or get Israel a nuke in their yard….so be it.

I don’t for one second think this wasn’t intentional on Obama’s part. He can’t be THAT stupid. Can he?
