Rasmussen: GOP opens a ten-point lead on generic Congressional ballot
posted at 11:36 am on March 17, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
It wasn’t that long ago that being within 5 points of Democrats on the Congressional ballot was considered a competitive position for Republicans. Now, Rasmussen reports that the GOP has opened a double-digit lead over the majority party for the first time in the pollster’s weekly survey. If anything, the internals are even more discouraging for Democrats than the top line:
Republican candidates have now stretched their lead over Democrats to 10 points in the Generic Congressional Ballot, their biggest lead ever in nearly three years of weekly tracking. The GOP has been leading on the ballot for months.
The new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 45% would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate while 35% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent. Voter support for GOP congressional candidates increased slightly from last week, while support for Democrats fell two points.
Republicans started 2010 ahead by nine points, while support for Democrats fell to its lowest level over the same period. Towards the end of 2009, GOP candidates enjoyed a more modest lead over Democrats, with the gap between the two down to four points in early December. Since the beginning of the year, however, the Republican lead hasn’t dipped below seven points.
It isn’t all good news for the GOP. Rasmussen also surveys the impact of a generic Tea Party candidate on the Congressional ballot, and it gives Democrats a 34/27 edge over Republicans, with 21% going to the Tea Party. That should be a lesson to Republicans on the need to embrace the Tea Party rather than run from it. Note that Democrats barely lose any votes at all in that split.
Otherwise, though, the news is all bad for Democrats. The internals show that Democrats have lost women in this election cycle, with a 43/38 split in favor of the GOP. Every age group except the youngest voters have pluralities or majorities supporting Republicans, and the 18-29YO voters split 44/40 for Democrats, almost within the margin of error. Independents go almost 2-1 for Republicans, 41/22, a remarkably poor showing for the majority party among unaffiliated voters.
How did the Democrats stumble so badly? The same survey shows that 43% of respondents pick economic issues as their most important issue, with another 16% choosing fiscal issues. Instead of responding to that obvious trend, the Democrats have spent almost a year on health-care reform, apparently pandering to the 17% that chose “domestic issues” as their highest priority. Two-thirds of the country believe that the country is on the wrong track, a problem that lands directly on the Democrats’ shoulders as they control all of the elective branches of government. That two-thirds split appears in almost all demographic categories; even amomg Democrats, 44% believe that the nation is headed in the wrong direction, while only 48% think otherwise.
Barack Obama’s approval ratings don’t help. The weekly survey shows a 45/54 upside down approval rating, with only 26% strongly approving of his performance. Majorities of both men (58%) and women (51%) disapprove, as do most age and income demos. Independents actually disapprove at a higher rate than the overall population, at 39/60. Going into the midterm cycle, those numbers look nothing short of catastrophic for Democrats.
Update: Yid with Lid has the historical results charted:

So the public will be getting rid of Democrats en masse this November, yet they’ll be stuck with the abortion of a healthcare bill if it passes this weekend? Wonderful. I don’t think I’ll ever be voting for a Democrat again.

Wonderful.
If there is actually an election this year — after Osama Obama is named President-for-Life — we may get a few more conservative squishes in Congress.
Big whoop.
Exit question: will private polling firms still be allowed to operate in the USSA, or will their function be taken over by a government agency?

Unless the first act of the Republicans upon taking control of the congress is to repeal this socialist health care bill or at least fight as hard as the Democrats did to get it, I don’t want to hear it.
If this socialist coup passes, this is no longer a political discussion about the role of government. The government will have crossed the line and will no longer be acting as a constitutional government. (It isn’t NOW but that’s, hopefully, a temporary problem)

Given the lag between the generic polling and actual voting where it concerns GOP party identification, we may come close to a veto proof majority in the House and close to 60 votes in the Senate. This may be the mother of all voter earthquakes.

From when the coup bill gets passed (if it does) until the election day we will be treated to 24-7 “re-education” seminars about how great things are now with the Republicans out of office… People will no longer have to fear dying… because they will have free health care. The nations economy is strong and will be moreso now that we’ve realigned ourselves with the nations. They’ll swing back the indepedents, the Republicans will get a handful of pickups, maybe even enough to get control of the house but they won’t do anything to repeal Obama’s acts.

