Krauthammer: I think it’s going to pass
posted at 9:07 pm on March 18, 2010 by Allahpundit
Skip ahead to 3:05. It’s one thing to know the end is near, it’s another to hear the ‘Hammer, of all people, acknowledge it. What’s next? Dick and Liz Cheney urging conservatives to reconcile themselves to an Iranian bomb?
Michael Barone’s run the numbers and insists that we’re not licked yet, but he sounds at times like he’s trying to convince himself. Nomentum’s turned to momentum and there are no likely eleventh-hour surprises in the chute. The CBO score is out; the media’s got the pompoms ready to wave for “history”; Obama’s canceled his trip so that he can make the “please save my presidency” bambi eyes at Democratic fencesitters in the Oval Office. Granted, the latest polls are as dismal as ever — 38/48 in Pew and 35/55 in Fox News — but our exalted leaders long ago dismissed the concerns of the ignorant teabaggin’ public, so that’s no roadblock. There’ll be a few more no-to-yes flips tomorrow, we’ll start hearing rumbles that they’re now just two or three votes away, and then … the fateful vote.
I’ll give you one small glimmer of hope. From the Star-Tribune:
Just as President Obama thought single-payer holdout Dennis Kucinich had bought in to the Democrats’ health care package, Minnesota’s own Jim Oberstar is now back in doubt.
Oberstar, after reportedly having words with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, appears to have backed off the assurance he gave last weekend, when he said he was “prepared” to vote for health care
He’s still a likely yes. Heart-ache.

I like Krauthammer and more often than not I agree with him, but I hope he is wrong. BTW, he has been saying this for some time, just based on the numerical superiority of the Democrats.
We will find out soon enough I guess.
Terrye on March 18, 2010 at 9:51 PM
I was on this site before the 2006 and 2008 elections and gotten my hopes up, only to see them dashed. Not this time.We need to hope for the best, keep working, but be prepared for the worst. I think we’re likely to lose this battle, but the war isn’t over. Make sure our Senators know we expect them to fight this in the Senate and when hey retake congress we expect this damned thing to be repealed or at least not funded, we need to fight this in the courts and we need to fight it in the voting booth by sending these traitors packing.
Bobbertsan on March 18, 2010 at 9:52 PM
It only goes to Obama if it passes with no changes to the Senate Bill. Any changes and that starts the reconciliation process which then requires the re-pass of both Houses… after the break.
The Republicans have not done everything they could to stop this process. They relented on the reading out of bills and amendments.
If this passes, then the readouts should be done with something much, much, much larger.
The budget.
Cloward-Piven is a two-sided game that both can play. Winds you up with a broke government down to a very few things necessary to protect the Nation.
No money for SSN.
No money for Dept. of Ag. or Ed. or Energy or HHS… just Defense, State, Treasury and a couple of parts of the interior must be funded.
The Republicans have not played hardball.
They had best learn.

Good explanation. I have no problem with actors being political – they are Americans too and have free speech, but it is frustrating when they don’t respect the forum.

I ask Ed, Allah, Boss Emeritus, for a draft of the Obamacare Official Dictionary.
I need to put in my blog everything in such a simplified way nobody gets confused. I put the link to the bill of this afternoon there, amongst other small articles. But I want to move towards informing whoever sees the blog, a nice column/article/dictionary of who’s who and what the heck is going on.
Everybody’s heads are spinning. I have to go to Mr. PPF and give him a shortcut of the shortcut of what I read online, plus FOX, plus Rush, and scheme my opinion, all condensed into one or two sentences so he can keep up.
ProudPalinFan on March 18, 2010 at 9:54 PM
I repeat, the Republicans will walk away empty handed. The Democrats will rightfully be able to claim an historic victory. Despite what you may think, a lot of people actually want this HCR. It may not go as bad for the Dems as you think.
chumpThreads on March 18, 2010 at 9:55 PM
So you have a problem with an uninformed actor telling you what to think if he’s a liberal, but you’re OK with it if he’s a conservative? How nuanced of you.
Proud Rino on March 18, 2010 at 9:55 PM
Don’t worry about that lmUSA, it’ll say something soon to snap you back.

