Video: The obligatory “Obama and Bret Baier try to be civil” clip

posted at 8:14 pm on March 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

It’s a sign of how tedious this debate has gotten and how rote the talking points now are that the big takeaway from this, by universal acclaim, is how testy it became at times. Which is too bad: Baier did a nice job, especially in squeezing the soundbite o’ the day out of him on the Slaughter nonsense. The clip will, alas, prove too long for those of you who are busy, so here’s the transcript for your skimming pleasure. A taste:

BAIER: Couple more process things, quickly.

You said a few times as Senator Obama that if a president has to eke out a victory of 50 plus one, that on something as important as health care, “you can’t govern.” But now you’re embracing a 50 plus one reconciliation process in the Senate, so do you feel like you can govern after this?

OBAMA: Well, Bret, the — I think what we’ve seen during the course of this year is that we have come up with a bill that basically tracks the recommendations of Tom Daschle, former Democratic senator and leader, but also Bob Dole, former Republican leader, Howard Baker, former Republican leader. The ideas embodied in this legislation are not left, they’re not right, they are — they are —

But here’s the thing, Bret, I mean, the reason that I think this conversation ends up being a little frustrating is because the focus entirely is on Washington process. And yes, I have said that is an ugly process. It was ugly when Republicans were in charge, it was ugly were in Democrats were in charge.

BAIER: This is one-sixth of the U.S. economy, though, sir. One-sixth.

Give Captain Change credit for having the sheer balls, after spending two years on the trail promising to transform the culture in Washington, to fall back on a “Republicans do it too” defense. Via the Standard, David Brooks must be on suicide watch right now:

Deem and pass? Are you kidding me? Is this what the Revolutionary War was fought for? Is this what the boys on Normandy beach were trying to defend? Is this where we thought we would end up when Obama was speaking so beautifully in Iowa or promising to put away childish things?…

Either this whole city has gone insane or I have or both. But I’m out here on the ledge and I’m not coming in the window. In my view this is no longer about health care. It’s just Democrats wanting to pass a bill, any bill, and shredding anything they have to in order to get it done. It’s about taking every sin the Republicans committed when they were busy being corrupted by power and matching it with interest.

My one knock on Baier is that he didn’t press him on what he and Pelosi have been telling liberals about this being merely the first step in the great remaking of American health care and, by extension, America itself. The whole reason he wanted to go on Fox was to sell centrist Democrats and independents on what a modest, even fiscally responsible plan this is; confronting him about the left’s oft-stated ambitions for single-payer would have blown a hole in that. But oh well. I’ll leave you with this question, my very favorite of the ones he asked: “Monday in Ohio, you called for courage in the health care debate. At the same time, House Speaker Pelosi was saying this to reporters about the deem and pass rule: ‘I like it, this scenario, because people don’t have to vote on the Senate bill.’ Is that the kind of courage that you’re talking about?” Heh.

I don’t think Baier was up to the task.I don’t think he really knows what o is up to or capable of.He is dividing this country. There are a few people who could handle o’s rhetoric…Rush and Levin come to mind.

ohiobabe on March 17, 2010 at 9:08 PM

He did a good job. Obama came off as bumbling, and clock-running. Baier deserves a lot more credit here.

MeatHeadinCA on March 17, 2010 at 9:09 PM

Dare I say Glenn Beck’s interview of Eric Massa was more useful. At least I learned something(trivial as that something may be).

Baier’s interview of our Wittle Baby in Chief is repetition ad nauseum. And I find Obama’s attitude infuriating as it is offensive. You are not king, ruler, sovereign, or whatever else you think you are of my country! We may all have some idea of what the Roman’s felt like under Nero.

Methinks Jason Altmire is about to give another bullcrap spiel on Hannity about being undecided and that his constituents are split at 50-50. Jason – YOU LIE! Your district hates this legislation. You might as well begin the registration process for being a health-care lobbyist. Regardless of how Altmire votes, he cashes in. As SanFranNan would say, “poor baby”. Corruptocrats.

myrenovations on March 17, 2010 at 8:46 PM

I can guarantee you Obama’s advisors will never let Baier interview him again. Honest questions, the general public have been asking all year, (that the lamestream media refuses to do), is just too much for a southside Chicago communtiy organizer.

Rovin on March 17, 2010 at 9:14 PM

My favorite part was when Obama tried to say “Of course we know what’s in it and it will be posted for days before the vote.” And Bair says something like… “But just now you couldn’t tell me what fixes were in and what weren’t. Is Montana in? Connecticut?”

Electrongod on March 17, 2010 at 9:17 PM

I thought it was a good interview. He concentrated a bit too much on process questions for my taste but I understand that’s what the people want to talk about. I would have liked to have seen him challenge the tyrant more on his claims that this legislation will lower premiums and improve our health care system when historical case studies and common sense would indicate otherwise.

I’m halfway through watching this and I just can’t believe that this man is touted as a great speaker. He is awful, just awful. His language is not lean, precise and elegant – it’s bulked out with filler and completely devoid of focus. This is a man who cannot think on his feet and waffles in order to buy himself time. So far he has not even come close to answering a single one of Baier’s questions. I think you would have to have your tongue pretty far up Barry’s ass to see this as a good performance. No, Baier isn’t perfect but dammit this is about the best political interview I’ve seen on the mainstream media in years. Just imagine how the same interview would have gone on MSNBC. Gibbs is really going to do a number on Fox now.