Knucklehead on March 17, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Pretty much, yeah. Once this monstrosity is passed, we’ll be set firmly on the road to socialism. No turning back. The bureaucracy that ObamaCare creates will be gargantuan, highly virulent and entrenched. Like in Canada, the “conservative” choice will be the less leftist of the two, the one with the best chance of getting your district the most bennies without being a baldfaced radical.
We’ll get a couple election cycles, maybe. We might even beat Obama in 2012, though I doubt it seriously. The nation is about to lurch violently to the left in the next 15 years, barring a miracle Great Awakening. It’s going to take an entire generation, probably two, of active unified political involvement to walk back from this and dismantle it. With amnesty next on the plate, that won’t happen. The illegals are socialists. They’ll provide the bulk of the political mass that will drag us into wholesale central planning.
This was the left’s shining moment, and they got it done, barring an act of divine mercy.
spmat on March 17, 2010 at 12:01 PM
They’re already on their new strategy for that. They’re inflating the numbers of predicted unemployment so that the actual numbers will look good. (IE they’ll say 15% unemployment but it will come out at 9.8% so, hey, Obama’s policies are working). They already out and out LIED 2 weeks ago about how 360,000 NEW unemployment claims showed that things were getting better.
Skywise on March 17, 2010 at 12:02 PM
It won’t matter if the average Joe doesn’t see his taxes go up – when prices and unemployment go up as a result they will notice that.
The taxes will kick in soon and taking even more money out of a struggling economy will worsen the crisis.
But maybe that’s the whole point of the exercise.

Boy, the Courts are going to be flooded with suits against this. Hannity had a doctor on yesterday who said that many many doctors are going to opt out of Medicare. She said she will give the patients the fee schedule and they will have to pay and get their money back from the govt. They don’t want to deal with the bureacracy that is going to be involved in this fiasco. Also, I read where in Mass. they have to wait in excess of 40 days to be seen by a primary doctor. And sometimes travel far distances to do it. I had a friend in Canada who had a massive heart attack and guess who the doctor was to treat him? An endocrinologist. THis is what we get. Plus high premiums and taxes. There’s going to be trouble, let me tell you.

The Dems are counting on the short memories Americans have.
Taxes will go up, yet the “plan” won’t go into effect for several years. This bill is really a tax bill, imo.
If the Dems don’t get kicked out of office, they will push for amnesty for illegals, and the next thing will be a VAT (federal sales tax). What they will say is that they don’t have enough money to fund the health care entitlements. Where is all that money going, anyway? 4 yrs of paying taxes for something before the benefits are realized? Would anyone in their right mind agree to an arrangement like that in their personal dealings?
There is no doubt in my mind that all that money will be spent elsewhere, and when the time comes to produce the goods Congress will say that there is no money, therefore, another tax is necessary like a VAT .
Cody1991 on March 17, 2010 at 12:06 PM

We’ll need to be organized, disciplined, steadfast, have a plan and be willing to fight for generations. We need to start teaching our children NOW about liberty, individualism and self-sovereignity. We’ll have to take back the government, the schools, the colleges and force this country back on track. One leader and one congressional session won’t suffice. Either the Republican party gets on board or we start a new one. No more McCains, we need real conservative leaders. We need to figure out a philsophical consensus between the religious conservatives and the secular ones so we can work in unity.
None of this is insurmountable but we’re going to have to set aside our lives to make it happen.

That the polls have turned around and we are ascending is positive. The Dems are blowing it faster than expected. My guess is, that if O Care passes the three years of taxes and payments before any ‘benies’ kick in, plus the effect on the economy it will have, will drive the public into forcing the GOP to change/roll back O Care, if the GOP is reluctant to do it on its own.

41 + 22 = 63%. What will the other 37% of Independents do? Stay home, or break for one party or the other on Election Day?
Ditto for the overall totals: 45 + 35 = 80%, meaning 20% undecided. Since there are more Democrat than Republican incumbents, some of their votes might depend on the strength of Republican challengers to Democrat incumbents.
Still, a 10-point generic-ballot lead is HUGE. There are a few dozen inner-city districts where Democrats routinely win with 80%+ of the vote, while Republicans rarely get more than 65% even in “safe” districts. The lopsided margins in those inner-city districts tilt the “generic” vote toward the Democrats without necessarily translating to into House seats, so that Republicans can get a House majority even if they’re about 3-4% down on the generic ballot. If the generic-ballot LEAD holds for the Republicans in November, it could translate to over 250 Republicans in the next House.
Steve Z on March 17, 2010 at 12:27 PM

That is not going to be easy unless SCOTUS steps in.. because if you want to cover people with pre-existing conditions, how are you going to do this without forcing more young people into the pool ? these suckers will be forced to buy insurance just so that people with pre-existing conditions will be covered.
I dont think this is a country which has enough number of people who will stand up and fight courageously for individual liberty – true, there is very strong opposition to Obamacare, but its too little, too late to stop this monster.
The most likely way to repeal this is to have a GOP President and a GOP filibuster proof Congress after 2012 – how likely is that ??