Oh come on, what the hell does that have to do with this? BTW, McCain and Graham voted no on the Senate bill.
Terrye on March 18, 2010 at 9:57 PM
Well, I’m one of those that had little doubt that the Dems would pass Obamacare. What we have been seeing from them is mostly smoke and mirrors cutting backroom deals and trying to minimize the losses they expect to get in November. For goodness sake healthcare measures have already passed both houses so all they have to agree on is which version they give to Obama for his signature.
docdave on March 18, 2010 at 9:58 PM
I’ve always been puzzled by the worship of Krauthammer. He is a progressive, with his last column stating his unequivocal support entitlement programs.
Where is the consistency in the conservative movement?
True_King on March 18, 2010 at 9:58 PM
Why would you possibly care?
I would have thought that after your earlier humiliations, you would have loosened that dunce cap enough to allow some oxygen to your blood-starved little brain. Those synapses are obviously fried by now.
Thank you for playing, pointy-head.
hillbillyjim on March 18, 2010 at 9:58 PM
Yeah it is. Partially anyway. McCain could have won the election if had fought for it. And Bush opened the door for Obama by spending like a drunk sailor himself.
Tasha on March 18, 2010 at 9:58 PM
I don’t. But I’m just irritated by the idea that some actor thinks his opinion counts more than mine. I know you’re a great political expert, Jon Voigt, on account of being in Deliverance and that first Mission Impossible movie with the ridiculous plot, but I can come up with my opinions on my own.
Proud Rino on March 18, 2010 at 9:20 PM
Unless it’s been mentioned before, he was also in the movie THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE!
ProudPalinFan on March 18, 2010 at 9:58 PM
I cannot confirm this, but I have heard that Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly supported ObamaCare in a recent senatorial election? Is this true?
MarkoMancuso on March 18, 2010 at 9:58 PM
I think a lot of the opposition to it was opposition to the whole debate. People apparently liked the provisions fine, but they said they hated the bill, and my suspicion is that they didn’t actually hate the bill, but instead hated the argument about the bill.
If it passes, I think public opinion will change. And I suspect that Republicans won’t really run on repealing health care reform; they’ll run on Democratic corruption, and since Democrats are in charge, they’ll get voted out unless there is a massive economic rebound in the next few months, and Lord knows that’s not going to happen. So, if they run against Democratic corruption *related* to health care, they win big.
That’s the smart play, anyway.
Proud Rino on March 18, 2010 at 9:59 PM
The HRC bill is polling incredibly unpopularly, tactics like Reconciliation and Demon Pass poll even lower, and people will have to pay for this mess well before they ever see any benefits that might arise from it.
But yeah, the Dems will have a wonderful November.

I’m confused (sorry, haven’t read comments yet, just referencing the opening of the thread) why this subject is framed as if today Charles had some kind of light bulb go off and realized something inevitable. Krauthammer has ALWAYS said it would pass. Today was not new. He even pointed today to his past comments on the matter.
Sheesh.
I’m happy to discuss it but when it’s framed so off the mark of what the record is…
OK, off to read what others have said.

KittyLowrey on March 18, 2010 at 10:02 PM
No, genius, people don’t like the bill. The reason individual aspects poll well is because they only poll the softballs like closing the Medicare donut hole, or loaded questions that frame opposite to healthcare reform as tantamount to cheering for the Grim Reaper.
It’s like polling people if they want a bill that pets kittens, then polling them about a bill that pets kittens and then burns their house down.
Good Solid B-Plus on March 18, 2010 at 10:03 PM
Anyone that’s ever fought for friends, family or their country, knows that it’s not a time for hesitation or regret.
Times like these are highs, not low points, and doubt is natural but not terminal.
Sometime in the near future, we’ll emerge from this stronger and with renewed pride, not cowering and fearful.
A righteous fight is uplifting. Read Henry V’s St. Crispen”s Day speech from which “Band of Brothers” is derived. We are there, and you’ll regret being left out of the fight. This is nowhere near being over. FOR SURE.

I don’t, really. I’m just sick of this lame, vague, “it’s us against them, now or never” talk. Say what you mean. If you lack the stones to articulate what you think, then maybe you should reevaluate your opinion.
Unsurprisingly, no one actually had the stones to clarify what they meant.

darwin on March 18, 2010 at 10:06 PM
ReallY? I could just as easily say that if some folks on the right had not sit out the last two elections in a huff Obama would not have won. I think McCain did fight for it myself, but the American people voted for Obama..and not so long ago Glenn Beck was telling us we were better off with him than McCain anyway. So even now, there are libertarians out there who just can not admit that maybe there is a difference between the parties.
As for Bush, when the Republicans lost control of the Congress in 2006, he had been president for 6 years. The budget deficit was $168 billion dollars, for the that year. Last month, the Obama administration posted a deficit of more than $220 billion for February alone. When Bush did veto bills, people like Nancy Pelosi in Congress worked to over ride them..and called him stingy in the process.
No, Bush might not be perfect, but he was downright frugal compared to these people..and one of the reasons we are where we are today is that a lot of people just handed the government to the Democrats on a silver platter, because they were feeling pissed off. Fine, look where that got them.

Of course it’s going pass. The process is 3000% easier when you don’t trouble yourself with pesky (open fingered Ersatz quotes) procedures (closing Ersatz quotes) or (open fingered Ersatz quotes) The Constitution (closing Ersatz quotes).

This is classic Obama-speak. Sounds good, says nothing. What people apparently like what provisions, and how fine do they like it? Fine enough to pay more for less quality care? And what provisions do they feel so fine about?
CarolynM on March 18, 2010 at 10:09 PM
He is not a progressive, but then again you don’t like Rush either do you? I think your problem with CK has more to do with the fact that he is a Jew, some Paulbots are funny that way.
Terrye on March 18, 2010 at 10:09 PM
I wonder if that includes Medicare recipents? Those $520 billion cuts are still in the bill. And I wonder how people will feel when they realize they will have to pay for this thing for 4 years with no beneifts? Or how they will feel about the IRS as some sort of enforcer over their healthcare?

I agree with that. Those who forgot that President Obama is first and foremost a politician were turned off by the wheeling and dealing. Silly. Legislation/sausage, etc.

Whether the bill passes or not, we have to keep fighting the whole idea of government health care, for the simple reason that we already know it won’t work. Britain’s health care system let a 22-year-old man die of thirst in a hospital bed, begging for water.