What I would have done, towards the end when you see Obama visibly relaxing, thinking the worst is over, was to say, “One final question, sir: Do you support or not support the ‘deem to have passed’ strategy? Totally late to the party.
(long day):

Brett did a whole whoopass better than I thought he would. Hey, let’s understand it is HARD to stand up to the President. You can’t say, “You lie!” (pseudosarc?????).

I said last night that this was a career make-or-break for Baer. So, in hindsight:

I think he can e-mail his resume to every media outlet he wants and he would quickly recieve more than one lucaritive offer over this. Now, I am not saying he gave the world’s best interview, but he did a more than tolarably good job under very difficult circumstances.

It’s pretty danged sad when the interviewer is better prepped than the interviewee. which was, sadly, too obviously the case.

Chewy the Lab on March 17, 2010 at 10:43 PM

I didn’t get to see the interview first hand. I did read the transcript though. I believe Brett did a good job, and had he more time, I’m sure he would have nailed Obama to a wall.

A little off topic now. I did see a clip on O’Reilly, and BOR had Brett on the show to discuss the interview. The clip was Obama getting flippant at Brett, as if Brett was not allowing him to answer a question. However, all these pols know how to do is dance around a question they don’t like. They never really answer it.

Anyway….BOR, and I’m not entirely sure here, but I believe he was chastizing Brett for not being respectful to the president, and letting Brett know his position commands respect? I could be wrong, and am going to rewatch it here in 20 minutes. But I was appalled at that. BOR didn’t get the interview, and I couldn’t help but feel he was venting out that anger, and frustration on Brett. Trying to make Brett look like a second rate journalist. I was just disgusted by that.

I’ve been calling him “Obowma” for I while. Maybe I’ll change it to “Oblahma“.

You people are on a roll tonight! Guess I’d better read all of the comments!

Nope. Just that evil stare like the one he gave Paul Ryan at the summit.

You mean, Count Chocula?

He did a good job. Obama came off as bumbling, and clock-running. Baier deserves a lot more credit here.

MeatHeadinCA on March 17, 2010 at 9:09 PM

I agree….

Obama was looking to do in this interview what he did at the Republican retreat…control by filibuster and create sound bites for the MSM.

Brett broke up his filibustering and the sound bites are not going to be the help that he was hoping for.

Obama came off as very evasive and bumbling in many areas…especially when Baier hit him with his own CBO contradicting his rhetoric.

Baier had to painfully interrupt Obama many times because in these situations,Obama loves to filibuster to avoid having to be pinned down with a specific answer.

….Obama’s dancing around what deals were actually in the bill was a good example of this.

I would have liked to see Baier hit him with “if this bill is for the people like you say…how come you hid the process of crafting it from us and why do you think the vast majority of Americans are against it”…..

…..I would have also liked to have seen Baier hit Obama on how this bill will actually raise premiums (AP,Durbin,ABC News, and the CBO validate this) to counter his constant claims that it won’t.

Brett did a good job and without a doubt left the liberal activist that call themselves journalist looking like the lap dogs they are.

Noticed that too. Looked like he had more eyeshadow on. Weird.

I think he’s smoking to settle his nerves. This WaPo column mentions lips, but I think it affects his eyelids as well.

I’ll bet that none of those doctors mentioned your lips. Allow me: Mr. President, you appear to be wearing purple lipstick. Could it be a brand known as Smoky Residue, that fatally attractive blend of tar, ammonia, arsenic, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and other carcinogenic chemicals that are so thoroughly absorbed into your porous lips that it becomes a virtual second skin?

…Keep smoking, sir, and that caricature of you as the Joker on those tea-party posters won’t be a caricature for long. I’m just saying. That’s what smoking did to my lips, turned them a deep magenta.

I think these questions have been asked before and the responses are, as usual, evasive: (A) You will have to ask the Speaker and the Majority leader about that process and (B) blah blah blah people are misinformed blah blah blah like the “death panels” remark…

WashJeff on March 17, 2010 at 10:51 PM

Chit! Wish I didn’t have back-to-back-to-back days going on…Ooops, Never mind:
Wish I didn’t I am extremely grateful that I have back-to-back-to-back days going on.

It means an income. That’s good, right?/s

Anyway, night all!

Chewy the Lab on March 17, 2010 at 10:51 PM

‘Night, Chewy. Get some good rest. You had better believe there was a conversation at the WH after this interview.

kingsjester on March 17, 2010 at 10:55 PM

Barry never anticipated how determined Bret would be to conduct an authentic television interview.

Despite Bret’s mild-mannered-reporter style, he managed to press Barry in such a way that revealed exactly how slippery, disingenuous, and remarkably unimaginative Barry actually is without a teleprompter. It’s my sincere hope that irrespective of party affiliation, viewers saw Barry tonight for what he really is– an evasive, lying, narcissistic, little brat who could care less that nobody wants nor can afford Barry0care.

anXdem on March 17, 2010 at 8:58 PM

I agree – Bret did a great job. Trying to get straight answers out of Obama is like herding cats. I hope he got huge pats on the back from the rest of the team at Fox News.

Stumblin’, bumblin’, fumblin’ Obama – Bret Baier exposed Mr. Hopeychangey. Empty suit.

Indeed, in this case, the clothes have no emperor!

No federal cheese here. We’ll listen to Jethro Tull, roast some marshmallows, take potshots at passing traffic with the M4, and generally make a mess of ourselves. I’ll bring fondue.

Sounds like a great time! Sadly, I’m in northern VA and it’s too cold at night here for camping, must be worse out there!