If they do this, the first thing I want the Republican Congress to do when they are seated in January is to use the ‘slaughter rule’ to ‘deem’ that all Democrats have resigned their seats, and have them escorted out of the building by the police.
Then, while the states are working on how to replace them, immediately tackle and reverse this healthcare thing.

I personally think that the machinations of the HCR bill have solidified voters.
The “naysayers” are right in this situation.
It’s not even a matter of wanting bi-partisanship. Those polls don’t really get to the heart of most people’s thinking, in my opinion.
It’s simply too big of a change to pass without either a very clear ethical responsibility, such as ending slavery, or a consensus among the population.
I predict this bill will trigger a huge backlash, not only in voting but also in the American public saying “No!” to paying the mandates.
The IRS will not be able to keep up with all the problems in collections.

This photo looks to me like Barry is dancing on a string like the puppet that he is, while Nanzi and the other guy (who is that, Jimmy Carter?) look on, clapping in amusement.

They fought to r3volt against their own country. Virginia WAS a province of the UK. We\’ve still got some states…They also didn\’t vote to elect a socialist. (Well… MOST of them didn\’t…) Obama told them he wasn\’t a socialist (heck he and Kucinich TODAY said this wasn\’t a socialist plan) and people believed him.

Does Obama still recognize the class system? I thought with dictator-thugs it was the themselves on top and everybody else doing their part to lift the dicator even higher.

Hey, didn’t AP just publish a poll with the partisan gap at +11 for Democrats. I know the generic ballot question and party affiliation are not the exact same thing, but a 21 point discrepancy? You gotta be kidding me. It’s malpractice for AP to be publishing that nonsense.

The ‘doom and gloomers’ in your foxhole will be the realist/pragmatic ones that have been preparing for the fight. The non-D&G’ers will be the naively optimistic and unprepared ones surprised and asking where they can find ammunition.

Hmmm, good idea – seeing that I lost all my guns AND ammo in a freak hailstorm last winter.

“Deem” is the word of the year. I just “deemed” all my work done. My boss just “undeemed” it.
The GOP needs to get this “deeming” fad into some ads real quick.
ConservativeTony on March 17, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Their won’t be any heavy-handed tactics on the mandate.
Why would Democrats give a damn about that? The only reason it’s in the Bill is to give it a semblance of fiscal responsiblity, they have no intention of enforcing it.
Anyone who cries will just be given a huge government subsidy to purchase health insurance, or they can just buy it when they get sick with a government subsidy.
It will mean skyrocketing premiums for the responsible among us who do carry health insurance, but that was Barry’s intentions all along.

Excellent point! A “third party” that siphons off votes from the extremes of one party helps the opposition–ALWAYS!
Ross Perot helped Bill Clinton get elected twice. Liberal John Anderson helped elect Ronald Reagan in 1980 (he might have won anyway), and Ralph Nader helped elect George W. Bush in 2000.
No question that Tea Partiers are right in principle, but any principle needs a majority in order to GOVERN. The place for Tea Partiers to challenge RINOs is in Republican PRIMARIES only, a la Rubio vs. Crist or Hayworth vs. McCain.
But if the Tea Party candidate loses the primary, Tea Party voters need to hold their noses if necessary and vote Republican in November–a Republican in Congress who votes your ideas 60% of the time as part of a MAJORITY is better than a Democrat who votes your ideas 0% of the time.
As Sarah Palin told the Tea Partiers–pick a party–which is closer to their ideas?

Have you ever seen this level of anger in the populace?

If they’ve lost AnninCA…

The Tea Party has its place this coming election, but it isn’t where most people think. It has been and will be effective in going against the GOP leadership if/when they attempt to shove Liberal Republicans down our throats.

HI MRSCRIBBLER–11:42. If and when OSAMA OBAMA IS DECLARED PRESIDENT FOR LIFE–it will be American Civil War II. It will look like the Alamo–followed by the San Jacinto victory. Any “president for life” in the U.S.A. will have a very short “term in office”–and a long time in prison.
